Surprise Presenter Rupert Murdoch Honors Simon Cowell With International Emmy Award

NEW YORK — News Corp. chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch was the surprise presenter here Monday night at the 38th International Emmy Awards, honoring Simon Cowell with the International Emmy Founders Award for his contributions to TV and entertainment around the world.

The award was previously announced, but the presenter remained a mystery until Murdoch walked onstage and said: “Good evening, everyone. I’m Rupert Murdoch.”

He told the crowded ballroom at the New York Hilton in midtown Manhattan that Cowell has “helped make Fox Broadcasting no. 1 season after season” over the past decade — thanks to his role on American Idol — and added: “I’m confident his launch of X Factor in the U.S. next year will build on that success for years to come.”

No garland required: Katharine McPhee gets spirited for Christmas

“I figured I’m still going to have to sing these songs whether there is garland in the studio or not, ” McPhee said last week from her home in Los Angeles — noting that since she is a California native, she’s already used to surf-weather Christmases.

For the next few weeks, McPhee’s life will revolve around promoting the album with a series of tree-lighting appearances — including Thanksgiving Day at the Macy’s at Lenox Square mall.

ADD CAROL BURNETT, THE NAZI-HUNTER, TO YOUR THANKSGIVING WEEK

FAA Insider: So how did this part come about?

Carol: “Well, I’ve been watching Glee since it began, from the get-go. And I go around the country every so often and I do a one-woman show where I do questions and answers, and the audience – it’s all random. And somebody asked me about what I would like to do on television. I said, ‘I would like to be a guest on Glee.’ And the audience all went, ‘Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.’ So actually, I called my agent and I said, ‘If they’ve ever got an opening or anything, you know, I would sure love to play in their sandbox.’ So he called back in a few weeks and he said, ‘Ask and ye shall receive.’ And so I said, ‘Oh, that’s great. I would just love to lock eyeballs, as we call it, with Jane Lynch, whom I adore, who plays Sue.’ And so they didn’t have a script, and we waited and all, and then finally they said I’d be playing Jane’s mother. And I said, ‘That’s sensational.’ And then I read on the internet that I’m a Nazi-hunter; a retired Nazi-hunter. Sue’s mother is a retired Nazi-hunter. Well, is that wonderful.”

‘Glee’ actress Amber Riley recalls ‘American Idol’ rejection

“With so many people in my family singing, it was kind of easy for me to go into clubs and sing background, ” she said. “This was my first time out of my comfort zone auditioning. When I did that and they told me no, my world crumbled. I was thinking these people are in the industry and they are telling me no. I’m not good enough to do this. I definitely thought that for a minute… It was a very humbling experience after being told how good I was the whole time.”

With some encouragement from her mother, who told Riley, “You know what you have and you know who you are and you know the gift you have. You just have to work harder, ” the “Glee” actress summoned the courage to quit her job at the home furnishing store Ikea and pursue music full time.

Glee’s Kurt and Blaine: To Kiss…or Not to Kiss?

Darren Criss, the show’s newbie breakout star who plays out gay high schooler Blaine, says he doesn’t even know if the guys’ relationship will take a romantic turn.

“Chris and I are both equally interested and curious to see where they go because there are days we’re like, ‘Oh, my God they’re totally going to be together’ and then there are other days we’re like, ‘No way are they going to be together, ‘ ” he told me yesterday at the American Music Awards.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Glee’s Max Adler – The Kiss That Has Lips Flapping

Radar: When you kissed Kurt, I felt that in an instant, I completely changed my opinion of you, and your character changed from being somewhat one dimensional to complex, and I actually felt sorry for you. How did people react to your character before the game-changing kiss, and how do they react now?

Max: “People reacted in the same exact way you did. They told me they saw me as a one dimensional dude, with not much depth, who was almost, to them, seen as a glorified extra who’s scenes would be predictable and he would be bullying just to bully. Of course, I had viewed this differently in my own head, haha, but I can see the audience’s point from their perspective. But now, again, they are reacting the same as you. They feel sympathetic towards Karofsky, and see he has a heart and he is just a scared, fearful, confused guy who isnt really quite sure how to deal with his emotions and where to even start.”

Wagner ‘is in the top half of X Factor vote every week’

For millions, Wagner Carrilho is worth voting for simply to vex Simon Cowell.

And the X Factor joke is far from over yet – as bookmakers back the 53-year-old to make it through to the very end of the contest.

Week after week, the public have voted to keep the Brazilian former PE teacher in the ITV reality show – against the judges’ wishes.

