American Idol’ Lee DeWyze’s first single, ‘Sweet Serendipity’

Last week, we previewed four new songs for you from Lee DeWyze’s post-”American Idol” debut, “Live it Up, ” including the title track, which was tagged as the first single.

Well, these things can always change. Yesterday we got the call from DeWyze’s rep that instead of “Live It Up, ” the new single would be a tune called “Sweet Serendipity, ”and it would debut on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show on Wednesday morning. Even without hearing it, we were happy to hear the news since, as we wrote, we weren’t sure that “Live It Up” was the right call. It turns out “Sweet Serendipity” is a much stronger choice.

Lee DeWyze Thanks His Lucky Stars On His Debut Single “Sweet Serendipity”

Oh boy, is “Sweet Serendipity” sweet — the positive, inoffensive feel good tune is the definition of playing it safe. We understand why 19 Recordings would pick the most fool-proof track to lead off with, but we just hope Lee’s next few singles have a bit more bite to them — after all, this is the guy who bared his soul in “The Boxer” and was ballsy enough to add a bagpipe player to his “Hey Jude” performance. It’s natural for us to expect a little more from him.

Lee DeWyze’s Debut Single Is Changed At Last Minute…Why?

But honestly, from what I heard last week when I went to 19 Entertainment to hear some of Lee’s finished songs, “Sweet Serendipity” and “Live It Up” are quite similiar in vibe: Easy-breezy and cheerful (perhaps an attempt to improve Lee’s “Idol” image of being serious, quiet, and somewhat lacking in superstar personality), with a distinctly Mrazzy influence. So if anyone–the label, management, radio gatekeepers, Lee himself–had doubts or concerns about “Live It Up, ” I’m not sure why they went with such a soundalike track. I personally prefer “Live It Up” and think RCA should have just well enough alone, or maybe they could have gone with something a little darker and deeper, with that supposed Sufjan Stevens influence Lee is always enthusiastically mentioning in interviews.

Lee DeWyze debuts ‘Sweet Serendipity’: What do you think?

There’s nothing wrong with “Sweet Serendipity, ” the bouncy debut single from American Idol season 9 champ Lee DeWyze. Rhythmically, it skips along like a smooth stone across a placid pond. Melodically, it could serve as the baby greens on a satisfactory lite-rock sandwich. But at the risk of overtaxing those ridiculous/disparate similes, it’s hard to imagine “Sweet Serendipity” creating a lot of waves, or becoming anybody’s favorite new flavor at radio. It’s a vaguely inspirational, vaguely catchy affair, tailor made for the middle third of a Katherine Heigl or Kate Hudson rom-com trailer. You know, the part where they show a couple of sun-drenched urban vistas and quick-cut shots of our working-girl heroine learning to let loose, be free, and put a little love in her heart. Which isn’t the worst thing in the world, really. And though the song itself is a little generic, Lee’s gruff growl of a voice manages to not get sandpapered into submission by the major-label production; 15 seconds in, you know exactly who’s singing it. A couple other thoughts:

  1. Why are Siobhan and I not married yet? And why did Lee DeWyze’s first single change? Why am I so entertained that Siobhan has a brother named Joseph?

I felt so stupid wondering why Derek Hough and Ryan Seacrest had an article saying they fit like family, I wondered how they met :P.

  2. I love Lyndsay Parker but what is she smoking? She wanted to Lee to do something “Darker and deeper” for his first single as a new artist? Seriously????

Maybe the answer to her question can be found in the review at HitFix:

I was just going to post asking about this, this evening.. but then I though when one of the fans finds out, I’m sure we’ll hear about it. Yeah for Kris.

  7. I’m glad that AWM was released ot raido. I hope it will be a hit :D.

  8. Oh… released to radio? Reminds me a lot of Elevator’s situation. It was released to radio. No adds date, nothing whatsoever, but it was released to radio. And then radio didn’t play it.
Jive’s beeing weird. Maybe this one will get more from Jive than Elevator did though, but it seems like the situation might be the same. Good luck with that.

  9. Kris, your tweet seems eerily familiar… oh wait.

    Good luck with that.

  10. “Released to radio” is not of goodness. Sads as a fan. But I hope it does well. sigh.

I do wish AWM had been the last single they had actively pushed for Kris, not TT. What an effin’ waste.

