Clash of the Simons: Fuller and Cowell are gearing up to go head-to-head in the biggest battle of egos TV has ever seen

‘This will be a fight to the bitter end, ’ says one Hollywood producer who knows both men well. ‘For a long time Simon Cowell has lived in Simon Fuller’s shadow and he is deter-mined to show that he can build and launch a multi-million dollar brand in the United States.

‘This is not about money – both men have more money than they could spend in their lifetimes. This is about power, control and enormous egos. When I talked to Cowell the other day he said his money “wasn’t enough”. He wants to prove himself as a global player in the international television market.

’Friends say the last time the two men were in the same room was in May after the final of American Idol, a show created by Fuller, but starring Cowell.

VP Biden featured at Keating rally

Magnus, 20, also said her appearance had nothing to do with her support for a particular candidate.

She said she was in Philadelphia recording a song recently when a producer asked her whether she wanted to sing for the vice president.

“I said, ‘Vice president of what?'”

“This doesn’t have to do with my personal views, ” she added. “It’s out of respect for the vice president. It’s just an honor to be asked to do it.”

(Edward) Goreyfest to die for in Yarmouth

Even the Cape’s most famous Gorey fan, Siobhan Magnus, the “American Idol finalist” with a much-publicized “Ghastlycrumb Tinies” tattoo on her arm, was scheduled to make an appearance, Wolk said.

But fun and finery aside, the partygoers were there to catch a last glimpse of Gorey’s famous fur coat collection, scheduled to sell at auction in New York City Dec. 8.

Dermot O’Leary wants US X Factor job

He told Time Out: “It would be duplicitous of me to say that I wouldn’t be interested in it – of course I would. I do want to work out there.”

It is thought that Dermot will have to overcome a challenge from American Idol host Ryan Seacrest- who is also said to be under consideration for the post.

Dermot said of his rival: “He’s done a great job, the guy’s a workaholic. He’s got nerves of steel.”

  1. Hoping everything goes well for the Slighs. My granddaughter is a Halloween baby. She’s 2 today. Halloween will never be the same around here anymore.

If Ryan gets the X Factor gig, would he be able to do both American Idol and X Factor?

  2. If Ryan gets the X Factor gig, would he be able to do both American Idol and X Factor?

Sure. But I guess that he would travel from one X Factor audition to one American Idol audition and then to film X Factor Bootcamp and Judges’ houses, host live X Factor shows and film Hollywood week and then also do American Idol live shows.

  3. CHRIS_Daughtry We’re trying to get to San Diego. Got a private gig tonight, then going home!!!

Simon wouldn’t seriously consider hiring Ryan would he? That would just make him American Idol Reboot. Doesn’t he have to bring some freshness? Surely Ryan doesn’t need yet another job.

I think he should bring over Louis as a judge. Louis is fun and Simon getting frustrated with him would be a good shtick.

Clash of the Simons: Fuller and Cowell are gearing up to go head-to-head in the biggest battle of egos TV has ever seen

That was an interesting article. When I saw the picture of Fuller, I thought “Huh, that’s what he looks like”. I’ve followed Idol like a hawk and I couldn’t remember having seen a picture of him. So, I concur with the article’s many statements about how he is a behind the scenes guy who doesn’t seek publicity.

On the other hand, if that article is true, I think Cowell should seek some counseling. That article makes him sound like he has some issues.

And anybody else find it extremely hypocritical that Cowell is all bittercakes about how he’s the face of Idol, yet Fuller makes more money when Cowell is always getting mad at the Idols and X-Factor contestants for not being eternally subservient and grateful to the shows and judges that discovered them? He’s always quick to point out that they would be nowhere without the show. Well, Simon, you’d be nothing but a fourth-rate A&R guy if it hadn’t been for Fuller. Suck it up buttercup and enjoy what you have. I’m not striving that he can’t strive to beat Fuller, but don’t be bitter about Fuller.

Heh. “Wrestling” vs “Boxing”. That’s a good analogy.

  5. Danny’s first show outside the US as a recording artist seems to have gone very well in Vancouver. Have only found one photo so far, but a number of people were tweeting before and after. Other than that Danny did his usual signing after the show, no details though, drat. Mostly just a lot of omg squeeing… :)

    Awesome show tonight, @DannyGokey!

@dannygokey great performance at the Robinson theatre. Killed it!!

Wat an amazing show. Look out for my full review coming soon. One word to describe him “genuine”!

Oh man I am forever in love. So amazing!

Just saw @dannygokey in concert, best concert of my life. Seriously!

  6. I used to be a Simon Cowell guy all the way until I saw him on the X Factor. I’m now completely rethinking his contribution to Idol. His thing on Idol was “mean cop” which I liked. It’s pretty scary to see him on X Factor calling utter mediocrity “brilliant,” His taste level is kind of corny. So fourth rate A&R guy is sounding on the money.

  7. This is probably the right place to talk about this, jpfan posted this in the season 10 commercial thread:

Nothing against Cook but this is the main reason why women are struggling to win Idol. At least the X Factor won’t have this problem. That show is completely rigged to produce a Katy Perry/Ke$ha type winner.

I wonder what problems will X Factor have.

One of the accolades that AI has always gotten is that the people can sing, so will people who have gotten used to that, readily accept a show where that is not the case.

One of the knocks against season 8 was that contestants like Tatiana and Norman got as far as they did, when they would have usually been cut during the Hollywood round, so will Simon not take the hint and let people like Jedward through to the top 10 (or whatever number they do).

Also, I know that Mateja said that X Factor shows how these people will fit into the current pop landscape, but I don’t think that this is something that can be achieved just by dressing people, who haven’t achieved anything, up in silly costumes, giving them backup dancers, and using fancy lighting and manipulative editing. None of this stuff makes someone a popstar.

Simon’s first concern is money, not talent. He’ll do and say whatever he thinks it takes to fatten his wallet.

  9. I think Simon is still a great television personality but X Factor is def a cheesier show than Idol. (From the few clips I’ve seen)

  10. How funny that Siobhan was clueless (humble?) enough that she asked, “vice president of what?”!! She did a really nice job singing in 40 degree windy weather–love her voice.

  11. How many AI rejects are we going to see leave the AI auditions and immediately signup for X-Factor? I wonder if that will be allowed? Simon C. would probably love to scoop up an AI reject and make them a star on X-Factor.

