Harry Connick, Jr. is a man who knows – Country music is probably one of the last frontiers for lyrics. Broadway’s probably the other one. But there’s not a lot of lyrics really being written, so for people trying to tell stories with words, they appreciate the idea of understanding the lyrics. … Somehow, (my) message of singing runs and vocal embellishments got miscommunicated, because a lot of people say, ‘Man, we agree with you. People shouldn’t sing runs.’ Man, I wasn’t saying that at all. Some of my favorite singers, going back to Louis Armstrong, all they did was screw with melodies and change them. But the difference is, they knew the melody and then opted to change it. So all I was saying was “Learn the song, and sing the lyrics. Think about what you’re singing.” And those young women that I mentored, they’re kids. They need to know. I mean, when I was that age, I had to be told that, too. Think about it before you sing it. It seems very fundamental, but it’s actually a lot harder than it looks. I can see how that (would resonate) with the Nashville folks, and I’m glad. Think about this — I’m on this huge television show, having a real dialogue about music. How cool is that? – Read more at The Tennessean

Prince Charming: Glee star Chris Colfer turns teen author – Hearing a bunch of 40-year-olds talking about what’s appealing to teenagers is always funny,’ says Glee star Chris Colfer. ‘When I was a teenager, a studio executive told me that if I wanted to make a movie, it was going to have to be about how the character lost his virginity, how he wants to become popular, otherwise nobody’s gonna want to see it. I was like, “Absolutely not.” Not every teenager in the world is on a quest to become popular. I certainly wasn’t; when I was in high school, I wanted people to leave me alone.’ – Read more at Standard.co.uk