  11. Releasing to radio is the first step. It is in no way a bad thing or an indication of lack of support.

  12. EDITED:

Kris, has a current presence on radio — LLWD, TT and Heartless are all still being spun. So station PDs may be much more interested in playing this than they seem to be about Elevator.

Will have to wait and see — I’m just glad they are releasing it in time for his tour

  13. I was all excited !! then I see released to radio doesn’t mean Jive is pushing an add date. Oh well, still excited. It’s fun song. Go Kris. And at least he’s pushing it. I hope he does as much of his own promo as he can make himself do. And yay for the upcoming tour!

  14. But Kris’s fans may be more persistent in contacting radio stations

One thing Archie fans lack is persistence, obviously. With all due respect, and I’m not even a fan of any of the guys, Kris fanbase has nothing on Archie’s when it comes to these things.

I don’t think it’s about the fans or the presence on radio but more Jive not really showing much interest in pushing these songs. When all you have is the artist talking about it and nothing from the label, when you don’t see an adds date and you only read “it’s been released to radio”, yeah, something’s not so right.
But who knows? It could do well. Maybe there will be an adds date. It’s just after what happened with Archie, nothing’s a surprise anymore.

  15. But Kris’s fans may be more persistent in contacting radio stations

Kris also has a little advantage that he is about to go out on tour where he can promote his single himself and will probably have some radio stops along the way.

  16. Oh… released to radio? Reminds me a lot of Elevator’s situation. It was released to radio. No adds date, nothing whatsoever, but it was released to radio. And then radio didn’t play it.

David’s SBL was released to radio and had an add date, but radio didn’t play that either. We don’t know if it will ever have an add date, but even if it does that doesn’t tell us what type of promotion Jive will give it.

But Kris’s fans may be more persistent in contacting radio stations

I think the advantage will be LLWD, but we’ll have to see if The Truth will be a disadvantage.

    “Released to radio”

How is this not good? The song has to be digitally released to radio before they can start playing it.

  17. Well, you can call the stations all you want, but if the label arent pushing it to the stations, well then, they arent gonna play it no matter how much its requested and how much they like them.

  18. According to my twitter feed, #AlrightwithMe is trending in NY, L.A. and Sydney, Australia

  19. Releasing to radio is the first step. It is in no way a bad thing or an indication of lack of support.

Exactly, releasing the song to radio comes before the adds date, and having an adds date does not equal promotion.

I’m not going to argue about who has the more persistent fans. I don’t follow Archie’s fanbase to know whether they contact the label or call radio stations consistently on his behalf. That’s why I said “may” not “do”. I only know that Kris fans are very persistent about this stuff.

I think the sales total for LLWD during its first three days of being released, as well as the first week total for The Truth shows that Kris’ hardcore base isn’t that big, so it’s going to take more than just the efforts of hardcore fans to get radio stations to take notice of AWM. I won’t even go into the sad number of views for TT video, even though those persistent fans kept pestering Jive and everyone else about news concerning the video.

  20. Well, you can call the stations all you want, but if the label arent pushing it to the stations, well then, they arent gonna play it no matter how much its requested and how much they like them.

Requesting does serve a purpose, PDs keep track of the requests, but the requests really don’t directly translate to stations playing the song.

  21. I really don’t understand this… what’s wrong with AWM being released to radio and no add dates? What is the significance of an add date? Isn’t being played on radio a good thing since people will listen to it?

  22. jonina12

stations aren’t likely to spin any song much unless they officially add it to their playlist. if a song can’t get statios to “add” it, it usually doesn’t move up the charts, it usually won’t sell well, and it will quickly disappear from sight

  23. sr4mjc:

Jim should never stop singing Glee recaps. Freaking hilarious.

OMG Jim is freaking awesome…. *\o/* I approve cuz you know thats what matters ;)

  24. We found out that The Truth had been released to radio before we learned about the add dates. And nobody can say that Jive didn’t promote that song. Kris had a lot of radio sponsored shows and in studio interviews at both HAC and Pop stations to help promote The Truth.

    jonina12

girlygirl, I think the “concern” is more about whether or not Jive will promote the song.