Wouldn’t doing that just highlight how manufactured his show is?

  13. How many AI rejects are we going to see leave the AI auditions and immediately signup for X-Factor?

    Hmm, Angela Martin?…..

I don’t think they can stop people from trying out for both. I also think the first season of X-Factor here will see a lot of hollywood rejects (the Tatianas of the world) and well as those people that try out for every/all reality TV shows possible. Like the people that try out for idol and SYTYCD. Also the people that try out every year thinking that some how THIS will be their year. If you are one that watches the audition episodes of the “talent” type of reality shows you will probably see a lot of familiar faces. People that get. Put in the bad auditions.

Haha that would be an interesting game…identify the reality show this auditioner has tried out for heheeh

X Factor UK was not always the same as it is now. It slowly developed over the years. The production values increased over the years. In the beginning it was a lot like Idol. But then, I think Simon Cowell slowly realized that these days, popstars don’t have to be the best singers to be successful. And that some great singers just don’t have what it takes to be a popstar. So, suddenly they started doing these great production numbers. Sure, singing still matters to a certain extent – but they are not looking for perfection (or something close to it).
It’s still a TV show and meant to entertain people. That’s why acts like Jedward, Wagner, Mary, Diva Fever, Storm Lee and so on make it to the live shows. Some can sing, some don’t, but none of them are meant to win the show – they are there to make it interesting for a few weeks. Then there is a circle that Simon loves because the acts in it are marketable (Cher, One Direction, etc.) and then there is a circle of acts that can also sing and another circle of filler.

Simon is still Simon. His standards and goals on this show are different, but then again, X Factor is not the same show as Idol. Simon is still interesting, actually all judges are interesting TV characters. People watch the show for great performances and epic trainwrecks. It’s all about entertainment.

  16. I said yesterday that my opinion of Siobhan had gone up substantially due to her being politically active and engaged.

This article just sent that opinion back to the basement.

If you’re going to perform at a campaign event, OWN it. I don’t care what side it’s for – although I’d have more respect for supporting a blue side – if you’re performing, it’s going to be interpreted as support that candidate.

  17. One of the knocks against season 8 was that contestants like Tatiana and Norman got as far as they did, when they would have usually been cut during the Hollywood round,

But they made for fun TV- who didn’t enjoy hatin on Bikini girl, or watching Kara do it?

One reason S9 was so boring, really no fun personalities.

Wat an amazing show. Look out for my full review coming soon. One word to describe him “genuine”!

Hope we get an official Canadian review of Danny’s show.

Congrats to Chris Sligh! Hopefully a child can melt his cold, cynical heart (much as I love it sometimes) a little :)

  18. Then there is a circle that Simon loves because the acts in it are marketable (Cher

IMO, that girl can’t sing, but maybe she is marketable in the UK.

I think Simon Cowell slowly realized that these days, popstars don’t have to be the best singers to be successful. And that some great singers just don’t have what it takes to be a popstar.

I think AI has shown that there is no such thing as the perfect singer, or even the best singer, it’s all subjective, and more about a singer striking an emotional connection with the song and the audience. But, I think Simon is all about molding or manufacturing Popstars, and I don’t think that will work here. Nobody knows what will make someone a popstar, whatever it is, it’s not going to be discovered on a show that lasts for 2 and a half months.

  19. Hifi releasing another round of Adam’s demos? (Rufftown Records?)

I wonder if they are doing this to coincide with the release of Adam’s acoustic EP?

I still see “Take One” at the Target near me. It is amazing to me that the album is still available for purchase. I wonder if we will ever get numbers on how that CD did?

  20. Nobody knows what will make someone a popstar, whatever it is, it’s not going to be discovered on a show that lasts for 2 and a half months.

I concur with that statement and add – ” and aimed at a such a transient market that will already have moved on by the time it gets there, already changed to the Next New Thing.

  21. another pic from Danny’s concert last night. I don’t expect him to sell out like Adam did in this venue but it seems that the attendance was less than spectacular :(

    http://twitpic.com/32fo4y

  22. One of the accolades that AI has always gotten is that the people can sing, so will people who have gotten used to that, readily accept a show where that is not the case.

I think it is impossible to predict what US X Factor will be by looking to UK X Factor, after all American Idol doesn’t exactly resemble all the other POP Idol shows throughout the World. I’m not passing judgement on XFactor US until I see how they adapt if for the market here.

The difference is that the same person isn’t running all the pop idol shows. The common denominator between the UK and the US show will be Simon, and he’s shown that he loves substance over quality, is more interested in what’s popular than in what’s good, and has questionable taste.

  24. Hifi releasing another round of Adam’s demos? (Rufftown Records?)

I wonder if they are doing this to coincide with the release of Adam’s acoustic EP?

Yeah, that appears to be EXACTLY what they’re doing. No shame. Ugh.

  25. Yeah, that appears to be EXACTLY what they’re doing. No shame. Ugh.

And if they release physically, it’s going to be the only new Adam product for sale in stores during the holidays. Slimy but smart. There’s been zero indication that the acoustic EP will be physical. Sure would be nice to have to compete against Take Two. I doubt they sell many copies, but casual shoppers may pick it up.

  26. another pic from Danny’s concert last night. I don’t expect him to sell out like Adam did in this venue but it seems that the attendance was less than spectacular :(

Um that pic was from way before the concert even started. If you noticed there are people seated back further with chairs in between-I doubt they all bought seats further back if closer seats were available  Looks like it is even early enough that someone is warming up since the lights are out and someone is out with a guitar. Sometimes he has an opener; could even be them.

Don’t know the attendance, but even if it wasn’t sold out, nice venue to book, esp. considering Canada doesn’t even play Danny’s country music :) Adam is quite popular in Canada it appears, lol. Has Kris played there yet?

  27. another pic from Danny’s concert last night. [..] it seems that the attendance was less than spectacular :(

    http://twitpic.com/32fo4y

I’m not sure how attendance can be judged by photos taken when people are still going into their seats before a concert starts, lol. The concert was certainly not about to start. Danny has a full 5-person band, most of whom are nowhere to be seen in that pic although I can make out one or two checking out their instruments pre-show.

