Idol Headlines for 09/23/10

J.Lo met with Paula Abdul weeks before ‘Idol’ deal

However, sources close to Paula Abdul’s new dance competition show, “Got to Dance” on CBS, say that Lopez and her manager Benny Medina were taking meetings with key “Got to Dance” execs just weeks ago.

“There was serious consideration to having her be a part of the judges’ panel for Paula’s show, ” said a well-placed source. “The ‘Idol’ talks were still going, but the talks with J.Lo and Paula’s show were serious ones.”

New ‘American Idol’ Judges: What Does Jim Cantiello Think?

Today, the heavens parted and Nigel Lythgoe descended upon a Los Angeles press room to share with the world his plan for “American Idol” season 10. Or, as Randy Jackson kept calling it, “American Idol: The Remix.” (Yo, dawg, stop saying that. It’s lame with a capital NO.)

Yep, we have confirmed, new judges. (Nice to meet you Jennifer Lopez and the Madame puppet, I mean Steven Tyler.) But in a somewhat surprising twist, Nigel and Ken Warwick also announced a host of format changes that made “Idol” freaks giddy with excitement. And dread.

New ‘Idol’ judges have star power, but is that enough?

“American Idol” made official on Wednesday what has been rumored for months — Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez will join Big Dawg Randy Jackson to form the “American Idol” panel of judges for season 10.

Though the announcement was preceded by the usual Hollywood visual effects ( albeit with no sound, at least at the beginning), it had all the drama and suspense that could be expected from a surprise party a television show throws for itself. Wow, really? J.Lo and the Aerosmith guy? Who knew? (Besides everyone with an Internet connection.)

‘Rock of Ages’ at Bank of America Theatre: Maroulis and music of the ’80s still wanna ‘Rock’

Whatever they’re paying Constantine Maroulis — the lovable, shaggy-headed pop star with the sweet smile and the megawatt voice — to tour in “Rock of Ages, ” it just ain’t enough.

Without Maroulis, this jukebox satire of 1980s rock culture would be a shrill parody. Sure, it would still be a good time for the lost children of the Reagan revolution, in the way that singing along to late-night K-Tel record commercials used to be a good time, assuming the right intoxicating beverage was in hand, the right company was on your arm, and adult responsibilities were but a speck in one’s sparkly, pre-digital future.

Sons of Sylvia Make mom proud

Ashley Clark arrived in Nashville with no prospects for establishing a music career. But he had faith.

Soon after, he landed in emerging star Carrie Underwood’s group. With his brothers, he won a network TV band contest. Now, as Sons of Sylvia, they’re touring with Underwood (playing San Jose’s HP Pavilion on Monday). Soon these charismatic siblings should be headlining arenas themselves.

Opening for Underwood, playing appealing songs from their hit “Revelation” album, Sons of Sylvia are earning enthusiastic responses and long lines at the autograph table. “Crazy things happen in the line sometimes, ” lead vocalist/fiddler Ashley said, laughing. “Girls grabbing you, trying to kiss you, showing you their boobs.”