  25. This article is a must read. Hans Ebert wrote very deep and very interesting review of Adam’s concert in Hong Kong and he has expanded many of his thoughts about Adam here. His vision and observations regarding Adam are truly mind blowing. Like his review, I had to read it a couple of times to take it all in. His writing style is different but very effective at keeping you intrigued.

    http://hansebert.wordpress.com/2010/10/13/is-adam-lambert-the-edward-scissorhands-of-music/

  26. Elliegrll

Kris was promoting his tour and his album more so than The Truth at all those radio station gigs. I can’t think of any in-studio radio gig he did where he only performed The Truth — he usually played 4 songs — and AWM was often one of the 4 (along with LLWD, MITM and TT). The most visible promotion TT got was the music video — and for whatever reason, that was pulled from VH1 even when it was in the Top 10 on the countdown.

Who knows whether Jive will do a better job of promoting AWM. We will have to wait and see.

  27. I’m certainly worried about how much Jive will be pushing AWM.. esp. since Allison’s & Achie’s singles had all gone nowhere and TT didn’t do great either. Even though TT is certainly their own mistake since we all know that Kris wanted to release AWM instead of TT as the second single.. but pretty sure they won’t admit it’s their mistake and likely blame it on the artist instead.. Sigh..

  28. Thank you girlygirl for answering my questions. And Elliegrll, I agree with the concern. Jive seems not too keen in promoting Kris. I always feel disheartened everytime I read comments on how Kris being the forgotten Idol winner while Adam is getting all the attention and praises. Don’t get me wrong, Adam is a remarkable singer (just not my taste) but I feel he is more on the media’s attention because of his gayness and personality lately than his music. Not that I want to ruffle some feathers though, but that’s how media and marketing are into this days. Look at Jive they are promoting Chris Brown for Pete’s sake even he’s a girl beater.

Also sometimes I feel Lee is getting more attention on the blogs today.

    Sorry for the rambling.

  29. girlygirl, of course he performed other songs, but I think it’s safe to say that one of the reasons why Jive set up those performances was because they hoped that stations would play The Truth. I think they did a good job of promoting that song, which is probably the main reason, along with the success of LLWD, why some HAC stations gave it a shot. The song failed because it wasn’t radio friendly, not because of lack of promotion.

  30. I won’t even go into the sad number of views for TT video, even though those persistent fans kept pestering Jive and everyone else about news concerning the video.

I’ve seen this mentioned before, and don’t understand the significance. I purchased the video, so I don’t know how anyone would know how many times I watched it.

I think that AWM has a huge advantage over Elevator, in that it is a really good song. Shouldn’t that help?

    Darn block quote fail again…
Can someone please explain again how to do the block quotes?

  31. I’ve seen this mentioned before, and don’t understand the significance. I purchased the video, so I don’t know how anyone would know how many times I watched it.

I’m commenting way too much tonight, this isn’t good.

My comment wasn’t about how often one person would watch the video, it’s more about there not being a demand from a significant amount of people who wanted to see the video. Actually, it was more about AWM needing more than just the backing of the hardcore fans to be successful.

  32. Hope07, first click on the b-quote, then paste the text you want to quote, then click on the /b-quote to close the quote.

    I hope this helps.

  34. Thanks justapixy, and zzatrms.

Elliegrll, I see what you’re saying, but if the fans purchased the video, they had no need to watch on-line. Jive really, really messed up the timing for the video, as well, so non-fans had little chance to get interested. When the song actually was climbing both on i-tunes and mediabase, there was nary a video in sight. I think the eventual video was only played on VH-1 3 or 4 weeks before it was pulled. That set of circumstances did little to help either the song or video take off, and TBH, even though I’m a fan and love anything Kris appears in, that unfortunate screw-up on Jive’s part made it money not well spent.

All that said, I do get what you’re saying. :)

  35. Don’t get me wrong, Adam is a remarkable singer (just not my taste) but I feel he is more on the media’s attention because of his gayness and personality lately than his music. According to my twitter feed, #AlrightwithMe is trending in NY, L.A. and Sydney, Australia

girlygirl that’s terrific seeing there’s never been any promotion whatsoever for Kris here. Gee I wish I desired to be on twitter to help out here in Sydney ….Would be good if Sony looked at twitter trends- they might see there is a demand for Kris here after all!!

Speaking of trends- I’m not going with the one of lessening the news about AWM being added to radio. Kris is happy about it so I’m happy. Such good timing coming before his concerts with Lifehouse where Kris will no doubt be pushing AWM as the single- something he was loathe to do for TT- his heart just wasn’t in it!!

