Album Sales Hit Low Mark For Third Time This Year

For the third time this year, weekly album sales have dipped under the 5 million mark, and this week established the latest low watermark for that measure in the history of Nielsen SoundScan.

“I’m in the middle of working on an album and on the Rascal Flatts tour, so trying to juggle that and plan a wedding has been a challenge, ” she said Tuesday at the ASCAP Awards in Nashville. “I think once the record gets finished I can jump into wedding mode.”

As for getting into tip-top shape, the bride-to-be seems to already have that part down. Down two dress sizes since the CMT Awards in June, Pickler credits a change in eating habits and cutting out “a lot of junk.”

Idol winner comes to Paramount

Think you remember Taylor Hicks, the salt-and-pepper-haired, happy-go-lucky Alabama boy who won the 2006 American Idol?

Well, you might need to think again.

“You have to create a character to imprint yourself on the brains of people who watch the show, ” Taylor explained to me when we talked about expectations for his Saturday night show at Rutland’s Paramount Theatre. “American Idol was more character-oriented than if I was allowed to play instruments like I do now.”

‘Idol’ star doubles on country

It’s no secret that country singer and “American Idol” alum Bucky Covington often has his fans seeing double.

In fact, the freaky mirror effect will be in full flower Friday night, when Covington and, yes, Covington converge on the stage at downtown Bloomington’s Six Strings.

He and his shadow are, in fact, Bucky and his identical twin brother, Rocky.

Michael Grimm: ‘I just never thought of winning this’

“I was so prepared to bow out — the biggest nightmare was standing next to her on stage — I knew she was going to win, ” Grimm told USA TODAY afterwards. “I just never thought of winning this.”

Grimm sang the Percy Sledge hit When A Man Loves A Woman in Tuesday’s finale. The “perfect song, a perfect delivery and a great performance, ” said AGT judge Sharon Osbourne.

Raised by the Butters, Grimm promised to use his winnings to buy them a new home. The Mississippi couple lost theirs in Hurricane Katrina.

And they’re not the only ones. Grimm revealed he plans to propose to Lucy, his girlfriend of nearly three years and the inspiration for his performance of “When a Man Loves a Woman” during Tuesday’s finals. “That’s my girl, ” he said, “and I’m not gonna let that one go.”

But even a nearly-engaged guy has crushes, and Grimm got to perform with one of his — Jewel — during the finale. “She’s amazing, ” he said of his duet partner on “Me and Bobby McGee.” “She made me feel so comfortable on stage. But [at one point] she smiled at me and I almost vomited. I couldn’t believe she smiled at me that way!”

lol, I read this headline too quickly and thought it said:

Chris Sligh Rises Above His Broken Wind

    Truly a newsworthy piece ;)

  3. Matt would announce news in the middle of a work day!!! I hope it is good. I will be getting it very late.

  4. Haven’t seen this in any of the other recent news threads. Sorry if I’m repeating somebody.

Via the ETrain via Amazon Japan — it appears that Elliott will be releasing an album in Japan on Nov. 24.

“This title will be released on November 24, 2010.”

And … the rest is in Japanese, and, apparently, not very descriptive. So I guess we don’t know whether this is new stuff, repackaged old stuff, or what. He has been in the studio quite a bit this year, it seems. So it may be new stuff. Interesting to see an apparently Japan-only or Japan-initially release, even though Elliott really has been big in Japan!

  5. 1. Matt Giraud, WOOT!!

    2. I think I have a girl crush on Jennifer Hudson. It’s been brewing for awhile now….

  6. Matt’s big news is a sponsorship deal with Yamaha Piano, from what I can gather from tweets.

So still no record deal? :(

Anyway, congrats to Matt. I hope this can lead to better things for him.

  7. I wondering how Matt would know he will be appearing on idol next year when they haven’t even announced the judge’s panel.

