Lee DeWyze Tells New ‘Idol’ Judges Not to Be Copycats

“The judges are gonna do a good job as long as they’re their own personalities and don’t try to copy past seasons, ” he tells Popeater. DeWyze will be watching, as he doesn’t plan on turning his back on the show that made him a star. “I really had a good time on the show and I’m not the type to ever sit there and be like, ‘I’m done with ‘American Idol, ” he says. “It’s like it was a step in my life I’m very happy I did and I’m grateful and blessed to be in the situation I’m in.”

GOP Senator Scott Brown throws swanky party featuring his Daughter Ayla Brown and Ace Young

And, if you go to the party, you don’t have to worry about having a good time ruined by the baleful eyes of the unemployed.

“$100 to attend, ” an online flyer for the party notes.

Even those whose benefits will not run out until after the holidays would not likely pay a C-note for an event headlined by “American Idol” stars and national recording artist Ayla Brown and international recording artist Ace Young.

Young’s claim to fame was that he finished seventh in the fifth season of “American Idol.” Ayla Brown only made it to the top 16 women, but she is the senator’s daughter. I wonder if he ever read her “A Christmas Carol” when she was a little one.

Holy Matrimony Shocker! Insiders Spill What’s Next for Glee’s Big Love Triangle

According to multiple sources, John will be shooting at least four more episodes of Glee this season. That could turn into an even longer stay, depending on how fans respond to the upcoming love-triangle story.

The good news for you die-hard fans of Will and Emma? I stand by what I told you in this week’s Spoiler Chat, that there is “Wemma” goodness on the way. Although Carl and Emma will continue to grow closer for a while, her uncertain look over his shoulder last night was not for nothin’. I’m told the current end game is still Will and Emma—it just might take a while to get there. So don’t give up hope just yet.

  1. Congrats to Carrie, Adam and Fantasia on their grammy noms – all well deserved.

  2. Derek Hough for choreographer on X factor US? I guess it’s a package deal with his (rumoured) girlfriend Cheryl Cole.
I don’t think he choreographs numbers other than ballroom but he is a big name so it would be a big hit to DWTS and a big (but expensive) get for Simon.

  3. Congrats to Fantasia, Carrie and Adam for their Grammy nominations. Sounds like Jordin is working hard on her next album. Hopefully for her, it will be better than the last.

  4. SIMON Cowell is splashing out £1million to ensure he gets the Christmas No1 – by recording five different winners’ songs for X Factor contestants.

Hmmm, this could backfire by splitting the “wallet vote” with too many choices. I wonder if someone will run an anti-Simon campaign again this year?

But do they plan to release all 5 songs? I don’t get this.

  6. I think it’s one song for each contestant? So each gets a different song?

  7. SIMON Cowell is splashing out £1million to ensure he gets the Christmas No1 – by recording five different winners’ songs for X Factor contestants.

Simon will not be out any money. He will recoup it from the contestants.

  8. thanks, mj, for the confirmation of lee’s Disney Christmas Day Parade gig. gives the fans lots more to look forward to. also, really happy for adam, carrie, fantasia. didn’t really like adam much on the show but i love some of his songs from the album & even saw him in concert recently. there’s no denying that awesome voice. these 3 are all talented & deserving. goodluck to them!

  9. Love all the flailing on Twitter about Adam’s nomination. His own flail is a top tweet for the day. So far Sarver and Anoop gave him congrats from the Idols, but his band and all his friends and fans tweeting is a joy to read. So excited for him.

I loved the simple tweet from his dad and also from Monte, Tommy and Taylor. I am sure all of the Idols from Season 8 are so proud of him and happy for his success.

I know he’s really happy for Adam. Is Neil with Adam in Paris or did he come home with the rest of the band?

    I’m not.
But some tweets would change my mind- so far we have Anoop, Alexis, and Michael.

LMAO. We’re really counting tweets now?

I mean, they all have his phone number. They could call him, or text him, or even send him a private tweet… what can be gained from keeping a list of who sends him a public twitter message? Yikes.

  18. More promo for Crystal.

  19. Congratulations again to Carrie, Fantasia and Adam on their nominations — very excited for all 3 of them. Hope at least one of them will be asked to perform at the show!

