American Idol 9 Preview: It’s Girls Night – VIDEO

UPDATE! Make sure to be here at 6-7 pm ET–I’ve got a spy attending Dress Rehearsal!

American Idol 9 FINALLY goes live as the Top 12 girls take the stage tonight! Check out some song spoilers here. Who are you rooting for? Do you have a favorite yet?

My favorite girls so far are: Crystal Bowersox, Didi Benami and  Lilly Scott. I’m looking forward to hearing more from Siobhan Magnus and Lacey Brown.

After tonight’s live show, I’ll have a better idea of  which of these ladies has the right stuff to make the Top 12. No predictions yet from me–I’ve got to see them handle the Idol stage first.

Simon Cowell told reporters he’s hoping to find a Taylor Swift amongst these hopefuls. Heh. Well, we’ve got plenty of girls with guitars here. And bonus? They can sing!

After the jump, a couple of Top 24 previews. One from FOX5, and the other from Access Hollywood’s Laura Saltman.

I agree with Laura…nobody has really distinguished themselves yet this year. I’m hoping the semi-finals will bring out the stars!

MJ – ITA. I’m throwing Katie Stevens in there too as a possibility, but I’m with you on your favorites, and definitely will hold final judgement until they take the stage and perform. I’m really looking forward to tonight!

  2. Yeah I love CBS (Crystal Bowersox) Didi and Katie Stevens! I love others as well. Lily Scott I’m holding off on. She was at the very end of the episode in her audition and she was good but was way to quick. I decided to wait to hear more. :) I can’t wait for tonight!

  3. I hope everyone brings their ‘A’ game tonight, it’s the big time now!

Can they pick any song tonight?

  4. Simon Cowell told reporters he’s hoping to find a Taylor Swift amongst these hopefuls. Heh. Well, we’ve got plenty of girls with guitars here. And bonus? They can sing!

Unlike Taylor Swift. OOhh! Did I say that out loud?

  5. Really excited for tonight, this is when the competition really begins IMO.

There is plenty of space for any of these girls to take the frontrunner spot.

  6. Crystal Bowersox.
There is a no-nonsense toughness about her that is right for these times. She has the musical chops as well, and I expect she’ll make great song choices/arrangements. But I think she might connect with the public better than any other girl.

  7. Didi Benami is my favorite girl and I also really like Ashley, Katie, and Janell. Hoping for the best for Katelyn and Michelle also!

  8. In years past, when Idol had the 12/12 format, did the men go first or did the women?

And does anyone remember which night in the semis gets higher ratings?

I’m curious to see what Idol will do to get themselves a female winner.

  9. American Idol 9 FINALLY goes live as the Top 12 girls take the stage tonight! Check out some spoilers here.

Spoilers? What spoilers? I don’t see no stinkin’ spoilers! What possible spoilers could there be at this point anyway? Song selections I guess, but those aren’t listed here. Have those leaked yet?

  10. Crystal Bowersox, Didi Benami and Lilly Scott. I’m looking forward to hearing more from Siobhan Magnus and Lacey Brown.

I like the same girls too. I’ll stay open-minded about Katie Stevens though. Well, there you go, my ideal list to make top 12? Of course that’ll never happen since the audience never votes through too many similar girls. Looking forward to tonight! Ohh… I gotta select my picks for the pool.

  11. I’m excited for tonight! I am rooting for Crystal, Haeley, Didi, Ashley and Michelle!

  12. Crystal Bowersox! Mamasox! I hope she does well tonight. She’s been consistent so far in the little we’ve seen. Hopefully she’ll connect with America. :D

Then Lilly Scott and Lacey Brown are the next ones I’m watching for. I’m curious about Siobhan and for some reason a little unsure about Didi.

I actually hope everyone does well tonight and can’t believe how much I’m looking forward to this!

  13. When are the pool picks due? I should take notes tonight, a few of the girls I can’t seem to keep straight just yet.

  14. I’ve very excited to see Crystal and Didi. Bring on the girls we’re ready.

  15. When are the pool picks due?

By the start time of the live results show broadcast.

  16. Are the pool picks due after the girls and guys sing and before the results show? Correct me if I am wrong. lol.

  17. I’m kinda surprised how excited I am – but looking forward to tonight! My whole family has been sick, we’re *finally* all better, ready to hang out and pick our favorites. Go Mamasox!

