Country Stars Take Over “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”

A private school outside Nashville that had been devastated by the flood in May is being rebuilt this week. Filming started Friday and runs through this Saturday, September 18. ABC won’t reveal who the country stars are. But, there’s a good chance Carrie Underwood is one of them.

She recently changed her next Grand Ole Opry performance from this Friday, September 17th to Thursday, September 16th. The Opry says it’s so the concert can be filmed for a show on Nashville’s recovery. Sounds like it could be ”Extreme Makeover: Home Edition!”

Chris Sligh, ‘The Anatomy of Broken’: A track-by-track review

showed a fondness for grand pop statements on 2008’s Running Back to You. That hasn’t gone away on The Anatomy of Broken: Few songs here finish without a sweep of strings or a dramatic leap into falsetto. But Chris has grown more confessional, and that’s where The Anatomy of Broken shines. It’s hardly a perfect album — but given its name and subject matter, it really shouldn’t be. It is, however, an honest and revealing one. Sometimes, that can be just as rewarding.

It’s been almost seven years since Diana DeGarmo, then a Snellville teen, lit up “American Idol, ” a popular television singing competition. Since her 15 minutes of fame, she has been building a credible résumé in musical theater, appearing on Broadway and taking some calculated career-building risks, such as getting naked in “Hair” and starring in the camp off-Broadway comedy “The Toxic Avenger.” (Yes, it’s not only a musical, it won awards.)

  1. Police say Stanley Neace, 47, ended Fugate’s fight for her children on Saturday, Neace allegedly shot the 30-year old mother, shot his wife, Sandra, her daughter, 28-year-old Rachel Strong, neighbor Dennis Turner, and 40-year-old Tammy Kilborn before killing himself. Witnesses say Fugate’s four children may have seen it all.

How truly tragic. Makes a lot of things seem pretty unimportant right now. I hope those kids can recover from witnessing something like that and condolences to all involved.

Absolutely. What a horrifying thing for these children. My heart breaks for them.

Which single? The first single, or the second first single? ;)

  11. Which single? The first single, or the second first single?

You’re right I should be more specific, Elevator. :-)

  12. David Cook tweets: “Shooting idol promo today back home. Happy Tuesday everyone!”

I wonder if they will make their way to Arkansas after Cook since Kris is home and in a neighboring state.

  13. You’re right I should be more specific, Elevator. :-)

Nah, your description fits both songs just fine ;)

Yeah, I know Elevator is a metaphor, but it’s lousy for lyrics. I picture a nursery school using this and kids in a circle standing up and down.

Jive should have bought Archie a hit song and left his songwriting for the album tracks.

ETA: Good luck to Archie and Jive, but I just don’t get their thinking lately.

  14. OT, but an lol on a slow Tuesday

No one can say Danny doesn’t put his all into it- funny footage from Cleveland of him jumping into the audience and then being boosted back up onto the stage by security, singing the whole time. He’s pretty fit, but not too tall, so I think that stage was harder to get back on than off

Those long suffering security guys have probably seen it all!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCJoebZEkx4&feature=player_embedded

  15. You know, I like Archie. He is a very talented guy. But, that Elevator song is awful. Honestly, it feels like it’s geared to Kindergarteners. I just don’t get what Jive is doing with David.

  16. I wonder if they will make their way to Arkansas after Cook since Kris is home and in a neighboring state.

Well based on Safarian’s tweet on 9/8, s/he mentioned upcoming shoots in KC, Phoenix and Birmingham.

Safarian gets together with Jordin in New York on September 8: “Muy busy day in my NY hotel/office. Prepping for tmrw’s shoot w. Jordin & the AI shoots coming up in Kansas City, Phoenix, and Birmingham..”

Not saying that means they couldn’t head over to Arkansas in between the cities she mentioned, but it could also mean they’re hitting it up after Birmingham? Though Phoenix seems like an odd detour– I mean I’m also wondering when they’ll get Carrie in Oklahoma– that’s a neighboring state to Missouri, too. And I wonder if they’ll get Kelly in Texas… hope so!

  17. You know, I like Archie. He is a very talented guy. But, that Elevator song is awful. Honestly, it feels like it’s geared to Kindergarteners. I just don’t get what Jive is doing with David.

I seem to be the only one that ever thinks this, but I believe they just don’t know what to do with a would-be pop artist who is as reluctant as David to be any kind of a sex object (as compared to the Jonas Brothers, who, I’d say, seem to be willing to be kiddie sex objects, for example.) I wonder if the label isn’t giving him ultra-young songs in hopes that maybe he’ll sell as a sex object for those who are sort of below the age of any overt romance.

It’s not that I see David A. himself as asexual, or something. It’s just that, to me, he comes across consistently as a very nice, very intelligent kid who’s far more interested in tons of things other than being an object of public romance and who’ll always want to keep his romantic feelings basically under wraps and focused on his own personal life exclusively.