A couple of people I know were there, haven’t reported back yet but I expect Danny did well enough. It’s quite a pretty-looking venue, imagine both Danny and Adam enjoyed playing there.

One video surfacing from YT already from last night.

This article just sent that opinion back to the basement.

If you’re going to perform at a campaign event, OWN it. I don’t care what side it’s for – although I’d have more respect for supporting a blue side – if you’re performing, it’s going to be interpreted as support that candidate.

You don’t know what her political views really are. She performed at the event out of respect for the office of the Vice President. For all you know, she could be a Republican.

  29. The common denominator between the UK and the US show will be Simon, and he’s shown that he loves substance over quality, is more interested in what’s popular than in what’s good, and has questionable taste.

I’d agree with that point.. but US Idol isn’t/wasn’t a carbon copy the UK Pop Idol show.

  30. What a beautiful venue Danny played in last night for his first concert outside of the US….thanks for the picture relfanna:) I was curious about the type of venue Danny was playing there.

Are Country music concerts common in Canada? I saw the price on the tickets to this one….definitely higher price than the usual country music ticket price that I have bought.

I have seen Danny live, so one thing I would bet on is that everyone that was lucky enough to be there will leave a Danny fan if they weren’t already!

  31. I still see “Take One” at the Target near me. It is amazing to me that the album is still available for purchase. I wonder if we will ever get numbers on how that CD did?

The number I see floating around twitter is 50k butno one really has any actual links for it.

As much as I would like decent recordings of Citizen Vein material I hope its not that. Mainly because that would mean the they lost the rights to the material :(

  32. My daughter is watching a new Nickelodeon series, Monster High. They just played Allison Iraheta’s songs “Scars” and “Friday I’ll Be Over You”. Awesome!

  33. As much as I would like decent recordings of Citizen Vein material I hope its not that. Mainly because that would mean the they lost the rights to the material

I had the same thought. If the list that was originally leaked was legit anyway. You’d think those would have been the first tracks out if so.

  34. Indigo, I think LLWD peaked at number 41 in their pop chart there.

Oh, I meant did Kris play at that venue?

    T

he one who posted the pic does not even know who Danny was and she herself wondered what she was doing there and maybe the reason her seat was further back coz she got in for free

Lol, now why would you assume that? You forgot the second part of the tweet, sounds like she was looking forward to it:

American idol finalist… Danny Gokey… He sings country. Neva in my life did I think I’d be at a country concert… N not mind it lol

  35. Plenty of other people were tweeting that they were excited to see Danny, so to the degree you can rely on twitter-int, she was not the norm. Also, the time that she tweeted a photo is not necessarily when she took the photo. I’ve been to a number (lol) of Danny’s concerts. His band members come out to check things on stage anywhere up to an hour before the shows start, and sometimes return to do that more than once. It would be pretty odd if there were two of them doing that at show-time with full house lights on in the venue.

I’m looking forward to seeing more videos hopefully, and hearing from people who were there how it went.

It sounds as if Danny put on a very successful show, and I hope it was successful enough as far as attendance that he will continue to venture outside the US more. He has a lot of international fans who would love to see that :)

Since we’re interested in twitter comments from Danny’s concertgoers, some more tweets surfacing this morning:

Awesome show last night @dannygokey! Thanks for coming to our city and sharing your beautiful talent with us :) Happy Halloween!

your Vancouver show was amazing thankyou for the picture see you on the cruise love the girl with the blue eyes

Had an awesome at @DannyGokey ‘s show in Coquitlam! He sure can sang! Smile

And this one that I thought was pretty funny-sweet

Just met Danny Gokey after his show at the Red Robinson Theater. He is very sweet & very humble. I told him I loved him, how lame!

  36. How many AI rejects are we going to see leave the AI auditions and immediately signup for X-Factor? I wonder if that will be allowed? Simon C. would probably love to scoop up an AI reject and make them a star on X-Factor.

This is what I’m most intrigued about with X-Factor. Can an Andrew Garcia or Katie Stevens or hell a Vonzell Soloman or Anthony Federov try out for X-Factor? What would Simon do, would he encourage it, or not accept those contestants?

  37. My daughter is watching a new Nickelodeon series, Monster High. They just played Allison Iraheta’s songs “Scars” and “Friday I’ll Be Over You”. Awesome!

I was watching it with my 7 year old and I heard both songs too! I wasn’t expecting that. I think Allison needs to tap into this market. I understand they are going to make a live action movie of Montser High. I hope her peeps are lobbying to get her music as part of the soundtrack.

  38. Whatever the attendance at the show was, it’s still great for Danny to get the chance to play a solo show in Canada. I wouldn’t count on seeing a real review of it though — newspapers seem to review very few shows these days — I’ve yet to see one from the Lifehouse/Kris tour, and even Adam didn’t get reviewed by newspapers at every city he played. So it ould be a nice bonus if Danny’s show got reviewed.

I wish Kris would book some gigs in Canada. I don’t know how well he’d draw, but I have seen a lot of tweets and posts on various fan boards from fans of his who live in Canada, so I’m not quite sure why his management is ignoring that market. Even if he went as an opener for another band it would give him some exposure to more potential fans and maybe would help him get his music played on the radio more often there.

  39. Josh Gracin just sang the National Anthem before the NASCAR race at Talladega. Hadn’t seen him in a long time — he sounded really good!

  40. His album is the second best-selling of any country newcomer in 2010.

I hate to point this out, but we can’t compare what those from AI are doing in comparison to what those who didn’t have this huge platform are doing. All AI alums debut album numbers are inflated because they were on the show, and based on Danny’s songs not getting a lot of airplay we know that this is true for him too.

  41. Oh, I meant did Kris play at that venue?

Kris’s only concerts in Canada have been for the AI concerts.

IDK, it’s an unusual venue for either Danny or Kris to play. It and it’s sister theatre, the River Rock, tend to focus on comedians, tribute bands, revues and older acts (e.g. Chicago, David Cassidy and Twisted Sister). They are in suburban casinos which tend to have an older crowd.

Most of the newer bands trying to target a younger audience go to the downtown venues (or UBC). Although, AI can skew older so maybe that’s what the promoter was thinking (and Adam did sell-out both venues). Or perhaps there are more country fans in Coquitlam.