I hope people don’t start tweeting nasty stuff to the S8 Idols if they don’t publicly acknowledge Adam’s nomination. That’s pointless, especially since no one knows whether any or all of them have already contacted him privately.

  20. I’m not.
But some tweets would change my mind- so far we have Anoop, Alexis, and Michael.

Why do people who actually know Adam have to tweet to prove they are excited? Maybe some prefer to pick up the phone and call him. The “Twitter as litmus test for friendships” thing is silly. FANS only have Twitter as an option. Many of his fellow AIers can just call or text him personally.

Nice! Gina is doing her job. Chelsea Lately is a nice get.

The only thing missing is a morning show appearance right now. I expect that will pop up soon!

  22. Tinawina
Crystal will be on Regis — so she has a morning show appearance. Or did you mean one of the big 3 (Today Show, GMA, CBS This Morning)?

  23. girlygirl I meant one of the big 3, only because Idols usually pop up on one of those too. I’m happy with what she has though. :)

Next week will officially be the week before release so we should start seeing reviews/interviews/writeups come out then too. So cool, I can’t wait to see how it all plays out.

ETA: I forgot about a Vh1 appearance. So I’m sure a video debut/interview is in the works too.

  24. Looking forward to seeing Crystal on all these shows. She needs to really bring it though. Got my fingers crossed for her.

  25. The “Twitter as litmus test for friendships” thing is silly. FANS only have Twitter as an option. Many of his fellow AIers can just call or text him personally.

IKR? I hate when people get riled up over whether someone tweeted about something. If I knew Adam I would just pick up the phone and congratulate him in person. I guess it is a way to help put the news out there but I don’t get the judging that goes on when we have no idea(and it is not our business) whether someone has contacted Adam by some other means.

  26. ginaorr Also @crystalbowersox will be on @theellenshow airing Thursday, December 16, @chelsealately on Wednesday, December 22

Oh good! I hope that Crystal gets an interview with Ellen. A lot of Idols appear on one of the three network morning magazine shows the day of their CD release, so I’m hoping that Crystal will appear somewhere on Dec. 14.

  27. I’m not.
But some tweets would change my mind- so far we have Anoop, Alexis, and Michael.

We are 100% NOT PLAYING THIS GAME TODAY.

I swear, I will close this thread if we start the whole “Your Idol sucks/isjustjellus because he didn’t tweet congratulations to my Idol” deal.

    Take your fanwarring elsewhere.

  28. Crystal just was interviewed on KFOG in San Francisco, and after the interview they played “Ridin’ With the Radio”, which seems to be more evidence that the album will be promoted without any one specific single.

PS: They played RWTR uncensored, so I guess the shit-bomb flies, the fuck-bomb does not.

  29. after the interview they played “Ridin’ With the Radio”, which seems to be more evidence that the album will be promoted without any one specific single

    .
That’s interesting. I would agree, except that a video for FD appears to have been shot. On the other hand, perhaps, the video is more to promote the entire album (since the CD is also titled “FD”).

  30. On the other hand, perhaps, the video is more to promote the entire album (since the CD is also titled “FD”).

That’s exactly how I see it.

  31. Also, Jive doesn’t arrange tv appearances, her management does that usually.

    Yep.

Gina was a high powered publicist for years so I am expecting to see good media placements for Crystal. She knows how to get someone in a position to create buzz.

I don’t think we are going to get a handle on where Jive is in all of this until the radio-related promo starts picking up. Maybe they will start in earnest around the album drop, or maybe not until after January. We’ll see!

  32. Crystal just was interviewed on KFOG in San Francisco, and after the interview they played “Ridin’ With the Radio”, which seems to be more evidence that the album will be promoted without any one specific single.

If true, it will be interesting to see how that theory plays out.

Alternative Theory: KFOG said “Farmer’s Daughter doesn’t fit our format. We are willing to interview Crystal, but is there something else we can play?”

Conventional Wisdom: If a station is willing to interview you, at least they have some interest. If they don’t play your single afterwards, they are probably never going to play it. If they do play your single, they are either interested in your single or they are just being polite. If they play your single and decide to play a second song of yours too? You are golden. If they don’t play your single, but they play something else? They are probably telling your label to pick a different single.

