Elton John: ‘Songwriters today are pretty awful’

LONDON — British singer Elton John described today’s songwriters as “pretty awful, ” pop music as uninspiring and reality television talent shows like “American Idol” as boring in an interview published on Tuesday.

“I’m not a fan of talent shows. I probably wouldn’t have lasted if I’d gone on one. I was asked to judge ‘American Idol.’ I couldn’t do it because I won’t slag anyone off.

“Also I don’t want to be on television. It’s become boring, arse-paralysingly brain crippling.”

Is it true you’re working on an album with Diane Warren, Chris Rojas and Evan Bogart?

I’ve been working on my album every day … since the Idol tour wrapped up. On tour there are some real time constraints. But I’m co-writing song and I’ve got the chance to work with some really talented people. People know me from Idol singing cover songs. This album is going to be who I am as a person and an artist. I want to be an inspiration to people and tell a story.

Celebs, come on down! You’re the next quiz-show contestants

Taylor Hicks routinely performed live on TV’s top-rated American Idol to win the crown in 2006. Yet the recording artist and concert headliner’s Oct. 12 appearance on Lyrics “was a nerve-racking experience, ” he says.

“On a scale of 1 to 10, this was an 11, ” says Hicks, who won $5, 000 for VH1’s Save the Music campaign. “Even though singing each week on Idol is also about remembering the lyrics, ultimately, on a game show, you’re raising money for charity.”

“If I hear about something and if I think it sounds like fun and it sounds interesting, then I’m up for it, ” Underwood said in a recent phone interview from Los Angeles, where she was in rehearsals for one of those new experiences: playing a sold-out show at the famed Hollywood Bowl.

EXCLUSIVE: Glee creator Ryan Murphy just finished an episode of his hit show that is devoted to the camp classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show. By the time it airs October 26, Murphy might be in a deal to direct the feature film remake. I’m told that he’s being courted by Fox 2000 to direct a remake of the 1975 musical, which has grossed north of $100 million and is considered the longest running theatrical release in film history because it still packs the faithful into midnight shows. The project is taking shape at Fox 2000, with Peter Chernin producing along with Lou Adler.

Lea, on being told she needed a nose job: “I was one of the only girls in my high school that didn’t get one. And if anybody needed it, I probably did. But my mom always told me, growing up, ‘Barbra Streisand didn’t get a nose job. You’re not getting a nose job.’ And I didn’t. F— those people.
