Taylor Hicks brings holiday cheer to Birmingham with benefit at Ore (video)

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Taylor Hicks is nesting in Nashville. And yes, Soul Patrol diehards, he has a new couch.

If you remember correctly, the Hoover native said a big, fancy sofa would be his first substantial purchase if he won the “American Idol” crown in 2006.

When Hicks became a TV sensation on the Fox reality show, The Birmingham News actually paid a visit to his Southside apartment — and raised a ruckus by looking (and photographing) under the cushions.

Backbeat: L.A. Reid Talks Backstage at ‘X Factor’ About Chris Rene, New Regime at Epic

BBB: It seems that would be more true for some than others at this point, with five contestants left.
LA: Tonight (Dec. 7) was an important night for Chris Rene. He certainly stood up as a recording artist by doing his own material. He entered the contest doing his own material and that by doing his own material once again, he proved himself to be an original and in a lane all of his own. Yes, he looked like a star. Melanie stood up and was really strong and for her it’s a matter of material. Marcus Canty is one soulful dude and I feel him. There are all truly contenders and I don’t think the winner is obvious. We don’t have a clue who the winner will be.

Rachel, it was a surprise to me that she was in he bottom two and now that she’s being sent home. But no, I had to leave it up to America.”

Of her decision to leave the elimination up to the public, Scherzinger says, “At this point in the game, I don’t want to send anyone home. Marcus had been in the bottom twice already. I wasn’t going to make the decision. I just couldn’t make the decision, so I left it up to America to vote.”

Simon Cowell ‘set to appear in this weekend’s UK X Factor final’

The secret source said: “Simon has stayed abreast of the show from America and has continued to have daily conference calls with his staff in the UK.

“But he didn’t want to appear in the early weeks because he needed to concentrate on his day job. There was also no point in him overshadowing Gary Barlow and the other judges.”

Simon hasn’t confirmed any of this lark, but the arena is all set up for it and he will reportedly appear on screen and chat to the contestants via Skype after their performances.

‘Glee’ Ratings Plunge: Why Audiences Are Tuning Out

“Glee” has lost nearly a quarter of its audience this season — more than any other show with such high ratings. Is it burning out, like so many series shows that become near-instant cultural phenomena? Or just finding its real audience after years of hype?

In its current, third season, the cultural phenomenon has tried to return to its roots after second-season gimmicks tested even some die-hard Gleeks. It’s unclear whether cutting down on special guests and thematic episodes has reduced viewership this season, if some fans have given up, or if something else is at play.
