Idol Sales News – Week Ending 10/19/14

Florida Georgia Line tops the album charts this week with an estimated 200K in sales. This is their first number one album and it is the third Country album to top the chart in as many weeks.

Also on the Country chart are The Swon Brothers from The Voice. The came in third on the fourth season of the show and were on Blake’s team. They are estimated to have sold around 10K for 27th on the chart (official numbers from RoughStock 10K). That’s about par for a Voice contestant and actually better than some of the winners. Here are some numbers for other Voice artists:

Watch Cooper, Osnes & Munoz Sin...
Watch Cooper, Osnes & Munoz Sing Irving Berlin!

Season 1:
Winner: Javiar Colon (Adam): 9,974
Second: Dia Frampton (Blake): 10K

Season 2:
Winner: Jermaine Paul (Blake) – no album released

Season 3:
Winner: Cassadee Pope (Blake) – 43K

Season 4:
Winner: Danielle Bradbery (Blake) – 41K

Season 5:
Winner: Tessanne Chin (Adam) – 7K

Season 6:
Winner: Josh Kaufman (Usher) – no album released

Blake has the four most successful album sellers from The Voice on his teams. Winningest judge ever!

Not on Country, but she used to be, is Taylor Swift who will top the Hot 100 this week (but I predicted that last week – it was close, but she should convincingly beat Meghan this week).

  3. Does anyone have any thoughts on why the Swon Brothers and now Scotty MCCreery’s single sales are underperforming their chart positions? A Top 20 country song should easily be in the overall Top 100.

  4. I had the same question about P2s Unpack Your Heart. It is top 20 on AAA and top 30 on HAC a and hasn’t broken top 1500. Seems strange to me. I actually like it better than Raging Fire.

  5. Isn’t airplay based on record company involvement? I figured the labels pushed the songs hard at radio and the ardent fans kept requesting. Usually if a song is played enough sales pick up….well, sometimes.

  6. A Top 20 country song should easily be in the overall Top 100.

But “Something Bad,” which just went recurrent from Top 10, is at #100. So are we sure that a lower-charting song that’s the second single from an album should be selling more singles than that?

The top 100 on iTunes at the moment is very heavily Pop and urban/Pop crossover artists, those being formats that move singles more than country. (I’m counting Taylor Swift as Pop because she herself says the current album is a Pop album.)

  7. Since, I’m a country fan than most posters here I will try to answer your question as best I can. Out of the current Top 20, 7 songs are at #100 or higher on iTunes currently. Most of the songs that are doing better than #100 are A-listers or artists who are marketed currently very well (Ex. Cole Swindell, Sam Hunt, etc.). The 7 artists in the Top 20 that aren’t in the Top 100 are mostly artists that in the country world IMO aren’t marketed well as others. IMO The Swon Brothers, Scotty, Big & Rich, Parmalee, etc. that are in the Top 20 aren’t as marketed even in the country world as the other artists in the Top 20.

  8. Somethin Bad isn’t a great example for your point – sales were heavily frontloaded and it has sold over 800k to date, 1 of the bigger singles promoted to country this year.

I think it’s fair to say both ‘Later On’ & ‘Feelin’ It’ are underperforming relative to their position on the country chart based on how they’ve ranked on the Itunes Country chart. LO never cracked the Itunes country t30 once it hit radio (it did hit #1 after their Voice performance last December, several months before the song was sent to radio).

FI is currently ranked #34 on the Itunes country chart despite being #15 Billboard/#18 Mediabase. Let’s take out singles just released to Itunes: there’s Billy Currington’s Don’t It, Don’t Go City On Me by Kane Brown (random – just looked him up, not much of a song), Honky Tonk Road by Wade Bowen, and Trouble by Gloriana. There are also 2 Sam Hunt album tracks in front of FI (this is why I keep saying Sam Hunt’s sales may be something to watch when his album comes out next week). So FI is ranked 28th on the country single sales list at the moment. Out of the 27 songs ahead of FI, 12 are lead singles but 6 of those 12 lead singles (well, 7 counting Little Big Town’s Day Drinking) are from albums that are already out. I think it’s still fair to say FI is underperforming in the sales department – its total sales over 29 weeks total is around 200k (sales through week 28 were ~179k with 19k sold last week per Roughstock).

  9. I think it speaks to the cost of catering to radio trends with a style of song that doesn’t necessarily showcase what you do best individually. The Swon Brothers’s signature Voice performance was on Danny’s Song, an acoustic ballad where they sang harmonies. Later On is a non-offensive friendly bro song about hitting on a girl, not terrible by any means, but it doesn’t really capture what they do best.

Scotty’s Feelin It is basically a summer party song. Its target market may be radio, but FI doesn’t exactly land where the preferences of Scotty’s core fanbase do.

  10. P2 seems to be in the old Idol rut of each single not doing as well as the previous one. UYH did get bumped into the iTunes top 1500 a couple of times (once when he performed it on Today), but never stayed long. As for radio, AAA and HAC aren’t huge ponds. Success there won’t necessarily translate into noticeable sales. Total UYH spins in both formats combined would barely get it into the top 40 in CHR or country.

  11. – Scotty McCreery at #31. “Feelin’ It” sold 9k and has scanned nearly 188k to date.

    Place Artist Track Sales Total

  12. YOUR NEW RELEASES: Just in time for Halloween, horror-rockers Slipknot will be at the front of the line for chart treats next week. The great Neil Diamond, meanwhile, is set for a strong bow with an appreciably gentler, though no less autumnal, new album. That said, Christmas is already in the air—and there’s something for every stocking in the latest assortment of Q4 releases. A cappella fivesome Pentatonix are truly bringing the frankincense and myrrh, as their Yuletide full-length gets off to a holly, jolly start. Here are this week’s key debuts:

    Slipknot (Roadrunner) 100-110k
    Neil Diamond (Capitol) 70-80k
    Logic (Def Jam) 65-70k
    T.I. (Grand Hustle/Columbia) 65-70k
Little Big Town (Capitol Nashville) 30-35k
    Pentatonix (RCA) 28-32k
    Annie Lennox (Blue Note) 24-27k
    Aretha Franklin (RCA) 21-24k
    Susan Boyle (SYCO/Columbia) 16-18k
    Ben Howard (Island) 12-14k

Speaking of Halloween, if you’re visited by a trick-or-treater who bears a striking resemblance to a slovenly music-trade editor of a certain age, it’s just a kid in an adorable costume. Fill up that bag, stat. (10/22a)

  13. No. It’s a cover album of classic songs with themes of hope & inspiration.

  14. I’m a little surprised FGL sales aren’t higher given their saturation in the country world these days. But 200k certainly nothing to complain about.

I did not like RaeLynn on the Voice at all, and never much of a Blake fan. Have to give it to them on RaeLynn’s debut single, it’s a cute song and she is doing surprisingly well.