  37. Very excited about Alright With Me, I think it is a killer song and so fun. What a huge accomplishment for Kris! I am so happy that a song he is so proud of and that he co-wrote is going to radio. I could sit here and rant about the unfair practices of labels/radioplay, not just for Kris, but all artists, but I don’t want to dwell on all that. No matter the amount of Debbie Downering, I can’t help but smile and be happy about this single.

As for TT, timing could not have been worse, what are PD’s going to play, Train’s new single (If Its Love – which happens to diss idol singers) that is climbing the charts, or a sad song that kris allen didn’t write, that has pat monahan singing on it? Plus they still were playing soul sister all the time, talk about pat monahan oversaturation. They should have trusted Kris to sing his own song.

  38. As for TT, timing could not have been worse, what are PD’s going to play, Train’s new single (If Its Love I which happens to diss idol singers) that is climbing the charts, or a sad song that kris allen didn’t write, that has pat monahan singing on it? Plus they still were playing soul sister all the time, talk about pat monahan oversaturation. They should have trusted Kris to sing his own song.

Selecting TT as a single was braindead IMHO, doing the vocal remix was braindead IMHO and released a video so late in the song’s life was braindead. But I am not one of those brilliant Jive execs — so what do I know??

Glad that Kris has a single released that he co-wrote, that he sings and that actually sounds like him.

They should have trusted Kris to sing his own song.

    ITA 110%

  39. Well Adam sure seems excited 3 exclamation marks at the end of each sentance

@adamlambert Excited to perform for my Malaysian fans tonight!!! My priority is giving you a great show, and I don’t mind making a slight compromise to do so. You all are more than worth it!!! Bust out the glitter!!!

  40. Excited for Kris’s fans; good luck on AWM!

How do you know there won’t be an add date? I’m confused. Seems like songs always go out for a bit to get played before an official add date.

  41. I do find it ironic that both Kris and Lee have singles released at the same time. I am sure the media, public will compare them endlessly. I can already see the fan wars exploding. Kris does have a lot of pressure with AWM. I can see Jive blaming him (since he co-wrote the song) if it doesn’t do well. And I’ve always felt one of Kris’ biggest negative is being managed by 19. They’ve always been pretty clear on how they felt about him winning.

  42. I’ll still be glad when Adam’s out of there! And I hope nobody gets left behind at the airport this time.

AWM just got announced a few days ago-I think it’s a little soon for predictions of doom. I’m glad Kris has a good song to promote this fall.

  43. How fun that Kelly, Danny and Mandisa are at Carrie’s concert! Wonder if they are hanging with Reba?

Hope they just have a good time. I know Danny has been working his butt off the past year, and they all need to just have a good time.
He has 3 concerts in a row this weekend, so glad he can relax tonight.

  44. Maybe I don’t know enough about it, but it seems that Jive is getting AWM out pronto to coincide with Kris’s tour with Lifehouse. AWM was released to radio today – the tour starts tomorrow. Kris can’t introduce the song as his new single if it hasn’t been released.

Funny, people are usually complaining about Jive dragging its feet where Kris’s releases are concerned.

How do you know there won’t be an add date? I’m confused. Seems like songs always go out for a bit to get played before an official add date.

    That’s what I thought also.

  45. And I’ve always felt one of Kris’ biggest negative is being managed by 19. They’ve always been pretty clear on how they felt about him winning.

What? How did they feel? Sure wasn’t clear to me. I think 19 has done the best they could with Kris. Not feeling the negativity from his management at all. He’s getting another single isn’t he? Jeez!

  46. I do find it ironic that both Kris and Lee have singles released at the same time.

Yes, this does seem unusual. Perhaps this is a positive thing? If someone likes one AI champ’s single they might check out other AI champ’s song?

I’m trying to recall when Cook’s last single was sent to radio. It seems like Cook’s radio promo was over by the time Kris released his first single.

  47. I do find it ironic that both Kris and Lee have singles released at the same time.

Does ‘at the same time’ mean ‘two weeks apart’? because Lee’s single hasn’t been released yet. October 26th, isn’t it?

I don’t get why this is unusual. Archie also just released a single. People release singles irrespective of when other people do – they release them when they need to release them. They can’t hold off for weeks just because somebody else is releasing something. Lee and Kris are on different labels, anyway.