But, hey, conventional wisdom is defied every day.

David Hasselhoff heads to the UK to replace Simon Cowell on Britain’s Got Talent

Simon Cowell is not exactly my favourite dude, but David Hasselhoff can in no way shape or form be considered a replacement for Simon. The Hoff is a train excelerating towards a brick wall while a tsunami approaches and the engineer has just eaten some bad fish.

  33. The Hoff is a train excelerating towards a brick wall while a tsunami approaches and the engineer has just eaten some bad fish.

Heh. While I completely endorse this description, it also occurs to me that Simon had veto power, if not outright selection options on his temp. Picking Hasselhoff is a reflection of exactly how he regards that show, and what it aspires to be – Maximum Cheese. Unless that title is already held by XFactor…IMO. Of course.

  34. michaelsarver1 @yourbodybible I knew Adam had something special the first time I saw him sing. I thought to myself, “why my season dude”. LOL. Great talent

not playing the game MJ but I just thought Michael’s tweet was frikken funny

I don’t care who does or doesn’t use twitter haha

  35. Congrats to Carrie, Fantasia and Adam on their noms.

Good to see Florence nominated as best new artist, but has she got a hope in hell against Bieber?!

  36. Latest tweet from Gina Orr regarding Crystal promo…

@gwensokata_VI40 Jive IS working radio, but radio shuts down in 2 weeks. The big push will be Jan Feb for a 2011 impact. It’s all good :)

  37. MJ— your comment is why I love it here! :-)

I have a question. Jive is tweeting messages about Adam whi Paris. Does anyone know why? Are they handling him there? I’m so confused. I can’t keep straight what record label does what anymore.

  38. This is totally off topic, but does anyone know what has happened to The Masterclass Lady? She has not blogged since America’s Got Talent. Last I heard she was bitten by a dog. I hope she is OK. I always really enjoyed her critiques, and I look at singers in a different way since I followed her. I listen to those vowels and watch the shape of the mouth, etc. I hope she is back for Idol this year.

  39. I’m glad that jive will be working radio. I love Farmers Daughter, but wasn’t sure how much traction it would get before Xmas. Seems perfect for a post-holiday push.

  40. The Hoff is a train excelerating towards a brick wall while a tsunami approaches and the engineer has just eaten some bad fish.

So then, the phrase you may be searching for is “ratings gold”??? … I mean, if they could get him to do all this on live tv — Why, they might even have a replacement for Simon “pSy -Cho” Scowell’s legendary meanness, which was their old ratings gold. … heh

    Lorismile
From what I understand RCA doesn’t have an office/branch in France. And since RCA and Jive are somehow part of a larger company (ask Q3 I don’t understand it lol) I think they are using Jive’s French branch to handle the promo stuff.

  42. I just thought Michael’s tweet was frikken funny

I don’t care who does or doesn’t use twitter haha

Discussion of congratulatory tweets is fine, it’s the tally-keeping that I’m banning. :).

  43. Congratulations to Carrie, Adam & Fantasia. It’s great news for Idol and for all their fans.

LOL the poor UK, getting The Hoff. Although, he’s much more popular in Europe than here, or at least he used to be. I hadn’t heard the part in the piece about him being let go due to rumored drinking issues, I assumed he was tired of it and wanted to move on.

Yay for #TeamWemma!! I’m happy to read that, although they will probably torture me with the storyline in the meantime.

  44. This is totally off topic, but does anyone know what has happened to The Masterclass Lady? She has not blogged since America’s Got Talent

joelhss, I understood she had a heart attack – she wrote about it on the AGT thread in June. There’s a September blog up right now where she left a message she was taking some time off for health and family. That’s all I know.

  45. Latest tweet from Gina Orr regarding Crystal promo…

@gwensokata_VI40 Jive IS working radio, but radio shuts down in 2 weeks. The big push will be Jan Feb for a 2011 impact. It’s all good :)

YEEESSSS!!!!! LOL I was thinking that might be the case.

