This week, the Top 24 semifinalists will be split into two groups – 12 females and 12 males – and each contestant will perform a song from the Top 10 Hits of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The 12 female singers will perform tonight, Tuesday, Feb. 23 (8:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed), and the 12 male singers will perform tomorrow, Wednesday, Feb. 24 (8:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed), on FOX.

Starting tonight, fans can pre-order IDOL performances from their favorite contestants exclusively on a special AMERICAN IDOL area of the iTunes Store. Pre-orders will download automatically the day after the performance show airs. Fans can also purchase their favorite music performances starting tomorrow for $1.29 each. Starting March 18, videos of Top 12 finalist performances will also be available for purchase for $1.49 each.

And new for Season Nine, AMERICAN IDOL will reveal show themes not only on-air, but also online with iTunes beginning with the Top 12. iTunes Store customers will be able to purchase and download songs and playlists for IDOL show themes in advance, giving fans the opportunity to preview and download the same music the contestants will be listening to as they make their all-important song choices.

  1. Gotta give AI PTB credit. They sure know how to make money.

And the person who decided that the performance goes up .20 AFTER an AI contestant has mangled performed the song should get a bonus. Brilliant.

  2. Smart, very smart! Make the money off these kids where they can because god knows record sales suck these days.

  3. Tell me about it. What ridiculous pricing, for people who may not even make it someday. Pretty extraordinary that you’d buy a song for $1.49 when it’s produced like crap, too. Though I will admit, I wished I had bought my David Cook favorites before they removed them..

Ah, so THIS is how they’re getting so much current music cleared for use this season. Awesome. As cool as it can be sometimes to see a contestant do reconstructive surgery on a song to make it sound like something that could be played on the radio today, it’s nice that they’re finally going to just give them a list of contemporary songs to begin with.

  5. Though I will admit, I wished I had bought my David Cook favorites before they removed them..

    Me too.

  6. Exactly how is this different than last year, aside from the pre-announcement on iTunes?

  7. Though I will admit, I wished I had bought my David Cook favorites before they removed them..

Heh, I have a bunch of studio versions on my iPod, lots of David’s plus a bunch from last year. I’m just really picky about the ones I buy, don’t want to never listen to something I shelled out $1.49 for :)

  8. “Starting March 18, videos of Top 12 finalist performances will also be available for purchase for $1.49 each.”

that’s actually not as expensive as iTunes videos usually are.. they’re usually $1.99. Not that it matters to me, I never download videos from iTunes :p

I think the songs will just be the normal $1.29 price, if I am reading it correctly.

  9. Exactly how is this different than last year, aside from the pre-announcement on iTunes?

It sounds to me like they’re going to have a separate section highlighting the songs contestants were allowed to choose from, which would give these songs more exposure on ITunes (and give artists the boost even if the song wasn’t chosen)???

  10. Sorry – for some reason I have not been able to properly quote ever since the transition. Hopefully I figure it out soon!

J9BT, just highlight and copy the section you want to quote, then paste it into the new comment window. Highlight the section a second time and then click on the b-quote box. Then start a new paragraph to make your comments. (This is how I’ve always done it on mj’s.)

  12. Thanks J9BT. They almost made it sound like there was some wonderous new thing they were rolling out, but last year was the first time I bought AI performances off iTunes..so I knew they had a prior set up.

  13. How does the office pool work I have never tried it b4
This will be my first year but I have been on this site forever but I just signed up
This is my favorite american idol site even over the real idol site *=)

  14. if you could get the classic performances
i would be all about grabbing AI8 ones: kris, adam, allison
for some odd reason the 8 ones are harding to find on youtube
the actually performances, not just the audio.
Hell put season 8 on dvd, i would buy it.
