Idol Sales News – Week Ending 08/24/14

Wiz Khalifa is estimated to top the Album charts this week with Guardians of the Galaxy coming in a distant second. Taylor Swift should have the best selling single, but will she have enough juice to top the Hot 100? Or will Nicki’s youtube numbers influence her chart position enough to put her at number 1? Or will Meaghan Trainor’s combined success in sales, airplay and youtube get her her first number one on the Hot 100 (she was second last week)?

For our reality competition stars…Season 3 Voice winner Cassadee Pope has a track on the “Nashville Outlaws Tribute to Motley Crue” which debuts at number 5. Cher Lloyd from the UK X-Factor is featured on a track on the Now 51 album at 4th. Nashville Star’s Miranda Lambert’s latest album is at 19th. Idol’s Season 11’s seventh place finisher Colton Dixon debuts at 20th with his second album (and will probably top the Christian Album chart). Now 50 is 25th and features X-Factor’s One Direction.

This is the weekly sales thread. Please post numbers as you find them. Thanks!

PS Sorry for missing the last few days of posting the thread. Unexpected internet issues. Thanks MJ for coming to the rescue!

  4. Kris Allen is on the Independent Albums list for billboard as # 10.

  5. Identical to last week’s ranking? Or has BB not updated yet? I thought updates were usually much later on Wednesday than now.

  6. Well we knew that Rising Star’s ratings stunk. And now here’s evidence that it didn’t help Brad Paisley’s sales. HDD is estimating the first week sales for his new album at 50-60K. His last album, which came out in April 2013, had first week sales of 100K

    http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/rumormill.cgi

  7. oh by the way: Taylor Swift’s estimated 1st week sales for her new single?

    544,000

  8. some depressing stats from that Billboard article…

“Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Aug. 24) totaled 3.97 million units, down 3 percent compared with the sum last week (4.11 million) and down 19 percent compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (4.9 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 154.5 million, down 15 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (181 million).
This week’s 3.97 million total is the smallest weekly sum for album sales since SoundScan began tracking data in 1991. It’s also the first time weekly sales have fallen below 4 million in that time span.”

  9. YOUR NEW RELEASES: Ariana Grande will notch her second #1 debut next week, and there will be go-go dancing throughout the land. The diminutive diva will also be a guest host onAmerican Top 40 this weekend (8/30-31). Here are this week’s key debuts:

    Ariana Grande (Republic) 150-170k
    Brad Paisley (Arista Nashville) 50-60k
    KEM (Motown) 35-40k
    Avenged Sevenfold (Hopeless) 20-25k
    G-Unit (G-Unit) 10-12k
    Royal Blood (Warner Bros.) 9-11k

Avenged Sevenfold’s release, it should be noted, is the deluxe re-issue of their second studio album, Waking the Fallen. In other rock news, we’re keeping an eye on Brit duo Royal Blood, which is seriously buzzing among fans of alt-rock riffage. (8/27a)

  11. I’m not surprised at these #’s for Brad. Rising Star did probably not help. Also, his last album was in his words “an experimental album.” While it produced hits, I think it turned off some of his core fanbase. His new album is more of the music he’s known for, but I don’t know if most people know that & have moved away from him & his music already.

  14. How come Scotty’s numbers are always reported at Roughstock? Why him & not others? Is he a favorite of the writer?

  15. The writer Matt Bjorke is a fan of Scotty’s. But there were multiple weeks he didn’t report the numbers. Some of Scotty’s fans asked him on Twitter. There were times he gave them the #’s through Twitter. I think a factor in reporting it was so he wasn’t kept asking.

If you ask Matt through Twitter, there are times he gives you #’s for your artist.

  16. Thanks for answering my question – just wondered what made Scotty an artist of interest on his blog.

  17. Your welcome. I’ve seen him answer fans about Kellie Pickler, Cassadee, & other artist’s sales. So it doesn’t hurt to ask, he could give you the #’s you’re seeking.

  18. 1d is one the best selling live acts of alltime. It’s fucking unbeliavible

  19. I think it turned off some of his core fanbase

    Certainly aggravated me lol

  20. Matt B. has been very supportive of all the AI alums, I think, as well as other up&coming (hopeful) acts.

  21. On a normal decay curve, his album wouldn’t be in the top 50, and he’s not a country artist reported by Roughstock, so the best we may do is estimates when the BB 200 comes out tomorrow. It’s not like there are expectations of anything but a massive second-week drop, since the broadest promo in the past week has been woeful articles over the state of Idol.

A 70% drop would take it to 3,600. Steeper would not be a total shocker, as this is a situation with zero radio and any buzz is relentlessly negative.

  22. That’s very nice that he answers fan queries. do you think he has access to #s for non-country artists too? :)

  23. From what I’ve seen, he’s only answered sales related questions about country artists since he posts for Roughstock. I’m not sure if he has access to non-country artists.

  24. Colton Dixon’s Anchor sold 9,688 last week according to a post at UKMIX quoting from a source that’s usually reliable.

  25. That’s respectable. I hope it’s within the label’s parameters, as Dixon’s pretty much done everything right to build a genre-specific fan base that transcends Idol. While I’m not crazy about him or his music, I like to see people rewarded for checking all the boxes as diligently as he’s done.

  26. Considering Colton’s likely going to be #1 on the Christian/Gospel albums chart, I don’t see how the label could be anything but happy.

  27. Well, you can tour down to playing bars the size of my living room (literally — the Lost Leaf is in a restored bungalow — free niche bands with your niche beer!). But I’m having trouble imagining a full-band tour of the usual theater-sized venues being on the table, and I doubt major bands are beating down the doors to have Johnson open for him.

Also, when the label’s at the “let’s laugh nervously and change the subject” stage and 19 has to do something more than follow the script in the blue binder, it’s hard to get anything organized. We’ve seen that before, many times, even on a higher sales base than this.

Getting Johnson a Rock of Ages type gig or a frontman position for a legacy band would probably be more constructive, even though there are several songs on his album that I’d like to hear live.

I joked about Interscope dropping him the minute the tour was over… and it’s not so much wanting to see him dropped as wanting to see the label skip the DIthering & Obstructing stage and let him get on with using what little momentum he has.

  28. Caleb could surely do what Kris is doing though no? Play college shows and clubs- being the current American Idol still has SOME marketplace value I would think. If it allows past AI winners to have a tour why not Caleb. If he doesn’t tour how is anyone going to hear his music?

  29. Well Haley didn’t win but you are right about Candice. The thing is why didn’t she do some kind of tour? I don’t understand that either.
Maybe it has to do with the genre?

  30. I’ve joked about Johnson playing the Rhythm Room (cap: 250), but he’d go over great with its regulars, and the size is about right,. (Okay, maybe the Crescent Ballroom, 400-ish.)

The economics of small tours are really tight, especially when I doubt he commands a large appearance fee to make up for it at college gigs or festivals. College students abandoned Idol years ago, and it’s not like his music is current or hip. KA has the advantage of past reputation and success (as does Cook), but Johnson has no glorious past.

He could choose to do a small tour (opening for somebody bigger would be better), but that’s why he needs the label to not be in the Dithering & Obstructing stage. Label suits who know they’re losing money but still want dirty fingers in every pie prevent decisions from being made.

If he doesn’t tour how is anyone going to hear his music?

The demonstrated lack of interest in hearing his music, from his own fans, is a big part of the problem here. If your own fans don’t give two figs, it’s hard to convince anybody that non-fans should give it a shot. I’m not joking when I point out that I care more about his damned album than most of the people who thought it was so important that he win.