But although many speculated that he was simply scraping through the public vote thanks to a few diehard fans, it seems they are wrong. According to apparent internet leaks, Carrilho is regularly in the top half of the results.

Backstage at DWTS: Bristol Palin Explains Tonight’s “Bizarre” Scores

Actually, blame Renée, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mya and the entire cast of Chicago (from both Broadway and the big screen)!

“Look, Broadway’s never been done in the finals, so I thought we’d take it and add some creativity, ” Mark explained. “And I was bummed that we didn’t get three nines, but the judges weren’t satisfied and were comparing us to the movie—it’s a multi-million dollar movie! With the best dancers in the world!”

“And Renée Zellweger, ” added Bristol with a laugh. “It was bizarre because we had only five days to rehearse this on top of another dance. I am bummed about the scores because I thought the routine went so well and I had fun out there. It was definitely risky to do a performance like that, but it was good.”

Midler blasts ‘bland’ ‘Idol’, ‘X Factor’

Bette Midler has spoken out against music reality shows such as American Idol and The X Factor, describing the artists on both shows as ‘bland’.

“That’s really, really dangerous. That’s not good for culture. Not everyone is a star. It gives people a sense of entitlement, ” she told Richard Bacon’s BBC 5 Live show.

“I hear people who are a generation younger than me, who want all the perks and gratification that comes from being in our business for 20 years or more. They think they deserve it because, ‘I am, who I am’. It has pervaded my country. My country is 25th in mathematics and science but number one in self esteem.”

  1. Simon cracks me up! I’m going to miss that humor this season. Kudos to that cheesy show and thank goodness for the talent ya find because of it.

Matt G. Have mercy, could he be anymore adorable. I’m so proud of that boy!

  2. “but the judges weren’t satisfied and were comparing us to the movie—it’s a multi-million dollar movie! With the best dancers in the world!”

“And Renée Zellweger,” added Bristol with a laugh

Does Bristol actually think she’s in a position to diss Renée Zellweger’s dancing? IDK Bristol, I don’t watch DWTS, but while flipping channels, we stopped to watch you “dance” that Chicago number and people who live in houses made of the fake glass that stuntmen use because it breaks into a million pieces so easily should probably not be throwing stones.

Seriously, Bristol, I’ve seen bears that dance better than you.

Bristol Palin’s Alaska: Dancing with the Bears.

    LOL

  4. Amber Riley isn’t good enough for Idol. Even with all the auto-tuning and other vocal manipulations they use on that show you can tell she is sharp half the time. All she has going for her is vocal power. Lea is really the only one from Glee who had a chance of being successful on Idol.

Who are other singers that have been rejected by idol? I know Hillary Scott and Colbie Caillat were (and frankly they aren’t good enough vocalists to have made it on idol either, except for season 9 maybe lol).

Lea would be branded as too Broadway. And being that she has worked extensively on Broadway and has those inflections, they would be right on that opinion. For once.

Amber, IMO, is good enough for Idol. She may not have been at the time she auditioned–no one knows. She’s one of the Gleeks that isn’t autotuned to death. I like her voice–it has a Jennifer Hudson quality to it. Then again, lots of folks hated Jennifer’s voice during her Idol run. And still do.

OMG, THANK YOU! I thought I was the only one who thought that. When she goes for the diva numbers like I’m Telling You she just pales in comparison to JHud or any of the real divas– like I mean seriously, she sounds like she’s screaming and trying too hard. I like her for just the random trills and runs and stuff she injects into group numbers, but not for an entire song.

ETA: I didn’t watch JHud’s season, but I love her voice and singing now. From what I hear though, she’s improved a lot and gained a lot of control since the time she was on Idol. I wouldn’t know.

  7. Then again, lots of folks hated Jennifer’s voice during her Idol run. And still do.

Just speaking personally – it wasn’t her *voice* that I didn’t care for, it was her whole wild-eyed, over the top, kinda mouthy persona. And it was in a season loaded up with big-voiced “divas” so I really think her personality is what pushed her out earlier. I could be totally alone in that, but I don’t think her voice (though maybe her control over it) was the main issue. I feel like sometimes JHud’s Idol run is rewritten into a little bit of mythology.

  8. I wonder if they’ll cancel the Lifehouse/Kris concert tonight? Evidently the roads in Seattle are sheets of ice and newscasts are telling people to just stay home rather than trying to drive anywhere

Yeah, Jennifer’s performing skills left a lot to be desired back then lol. Really, she had a couple strong weeks, but she was still considered far behind Latoya and Fantasia.

