Idol Sales News – Week Ending 10/13/13 (Miley Cyrus, Cassadee Pope)

Miley Cyrus is easily the best selling album of the week moving more than three times the units as the second place album from Panic! At the Disco. Lorde will likely have the best selling single of the week since she was dominating iTunes. She was challenged briefly by Bieber at the beginning of this week and now Eminem is stomping all over the chart like a wrathful “Rap God”, so she might not hold onto the top spot when sales are reported next week.

Cassadee Pope, winner of the third season of The Voice, debuted in the top 10. ETA: Cassadee sold 43k according to Soundscan and will take the Top spot on the Billboard Country Albums Chart. She sold almost as much in her first week as the two previous winners did with their entire post-Voice album runs (of course, that it is a bit of a cheat since Jermaine didn’t release an album, so Javier’s sales of 46K as of June 2013 are all we are comparing with). She sold at the top end of what HDD had earlier predicted (prediction: 40-45K, estimate: 44,856) which is often a sign that the sales weren’t front-loaded and the second week drop will be within expected (if not lower) range. When you see the predictions drop between the One-day and “Weakend” reports and then the sales estimates are lower again, that’s generally a bad sign of front-loaded sales with no legs and a big second week drop. So, the signs are good and The Voice finally has somebody they can crow about. I’m sure they will make much of her topping the Country Album chart. It’s very hard for women to break into the Country genre these days, so good on her.

The other big blog related news is Glee’s “The Quarterback”. The episode aired on Thursday night and the EP just exploded onto the charts taking over the number one slot on iTunes. With really only three days of digital sales, the album sold 47K to end up the week at 7th.

Today, we should get one day sales predictions for Scotty McCreery’s new album. The sophomore album is always the one that seems to trip Idols up. Can they sustain and build their fan base or will they get dropped? The only Idol to increase sales from Album 1 to 2 was Kelly Clarkson. She had a massive hit with “Breakaway” from the “Princess Diaries” which helped to get her second album off on the right foot. That’s not to say all the other second albums are flops. Carrie’s “Carnival Ride”‘s 3.3M in sales would be the envy of almost any other artist and it would be hard for anybody to match the 7.3M in sales “Some Hearts” had. Scotty’s debut single hasn’t exactly been tearing up the radio airplay charts, so it would not be expected that his first week’s sales will be anywhere near the 197K in sales his first album had. Hopefully, he will put up big enough numbers so that his label will continue to invest in promoting him.

This is the weekly sales thread. Please post numbers as you find them. Thanks!