  48. jonina12:]
I hear you and feel the same way. AWM has soooo much potential (many fans and non fans seem to like this song, even if few may post they don’t) and I would hate to see it ‘wasted’ in order for Jive to prove something. Like the “fact” (used loosely) that their release of TT was not the wrong song, but that PD’s and DJ’s just were no longer interested in hearing from Kris Allen.

This is something I hope I am soooo wrong about. My hope is that Jive had to release TT due to some kind of contract obligation and that they believe in AWM. Jive, please come through on this for me (and others).

My gut feeling is that this could be huge for Kris and Jive alike!!

  49. Lee and Kris are on different labels. If they were on the same label it might be a little odd that their singles are being released close together, but not in this case.

Besides, Lee’s release is timed in conjunction with his album, while the release of AWM probably has more to do with the fact that Kris is going back out on tour the day after tomorrow than anything else.

  50. Danny Gokey tweets:

At the Carrie Underwood concert in Nashville- I just have to say is….girl can SAAAANGGGG!!!! 19 minutes ago via Twitterrific

  51. Yes, this does seem unusual. Perhaps this is a positive thing? If someone likes one AI champ’s single they might check out other AI champ’s song?

Everything isn’t about American Idol. There are actually music buyers who have never watched the show, and who base their purchases on whether or not they like a song. Neither Kris or Lee’s success or failure depends on what the other person is doing. There will be the usual comparisons made from within the AI bubble, but they will mean as much as the discussion about LLWD being a cover.

I’m trying to recall when Cook’s last single was sent to radio. It seems like Cook’s radio promo was over by the time Kris released his first single.

I find this ironic, the fact that you can’t remember shows how unimportant and baseless the whole thing is.

  52. I don’t get why this is unusual.

I am just comparing this with Cook’s radio run and I don’t mean anything negative at all towards Kris, Lee or even Cook.

When Kris’s album came out, I seem to recall that Cook’s radio promo was over. This year is different, Kris, the previous season’s AI champ, is still going strong. Perhaps some longtime AI watchers can tell me if my recollection is correct?

Also the good news for Kris is that his single should peak around the beginning of the new AI season and he will probalby get to perform it on the show. I know Cook came back and performed on Season 9, but he didn’t have a single to promote so he did the Rolling Stones song.

  53. Kirsten said to look to non-committed casual fans for to find which way the wind is really blowing on a song. My daughter is 22 and hasn’t watched idol since, well she may have watched the Bo and Carrie year. She knows I like Kris Allen, but we don’t talk about him. I did buy her the c-d for her birthday to encourage her a little. She heard LLYD a lot and liked it. Tonight I told her he has a new song going to radio, and her exact words were: “Oh, I hope it’s that alright song. I like that one.” So there you have one fairly unbiased opinion.

  54. I find this ironic, the fact that you can’t remember shows how unimportant and baseless the whole thing is.

LOL. Listen, I’m just discussing these two singles in relation to AI because this is an AI blog.

I must not be making myself clear. It appears that I am unintentionally upsetting people. I don’t see anything negative whatsoever about Lee and Kris releasing singles close together. To me, there is no downside.

  55. I am just comparing this with Cook’s radio run and I don’t mean anything negative at all towards Kris, Lee or even Cook.

undercooked, it seems you quoted my response to everything‘s post, as if my remarks were directed to you – but they were actually directed to the other poster. So I, for one, was not objecting to anything you wrote!

I can see how it must have seemed like I was responding to your comment about the situation being unusual, but I wasn’t actually responding to your post, just the other poster.

  56. LOL. Listen, I’m just discussing these two singles in relation to AI because this is an AI blog.

I understand, and I wasn’t trying to put you down, but I think that your statement about not remembering about Cook’s single shows how many of us tend to view things from inside the AI bubble. It’s like the argument that Lee’s first single won’t do well because it doesn’t sound like anything that he did on AI. Well, the truth is that the vast majority of people won’t have a clue about Lee’s pre-idol music or what he did on AI, so the argument really doesn’t matter.

  57. Mandisa tweets :

@mandisaofficial: Carrie Underwood is officially 1 of my all-time favorite voices! AMAZING concert! Best moment was Jesus Take the Wheel/How Great Thou Art!!!