  8. Awesome news from Matt! It’s a huge deal to be part of Yamaha’s roster of world-class elite musicians. He definitely belongs there!
As for appearing on season 10, I think Matt’s referring to his Milwaukee audition appearance with Danny Gokey. Of course, how I wish he’d perform an original on the show itself, but we know not to hope for more.

  9. Congrats to Matt!

He keeps plugging along and good things will keep coming to him.

  10. Omg. I just ran into Lee at the airport. I was right behind him and his guitar at security. Soo surreal. My friend spotted him when she noticed paparazzi filming him. I didn’t say anything to him or take a pic but it was still fun!

  13. Diana will sing with her Idol, Dolly Parton at the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday.

Really sad that Grand Ole Opry is not aired anymore on CMT (was it ?)

  14. Yay for Matt’s Yamaha endorsement! That came out of nowhere. He is so accomplished on piano that it is hard to believe he is self taught and has only been playing for 6 years or so. To be on that list with so many superstars is truly an honor.

Have there ever been musical instrument endorsements for other AI finalists, or is the use of instruments too new? I would think there might be some guitar endorsements in the past, but I can’t think of any.

  15. Have there ever been musical instrument endorsements for other AI finalists, or is the use of instruments too new?

Taylor got some sort of harmonica endorsement (or maybe it was a guitar). Kris got a guitar endorsement last year (Gibson?) and I seem to recall Cook had one too.

Yamaha did give Josiah a piano (and other cool stuff) when he appeared on Ellen, but I don’t think he got an endorsement.

Speaking of endorsment type things, I saw an ad for Grey’s Anatomy last night that featurd some song in the background. They actually had the title with the name of the song and artist (like they do with the music videos). I thought it was an interesting bit of cross-marketing and I wonder if this is a new trend. Smart for everybody if they do that (how often are people asking what is such-and-such a song featured in an ad).

  16. very pretty poster for Kris

i’m very glad that Matt got this Yamaha endorsement!!

  17. America’s Got Talent‘s $1 Million Winner to Buy Home for Grandparents

  18. Well, it will be a small home. In previous years, this lovely $1 Million prize for AGT has been paid out over 20 years.

Isn’t like $25K a year or they can take the lump sum and give the government a big ol’ chunk of it? I have read so many different things I have no clue ;)

  19. Kris got a guitar endorsement last year (Gibson?) and I seem to recall Cook had one too.

Yup, Cook had a Gibson guitar endorsement too. In fact, fans founds this out as far back as the S7 AI tour because a fan gave him a Fender t-shirt and though he thanked the fan, he told them that he really couldn’t wear it because of the Gibson endorsement.

Their on-screen disclaimer says it’s paid out over 40 years.

  21. Their on-screen disclaimer says it’s paid out over 40 years.

    Seriously? WTF?

  22. Their on-screen disclaimer says it’s paid out over 40 years.

You are correct. I was wrong. I remember them being ridiculous terms, but thought it was 20 years for some reason. 40 is that much worse.

It’s better than noting, but not nearly as impressive as it sounds. I wouldn’t be suprised if you die before 40 years is up, you forfiet the rest of the prize.

  23. FYI, my mother won a lottery 25 years ago,(no where as big as what they are now) and it was paid at $500 a month until the total amount was used up. When she passed away there was money remaining and a lump sum of $10,000 was paid to the oldest surviving child.

  24. Thanks for the translation, Caden! I couldn’t get the “translate” thing to work, for some reason.

Sounds like this may be a new album then…. So….album number three released in Japan. Interesting development. I would think the good news is that this wouldn’t happen unless his Japanese label was convinced enough of his chances of success to do it, and he’s been on a very large (though still indie, I think?) label there. Nice to know that some big label somewhere seems to love Elliott!

  25. You are correct. I was wrong. I remember them being ridiculous terms, but thought it was 20 years for some reason. 40 is that much worse.

By the time you pay taxes, you’re going to end up with, what? $15,000 a year maybe? That won’t buy much house.