I wonder if they’ll cancel the Lifehouse/Kris concert tonight? Evidently the roads in Seattle are sheets of ice and newscasts are telling people to just stay home rather than trying to drive anywhere

I hope so.. then maybe they can reschedule. If the roads are really that bad, few will attempt to take the drive. That sucks.

  11. Girlygirl- heard from a friend of mine in Seattle and I wouldn’t be suprised if they did cancel it. Like everyone is saying it is a huge sheet of ice right now and usually areas like that do not have the snow equipment to get it taken care of in a timely manner.

As far as JHud- I remember that season all too well, lol. The three divas ( jennifer, LaToya and Fantasia) drove me nuts. It was like it was one big screamfest, and every week it seemed like they tried to one up each other. Maybe that is why so many people liked JPL that year, his voice wasn’t the greatest but his voice was like soft little cottonballs after hearing those three, lol. I remember wanting to punch Sir Elton for insinuating the US was racist. No, Elton, we just want the wailing to stop :)

  12. I feel like sometimes JHud’s Idol run is rewritten into a little bit of mythology.

I didn’t get the impression that many liked Jennifer on any level, be it musically or personally. I recall some radio personalities ripping her apart, no matter what. Actually, LaToya seemed to be the most liked from the shows I listened to at the time.

  13. Girlygirl
Where is Lifehouse/Kris concert? I can call and ask if u want

  14. Does Bristol actually think she’s in a position to diss Renée Zellweger’s dancing? I

Kirsten, what are you talking about? Bristol was saying Renée was a reason the movie was better than her own performance.

  15. I wonder if they’ll cancel the Lifehouse/Kris concert tonight? Evidently the roads in Seattle are sheets of ice and newscasts are telling people to just stay home rather than trying to drive anywhere

It’s bad. My mom had an early flight today and could not get ANYONE (cabs, shuttles, friends) willing to make a normally 10 minute drive to the airport. It’s super icy.

    Bummer for Lifehouse/Kris Allen fans.

  16. Kirsten, what are you talking about? Bristol was saying Renée was a reason the movie was better than her own performance.

I thought Bristol was saying it was tough to be compared to “the best dancers in the world”, pregnant pause, and Renee Zellweger (with a laugh). The implication is that Renee is not one of the former group. It’s like saying Idol winners are some of the best vocalists in the world, pregnant pause, and Lee Dewyze (with a laugh). The implication is that Lee doesn’t belong in the first group. Could be read as a bit of a diss. On the other hand, Bristol’s not wrong– Renee’s not among the best dancers in the world (though she acquitted herself just fine in the movie, IMO).

  17. MJ,

Thanks for posting the video of Matt and Anna at the Grand Ole Opry! They have a nice chemistry on stage, and looked and sounded amazing.

I’m looking forward to Anna’s upcoming CD with its unique vision and all-star collaborators. It seems that Anna’s label wants to involve Matt further in the promotion of the CD, so I hope that will give him some great opportunities.

  18. Ironically even though schools are closed lots of people not working today but I see beer trucks making their deliveries hahaha…yeah my drive is deffiatly interesting today

  19. Wow Matt and Anna sounded incredible at the Opry! Matt just keeps getting better and better! Can’t wait until his Christmas show December 11th! He said in a recent interview that his single will be come out eithher at Christmas time or Valentines! You can buy both Thank You and You Don’t Know Me on itunes now!

  20. It’s icy here, but it’s not impossible to get around. But they aren’t going to get a great showing tonight. Public transit sucks when there’s snow in Seattle. The hills, you know :)

  21. Does Bristol actually think she’s in a position to diss Renée Zellweger’s dancing?

FWIW, I don’t think Bristol was dissing Renee Zellweger. Renee is a huge movie star and it read more to me like Bristol was talking about the movie having amazing dancers, and a huge star like Renee Zellweger. I don’t see any implied or intended diss of Renee at all.

  22. A big thank-you to megs0215 for recording Matt Giraud & Anna Wilson at the Opry, and to MJ for posting it. Loved it! Matt looked so relaxed and sounded great, as did his duet partner, Anna Wilson. Loved the exchange of hats! I met Matt briefly at an AI Tour M&G, and when I told him how much I enjoyed his version of “Human Nature,” he burst into song a capella! After a few of the performances on award shows recently, it’s nice to see artists who can really sing and sound great live.

  23. I’m not sure that Lee review could be called truly positive. Fair, but not positive. They called the album “hit and miss.”

