Exclusive: Neil Diamond Feels Sorry for ‘American Idol’ Contestants

“’American Idol’ isn’t typical of people going into the music business. These youngsters have a chance to express their talent to millions of people and it’s very scary. I would not want do it myself – certainly not in the beginning of my career, ” Diamond told Pop Tarts while promoting his new album “Dreams.” “But the best advice I can offer people is to love what you’re doing, love your work and be ready to work, work and work. With that combination and a little bit of luck, you might have a chance to get out there and have your music heard.”

CKX, Inc. Reports Third Quarter and Nine-Month 2010 Results

For the three months ended September 30, 2010, revenue decreased $7.3 million to $80.1 million, a decrease of 8.3% from the prior year period. Of this, $6.9 million was due to the impact of a second season of So You Think You Can Dance in 2009. Revenue from American Idol decreased $1.1 million, due primarily to decreased revenue from sponsorship deals, offset by higher touring revenue. Revenue at the Presley Business grew $1.1 million, or 7.8%, due to higher royalty revenue, including revenue from the Viva ELVIS Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas which opened in February.

Operating income before depreciation, amortization and non-cash stock compensation (“OIBDAN”) decreased $10.4 million to $6.0 million. Excluding executive separation costs of $0.9 million, severance and restructuring costs of $8.3 million at 19 Entertainment, and merger-related costs of $0.7 million, OIBDAN declined $0.5 million as compared to 2009. 19 Entertainment OIBDAN, excluding one-time severance and restructuring costs, decreased $0.5 million due to the revenue decline, the new creative consulting arrangement with Simon Fuller and a $1.3 million decline in foreign exchange gains, offset by the benefits from the efforts to eliminate non-core businesses and related overhead. Presley Business OIBDAN decreased $0.5 million due to a provision for estimated losses related to the early termination of a sublease of a property leased by the business in downtown Memphis. Corporate expenses, excluding executive separation costs and merger-related costs, declined $0.4 million.

The Company reported an operating income of $1.5 million, a decrease of $9.5 million from 2009.

Net loss attributable to CKX, Inc. was $2.4 million in 2010, compared to net income attributable to CKX, Inc. of $11.2 million in the third quarter of 2009. Diluted loss per common share was $0.03 in 2010, compared to diluted income per share of $0.12 per share in 2009.

Glee’s Jayma Mays Teases A ‘Pretty Shocking’ Twist For Emma

That’s what is so great about when a scene is set in her office – it’s like a little Easter egg hunt.
Yes, there are lots of Easter eggs there! Speaking of that, now that Emma has been working on her OCD and the rest of it, you really have too look for it but you can find in some of the scenes that on her desk she has made a triangle out of her paper clips rather than have them lined up. And pencils will be askew on her desk where they used to be really straight. She’s slowly but surely getting a little messy.

What else can you reveal about what’s coming up for Emma?
It’s always tricky with these questions, how not to give something away, but… there is definitely something shocking that’s going to happen in Emma’s life. In a couple episodes, there is something that is going to be pretty shocking. But don’t make me say what – they’ll kill me.

  1. Carrie’s going to be living out more than a few women’s fantasies playing up there with Keith Urban AND Brad Paisley ;)

I’m so freaking excited about this I don’t even know what to do with myself. This is huge!!

  2. Kara DioGuardi, a former judge on American Idol described Williams as being someone she will remember

Nobody in charge seemed to remember that Justin tried out for season 8 of idol, or that he was a member of White Chocolate during group week.

  3. Anoop was doing rehearsal today for his upcoming performance on the Mo’Nique show. He’s going to be performing “My Name” up there. I am glad that Anoop has gotten this promotional opportunity. From his Twitter for today:

Rehearsal w/ @cicikelley and the dancers for the Mo’Nique performance. Pretty weird to look at yourself in a mirror while you’re performing.

  4. loved the derek interview :D

he didnt rrly answer the same-sex couples question tho

    and ITA totally w/this!!!

William Shatner called you “America’s Greatest Dancer” recently on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Is it even possible to argue with the Shat?
Talk about a shock. People on Twitter started telling me about it. What a compliment.