  42. Danny hasn’t received much promotion in Canada -at least in British Columbia. His CD isn’t in the local Walmart(Northern British Columbia) but apparently he did a song on the Global news Saturday morning show – that is a very good gig for him to get- I wish that I knew in advance so i could have seen it.

So for Danny to play at this theatre is a start to promotion in Canada. I’d love to hear how the show turned out.

  43. Even if he has the second best selling of any country newcomer in 2010 he still pales in comparison to Bucky Covington BOTH in album sales and singles chart. So I would say he is not the most successful male AI alum in the country genre.
Indigo, those shows you mentioned are all in Danny’s state so for it to do well is to be expected and I think those were not part of the supposed 36 tour you guys were talking about then. And why is he co-hosting a red carpet at AMA’s? If I am fan I would actually be woried, he is a singer not a host, it’s like he’s thinking that if having a singing career will not work out I’ll just be a host to at least have a career. Well that is nothing new as far as Danny’s concerned, he is known to compromise alot.

So for Danny to play at this theatre is a start to promotion in Canada. I’d love to hear how the show turned out.

That’s cool. I had seen yesterday some reports that he was on a B.C. news program, but didn’t know he was able to do a song. Hope video surfaces :)

Bucky was before my time on AI. Seems to me he has done pretty well though to establish himself and stay on the scene. Danny is just starting out, in a very different climate for the music industry and as a much less traditional country artist. Having the second-best selling album for a newcomer in his genre is pretty good to me. Danny and Bucky are two completely different types of artists, so I don’t find that comparison too interesting.

The WI dates would be part of Danny’s tour, why wouldn’t they be? They fit the description given by some of Danny’s band members quite well, as did the concert last night. It’s been a little ambiguous whether all the fairs/festivals, Opry, acoustic shows, etc. were part of what Danny originally meant for the 36 cities. May well have been, Danny tends to be more enthusiastic than precise in his language sometimes, lol.

Danny sings his heart out in concert night after night, he loves being on stage. But if he has a chance to do a (music-related) hosting gig, why in the universe should he turn that down? I guess Carrie better call her agent and say she doesn’t want to host the CMA Awards as it might jeopardize her singing career ;) Not to mention the dabbling in acting and the like.

  45. His album is the second best-selling of any country newcomer in 2010.

Nothing against Danny, but that is a bit of a fluke because there were not many breakout new country acts this year.

Plus, he released his album in March, and I think he will get passed by a few Country artists who released later in the year.

So kind of unfair to compare Danny to The Band Perry who just released their album October 12, 2010. But will most likely sell more than 200K and pass Danny.

ETA: I think it makes no sense to compare Danny to Bucky Covington because even Country album sales are down since 2007. And doing the AMA red carpet is great for exposure.

Just think that the timing of “best selling album of the year” makes no sense when it is only October and Q4 is the biggest sales period of the year.

Kellie Pickler was able to parlay hosting the red carpets to a respectable country career. Adam Lambert also did red carpet for some award show and I don’t believe he was contemplating a career change. It’s about getting face time and paying your dues.

Kellie is actually a really good example of this. She was widely despised across the internet for her “Dumb-As-A-Post” Idol shtick. Then, she did some red carpet duties for Leno and people started to finally see that she was genuinely funny (with more than a five second slot to say “calamari?”). That started to turn people’s opinions of her. By the time she worked the red carpet for a country award (can’t remember which one, there seems to be a lot of them), people were solidly in her camp. Couple that with a great album and fantastic interviews, and she’s now a country staple (she’s no Carrie, but she certainly does well enough).

    Lol.

I think that Danny could do fine as a television personality/host if ever wanted to do that. But I think he’s focused on having a music career, and just does the hosting stuff sometimes, because he likes to do it and it’s fun. And it fits his personality.

I am glad that he’s getting to be one of the hosts for the AMA’s red carpet. That was an unexpected, but pleasant surprise. Jennette McCurdy, who is also in Country music is doing it as well.

Both her and Danny did a nice job being hosts for the ACM orange carpet. Maybe someone saw them hosting that together and decided they wanted them for the AMA’s red carpet.

Plus the AMA’s probably wanted a variety of hosts to work the red carpets. Including hosts from the Country Music genre, (Danny &Jennette ), a host who used to be a pop star (Lance Bass) and an International pop singer, (Agnes Monica).

There’s nothing wrong with Danny co-hosting the AMA red carpet. It’s a music event and he’s serving as a commentator, it will get him some attention from music fans. Adam did the fashion thing for the Grammys with ET and it did nothing but help him later with ET. He’s had several exclusives with ET since including stories on his music video, his tour, his album…publicity like that is great.

All the idols have done some things with regard to these award shows that aren’t entirely music related. Kris announced the People’s Choice nominations. Adam announced the AMA nominations. What’s so bad about what Danny’s doing?

  49. I love that Danny will will co-hosting the red carpet. This is a real honour to do this and can only increase Danny’s name recognition.

  50. He is working hard, put out a decent album, and not doing anything that other Idol alums haven’t done before him. He looks almost certain to have a second album, and perhaps establish a decent touring career. You do not need to headline your own tour to be a successful Country artist — you can co-tour or even be featured act and do very well.

Rock and Pop are a whole different ballgame. Very hard to make money unless you can tour profitably as a headliner. There are exceptions, but not many. Rock and Pop artists with low recorded music sales and no headline tour possibilities, end up on Broadway, turning into songwriters or producers, or doing something else. And some, like Allison, just have to hope for another shot at a major label album.

  51. And why is he co-hosting a red carpet at AMA’s? This is a great opportunity for Danny for on camera visibility – as well as to network with other artists and industry people. The AMA’s usually generates a huge international audience.

For the record, Adam Lambert’s gig on the SAG red carpet earlier this year was to report on Fashion Patrol for ET. The SAG are movie awards – nothing to do with music.

Now I doubt Danny will be reporting on fashion for the AMA’s since they have on board as a host, Whitney Port, the aspiring fashion designer from MTV’s The Hills.

  52. is album is the second best-selling of any country newcomer in 2010.

TBP did very well with their album release. Whether they will sell ultimately as many albums as Easton Corbin and Danny, I don’t know. That may be difficult. It wouldn’t particularly bother me though if TBP passed Danny, I like them more than certain others of the other newcomers, and from anything I know, they like Danny and Danny likes them.