  24. girlygirl
I can’t get ahold of an actual person for the Lifehouse/Kris show but I will keep an ear out. I follow the local radio stations on twitter hopefully they will say something if the show is cancelled.

Let you know if I hear anything

  25. Really nice review by AMA hits of Danny’s Canadian concert in BC at the Red Robison Theatre:

His personality and talent came through in his performance. He was full of energy, interactive with the crowd and he seemed as genuine on stage as he did when I met him earlier. Let me tell you, I’m not a country fan, but something about his music just made me change my entire perspective of what country is. I’m definitely a convert. I left the concert feeling amazed. I’m so glad i stayed for the concert.
I spoke with one of the ushers and she told me that this was the largest lineup she had ever seen for an autograph signing.

    http://www.amahits.com/index.cfm

They are a website devoted to music by new artists; sounds like the writer works for a paper and he tried to get a camera interview but Danny didn’t have time. Not really sure if the paper and website are connected or if this is just a blog type site, but nice, nonetheless.

Aww, he was so impressed they put up a banner for Danny’s fund raising campaign (they are trying to get enough $$ to run the future homeless shelter they just had a 70k building donated for).

  26. The Lifehouse/Kris Allen concert tonight in Seattle has been officially canceled.

    lifehousemusic
Just found out the the show tonight in Seattle has been postponed due to weather/ice etc.. The roads are bad and it’s better to keep everyone safe. We apologize for the inconvenience and we will make up the show

    ETA:

    lifehousemusic
The Portland show is still on and most likely won’t be postponed.. Again, sorry, especially to those who may be already making the trek here..

  27. My country is 25th in mathematics and science but number one in self esteem

Yes, that is embarrassing, but why blame it on the AI contestants, who, aside from the joke auditions, generally have some actual talent and more importantly, are risking humiliation, putting in hard work, and simply GOING for their dream? Sure, some of them are entitled, or think they’re stars already, but mostly, through the rigors of AI, which is like celebrity boot camp, they realize that the business IS a lot of hard work. I don’t get it. Do these people criticizing AI even watch the show or are they making assumptions based on the William Hungs and Bikini Girls they’ve heard about?

  28. Well, now that I think of it, American Idol is definitely why *I* am ashamed to be an American! Those lazy kids and their damn egos…

(I also got a chuckle – well, a snort – out of the notion of Bette Midler being any sort of bland police)

  29. Here is how bad it got in Washington state;

wastatepatrol: in 24 hrs WSP responded to 1557 collisions and 1274 disabled motorists statewide.

  30. songsungblue-
The Musiqtone reviewer gave Lee’s album a four out of five-that sounds pretty positive to me. He went through the album song by song and liked most of them.
I just listened to Lee on Bradley on Air. He was interviewed and performed an acoustic set of songs-he sounds fantastic live, especially the angsty version of Sweet Serendipity.

  31. Looks like pre sales are going pretty good for Adam so far. from RCA Ed:

The “WWFM” (almost) instant grat download is coming through now, guys, and they’re back-tracking ALL order to make sure everyone receives it. Sorry for the delay, but we caught a skip in the file delivered to us and had to re-ingest, blah, blah, blah.

I’m sure there are a lot of fans, like me, who weren’t interested in remix CDs (although I did purchase one of the WWFM ones but not the whole EP), who were more than willing to shell out for an acoustic. :-)

  35. For anyone interested I just got my email for the WWFM download from the Acoustic Live EP so keep an eye out on your email if your expecting yours

  36. koshka- I am also waiting to buy it on Itunes. And I agree lorismile- I had no interest in the remixes. I think the EP will even appeal to all those people that liked AI Adam but not FYE Adam.

  37. I didn’t like FYE because it was so overproduced, except for Fever – which is a great cut, IMO. But I’d consider the acoustic EP because I do like Adam’s voice.

  38. For anyone interested I just got my email for the WWFM download from the Acoustic Live EP so keep an eye out on your email if your expecting yours

Thanks for the information, I was wondering what happened to the WWFM download. Count me in as one who didn’t buy the remixes neither. I didn’t need 5 versions of the same song but just brought the 1 I did like.

  39. Here is a hint of what the roads are like in Seattle…this was Capital Hill last night

OMG, why did some people still walk around. scary .
I’m glad now that the concert was postponed. It is safer that way.

  40. Thanks so much for the video of Matt Giraud’s and Anna Wilson’s duet. I bought this song on iTunes, and it is STUNNING! Matt is truly destined for greatness!
