Few acting Sparks, but musical still hits high notes

What’s less surprising: that Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights” is proving remarkably resilient — or that “American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks can’t act? Over the years, “Idol” has turned into a mini-farm team for Broadway replacements, with former contestants brought in to spice up long-running shows. There’s little risk of that: Four years after winning “American Idol, ” Sparks comes across as bubbly but carefully poised as she makes her Broadway debut in the 2008 Tony Award-winning musical “In the Heights.”

Calling from a recent tour stop in Indianapolis, 18-year-old Allison Iraheta took a moment to reflect on what she’d be doing if she hadn’t been a contestant on “American Idol” last year.
