Few acting Sparks, but musical still hits high notes

What’s less surprising: that Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights” is proving remarkably resilient — or that “American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks can’t act? Over the years, “Idol” has turned into a mini-farm team for Broadway replacements, with former contestants brought in to spice up long-running shows. Fear of ‘Heights’

Jordin Sparks’ greatest gift — the voice that made her an American Idol — is also her Achilles heel.

Only 20, fresh off her second solo album tour and now in Broadway’s “In the Heights, ” she’s survived voice-threatening injuries that sidelined Julie Andrews, Steven Tyler and Frank Sinatra.

Jordin Sparks Reaches the ‘Heights’ of Broadway

It is a joy Jordin Sparks has yet to savor.

“I haven’t gone to Times Square to stand there and actually look at it yet, ” the 20-year-old singer says of her 34-foot-by-20-foot image that hangs in front of millions of passers-by. “I’m nervous people are going to see me staring at me and then go, ‘OK, she’s a weirdo.'”

There’s little risk of that: Four years after winning “American Idol, ” Sparks comes across as bubbly but carefully poised as she makes her Broadway debut in the 2008 Tony Award-winning musical “In the Heights.”

Calling from a recent tour stop in Indianapolis, 18-year-old Allison Iraheta took a moment to reflect on what she’d be doing if she hadn’t been a contestant on “American Idol” last year.