  5. Ok, I’m still cranky … I still can’t listen to Lindsey with an open mind after the way she treated David Cook in her last interview with him. But just for the record for those people that aren’t familiar with his record, David Cook has co-writing/solo credits on 13 songs released on his debut album on the various versions. Each individual version had at least 11 of his co-writes/solos on it.

I understand that Lee has a writing credit on 10 of 11 songs. That’s terrific for him. So he has the highest percentage, but not the most songs with writing credits. And then, of course, there’s Crystal with all of her solo writing credits. Now that is an accomplishment. Congrats to Crystal.

But leave it to Lindsey to be incorrect or at the very least, misleading. (Can you tell I don’t like her? Yeah.)

  6. http://freshology.com/

That is too cute! Thanking him for the “plug” and showing the video that showed it! Wonder if he got his free shipment! Love it!… “free shipping” with promo code: ThankyouAdam!!!

  7. How did Lindsey treat David Cook in her last interview – do you have a link?
I really like how Lee explains the background behind his songs and lyrics. It will make it even more interesting to hear his songs.

  8. I guess he is doing some kind of performance in the philippines:

RT @sonymusicphil: @DavidArchie LIVE at SMNorthEdsa Skydome Nov17, 5pm! FREE pass for CD buyers at the gate only! Tweet this #archieinmanila if your coming!

  9. I feel like most of the Idol bloggers especially Lyndsey, Jim C. And Slezak all have biases that show alot. Then again, at least they’re pretty upfront about their likes and dislikes.

  10. CindyM, Lyndsey “reviewed” DCTR based on one song and didn’t even listen to the entire album. When called on it, her original blog was pulled and revised. As to the last interview, she spent three quarters of it talking about Adam and Kris, instead of talking about David, so yeah she is biased and the most of the DC fanbase take her with a grain of salt.

  11. Revenue from American Idol decreased $1.1 million, due primarily to decreased revenue from sponsorship deals, offset by higher touring revenue.

If I’m reading this correctly, it’s very hard to believe. There has been no evidence so far that the tour took in nearly as much as last year’s. Maybe it could be true if they cut expenses to the bone and slashed tour salaries of the Idols significantly.

  12. Apologies, I’ve been informed that Lee has a couple of bonus tracks, one that is a co-write for sure, so I understated his writing credits. He will have 11 or 12. I still dislike Lindsey.

The interview I’m referring to is the one where she spent over 60-75 % of the time talking to David Cook about Kris & Adam, instead of about his record and tour. Then she made some comment about how he didn’t seem to have much time for her. Well, duh!

On another topic, RCA ED has made an appearance on DCO. It must be the end of times.

rca ed: It’ll be worth the wait guys, as will the new website. I’m sorry it’s taking so long but everything’s still coming together. Wish I could say more, but all I got is “hang in there!”

  13. Really liked the Lee interview. I’ve been a reluctant fan of his since day one. Actually, I liked him UNTIL he sang Hinder (week 2?). Still voted for him most weeks cause I saw there was more talent than was shown. Giving him so much writing freedom shows even the execs believed. And I do wonder if Simon snuck a listen to Lee’s CD’s prior to Idol. He was pretty high up on him from the start.

I think Lee will have a fine career, and Sweet Serendipity has been stuck in my head for weeks. And I haven’t even listened to it for weeks. A fine song.

Never would have pegged Castro as a budding star in the Christian radio market back on Idol. Maybe that’s his niche.

  14. On another topic, RCA ED has made an appearance on DCO. It must be the end of times.

LOL. Words of reassurance, like “hang in there” are always good to read, especially for the more nervous amongst us – but Kyle’s Blog message was even better – “stay strong and keep this awesome streak of patience going cause when you see us again, it’ll be worth it.” We could be totally awesome!! since we don’t have another option. ;)

wordnerdarchie, I am also in that Antipathy Group – I have chapter and verse and the link for the interview in question – I just won’t give that page any hits. Ought to have saved the first ‘review’, but I didn’t. Who knew it would be taken down and revised? Still, between the Season 8 lines on the video interview, David charmingly made his point, and Parker backtracked on her own blog. So that was good.

  15. Lyndsey Parker. Blech. Her review of Cook’s album based on one song and her subsequently trying to cover her tracks by pulling the review and revising it later is just indicative of how she conducts herself as a journalist. Unprofessional is right!