As much as I like Crystal I haven’t found myself getting too excited to follow anyone this year, it was more like a detached interest. Maybe it is Grammy hangover but I am starting to get excited for Crystal’s project to really get moving! This is going to be fun. :D

  46. the chris sligh cover is great! his voice is so flexible. the song itself is so schmaltzy (like a commercial jingle rather than a pop tune), but that’s not his fault.

congrats to our idols getting grammy noms. all are well deserved and hard earned. i wonder, how does this compare to other years? are there years when more than 3 idols got grammy noms?

given the negative press AI’s been getting, I’d say getting 3 idols nominated should speak well for the show.

  47. Incipit I do remember the heart attack, but she blogged after that. I did not see the message you referred to. The last blog I saw was about the new Idol judges. I hope all is well with her.

  48. LOL the poor UK, getting The Hoff. Although, he’s much more popular in Europe than here, or at least he used to be.

I don’t think David Hoffman has ever been particularly popular in the UK: certainly not music wise.

So – a strange choice. I can only guess that they’ve decided he’ll appeal in some way…?

  49. If true, it will be interesting to see how that theory plays out.

Alternative Theory: KFOG said “Farmer’s Daughter doesn’t fit our format. We are willing to interview Crystal, but is there something else we can play?”

LOL thats how my theory goes on these radio interviews/gigs. Got some mind reading going on. ;)

The thing I don’t understand is why they didn’t release the song 2 months ago and where was the radio promo weeks ago. Oh, Jive..

  50. Congrats to all the Idols with noms! Still so thrilled for Adam.

I am really getting excited for Crystal’s album and all the promo that’s lined up.

  51. KFOG put up the podcast link for their interview with Crystal that was played earlier this morning.

KFOG1045 Just posted a podcast with Concert for Kids opener Crystal Bowersox here: http://fb.me/yKOf8Ln9 3 hours ago reply

KFOG seems pretty enamoured with her — I’m pretty hopeful they’ll start to play more of her music once her album drops. They like to feature new artists. I’m also looking forward to hearing her perform (before the Doobie Brothers) on Dec. 7th! :)

  52. i wonder, how does this compare to other years? are there years when more than 3 idols got grammy noms?

I do know that every season (except S7) has produced Grammy nominations …even S6 which was considered subpar.

I know Daughtry got 5 after his season, and I think Carrie and Fantasia were also both nominated that year. I could be totally wrong of course. (The Grammys have been pretty kind to the Idol singers over the years though.)

  53. i wish adam win ,so he could be all over place in magazines, more buzz international.i hope hes 2 album be more goth, punk heavy metal type.

  54. Ohh, good news day in Idol-landia. Congrats to Carrie, Fantasia, Adam on their noms, and promo for Crystal is looking up! Interested to see how her December album sales will look if her single won’t be pushed til January. Took a glance at the full list of Grammy noms– some of the nominees are baffling, but pretty happy for a few. Sara Bareilles, Broken Bells, Muse, Arcade Fire, Hayley Williams, Eminem, among others. Is it me or has John Mayer been nominated for a Grammy in both pop and rock categories every year? Sometimes from the same album. It’s amazing. And has he won every year since he came out? They really LURVE him. (This is coming from a big John Mayer fan– I’m a been to his shows, have all his albums and concert DVDs kinda girl.) Anyway. Oops, there’s a Grammy thread. But that’s all I had to say.

  55. smeggs- I think you posted the Finnish link twice. Thanks though, love the Finns and Germans!

  56. Glad to see that Crystal is getting some interest from a few radio stations – even if it’s not many, I don’t think too many people expected that she’d be the sort to have a chart-topping single right off the bat (FD keeps showing up every other day or so on WTMX’s new music hour, and I thought I’d seen where they spun it once like a week ago in the very early morning hours, not just during the new music hour. It’s a start…) If the intent is to more or less promo the album until Christmas and then perhaps push towards radio early in the new year, then we’ll see if FD (or any other songs) start to make any impact. If they’re going to push towards AAA radio (along with HAC but not as their main focus) having her album gain some critical acclaim before pushing a single might actually work out well.

The thing that DOES surprise me though is that thus far, to the best of my knowledge, none of the Toledo stations have played her music. Of course, Toledo itself doesn’t have a HAC station or a AAA station – there are a couple of HAC stations in the outlying area but oddly enough, none in the city or suburbs. I still figured that either the CHR station (92.5) or more likely the AC station (101.5) would play her music at least a little, and I figured given the hometown interest there has been (and still is), they’d pick up on her early. Both stations played her demo of Holy Toledo for a number of weeks during S9 itself – the AC station alone got the song onto the Idols airplay chart by playing it several times a day.