Danny and TBP just did a show together with Steel Magnolia a couple of weeks ago. It would bother me if he got passed by say, Trailer Choir, however. ;)

  53. For the record, Adam Lambert’s gig on the SAG red carpet earlier this year was to report on Fashion Patrol for ET. The SAG are movie awards – nothing to do with music.

Adam was ET’s Fashion correspondent on the Grammy 2010 red carpet — he attend the 2010 SAG awards and was named best dressed man, also best dressed man at 2009 AMAs.

    Adam at the Grammys http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIU-J7C6cQI

  54. I think it is fair/okay to say that Danny had the second best debut from a new country artist this year. Because he did. I don’t think that The Band Perry releasing their album towards the end of this year, and the possibility that they may outdo Danny, changes that.

Unless they manage to outsell Danny before the year is out. I don’t think they will do that, but I do think they might have steady sales for a while, and end up with decent album sales. It’s possible they may end up outselling Danny, though I don’t think it will be this year.

There is always going to be some artists that release albums at the beginning of the year and some that release towards the end of year. IMO whoever sells the most during any part of the year, sells the most.

(I also don’t think that Danny getting more help from his label than some other new artists got changes that either. The idols usually do get more promotion than other new artists).

From March to July of this year, Danny, Easton Corbin, Jerrod Neimann, and Jaron and The Long Road to Love all released albums.

Danny wasn’t the only new artist to release an album earlier this year. And those other three artists had songs that charted higher and sold more than Danny’s songs did. Easton debuted with less albums sold than Danny, (they released their albums on the same day), but ended up passing Danny in sales.

IMO even when considering different factors it’s okay/fair to say Danny did have the 2nd best country debut this year.

  55. For the record, Adam Lambert’s gig on the SAG red carpet earlier this year was to report on Fashion for ET. The SAG are movie awards – nothing to do with music.

nvm Q3 beat me to it

    Re: the Take Two album
haha did anyone see the “Tags Customers Associate with This Product”

    not adam lambert approved
    bogus
    not authentic
    ripoff
    demos
    bottom feeders
    mercenary
    inauthentic

hehe my personal favorite is bottom feeders

ITA — I like a number of new country acts, include TBP, and I do not think that who sells the most album units matters at all. Danny has sold enough to get another album. He got good reviews. And his career seems to be headed up. I just like rational accomplishments. And some of the best claims are silly…..

Adam Lambert has the #1 selling major label debut by an openly gay Artist in the US of all time! Of course, he could have sold 1 CD and gotten that title! ;)

Plus, I have been impressed with Danny’s focus and hard work. No one makes it if they expect to have things handed to them. Some artists may act like slackers but longevity required a lot of hard work.

ETA: Smeggs — I agree with the best being “bottomfeeders”!!!

  57. The WI dates would be part of Danny’s tour, why wouldn’t they be?

Well, of course they are! They are all approx. 1200k venues; within one hour of each other, so even if its his home state, I think if he can get good crowds at all of those, it’s pretty good. And he’s played numerous times in Milwaukee/Madison- this is up North. A fan, concert revenue is just that; no matter where it comes from!

Nothing against Danny, but that is a bit of a fluke because there were not many breakout new country acts this year.

Agreed that others could certainly pass him; we’ll see. But are there really that many new break out artists any given year in country?? You already have Easton Corbin (who is the #1 debut seller, released same day Danny did; has sold about 50k more with two #1 hits. He is quite a big breakthrough- check out all his award noms coming up), TBP already released an EP, I don’t know their figures but they peaked at #4 on BB 200. Steel Magnolia is doing well, but keeps pushing back their album.
So yeah, who knows if they figure will stand. But he debuted at 65k in March (not Christmas season). Yeah its Idol fans, but lol, what else do Idols have coming off the show? And as a fan, I’m happy about the additional 124k he has sold in the past 7 months. I don’t think those are all Idol fans. He lost a portion of Idol fans-many are allergic to country

And why is he co-hosting a red carpet at AMA’s? If I am fan I would actually be woried, he is a singer not a host

Lol. Well, Danny fans are pretty thrilled about his AMA gig. Idols can use all the PR they can get and this is a pretty good one.
I also think it speaks well of his position in the industry that they would choose him. As others pointed out, I doubt Carrie or Kellie fans bemoaned their hosting opportunities ;)

  58. Adam was ET’s Fashion correspondent on the Grammy 2010 red carpet

That even makes a stronger argument in Danny’s favor. Because Adam Lambert is also a singer, not a host. And I don’t recall him performing at the Grammy’s this year. And he obviously had no problem reporting on Fashion for the show. I doubt he felt he was compromising himself. My original point – great for Danny and great for Adam for getting similar gigs.

The competition for Season 8 is long over.

  59. Ouch. Long trip home for Danny (presumably) and band. Hope they got to look around in Vancouver at least a little. It often seems these folks go to different cities and don’t see much of anything except what’s outside the bus window and backstage at the venues.

    Today, October 31, 2010, 3 hours ago
bfraley: 3:30am wake up call- Vancouver to Seattle / Seattle to Denver / Denver to Nashville. Best Halloween ever! :-/

  60. TBP already released an EP, I don’t know their figures but they peaked at #4 on BB 200.

TBP EP was released in April 2010, their album in October 2010. Both this year. The 5-track EP was digital and I believe it peaked at #32 on Billboard Country Albums — #4 Heatseakers Chart. The album is their first CD and was #2 on Country albums and #4 on Billboard. Tracking to sell more than 200K. Sold 53k week 1.

Because there are no rock or pop singers that are writing, producing, and continuing to make music?

I think it is fair/okay to say that Danny had the second best debut from a new country artist this year

We’ll have to agree to disagree on this. The 300K that Kris sold is good for a new artist, but considering that it is inflated because of his participation on AI, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he has found an audience, the same is true for Danny, Adam, and all of the other debut albums by idols (with the exception of Carrie and Chris, who released a series of hit songs, and whose albums continued to be purchased as their songs continued to get exposure). If Danny’s numbers paralleled what his songs were doing and lined up with their AI, then that would be a different story.

  62. I never saw the original announcement about Danny working the red carpet at the AMAs. Which channel will he be working for?