  18. Yay! We’re finally here! I am excited about hearing them all at this point especially Michelle and Paige since I don’t really have a clue about them. My favorites shifted some after Hollywood – pure voice enjoyment-wise it’s Crystal, Siobhan and Katie for me with maybe some Lily thrown in there. But I’m open to whatever they got – sing to me!!!

  19. Michael Slezak has released his latest “Power List” of semi-finalists, and all I can say is he really doesn’t care for Katelyn Epperly, Haeley Vaughn, Alex Lambert, and Tim Urban, since they’re left off the list, while unknown quantities Joe Muñoz, Michelle Delamor, and Paige Miles are included (“Let’s be honest, no impression is better than a bad one”).

  20. Yay for spies at dress rehearsal! I think this is my favorite part of the show, the speculation and anticipation, haha.

After reading through Slezak’s list, I still don’t quite get his love for Janell’s House of the Rising Sun, but oh well…kinda shocked to see Crystal Bowersox getting more love in the poll than Andrew Garcia. I think Crystal and Tyler are my favorites right now, followed by Lacey and John Park.

  21. My favorite girls so far are: Crystal Bowersox, Didi Benami and Lilly Scott.

Absolutely agree. Mamasox has earned an early favorite status from me so far, but Didi and Lilly have had some truly nice performances too.

Can’t wait to hear what Lilly chose for tonight. She promised some obscure picks, let’s see how possible that is with this theme.

I also will be watching out for Janell.

    Finally…yay for spoilers!

  22. Does anyone know if there are any live blogging or video feeds for tonight’s show for those of us who don’t have TV? :)

  23. The girls I like so far are Didi, Janell, Crystal, Lilly, & Lacey. I know a lot of people like Siobhan, but IMO, she really oversang on that clip they showed of “Living For The City.” I’m willing to keep an open mind tonight, but if her song choice spoiler is right… Hmm. We’ll see.

Katie has a very good, very mature voice, but she’s almost too old fashioned for me. I’m very meh about both Katelyn & Ashley, don’t know enough about Michelle & Paige, and think Haeley should not have made top 24. She needs more vocal training. We already have one country/pop singer in the music industry who can’t sing live. We don’t need another one.

  24. I actually don’t like crystal.her voice is good but her personality isn’t my thing at all( and no,I’m not just saying that because she’s not glittery :))

    but I FLOVE didi!!!!

And more or less like everyone else

  25. LACEY BROWN LACEY BROWN LACEY BROWN

Haha–also excited to see Didi, Ashley, and Katelyn, and I’m curious about Paige, Siobhan, and Melissa.

Not feeling the Crystal love just yet. Hope tonight is awesome.

  26. I’m with you on the choices mj of what I heard so far.
There are girls i haven’t heard yet though. Looking forward to hear them all tonight and will take notes for the pool :D

Got to admit though that Crystal is already a stand out for me. she’s wonderful

  27. I’m telling you folks, Didi Benami is as fragile as Brooke White. They really have the same “vibe” around them.

Brooke White did a great and sublime studio recording of Andrew Lloyd webber’s YOU MUST LOVE ME, but crapped out during the live performance of this song because of her nerves and had to do a second take. I was told that she was perfect during the practice session and Webber was impressed.

I just hope that Didi’s nerves does not get to her when the pressure is on.

  28. I can’t believe how excited I am about tonight’s show. I really loathed last season’s top 36 format. Let the games begin!

Little Boy Blue, there’s a difference between getting terrible stagefright and being overly emotional. I’m hoping Didi is more like David Cook (who would keep it together and hold off bursting into tears until his performances were over ;-) ) and Brooke, who was unable to perform her best as the pressure of the season got the best of her.

  29. I actually don’t like crystal.her voice is good but her personality isn’t my thing at all( and no,I’m not just saying that because she’s not glittery :) )

LOL, that is too funny ;)

I am wondering if Didi will fall apart, too – she does remind me a lot of Brooke.

  30. I like Didi, Crystal and Lilly best so far. I think Lacey’s audition of SOTR was overrought and pretentious but I liked her Wonderful World so I’m not sure if if I’m going to love her of find her annoying.

I think Siobahn has a nice big voice but so far can’t get beyond the faces she makes when she sings (shallow, I know).

Ashley, Katie and Janel are pleasant but generic. Katelyn is pretty but definitely outclassed as a singer by the others.

The others are mystery women so I’m curious to hear them.