  57. I just heard a Sugarland song on my local HAC (Stuck on You?) that kinda sounded like something Crystal could put out for radio. I’m guessing it was a country hit first and crossed over?

  58. Thanks though, love the Finns and Germans!

Awww thanks, I am German :)
And the Germans (but not me) love them some Hasselhoff, and they do watch the UK X-factor, that could have been a factor.

I am also glad the promo has finally kicked in for Crystal Bowersox, I will be watching.

Derek going to X-factor leaving DWTS on a high, very smart choice. (I hope)

And for me the best news ever (and I am still on a high from that from yesterday) is the Grammy nomination (Glammy nom) for Adam

smeggs- I think you posted the Finnish link twice. Thanks though, love the Finns and Germans!

    opps fixed it

  60. GreenHippo: Haha, you are welcome. Actually I am part German mixed with Mexican, how is that for a combo? “Glammy nom” LOL

  61. I’m guessing it was a country hit first and crossed over?

Yes, Sugarland is definitely cross over. It is in the top 10 (5?) country mediabase now. Was the HAC version the original reggae (album) version or the “safe” countrified version? Big difference in sound.

Their new album is way more rock/HAC than country.

  62. Gosh! The combination of those tweets and pics of Zorro are just excruciatingly cute!

    ETA:

Derek going to X-factor leaving DWTS on a high, very smart choice. (I hope)

I’m not so sure. If he’s going to be choreographing and not dancing on X-Factor, he’ll be mainly behind-the-scenes. If that what he wants fine, but he has a better showcase for his own dancing skills on DWTS, I think.

  63. Yes, Sugarland is definitely cross over. It is in the top 10 (5?) country mediabase now. Was the HAC version the original reggae (album) version or the “safe” countrified version? Big difference in sound.

Stuck Like Glue has gone recurrent on country radio I think, it picked at n°1 or n°2 (don’t remember exactly). The rap/reggae part was already in the original version.
Got to say that I don’t see Crystal doing that kind of song.

  64. Was the HAC version the original reggae (album) version or the “safe” countrified version? Big difference in sound.

I didn’t hear the whole song, just a little. Obviously enough to get the name wrong ;) I used Shazam on my phone to identify it. I didn’t hear any reggae though.

ETA: Just listened to the itunes previews and it wasn’t the reggae version.

The oh oh’s remind me of the Listen song that was posted here of Crystal’s, the part just before the whistling, it’s kinda strummy like this one. If HAC will play this, they might play something like that of hers.

Obviously I don’t listen to country at all, can you tell?

  65. Idols will have some competition early next year from Brit.

britneyspears I’m almost done with my new album and it will be coming out this March. I AM IN L-O-V-E WITH IT!

Whoa! @AllisonIraheta made it to the finals of EW’s Under-appreciated Entertainer of the Year bracket tourney! http://bit.ly/VoteTheRocker 8:02 AM Dec 1st via web Retweeted by ginaorr and 42 others

Is this just a retweet, or is Gina Orr formally associated wth Allison Iraheta in some way (manager?).

glad Adam’s won’t be hitting at this time!

  68. YAY for all the well wishes on Idol Grammy nods!!
Woohooo for Carrie Underwood. (wish she had gotten one more, but Hey? Can’t be greedy.)

I was absolutely FLOORED by the nomination for Adam and one for GLEE. But sublimely happy @ the same time!!!
EW has put up a photo gallery of “16 Surprises & Snubs.” I didn’t make it but past #10 and then thinking “Who cares? It’s all politics.” http://www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20332882_20446589,00.html

But I was kinda mildly angry with Lady A’s nom for Album of the Year –and this is coming from a huge fan who has seen them live 5 times. Its too soon & the album is not a great representation of what they can do. I would have put Brad Paisley’s “American Saturday Night” in that spot in a heartbeat. Alas….

If Best New Artist is industry and peer voted (not a fan text vote), I would bet that Drake would take it over Bieber.