IMO it’s a nice gig and certainly doesn’t do Danny any harm, but I doubt it would have much effect on his actual music career. To be honest, I can’t think of a time I’ve seen someone host a red carpet event and thought to myself that I must go out and get their album or go to their show/movie/whatever. But then again, I’m not someone who really cares about the red carpet stuff — I wouldn’t remember who the hosts even are most of the time. But maybe other people feel differently.

  63. Like with most new artists, it’s the 2nd album that will tell the tale on whether Danny, Adam, Kris,David Cook, etc. have managed to build a true fanbase for themselves. The poor sales for Archie’s album don’t make me real optimistic right at the moment, though I try to hope for the best. I do think all these guys will manage to stick around and put out music for the next several years — the question is whether they will do so backed by major labels and get to do a big tour and see their songs get a lot of radio play, or whether they will be on an smaller label and have to take more of a DIY approach in terms of touring and won’t get much exposure on radio.

  64. girlygirl, it’s a digital pre-show on ABC.com and some other outlets, I think. I think it’s been good for Danny, the AMA peeps have been putting out a lot of teaser videos and promo that he normally doesn’t get out of Nashville. And the various participating personalities have been having a lot of fun tweeting to and about each other, crossing their fanbases.

Will it make people go by his album, maybe not, but I think it’s a good thing anytime these folks can get their face and name out there in a positive setting.

It will be interesting with the second albums. David A’s lack of much luck so far has been rather daunting. I guess I hope that perhaps he and Allison share some similar issues with a young-ish fanbase and themselves being an in-between age for the type of music they are best suited to do. Which may not be as much an issue for people like David Cook or any of the AI8 top 3 guys on a second album. Hoping so, anyway. I hope Danny will at least see steady luck with radio play in the range where he has been, which isn’t huge big radio hits but enough to keep his name out there. He is really good on tour, and I think that will be a mainstay for him if he can keep it going with touring on his own and connecting up to tour with other country acts and the various festival formats. And any opportunities to perform live on mainstream national television are usually good for Danny. Hope they get more of those than we saw this year.

  65. the same is true for Danny, Adam, and all of the other debut albums by idols (with the exception of Carrie and Chris, who released a series of hit songs, and whose albums continued to be purchased as their songs continued to get exposure).

I agree with you for the most part, but Adam’s album is still in the top 200 almost a full year after release. Those can’t be all Idol fans still purchasing a full season later. I think when an Idol album disappears from the charts a few months after release, your argument makes more sense. I’m not saying that Adam has reached some huge outside idol fanbase, but he has continued to sell. His international fanbase is increasing too. Aria Official, the Australian chart official twitter, just tweeted that Adam’s FYE has climbed into the Top 5 of their album charts after 27 weeks of release. A new peak for an album that has already gone gold there. Pretty cool.

  66. I agree with you for the most part, but Adam’s album is still in the top 200 almost a full year after release. Those can’t be all Idol fans still purchasing a full season later

This is true, but if I left Adam out, I would have had to leave Jordin out too. I think based on the few albums that she sold initially, remember, she used to be the lowest seller by an AI winner ever (LOL), that we could have assumed that the albums that she sold during the year after her win were do to those outside of the bubble, and her numbers did correspond to how well her singles were doing. But, none of this carried over to her second album, so it’s too soon to tell if anyone from season 8 or David Cook managed to do what Carrie and Daughtry did.

  67. X Factor UK judge Cheryl Cole has #1 single in the UK this week.
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/chart/singles

Cheryl Cole wins fastest selling No. 1 of 2010

Cheryl Cole has notched up her second UK number one and the fastest selling non-charity single of 2010 with new track ‘Promise This’.

The X Factor judge’s much-discussed performance on the show last Sunday saw her latest release sell over 157,000 copies this week, just pipping Barbadian singer Rihanna’s comeback track ‘Only Girl (In The World)’ to the top spot.

The lead song from the ‘Umbrella’ hitmaker’s upcoming album Loud achieved first week sales of 126,000, giving Rihanna her 14th UK top ten hit and the second fastest-selling single of the year so far.

  68. Here is Danny featured briefly in the road to CMA’s tv special: Carrie is featured talking a bit in these first two parts as well:

Appears that was taped during CMA Fest in the spring. Nice that they chose Danny for the CMA promo special, he is the only newcomer who appears.

  69. it doesn’t necessarily mean that he has found an audience, the same is true for Danny, Adam, and all of the other debut albums by idols (with the exception of Carrie and Chris, who released a series of hit songs, and whose albums continued to be purchased as their songs continued to get exposure).

True, but I don’t think anyone is using it as that indication; just that he has done well. And obviously sales are important, since they make back $$ on investment for the label, help secure that second album. That is really the primary goal here; it is difficult to be a superstar right off AI these days; even Adam hasn’t gotten there with his huge push from RCA and the media. But his concert and album sales and international popularity help secure him the chance to continue on.

I think it is something to be happy about that Danny has the second highest country debut sales for the year, especially since it is in a genre that many said WTF? when he announced his decison; vs. underselling expectations. As Danny would say in Song #2 off the album “Like That’s A Bad Thing….”

IMO it’s a nice gig and certainly doesn’t do Danny any harm, but I doubt it would have much effect on his actual music career.

Yes, I doubt people will run out to buy his album, but since Danny has had little mainstream PR beyond the one AI appearance, his fans are happy about it. And contacts, networking is always great in the music business :) He gained 2k Twitter followers within a week, many Indonesian since he and Agnes Monica seem to have hit it off, lol.

  70. This is WAY off the topics currently being discussed, but my daughters are watching this cartoon on Nickelodeon called Monster High: New Ghoul at School. They played Allison Iraheta’s “Scars” and now “Friday I’ll Be Over You”! It’s actually really cute. Too bad Jive dropped her; this little cartoon feature is perfect for her demographic.

  71. Yes, I doubt people will run out to buy his album, but since Danny has had little mainstream PR beyond the one AI appearance, his fans are happy about it. And contacts, networking is always great in the music business :)

People lamented about Adam doing the fashion gig for Entertainment Tonight too and slammed him for it. Yet later, when Entertainment Tonight was doing promo pieces on the album, the videos and the tour, people were lamenting the fact that their idol didn’t get that kind of treatment. It’s all in the networking and Danny’s gig at the AMAs for ABC.com could lead to some great music-related PR from them in the future.

