Toy giveaway honors Julia Hudson’s nephew

December 24, 2009 (CHICAGO) (WLS) — The nephew of Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson was remembered at a toy giveaway today.

Kids got to pick their own presents during the giveaway at Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church on South Greenwood.

This is the second year for the event done in memory of 7-year-old Julian King.

Santa also dropped by, along with Julian King’s mother. During the event, the children were reminded of the importance of doing their best in school.

Making the right decision is important for a singer’s career, but if you’re an American Idol winner, like Kris Allen, it’s especially important to choose the perfect song.

Throughout the Idol experience, Allen’s performances were limited to the songs made available to him by the show, so defining his own style became a major necessity for him.

Luckily, the season eight champ found Live Like We’re Dying, which personifies who Allen is musically.

Cheers to a tuneful new year

Dec. 31 is the one night everyone watches TV for a party. Since Guy Lombardo ushered in 1930 on radio, we have come to expect a soundtrack for that party. As we leave 2009 behind, three of the major networks, ABC, Fox and NBC, have live concerts on Thursday, and all plan to cut to the ball dropping in Times Square at midnight.

People’s choice

1. “What you don’t see” took you behind the cameras during a taping of “American Idol, ” revealing how the judges (mis)behave during breaks and performances, how Paula and Kara ignore each other and the great disconnect between how the “Idols” sound in real life and what you hear at home.

2. “Pain pill Paula”quoted the now-former “Idol” judge talking candidly about how difficult it was for her to detox from a 12-year addiction to painkillers.

3. Shocked by Adam Lambert’s risqu American Music Awards performance, you wanted to know more. “Adam raises Cain” told how no one in charge saw the scandalous dance moves coming.

Happy Birthday, Chris Daughtry!

Season 5 star Chris Daughtry celebrates his 30th birthday the day after Christmas. He may have ended up in fourth place, but he has had a very successful career since his time on American Idol. He formed a band, Daughtry, and they released a self-titled debut album in 2006. The album went on to become the fastest selling debut rock album in Soundscan history. Success on the charts soon followed, with the album peaking at #1 on the Billboard 200 and Billboard Top Rock Albums. Last week, Billboard released their Decade End and Year End charts, and Daughtry’s name appears all over them. After an AMA win and four Grammy nominations, it was safe to say that fourth place on American Idol wasn’t so bad after all.

Happy Birthday, Ryan Seacrest!

Ryan won’t be able to relax too much after his birthday. He executive-produces and co-hosts ‘Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest.’