And I don’t know that a pop label knows how to sell somebody who’s like this. I really do think that most pop music is mainly about projecting *some* kind of sexuality quite strongly toward the audience (or, if not sexuality, then some kind of rebellion or fierce masculinity or just plain nuttiness.) Projecting any of that stuff for a living doesn’t seem to me to be David’s thing, and I doubt that Jive has any idea how to sell pop music without it. I’m not convinced that you *can* sell pop music without it, although every time I say this a lot of people disagree strongly, so perhaps I’m way wrong about this!

  18. Fall Issue Extra: Harry Shum, Jr.

OTHER ASIAN!! Woot, love him, haha. Know very little about his character (Mike Chang, huh, must’ve missed that!), but he’s a good dancer, and I’m glad he’s gonna get more lines next season. Man, he’s involved in LXD as well– I’ve been meaning to check that out… I need to get on that.

  20. Hmm, is that the final mix of Elevator? If so, why does David sound like…heck, I guess. It sounds like he’s having some sort of sinus attack and the falsetto sounds bad and Archie almost never sounds bad. I kind of liked SBL because of all the Owl City-esque electronic noises but this song kind of reeks. Makes you wonder what else is on the album….

  21. Elevator hasnt gone for adds yet. I mean it was released for radio play but theres been no mention of an adds date anywhere yet.

  22. Archie has a great voice and he’s singing a song which chorus is very cringe-worthy because of just how high it is.
Not that I’m a fan, but I don’t think the song is that bad. It’s his singing in some parts that ruins it. Maybe it will work though, because the “elevator goes up and goes down” part is super catchy and overall more interesting and less like everything else the way SBL was. It really makes you wonder who decides these things when they have a guy like Archie with such a spetacular voice.

  23. I’m not convinced that you *can* sell pop music without it, although every time I say this a lot of people disagree strongly, so perhaps I’m way wrong about this!

I agree that top 40 “pop” is heavily about break-up, make-up, shack-up, booty, tits and ass, money, fame, and freak. It doesn’t seem to me to be about inspiration or meditation, education, or the greatness of mankind.

David has a lovely, lovely voice and apparently a lovely character that is every Mom’s wet dream for her daughter. Nothing wrong with this…just not what usually flies in the self-centered world of pop music.

I just think David needs to re-evaluate his audience and his relationship to his audience and move into the kind of music and the genres that sell to people who tend to “love” the selfless souls of people like David. There is a place for everyone in the music business but I truly think that someone is trying to push “square” David into a slightly askew round hole. And it doesn’t seem to be working.

  24. I have listened to AOL radio’s “new pop” station all morning and will say with conviction that Elevator is tons better than a lot of what I’m hearing. LOL.

And yes, frog, about the adds date. I’m an invested fan who pays attention and have not seen an adds date listed anywhere.

I agree with this completely. I hope that he can make some kind of adjustment because he’s so gifted musically and he seems to love it so much that I’d hate to see him have a disappointing career and be constantly pushed to do things that don’t express the real David.

  26. Well I dont think he wanted to just jump from point A to point C without the inbetween. I take it David wants to lean more towards the acoustic singer/songerwriter vibe. Or well at the least less produced, and song not just because they are “hit” material.

I kind of liked SBL because of all the Owl City-esque electronic noises but this song kind of reeks. Makes you wonder what else is on the album….

Well cheese, theres a clip of the title track out there as well and the song he performed on the MDA telethon(though apparently that was the demo version by mistake).

Looks like his upcoming setlist for some things(unclear where exactly its for) is going to have some new songs. Also hopefully new song clips this week as well. So maybe you’ll get to hear what else may be on there.

Adam Lambert´s fans have now raised half a million dollars for Donnor´s Choose charity. IMPRESSIVE!

Donor’s Choose Organization has done a great job for years helping teachers and student all across the country. I have a brother and a sister who are teachers and they both appreciate what Donor’s Choose have done. I’m glad Adam decided to Champion this cause, because they desperately need the money. I can’t tell all of you the number of times my siblings have had to use their own money for the classroom, which is a norm for teachers who work for districts who are on a tight budget. So, I want to thank Adam and his fans who contributed.

I think there are definitely songs that succeed on Top 40 that are not about sex. How about Live Like We’re Dying? And wasn’t SBL about love? Does David have sex appeal? Really depends on who you ask. I think lots of teen/tween girls would disagree and apparently, David also has a large gay following. I think we wait til he turns 21 before making a final judgment on this issue :)

What about the Plain White T’s new song, “Rhythm of Love”?? That song is getting all sorts of airplay….I just heard it on THREE different XM stations today during lunch. That song is sappy and boring (and worse than their first hit, “1, 2, 3”) but yet it’s getting a ton of airplay. SBL and Elevator are both better songs, imo.