I agree, in the sense that it really is impossible to read the tea leaves for any Idol unless they had a huge breakout album the first time around. I mean, I think you CAN argue that Jordin sold well past Idol fans… its not like she had a huge Idol fanbase to start with, she kept selling singles and albums simply because she kept having hits. On the other hand, you could argue the Pickler did not have a track record in Country that matched Jordin’s in pop, but she managed to do decently with her second record (some of that due to one Taylor Swift, certainly, but not all). So you just never know. I would argue someone like Adam has probably sold past Idol fans if he’s on the charts this long (ditto Cook) and that Archie stayed quite visible in the teen girl market, but in the end you just don’t know until you know if you reached enough people and if those you did reach were inspired enough to be really into you, or to stay into you over time. There really is no way to tell IMO until that second record drops.

  73. Because there are no rock or pop singers that are writing, producing, and continuing to make music?

My post must not have been clear — because that is what I wrote. A country artist can make a leaving performing as a feature artist, this option is not available to most rock-pop performers. There is no equivalent to the Country tours/venues for rock-pop artists. So if a rock-pop artist have low sales and cannot headline a tour, they have to shift to Broadway/musical theater, become songwriters or producers, or find some other way to make money.

But many Country artist can make a good living touring as mid-level featured performers, plus play Nashville, Branson, etc. Danny can move up to be a featured artist and do fine. Pop-Rock equivalent doesn’t exist.

I think that Kelly has an audience outside of Idol and she still have the highest worldwide sales of singles and albums.

And IMO Adam clearly is building an audience outside of Idol. Both internationally and in the US. FYE continues to sell in the US, Canada and other countries. Adam has songs on the radio in over 50 countries. He concerts continue to sell out. He has moved beyond Idol. Sony/RCA really doesn’t care about units sold — they care about profits generated.

Adam and Danny are or will be profitable investments for Sony. They really do not care how many units an artist sells — they care about Sony revenue generated and profits. Adam had high expenses but has sold at least 1.2 million albums at a high average wholesale price worldwide, has lots of revenue streams and recouped the tour support he got from Sony. Danny has low expenses and reasonable sales.

  74. Aw, cute. I “know” veronicadgfan from Twitter. I told her she was posted here :)

  75. His CD isn’t in the local Walmart(Northern British Columbia) but apparently he did a song on the Global news Saturday morning show – that is a very good gig for him to get- I wish that I knew in advance so i could have seen it.

Canuck, do you know what he sang? Was it I Will Not Say Goodbye or his new, unheard yet Christmas song? Or something else, lol.

Actually they are both tracking about the same:

    Danny – 1st week 65,000
    2nd week 23,000
    3rd week 14,000

    TBP – 1st week 54,000
    2nd week 25,000
3rd week 19,000 (HDD has them at 18-20k so I split the difference)

As this is not the numbers thread, please excuse this MJ but I needed then for my point. :)

As for Danny’s position as an opener for Sugarland it was/is a good gig. For most of the Country artist that is where they stay. A good example of this is Kellie Pickler, she is a secound opener, and at the rescent RF tour Chris Young was the 1st opener. Daruis Rucker was the opener for RF on their last tour and the opener for Brad Paisley (who had 5-7 acts that appeared at each stop) this time. Billy Currington for Carrie Underwood , the list goes on an on and them getting Danny up there for his 5 songs did a lot of good for him in the way of name recognition.

  77. Canuck, do you know what he sang? Was it I Will Not Say Goodbye or his new, unheard yet Christmas song? Or something else, lol.

From the tweets of people who said they got all choked up seeing it, have to bet it was IWNSG ;)

  78. I think that Kelly has an audience outside of Idol and she still have the highest worldwide sales of singles and albums.

The topic was based on the performance of the debut albums.

He is working hard, put out a decent album, and not doing anything that other Idol alums haven’t done before him. He looks almost certain to have a second album, and perhaps establish a decent touring career. You do not need to headline your own tour to be a successful Country artist — you can co-tour or even be featured act and do very well.

Rock and Pop artists with low recorded music sales and no headline tour possibilities, end up on Broadway, turning into songwriters or producers, or doing something else. And some, like Allison, just have to hope for another shot at a major label album.

Considering that the label usually doesn’t get a cut of what an artist makes from touring, what does this have to do with whether or not someone keeps their contract?

  79. Canuck, do you know what he sang? Was it I Will Not Say Goodbye or his new, unheard yet Christmas song? Or something else, lol.

I went to GlobalTVNews British Columbia and went to the Saturday/Sunday morning show. It just says “a performance by Danny Gokey” on the show schedule.

Now I am not a member of Facebook or Twitter-maybe someone could go to the network and find out there.

  81. Considering that the label usually doesn’t get a cut of what an artist makes from touring, what does this have to do with whether or not someone keeps their contract?

I don’t totally understand how the finances work but I have heard people in Danny’s team quoted as saying that RCA is very happy with how well Danny is doing on tour. (Presumably meaning that in context of how other new / mid-tier country acts do.)

Whether they get a slice somehow, don’t know but it has to have indirect benefits for the label in selling albums and keeping their artists’ name recognition up, I would think. In Danny’s case, he regularly sells CDs along with the other merch at his shows, and there’s some evidence that his iTunes ranking can bump up after a larger show.

  82. Considering that the label usually doesn’t get a cut of what an artist makes from touring, what does this have to do with whether or not someone keeps their contract?

I never mentioned anything about contracts being tied to touring success — and don’t think there is any contract question for Danny — his album should make money and he should get a follow-up.

Just tried to make a simple point — Danny can make a decent living touring if he moved up to be a featured artist and does not need to be a headliner (although that is certainly would be nice.) That is an option Country artists have that is not generally available to rock or pop artists.

19R artists do not have a 360 degree contract with Sony, but most new artists do.

But Sony has provided touring support to all of the AI8 signed artists and that is recoupable against the album project. And generally — a successful tour = album sales.