  31. I am LOVING Didi so far, but I really hope she doesn’t break down like Brooke did. I also really like Lilly; she’s got sort of a Jason Castro vibe. I’m excited to see Siobhan, she seems like she can really wail. (in a good way) Not feeling the hype about Crystal. She’s good.. but she’s just not appealing to me.

  32. Ugh, Simon…you want a female Taylor Swift? You are aware girl can’t sing aren’t you?

Oh wait! We have one of those! God, I hope that doesn’t mean he wants Haeley(or however she spells her name)country chick who sings equally as painful?

That must be the only reason she’s been put through! She’s the next Taylor Swift!

Yay for spoilers! I’m sooo hoping Siobhan isn’t really singing “It’s Raining Men” because what a terrible song!

I’m definitely excited for Lily, Didi(until she gets annoying, fear it may happen), Crystal and Lacey. I’ve liked them since the beginning. The others I hope surprise me….like Siobhan.

  33. When Simon says he wants to find a Taylor Swift type, I don’t believe for one minute he’s talking about her genre or style. I think he just wants a marketable package that will make him lots and lots of money.

  34. Janell Wheeler is my favorite based off her “American Boy” performance during Hollywood week. I hope she gets her voice and confidence back enough to pull her future performances back up to that level. I think she’s a total package artist and I hope she does well.

  35. MJ, Ryan Tweeted this 5 minutes ago….

“Less thank 2 hours until we are live on idol..only on contestant #6 in rehearsal…its going to be tight!”

    UGGG

  36. I wonder if they will do the old only two judges critique trick to save time.

  37. “Less thank 2 hours until we are live on idol..only on contestant #6 in rehearsal…its going to be tight!”

    Hahaha, here we go again!

  38. So they are singing now and have to sing again in an hour or so. Wait, we dont have Paula to watch the rehearsal to get her comments ready, the judges can do it live I think. lOL

  39. I don’t know how they’re going to cram 24 minutes of actual singing into a 120 minute show. It’s a miracle that they usually manage to pull that off.

  40. I don’t know how they’re going to cram 24 minutes of actual singing into a 120 minute show. It’s a miracle that they usually manage to pull that off.

    LOL!

You know what this reminds me of? There was an article somewhere that did a study that proved that in football there’s actually only 11 minutes where the ball’s in play in 3 hours of coverage. At least AI’s better than that!

  41. Waaah, my kids want the computer so I’m gonna miss the spoilers. (Pity party for self). Ooh, my iPhone! I can check my iPhone!

And I guess if there are no spoilers I can just watch the darn show, eh? :)

  42. Top 5 women:

    Crystal Bowersox
    Didi Benami
    Ashley Rodriguez
    Katie Stevens
    Lilly Scott

You heard it here, folks :P.

Biggest dark horses in this formula are Siobhan Magnus and Lacey Brown, but I certainly wouldn’t mind either of them “upsetting” the formula. Paige Miles and Michelle Delamor, we haven’t seen enough of, but I do like Michelle. Janell Wheeler is outclassed by the other guitar girls.

The only two I don’t like too much are Haeley and Katelyn. Haeley can’t sing (IMO, it’s a SIN if she goes on without delivering tonight, although I do like her personality) and Katelyn bores me.

  43. from above: “When Simon says he wants to find a Taylor Swift type, I don’t believe for one minute he’s talking about her genre or style. I think he just wants a marketable package that will make him lots and lots of money.”

THIS!! I don’t think he’s talking of country or a girl with blonde curls, he means a winner that will debut at #1, have countless hits across genres and radio formats, and make bu-koo bucks.
Maybe the musicianship and power of a Brandi Carlile or Ingrid Michaelson but the fanbase, branding of Taylor Swift…. we will see.

  44. Don’t know of any spoilers, but can we cross our fingers that Gavin DeGraw’s “I Don’t Want to Be” is RIP, that song is so overdone by contestants. They should stay away from that song among others. (Lee Dwyze, I’m looking at you!)

