Local American Idols in town

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) – The hit FOX TV show “American Idol” is gearing up for its tenth anniversary season and, as a special promotion, FOX crews are heading to all of the past winners’ hometowns to see where they came from and what they are up to now.

FOX6 was on the set Tuesday as both local American Idols Taylor Hicks and Ruben Studdard filmed their segments.

“It means a lot to come back, ” said Hicks about returning to Birmingham.

For Studdard, he still calls Alabama home.

“Even though I’ll go away and work and come back, I’ve always kept Birmingham my home. And I’m so happy and thankful that God has continued to bless me here in this city.”

Exclusive: How Fantasia Barrino Handled Her Scandals

Oh, Fantasia Barrino, where did we go wrong? First we were dazzled by you on American Idol. Then, you had us in tears with your first two albums and biography, Life Is Not A Fairytale. Then, just before dropping your acclaimed Top Ten disc, Back To Me, last month, everything imploded (let’s not even get into your prior bankruptcy and health troubles). You were accused of stealing another woman’s husband, had a bad breakup and then attempted suicide. But there is one up note to all the drama: your music remains as poignant as ever. Why? Enter Claude Kelly, the famed songwriter and vocal producer behind megahits for Kelly Clarkson, Whitney Houston and Miley Cyrus, to explain. He’s also currently cooking up new stuff with Jennifer Hudson, Britney Spears, latest Idol Lee Dewyze and David Archuleta, but he had time to chat with Usmagazine.com about ‘Tasia (for whom he penned both of her recent singles, “Bittersweet” and “I’m Doin’ Me”), Kelly Clarkson’s True Blood fanaticism and trying to get Christina Aguilera into the smash HBO show.

‘Idol’ Struggles To Re-Create Its Winning Panel

After months of rumor and speculation, one of the most popular television shows in the world, American Idol, is scheduled to announce a new lineup of judges to steer the next Carrie Underwood toward stardom — or the next Clay Aiken toward 15 precious minutes of fame.

In the show’s first eight seasons, Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell formed the trifecta that helped make American Idol a franchise worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Cowell arguably brought the most authority, as a music executive with decades of experience and a masterly mean streak.

‘Glee’: Chord Overstreet talks about his big mouth, name and singing in the shower

Chord Overstreet has a big mouth and can laugh about it.

In the Season 2 premiere of “Glee” Tuesday night (Sept. 20), Overstreet plays transfer student Sam Evans, whom Puck (Mark Salling) rather tactlessly asks, “Dude, your mouth is huge. How many tennis balls can you fit in there?”

“I laughed when I read that in the script, ” Overstreet tells Zap2it. “I mean, I always got compliments or comments on my lips because I do have big lips. They definitely write about the actors’ actual features, which I think is funny. It’s something everybody’s thinking and when you actually hear it on the show, it’s like ‘I can’t believe they said that.'”

‘Dancing With the Stars’ results recap: Elimination shocker!

Well, I didn’t see that coming. This evening ushered in the first results show of “Dancing With the Stars’ ” 11th season, and while Tom and Brooke kept dropping hints that this week’s elimination was a surprising one, I wasn’t sure whether to believe them.

But slap me upside the head and call me Shirley, this first-round cut really was a doozy.

Because, while he may have worn a shirt that said he wasn’t dead yet, David Hasselhoff’s time on this show has gone officially kaput.

‘Glee’ returns huge, wins Tuesday

Fox’s pop TV phenomena “Glee” exploded in the ratings Tuesday night.

That’s up a whopping 20% from its premiere last fall and easily ranked as the highest-rated show of the night. The “Glee” rating comes despite the musical comedy launching Fox’s lineup at 8 p.m. instead of receiving a lead-in at 9 p.m. like last year.

  1. Looks like Fantasia is up next for the AI winner’s promos for AI10. I guess they will get Kris between the time he gets back from Europe until the Lifehouse tour starts.

Excuse my ignorance, but is NC North Carolina? What’s the connection to Arkansas?

@crystalbowersox: “How amazing. Got to meet my all time favorite actor, mr. Ed Norton. Hes a fan. http://twitpic.com/2qqezl“

Ugh, beyond jealous. That’s awesome. Girl Up is awesome too. Cool that Crystal’s able to get involved in such cool things. Wonder how the record’s going? Speaking of, not much news on the Lee front. Is he holed up in the studio? Calm before the storm? I would expect single news soon, right?