Really, Lyndsey, you mean Cook didn’t seem to have much time for you after you spent 75% of your interview talking about Kris and Adam and asking him about Season 8? You don’t say.

I know many in the Cook fandom who actively avoid clicking on anything that might lead to her blog and for sure never go to her blog on purpose.

  16. Justin williams was in my town in New Zealand, I never knew he was here, I liked him and would have gone to see him, dam!

  17. Nice interview w/ Lee and Lyndsey Parker. There are definitely biases among the usual suspects, but they all seem to give nice interviews, regardless.

  18. And then, of course, there’s Crystal with all of her solo writing credits. Now that is an accomplishment. Congrats to Crystal.

Actually Lee has solo writing credits too. Just not on LIU. Same goes for DC and KA

  19. Reminder:

Please don’t link to iTunes or Amazon in the comments section…especially when I have a big honking post with affiliate links up on the blog already.

  20. Not fond of “Lonely”. So far, it’s my least favorite of the three song clips.

I feel like most of the Idol bloggers especially Lyndsey, Jim C. And Slezak all have biases that show alot.

Thats a slight understatement. LOL ;) I don’t really hold it against them unless they are getting all fanboy/fangirl giddy. I just laugh though when anyone uses their opinions as support for their fav.

Nice interview w/ Lee and Lyndsey Parker. There are definitely biases among the usual suspects, but they all seem to give nice interviews, regardless.

Absolutely. They really are the first to ‘get’ the idols. We can usually get at least one really good interview from one of the three usual suspects. For that I thank them.

  22. But just for the record for those people that aren’t familiar with his record, David Cook has co-writing/solo credits on 13 songs released on his debut album on the various versions. Each individual version had at least 11 of his co-writes/solos on it.

Thanks for posting that info. I wasn’t aware the David had so many co-writing/solo credits on his debut CD. Good for him! I’m glad to see that Idols have had more writing credits on their debut CDs of late.

  23. I like Lyndsey Parker. I think she is pretty fair.

I wouldn’t say she is “fair” – but I really don’t care whether Idol bloggers are biased or not. Opinions are what make the season fun – even when I completely disagree.

The only thing that stands out to me as an issue in Lyndsey’s interviews – and I have watched several, including one where she was interviewed about herself – is that despite covering the show she actually doesn’t keep up with certain stats, aspects of the show, etc. Which is totally fine, except then she uses them as talking points in her interviews (“You were the first to ever…” “You have the most…”). As a fan of the show, it drives me crazy when she is not quite right, even when she is giving a compliment to the person she is interviewing. She should just speak to what she knows if she doesn’t want to follow the show that closely (which is totally fine, not everyone needs to be an encyclopedia of idol, like Slezak who remembers minutia :))

That said, I have really appreciated her long interviews with Blake and Brooke, etc. Got to hear some really interesting things, and in the end, all an interview can promise you is a chance to hear from the interviewee.

  24. Ellen secretly arranged a meeting between Kellie and her No. 1 celebrity crush, Clint Eastwood, on the show.

OMG, that was the funniest meeting ever! Clint didn’t seem to mind Kellie sitting on his lap and putting his hand on her chest! I do believe he blushed.

Neil Diamond is being much too modest. If they had American Idol in 1966 and he auditioned, he would have won. Good looks, charisma, and a great voice is a winning combination. Plus, he wrote his own songs. Good interview comments.

Nobody in charge seemed to remember that Justin tried out for season 8 of idol, or that he was a member of White Chocolate during group week.

The whole group was outstanding, and I thought for sure Justin would make it. I wish him the very best.

  25. If I’m reading this correctly, it’s very hard to believe. There has been no evidence so far that the tour took in nearly as much as last year’s. Maybe it could be true if they cut expenses to the bone and slashed tour salaries of the Idols significantly.

I was wondering this too when I read it… any solid reasons folks?

  26. i enjoyed the lee interview with lyndsey. it was fun, interesting and very insightful. i always love hearing artists talk about their music, how it came about and its meaning to them. this makes me feel more connected to their songs/albums. maybe that’s why i have fun watching shows like VH1 storytellers. i also liked the fact that lee is really all about his music -no frills, no intrigues, none of that. hearing these just made me all the more excited for the album (and for the second part of this interview) :)