ETA: My point is still not clear — so trying one more time — a musician can make money a lot of ways: as a recording artist, touring profitably, as a songwriter, as a producer, being part of a show in Broadway, Vegas, Branson, and so on. Country artists do not need to headline to tour and make money — that gives Danny one more action then he would have if he was a rock or pop artist — he can tour as a featured performer. Some artists have few options — like Allison — because she has been dropped by Jive and will not get any tour support from her label, and I do not expect to see her on Broadway or making a living writing songs or as a producer — so she has to be hoping that another label signs her.

And even the Sony/19R artist get touring support from their labels.

I bet that the parents / moms won’t just leave their children on the curb to get the candies.
Those 2 are too funny, and the way they posed for the pictures too.

  86. Reminder:

I should have peeked into this thread a little earlier:

    1. Please don’t question the motives of your fellow posters, critcize or label them. If you are a lurker posting here for the first time, it’s ESSENTIAL that you read my guidelines: http://mjsbigblog.com/idol-appearances/guidelines.

    2. The rehashing of past seasons? Please…no.

  87. I think it was a great idea for Danny’s management to get him booked for concerts in Canada. Country music is popular there and this is a great chance to for Danny to expand beyond our borders. Canadians taste in music is a lot like ours and have proven to be a great market for Idols singers. If I remember correctly, Carrie, Daughtry and Adam have all done several concerts there in the past year and their music has sold very well there. JIVE could have done a better job promoting both Kris and Allison’s music in Canada and maybe booked some appearances and gigs there.

  88. LOL — Kris’ costume is a better disguise than I thought

  89. LOL, my son wore almost the exact same costume as Kris Allen for Trick or Treat when he was 10! Ah, fond memories.

  90. I laughed out loud at the pic of Kris dressed as Super Mario. So funny that the neighbor kid didn’t know Mario was Kris OR that he was asking his Mom where his parents live.

Katy looks adorably dorky. Who or what is she supposed to be?

ETA: Just saw the pic of Cale with Kris. Awesome! LOL

  91. A fan who saw Danny in concert for the first time just reported in about Danny’s Canada concert last night:

The show was fantastic and I think it was a really good crowd. We thought it was about 80% full, and people responded really well to him. Danny’s voice sounded beautiful. It went by so fast! I loved being able to see and hear him sing live, he is just amazing.

Capacity of Red Robison is 1074 so I think a showing of 700-800 people is pretty nice for Danny’s first Canadian show :)

  92. I’m a Simon Cowell fan. But he would
probably be mean to me. Hee! He would be mean to me, no doubt. lol…

P.S. What does this word mean?? “deter-mined” ??

  93. omg… There were so many Super Mario’s at my kid’s school. Bravo Kris! Very Funny! :) What a great sport!! Hmmm…. wonder what Adam was. Probably nothing like Mr. Mario. My mind is just racing with possibilities.

I am totally kidding. Happy Halloween!

  94. Iluai
Adam said in a recent interview he was going to dress up as a Victorian era vampire (lol Adam sure does love being a vampire)

  95. Capacity of Red Robison is 1074 so I think a showing of 700-800 people is pretty nice for Danny’s first Canadian show :)

That does seem pretty nice. 80% of 1074 could be up to 859 though, lol :) (math geek, haha)

  96. I just had to log in to say my favorite part of headlines today are the Halloween costumes. I officially proclaim Tigger a superhero!! Yay Walkersox family!!

    However nothing can top this:

    Kris Allen
    Look who I found! @calevis24 http://plixi.com/p/54265960

    LOLOLOLOLOLO!!
Love Katy adorable costume too. :D
And the little boy looking for Kris Allen’s parent’s house is priceless. You can’t write this stuff!

New costume challenge for next year….a Mario brother’s vampire. Hee! ;) Night all!

  97. Glad that Danny had a nice turnout in BC. Red Robinson concerts usually get reviewed — hope this one is. He got a couple nice pre-concert interviews/previews. But this one from The Provence was a bit to nice….

Since then, he finished third on American Idol (his rival was Adam Lambert) has created a good name for himself as a country singer, and established Sophia’s Heart Foundation. His album, My Best Days, was the highest debut on the Billboard country chart in 18 years. The first single, “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me” registered more digital downloads than any male country singer.

How could his album be the highest debut on the Country Chart in 18 years? I think it should be — “My Best Days is the best debut for a male country solo artist since Billy Ray Cyrus’ Some Gave All album debuted with 90,000 copies in June 1992.”

And I think the digital sales record is for the album — “My Best Days sold 19,000 digital albums its first week, giving it the highest first week digital album sales ever for a new Country artist.”

There are photos circulating of Adam in this year’s Gothic Victorian vampire costume with his new red contact lenses. As promised, not glitter this year. Add overall more frightening!

those are estimates from a die-hard danny fan, how unbias, lol.

Maybe, but if she was going to stretch (which I don’t believe she did) why wounldnt she say 90-95%?

  99. I’m not sure why it should be beyond belief that Danny had a nice turnout for his show in Canada, whatever the actual number may have been. He typically does get pretty respectable attendance and crowd response, quite good compared to other new country acts and not a few mid-tier established acts. That’s one reason why, when Danny appears jointly with other country newcomers, he has in every case been the headlining act or had higher billing to my knowledge. He’s also worked very hard with his band to put together a fun, exciting full-length show, and spent a lot of effort trying to learn how to be an effective on-stage entertainer.

AI helped with that, but coming out of a church music background Danny really didn’t have that experience at all pre-AI. He’s still got more he can learn, of course, but he’s put more effort into that side of things than I’ve seen with some new and not-so-new acts who haven’t moved much beyond a stand-in-one-spot-on-the-stage-with-acoustic-guitar performance style.

  100. That does seem pretty nice. 80% of 1074 could be up to 859 though, lol :) (math geek, haha)

I downgraded my calculations just because someone might say they overestimated, so I bumped it down 10% ;)

But knowing this person who is an MBA, and quite precise, I highly doubt there was overestimating going on.

He’s certainly had that large of turnouts, and larger so not sure why Canada is a stretch, even though his music isn’t played there. AI is pretty popular up there.

You are correct. It is not the first time I’ve seen them drop the “male” part and also I think the digital sales gets confusing because the single has a similar name to the album, so interviewers confuse them.

These are only minor errors in what I see published nowadays, especially on the internet. I guess Editors are victims of cutbacks :(