  45. MJ, I think maybe your spy either got lost or defected to the other side.

  46. Speaking of fave girls and how they could fare tonight, I was looking thru Slezak’s photo album of top 24 & here’s what he said was a weak spot for each girl (after each’s age):
–Katie Stevens, 17 Achilles’ Heel?: The show’s relentless mentions of her Alzheimer’s-afflicted grandmother have threatened to overshadow Katie’s vocal talents.
–Crystal Bowersox, 24 Achilles’ Heel?: Certain segments of Idol fans are notoriously tough on rocker chicks, women with tattoos, and single mothers.
–Michelle Delamor, 22 Achilles’ Heel?: Aside from a four-second solo singing ”Irreplaceable” (with Ashley Rodriguez and Charity Vance) during group rounds, she’s been season 9’s invisible woman.
–Ashley Rodriguez, 22 Achilles’ Heel?: Has the voice and the look, but hasn’t yet shown the inventiveness it takes to win the competition in a post-David Cook era.
–Janell Wheeler, 24 Achilles’ Heel?: Final Hell Week performance of Taylor Swift’s ”Love Story” was kind of a mess, with Janell admitting she couldn’t handle the pressure. Will she crack when she has to perform live for 25 million people?
–Lacey Brown, 24 Achilles’ Heel?: Her subtle style — that Hollywood Week rendition of ”What a Wonderful World” occasionally dissipated to a whisper — might work against her when she’s backed by Idol’s ”Bandzilla.”
–Didi Benami, 23 Achilles’ Heel?: Near-constant crying and relentless references to deceased friend could quickly go from affecting to annoying.
–Siobhan Magnus, 20 Achilles’ Heel?: Siobhan’s frocks have veered from granny garish (a heavy white-lace top Ellen described as too old) to gimmicky ’80s kitsch (newsflash! only Dancing With the Stars’ Edyta Sliwinska is allowed to wear legwarmers in prime time!).
–Paige Miles, 24 Achilles’ Heel?: Other than a brief flash of her doing backup vocals on Neapolitan’s a capella ”Bad Romance” (in which she didn’t even get identified!) Paige has been largely absent from the season 9 proceedings. Do the producers realize she is auditioning for Idol, not Without a Trace?
–Haeley Vaughn, 16 Achilles’ Heel?: It was almost impossible not to be appalled by her botched lyrics to ”Sweet Escape” and botched notes on ”I’m Yours” during Hell Week. Needs to pull it together — pronto! — or this adorable kid will be the first one swept overboard this season.
–Lilly Scott, 20 Achilles’ Heel?: Pushed her vocals too hard on Hall and Oates’s ”Rich Girl” for her final Hell Week performance; needs to remember that the show has evolved past its former ”bigger is always better” ways.
–Katelyn Epperly, 19 Achilles’ Heel?: Simon and Ellen both criticized Katelyn’s Hollywood Week performances; is it possible she’s being pegged for the Kristy Lee Cook/Haley Scarnato ”pretty girl punching-bag” slot?

  47. Ok, spy, if you were just waiting for me to get back online… Here I am! Lol!

  48. MJ, I think maybe your spy either got lost or defected to the other side.

Ha! Ryan tweeted that the dress rehearsal was running super late…

  49. Oh well, there’s always tomorrow…and the next (what will feel like) 145 weeks. :P

  50. Ho, shes sewn into her outfit and been waiting to pee for 5 hours, Ryan did you really need to make her say that!!!!!!

  51. Siobhan Magnus, Lilly Scott, and Crystal Bowersox were stand-outs tonight. Each is unique and not a cookie cutter version that I have seen recently. In fact, I think these three will be in the TOP 12.

I felt so sorry for Paige Miles because if she had gotten the exposure that Haeley has, she would have an established fan base. To make matters worse, they send this young lady out first. Not fair…not fair at all.

OMG, Randy can speak! Seriously, he made some sound comments tonight. I think all four judges gave valuable advice to the girls, although Ellen’s wasn’t on the technical aspects. I believe she was a bit nervous tonight. Kara was some kind of awesome – and funny!

  52. My favorite girls so far are: Crystal Bowersox, Didi Benami and Lilly Scott.

Mine too, mj. None of the rest interested me. I like Lilly the most, then Crystal(what a gorgeous voice). Didi a little less, but I still liked her a lot.

I also thought the judges were very good tonight. They were concise, they didn’t waste time, but they managed to say a lot. The four of them seem like a pretty good group. I don’t get Randy, but I never get Randy.

  53. I must say I was underwhelmed with the girls tonight…they all seemed uptight. To be expected for the first live show though. After tomorrow, we can talk about whether they really are better than the guys!

  54. I think Paige, Haeley, Ashley, and Lacey may be in danger going home. I want to hear more from Paige. I think Michelle may last another week. How do I pick the two who are going home?

Is there really a Diva in this bunch?
