American Idol’ Lee DeWyze’s first single, ‘Sweet Serendipity’

Last week, we previewed four new songs for you from Lee DeWyze’s post-”American Idol” debut, “Live it Up, ” including the title track, which was tagged as the first single.

Well, these things can always change. Yesterday we got the call from DeWyze’s rep that instead of “Live It Up, ” the new single would be a tune called “Sweet Serendipity, ”and it would debut on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show on Wednesday morning. Even without hearing it, we were happy to hear the news since, as we wrote, we weren’t sure that “Live It Up” was the right call. It turns out “Sweet Serendipity” is a much stronger choice.

Lee DeWyze Thanks His Lucky Stars On His Debut Single “Sweet Serendipity”

Oh boy, is “Sweet Serendipity” sweet — the positive, inoffensive feel good tune is the definition of playing it safe. We understand why 19 Recordings would pick the most fool-proof track to lead off with, but we just hope Lee’s next few singles have a bit more bite to them — after all, this is the guy who bared his soul in “The Boxer” and was ballsy enough to add a bagpipe player to his “Hey Jude” performance. It’s natural for us to expect a little more from him.

Lee DeWyze’s Debut Single Is Changed At Last Minute…Why?

But honestly, from what I heard last week when I went to 19 Entertainment to hear some of Lee’s finished songs, “Sweet Serendipity” and “Live It Up” are quite similiar in vibe: Easy-breezy and cheerful (perhaps an attempt to improve Lee’s “Idol” image of being serious, quiet, and somewhat lacking in superstar personality), with a distinctly Mrazzy influence. So if anyone–the label, management, radio gatekeepers, Lee himself–had doubts or concerns about “Live It Up, ” I’m not sure why they went with such a soundalike track. I personally prefer “Live It Up” and think RCA should have just well enough alone, or maybe they could have gone with something a little darker and deeper, with that supposed Sufjan Stevens influence Lee is always enthusiastically mentioning in interviews.

Lee DeWyze debuts ‘Sweet Serendipity’: What do you think?

There’s nothing wrong with “Sweet Serendipity, ” the bouncy debut single from American Idol season 9 champ Lee DeWyze. Rhythmically, it skips along like a smooth stone across a placid pond. Melodically, it could serve as the baby greens on a satisfactory lite-rock sandwich. But at the risk of overtaxing those ridiculous/disparate similes, it’s hard to imagine “Sweet Serendipity” creating a lot of waves, or becoming anybody’s favorite new flavor at radio. It’s a vaguely inspirational, vaguely catchy affair, tailor made for the middle third of a Katherine Heigl or Kate Hudson rom-com trailer. You know, the part where they show a couple of sun-drenched urban vistas and quick-cut shots of our working-girl heroine learning to let loose, be free, and put a little love in her heart. Which isn’t the worst thing in the world, really. And though the song itself is a little generic, Lee’s gruff growl of a voice manages to not get sandpapered into submission by the major-label production; 15 seconds in, you know exactly who’s singing it. A couple other thoughts:

Extreme Makeovers: Billboard Charts Edition, Part 2

“Hello, ” David Cook, 2008

Of all the charted “American Idol” covers, none may have generated more attention than this David Cook performance, which added rock wails to Lionel Richie’s R&B ballad – and helped spur Cook’s eventual ascension to the 2008 “Idol” throne. “Hello” charted at No. 73 on the Hot 100, along with his similar rock makeovers of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” (No. 47) and Mariah Carey’s “Always Be My Baby” (No. 67).

Derek Hough: Ryan Seacrest ‘Fits Right in with My Family’

“He fits right in with my family, ” Julianne Hough’s pro-dancer brother Derek tells PEOPLE. “We’re all kind of goofy and quirky, so it works out well.”

Derek, 25, says it’s Seacrest’s personality that has won over his clan – not the glamorous life the TV and radio star leads.

“You know, my family’s not really into private jets and things like that, ” Derek says. “We’re very about family and love and everything like that, so [the flashy] side of [Ryan] is irrelevant for me. He’s very nice and very funny. I think as long as he’s a good guy and treats [Julianne] well, then I’m a happy man.”

‘DWTS’ Florence Henderson Gets Sexy Text From ‘Brady Bunch’ Son

Florence Henderson’s slinky black lace dress and sexy Rumba moves on ‘Dancing with the Stars‘ this week were surely saucy enough to get someone’s fire burning, but who would’ve thought it would’ve been her former costar (and onetime date) Barry Williams?

That’s right, ‘The Brady Bunch‘ mom revealed to reporters after Tuesday’s results show this juicy tidbit: “I got several text messages from Barry Williams, Greg. And he said, ‘Great energy. Your moves were great.’ He said, ‘I’m so jealous of Corky Ballas.’ Well, you know we dated, so there you have it. He’d be a great guest on this show because he can dance. He can sing. He’d be a terrific guest, ” she added.

Dancing with the Stars” Derek Hough Goes ‘Extreme’

Derek Hough took off his dancing shoes and replaced them with a pair of sturdy work boots when he joined the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” team and several of the other “Dancing with the Stars” professional dancers to build a home for a deserving family.

How well did you do with power tools?

Derek Hough: I actually love doing handiwork and stuff growing up around the house with my dad and whatnot. I was excited to be around a construction site and seeing a house being demolished and then rebuilt as this beautiful home for this amazing family. It was really beautiful. I can’t say that my dance experience really helped, although, we did do a fun kind of ’80s montage demolition day.
