Idol Sales News – Week Ending 05/23/10

This is the calm before the storm.

There are three exciting times of the year for Idol number fans. November, when the new crop of Idol albums drop. Just after Christmas when all those iTune giftcards get redeemed. And this week. The week that Idols fill the Idol stage. The week that Idol press goes into overdrive. The week that iTunes can finally start reporting on S9 download sales. The week of the coronation singles. But, we won’t get those numbers until next week. This week’s numbers are the calm before the storm. The week before the rising tide will float all boats.

And, because everybody is busy covering last week, we have no numbers yet. Sigh. Please post them when you find them.

But, I have an interesting article for you: Market Shares

iTunes accounted for 26.7% of all music sales last year (up from 21.4% in 2008 and 12.7% in 2007). Meanwhile, second place Walmart was down to 12.5% of the market in 2009 (15% in 2008). Amazon sales are way up.

“Overall, digital accounts in the top 20 overall accounted for a combined 35.5% of all sales, up from 31.6% in 2008.”