  69. Also psyched for Crystal’s upcoming TV appearances. Will certainly catch her on Ellen and Chelsea Lately, cuz me love those ladies! The others I will have to (gladly) link from here at MJs.
I just preordered FD from iTunes. The pic/banner they have for Crystal is just gorgeous! Had never seen that photo before.

Sugarland’s Stuck Like Glue didn’t strike me as something Crystal would sing, BUT… when the country act was mentioned, a total light bulb went off. She could get a huge leg up on radio competition if she got to play some shows with them. Country fans are loyal and I think Crystal’s honesty in her songwriting could totally work in that genre.

  70. If Best New Artist is industry and peer voted (not a fan text vote), I would bet that Drake would take it over Bieber.

All the Grammy’s are awarded based on industry and peer votes. There is no text vote. I still think that Beiber could beat Drake, but I’m rooting for Florence and the Machine.

  71. Glad to see Gina’s tweet about Jive pushing Crystal to radio in January. Is it too much to ask that they push Kris’s single to radio in Janaury as well, pretty please???

  72. Stuck Like Glue has gone recurrent on country radio I think, it picked at n°1 or n°2 (don’t remember exactly). The rap/reggae part was already in the original version.

I think #2 on BBD and #1 on mediabase.

  73. Yay for #TeamWemma!! I’m happy to read that, although they will probably torture me with the storyline in the meantime.

I’m kinda looking forward to the torture. ;) [And I don’t mind seeing more of John Stamos on my tv screen]. They can frame this as a Ross/Rachel type of thing. Or…Dawson/Joey. Hee.

Rooting for Florence and Drake equally. Weird, I know. I do think however, that Usher is well loved by the industry big-wigs. And perhaps a win for Beiber is a win for Usher.

  75. i wish adam win ,so he could be all over place in magazines, more buzz international.i hope hes 2 album be more goth, punk heavy metal type.

Heh…..guess you don’t want him to get a third album or any radio play, huh?

  76. i just got the email from Adam Official about his grammy nomination. That’s just so awesome. I just had to jump on mjs and say “squee”!

    I’m so happy for him.

  77. I think it’s amazing Crystal is getting this much push for her disc and makes me hope that “Farmers Daughter” hits a nerve in the same way that Suzanne Vega’s “Luka” did. She might be trumpeted as one of the first Idols that have written most of her songs that the label approved of. She also could fir the singer song writer vibe that they wanted to win this year. The problem with Lee is is that he strikes me of a copy, of a copy, of a copy of a million other singers in the market now.

  78. Zorro Allen is so cute.He will keep Katy company when Kris is out on the road.

Derek going to X-factor leaving DWTS on a high, very smart choice. (I hope)

I’m not so sure. If he’s going to be choreographing and not dancing on X-Factor, he’ll be mainly behind-the-scenes.

I absolutely approve of Derek going to X-factor, hopefully he stays behind the scene choreographing. I’m sick of having to fast forward any dances with him on DWTS. I hope Dmitry Chaplin will get a chance to dance more if Derek is gone.

  79. i wish adam win ,so he could be all over place in magazines, more buzz international.i hope hes 2 album be more goth, punk heavy metal type.

That was really nice what you said. I agree also about the type of 2nd album he should make. He might not listen to us though. But I’m sure it will be great! :)

I’m Negativo, and I approve this message!!!

I am pretty sure, Adam is not in punk, heavy metal music. Adam likes to sing the words, not scream at the top of his lungs.

  82. I am pretty sure, Adam is not in punk, heavy metal music. Adam likes to sing the words, not scream at the top of his lungs.

Oh come on…. you are missing the message in translation. What I get from Tuti’s post is that this person wishes Adam success, no more no less. A little personal preference thrown in like salt and pepper to taste (lol).

I don’t think Punk and Heavy Metal are necessarily screaming at the top of one’s lungs. Oh yeah, Adam does scream at the top of his lungs. And I love it! :)

edit: Don’t you see how both views are kinda silly??

There is distinct lack of logic in tuti’s post. If somebody wishes Adam produced goth, punk or heavy metal music, they shouldn’t wish him a grammy on a perfectly pop song. Is there anyone in the history of Grammys who won in a pop category and then moved to goth/punk/heavy metal? A pop flop might bode well for heavy metal though.