  58. Wow, I think it’s absolutely amazing (in a weird way) about how much press Adam is getting for this Malaysian concert, so many media people at the press conference. A lot of them will probably be at the concert, trying to get a story first hand at what he will or wouldn’t do live. Hope (strongly doubt it thought) this can put to rest to some people minds, at least in the media, that seem to think that Adam is just this risque performer that does all of these antics on stage just for publicity etc.

  59. Also the good news for Kris is that his single should peak around the beginning of the new AI season and he will probalby get to perform it on the show.

Oh how I wish that would be true! But since he didn’t get to perform LLWD on AI when it was at its peak, I’m not going to hold my breath.

YAY for AWM being released to radio!

Taylor Hicks (S5) released his first single on Feb 5, 2007 and Carrie Underwood (S4) released Wasted from her first album on Feb 6, 2007 (that’s also when “Before He Cheats” began really taking wing on the non-country charts). So, it has happened before that one Idol winner is still promoting when the next one releases their album.

When you take into account all the other Idols and the cycle for release, you often find Idols releasing singles close together. There are 9 seasons worth of Idols. It’s getting hard for them to avoid each other. Fantasia released her second album on the same day Taylor released his first.

This topic comes up quite often, especially during the busy Q4 release time. Back in S1, Justin had to wait for 6 months after Kelly released before he could release music. That avoided him stealing her thunder, but rather hurt his career. Since then, there seems to be an agreement that Idols should worry about their own careers. Many times, the first Idol single of the season doesn’t even come from the winner.

  61. That’s so cool that Kelly, Mandisa, and Danny could all got to Carrie’s concert tonight. I love how supportive the idols are of each other even across different seasons.

  62. hmmm Adam’s new album is coming out in summer now not spring? @msnbuzz was at Adam’s lastest press conferance in Malaysia

msnbuzz Adam says he’s gonna work on a new album during the winter for a release in the summer. We can’t wait

“Alright With Me” has been released to radio! So call your radio stations and request that stuff! #alrightwithme

Yaaay! Can’t wait to hear it on radio!
And why do I have the feeling Kris was going to use s**t and quickly changed it to “stuff”. “Stuff” doesn’t quite fit. LMAO.

  65. I read about Kris tweet about 5 hours ago, but did not go to the headline thread till now.
I was at Lee’s thread trying to read them, just because every other post, Kris name is mentioned, so I had to check.

You guys are depressing me . Aghhh !
I thought that it was a good thing for the single to be released to radio. Of course I don’t understand anything about add date, I thought it is the same thing.
Anyway, if JIVE doesn’t push / promote this catchy, bouncy, great single of Kris, I don’t know what to say anymore.
I’ve been playing AWM on repeats whenever I’m at my car, and it sounds so great for radio.

    Good luck Kris.

  66. When Kris’s album came out, I seem to recall that Cook’s radio promo was over. This year is different, Kris, the previous season’s AI champ, is still going strong. Perhaps some longtime AI watchers can tell me if my recollection is correct

Whether or not you actually get a 3rd single is obviously a huge factor. David didnt get one, his album was actually still selling but about to fall off the BB200 so they didnt bother . Jive cranks out singles more than RCA.

  67. I’m trying to recall when Cook’s last single was sent to radio. It seems like Cook’s radio promo was over by the time Kris released his first single.

Come Back to Me was released sometime around March 2009. The video came out in early April. I remember that the song, the video, and the album stayed on the charts through this time last year.

I think that the release of singles has a lot to do with how well the album and singles are doing, and that part of the reason another song wasn’t released was that the album and singles were doing well, and the tour was doing extremely well at this time last year. It seemed as though once the tour was over, there wasn’t much more promotion, except for a few tv appearances. And the plan was to start working on the next album soon after that.

In Kris’s case, really only one single has done well, and the album hasn’t done that well, either. I’m hoping that it does better, because I really do like his album.

  68. Looks like the Allen family is enjoying a late night party before Kris leaves today for tour. New songs? Brand new or New covers?

    allen_kimberly
Happiness is all my children around the dining room table laughing and then ending the evening with an impromptu concert of new songs!

  69. Hooray for new songs! Mama Allen is as much of a tease as her son!

apparently there is a lot of press

It’s going to be a very exciting concert today in Malaysia, should be a lot of press in attendance. By the end of this International tour, Adam is going to have a large stark of gifts to remember each country by.