That Claude Kelly interview from US Magazing was pretty cool. The intro paragraph was strange, but his questions and answers were interesting. One thing he said about Fantasia confused me though:

CK: No boyfriends in the studio, but I will say that she definitely incorporates her real life in her music. A lot of the songs that we wrote.US: How so?
CK: If she felt like she was angry or hurt, she always slipped me tiny notes on corners of papers that would say, ‘Incorporate this into the song because this is how I feel today.’ All of the songs that we did on her album are literally from what she was going through on that given day.

So… I’m confused, do those little notes from Fantasia on corners of paper constitute co-writing? I’m thinking no (that sounds way too easy to get your name on a song), but he said “we wrote”, so I’m confused.

ETA: Thanks for answering, Elliegrll. I should’ve looked up that info myself, but lazy =P

  3. So… I’m confused, do those little notes from Fantasia on corners of paper constitute co-writing? I’m thinking no (that sounds way too easy to get your name on a song), but he said “we wrote”, so I’m confused.

Claude Kelly did have a co-writer on the songs that he wrote, so It makes sense that he would use the word we. Fantasia is listed as a co-writer on two songs, but neither were co-written by Claude Kelly. Still if she was giving Claude notes about the tone of the songs that he was writing, then, IMHO, she played a role in the final product, even if she’s not listed as being one of the songs’ writers.

  4. Excuse my ignorance, but is NC North Carolina? What’s the connection to Arkansas?

You are correct NC = North Carolina. NC is another AI winner’s (Fantasia) home state. Fans had been inquiring about when Kris’ shoot would be scheduled since he has been home and available for a couple of weeks. He is about to leave for the USO tour and when he gets back has a week or so before begining the Lifehouse tour. Once back on the road, it’s another insane tour schedule with very little time off.

  5. I know Claude Kelly wrote with David Cook also and he was impressed with him. Wonder if maybe they aren’t using the song they wrote.

  6. A bit of rumour-mongering, but someone edited the wiki page and put in David Foster, Jennifer Lopez, Mathew Knowles as three new judges. Yeah, anyone can edit the page, so it can be all nonsense or a bit of wishful thinking since Steven Tyler is thought to be all but certain a judge. But posting it anyway because I do think Steven Tyler is a bad idea if he turns out to be the new judge, there are just better candidates around, and it would be the latest in a series of bad judgements made by the show’s producers I think.

  7. do not want steven tyler as well.. i wish it was someone who’s job is to sign artist.. randy the producer, j-lo the performer, the third judge should be a career eye or something… all i know is steven is also a performer/rock legend, but did he develop new artist? never heard about it… or maybe im wrong.

  8. @girlup: And a moving tribute sung by @crystalbowersox. Want to give a High Five to girls? Visit GirlUp.org now.

Soon as someone gets a hold of this clip please post. “Crystal” and “moving tribute” in the same sentence sounds epic.

  9. songwriter Zac Maloy tweets that David Cook’ single “Come Back to Me” has sold gold –
hey, i know how many of ya downloaded “come back to me”. 500,118…..wait a sec. that’s gold baby! congrats to @thedavidcook and his camp!!!

  10. I think my local Fox 11 news will air the AI announcement live. Hopefully.
ETA: yea, it is other news now, but they will air it live when it happens.

    myFOXla.com

ETA: Did not happen. Not even 1 second shown. LOL

#Thanks everyone for helping “Come Back To Me” reach Gold Status! You’re all so incredible! 15 minutes ago via web

    Congrats, David!

  12. Happy for Cookie. I wonder what the album is up to these days? Should be inching towards 1.5 mill I would imagine.

  13. Oh, I’m really pleased CBTM finally reached Gold: even though it’s not exactly my favourite song on DCTR and I’m never going to be happy that it was released as a single!

But it does mean that DCTR can be a platinum album, with two platinum singles and one gold one released from it and that can’t be a bad thing, when the publicity for DCTR2 starts up.

  14. Oh, I’m really pleased CBTM finally reached Gold

Yeah, I knew it would happen, but I somehow figured it would take several more months. Anyway, it’s always nice to get real sales numbers (500,118). It’s been too too long since we got any on the David Cook front. Thanks Zac!

  15. Aww I’m so happy CBTM went gold! I too thought if it did happen it would be months away. Not bad for a song that was mainly a HAC hit, and nice for David to have another plaque to go along with all that platinum!

  16. Congrats David.

You do have a lot of shiny stuff to hang on the wall.