  30. I think there is no argument that there are worse songs on radio than either of David’s singles. If PD’s actually chose songs based on strength of material, radio would be much different.

  31. I think there is no argument that there are worse songs on radio than either of David’s singles. If PD’s actually chose songs based on strength of material, radio would be much different.

I believe it is a combo of both material and artist reputation/payola.

And I just want to say as an XM subscriber is that they play lots of songs up and down the chart, which is why I love them. It not much of an indication of how well songs are doing. My fav song that they played over and over was the scouting for girls song, up there with Neon Tree’s Animal, but it just didn’t make higher on the chart because IMO they were lacking the second aspect. Plain White Ts song has really low spin count. XM might be the only ones playing it right now.

    Adam Lambert’s ‘Infinity’ Pendant
    New Adam Lambert Design Coming!
On September 25th, 2010 Pennyroyal will release the second Signature Collection design from Adam Lambert. Following last year’s success of the Eye Of Horus pendant to benefit MusiCares, Adam and Pennyroyal have decided to release a second design. This time proceeds will benefit Adam’s favorite charity, DonorsChoose.org. The design is an exact replica of Adam’s new ‘Infinity’ tattoo and will be available to order for only a few weeks starting on September 25th. All orders placed during the limited order period will be filled. After the order end date, the design will be retired. More details to follow…

30% of the sales are to go to Donor’s Choose – I think this is great!
(the % of sales info came from an email from PennyRoyal dated 9/13)

  34. I am pretty sure Plain White Ts’ new song is on Gung Ho rotation on VH1, so expect it to be around for awhile. I know Bruno Mars’ new song is Gung Ho for sure, but I hear this one just as much it seems. If it is not Gung Ho it is probably the next level.

  35. I think we wait til he turns 21 before making a final judgment on this issue

Well, I agree with both your points, but this wasn’t really what I said.

Yeah, I agree that there are a few songs the succeed on pop that aren’t about love or sex or fighting or frivolity or some such.

What I was trying to says is that I don’t think there are any actual people who succeed over a relatively long haul as pop stars. I mean, David’s had a hot song on pop. But does having one or two hot songs on pop mean that they can successfully market you there for several years or more as a pop singer? Not necessarily, in my opinion. And the difference, to me, is largely about image and what you project through your music and performance, overall, over a bunch of songs. One song? Two songs? Sure. Sellable as a pop artist? Not necessarily.

I also didn’t say or mean that David is in any way not cute, not sexual, etc.

What I said was that I get the feeling that he’s not interested in spending his life radiating hot male energy, or puppy-love energy, or romantic-song vibes toward an audience, that he probably isn’t really inclined to deliberately project these qualities most of the time as a really key part of his musical identity.

Do many people think he’s adorable and good-looking and, dare I say, sexy? Absolutely. B

ut when I look at people who are successful for more than a few songs on pop radio, I see them deliberately *projecting* certain vibes — like romantic, sexual, rebellious, hyper-male, wild-person, uber-cutesy, etc. — that I just don’t see David projecting or wanting to project as his full-time job, and I believe that history shows us that long-lasting pop stars have to project such vibes as pretty much a full-time job. If somebody doesn’t, no matter how many people think that person is handsome, I still don’t think they’ve necessarily got something that the music industry has found to be highly salable as pop.

There are formats other than pop, and I think that the image David projects and seems to want to project is most likely more salable in some other format, is all. Do we seriously think that every good looking man who is an excellent singer is cut out for big sales in Top 40? I don’t see why we would!

  36. What about the Plain White T’s new song, “Rhythm of Love”?? That song is getting all sorts of airplay….

Well, are you telling me that you don’t think Plain White Ts kind of go out of their way to project the safe-boy version of rebellion, punk, and sexiness in their performances? No matter how boring their songs may be, to me it’s kind of undeniable that they *do* go out of their way to do this — I get the definite feeling that they intend to radiate a kind of punk-y, sex-y vibe (at a very safe and low level, I admit, but there nevertheless.)

And it’s exactly this — “I’m kind of a bad boy and a sexy, romantic boy” (although I’m safe!) vibe — that I think David has zero interest in projecting, but that I think is one of the sorts of attitudes that pop requires in order to make you what’s considered a viable seller there. (And, as I said above, I’m not talking about a handful of songs but about getting a viable image for a sort of long-term star *at* *pop.*

My argument has zero to do with whether the music is any good or not! I truly think that pop is more about the image than about anything else, except that some sort of ear-worminess is recommended.

Yeah, David’s music is way better. Does he deliberately radiate any kind of really pop-friendly vibe? I don’t think so. I think he’s too serious and too disinclined to try to sell himself on stage as a macho man or as every girl in the audience’s fantasy, which I believe even Donny Osmond did, for example!