  71. I hope some director gets Siobhan signed for a Halloween flick to be released next October. The girl has obvious talent to go along with her beautiful voice. That is scary!

  72. As the music biz depends more on singles, Idols get more singles. But singles need major push or they die. Let’s see what happens with Kris. I’m not sure Lee and Kris will affect each other much. But 19 will be giving Lee all the available promo they can. That’s how the game is played.

If I didn’t read this blog I wouldn’t know one thing about the Adam/Malaysia thing. It’s gotten zero play in the US media. It’s a big deal over there obviously. ;)

  73. I have to agree with jpfan. If it weren’t for reading it here, I wouldn’t have known anything about the Adam-Malaysia thing, either. Of course if you search it on Google you’ll find the places that report it. But I didn’t search it, and I guess I don’t frequent those sites.

  74. I haven’t searched for articles about Adam in Asia, but I did notice two brief articles about Adam’s Malaysia concert in the Arts section of the print edition of the New York Times, one yesterday and one the day before (I’m a subscriber). So anyone who reads the NY Times is likely to see coverage–that is far from zero play.

  75. It’s guess it’s just a personal observation based what I actually have seen, which is nada, other than here.

Anyway, when you do controversial things you’re going to get more coverage than if you don’t do controversial things. I don’t see the big deal about getting press for being controversial, frankly. Of course it’s going to happen.

  76. The negative attitude toward AWM’s release here is puzzling. How many said that Kris would be lucky if Jive didn’t stop this era without a third single? Now Kris gets that coveted third single, but it’s still all doom and gloom because of the perception that Jive supposedly won’t promote it. I don’t understand this.

The old saying is true: You can’t win for losing and nothing is good enough. If someone wants to be a cynic, they’ll find a way to do so. And this is coming from someone who can be jaded with the best of them.

  77. The negative attitude toward AWM’s release here is puzzling.

You can’t win for losing and nothing is good enough. If someone wants to be a cynic, they’ll find a way to do so.

Ditto, LaRue. After all, they have only released ONE single from Kris’ album that didn’t go platinum. That’s pretty darn good!

  78. I am really happy Kris has his third single, looking forward to following its progress and yay for the start of the Lifehouse/Kris tour tomorrow, I have missed the concert posts and daily Kris news.

  79. So Lee gets a call in radio interview to debut his first single, “Live It Up” no I mean “Sweet Serendipity”. When Kris released LLWD he did it live at Z100 with film interviews with both jambajim and Slezak. Z100 posted Kris’s interview on their website and had Kris to their huge Jingle Ball. Seems like Kris got tons more coverage and it seems like SS is a rehash of LLWD, just my own opinion. So while Kris fans get so worried about him and how Jive treats him, you could turn it around and say Lee is coming out slighted by his label. #alrightwithme

  80. it seems like SS is a rehash of LLWD

I’m tired of hearing this already. The lyrics of the two songs couldn’t be more dissimilar, for one thing. SS is a song about how somebody is not going to worry, no matter what happens, because things will turn out fine. LLWD is about how we have to sieze the moment before it’s too late, tell people we love them before they’re gone, etc. The two songs don’t sound anything alike to me, either.

  81. Ross,
I completely agree with you regarding the difference between LLWD and SS. My description (rehash) was inelegant and not very accurate. I think I was mostly reacting to the ability of some to turn every exciting bit of Kris news into a downer. For example the terrific news that AWM is released to radio! There followed immediately all the concern and worry posts. I just wanted to point out that the release of LLWD seemed, at least to me, handled with much more excitement and media push than the release of Live It Up. I mean SS.

Regarding comparisons of LLWD and SS, Michael Slezak’s review made some excellent points:

“Much like “Live Like We’re Dying,” the debut single from season 8 champ Kris Allen, “Sweet Serendipity” packs words into its chorus more aggressively than an overstuffed New York-style deli sandwich.”

“To continue the “Live Like We’re Dying” comparison (because I can, and because they are not dissimilar ditties) I wish “Sweet Serendipity” contained some of the former song’s coiled energy. The tense guitar line of Kris’s track — combined with the drawn-out strain he delivered on “liiiiive like we’re dying” (not to mention the background “whoa-oh-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh, oh-oh-ohs“) gave that single an intensity — a demand that you drop what you’re doing and pay attention, or at least sing along — that “Sweet Serendipity” lacks.”
