@IdolsNow: “Jive Records sent DAVID ARCHULETA’s “Elevator” to radio at 6 PM EDT today, calling it “1st single” from new album “The Other Side Of Down.”” Interesting. So, we’ll just pretend “Something ‘Bout Love” didn’t happen?

Phil Stacey tweets his thoughts on the new judges: “So the new judge panel officially consist of Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler, and Jennifer Lopez… I think this next season of AI will work…But I know from personal experience that Lopez will be great for the contestants. She was awesome to work w on Season 6….I hope Tyler is as straightforward as Cowell. He’s certainly got the goods, but he may be worried about losing fans.”

Phil tweeted to @JLo: Don’t know if the rumors are true, but if they are congrats!! You were an awesome mentor on Season 6 and will be the prefect fit!!!

Jennifer mentored the Season 6 Top 8 for Latin Week.

Allison Iraheta: Life after American Idol

As the only female among the final four contestants of American Idol’s 2009 season, Allison Iraheta delivered an impassioned, dynamic rendition of Janis Joplin’s “Cry Baby” that even left Simon Cowell impressed. “You have complete confidence and terrific vocals, ” the typically frosty judge told the raspy, redheaded 16-year-old. Guest judge Slash raved that Iraheta “possessed a better voice than most women twice her age.”

Yet none of that was enough to secure a win for the punky singer with a fondness for 1980s pop. The following evening, Iraheta was eliminated from the competition, which eventually was won by Kris Allen.

As negotiations for new ‘American Idol’ judges drag on, Fox’s risks increase

Remember in college when you’d wait until the last minute to crank out a term paper even though the assignment had been given to you months earlier?
That appears to be the approach Fox and the producers of “American Idol” — 19 Entertainment and FremantleMedia — are taking when it comes to overhauling the nation’s No.1 television show. After all, it was no secret that there were going to be big holes to fill on the program. Simon Cowell announced last January that he was leaving as the head judge of “American Idol” to launch a U.S. version of his hit UK show “The X Factor.” Then the network said goodbye to Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi.

  1. I’m not even gonna pretend to know what Jive is doing. I just want my music.

Though I suppose if RCA can push FYE under the rug, so can Jive. They just better push the song.

  2. LOL at Jive. Seriously???

But does this mean that we can just forget all about The Truth and have Jive release Kris’s 2nd single now? :)

  3. Revisionist history is a great thing. Kris’ No Boundaries wasn’t ever released and an instant failure, Adam’s FYE was just a blip, and David’s SBL was just a taster and not the whole enchilada.

Really and truly though…who really cares. Let’s just hope, like Kris and Adam that this song can be a multi-platinum seller for David.

  4. Jive is following the RCA playbook. Maybe this means that the “first” single will get more promo than that other song. ;)

  5. if the radio didn’t play SBL i doubt they’re gonna play Elevator. unless somebody does something drastic. as has been discussed here before, TPTB in radio favor the same people, most of them nowhere near as talented as David.

  6. I can see trying to tell the general public its the 1st single, since SBL didn’t get a ton of airplay — but the radio station PDs know better. It’ll be interesting to see how the stations introduce “Elevator”

  7. LOL

    jambajim
@AdamLambert You’re currently serenading me at the LAX Chili’s2Go with “No Boundaries.” Thank you, sir. And bwaaaahahaha this effing song.about 1 hour ago

I don’t know about RCA, I’ve never heard them say that FYE wasn’t the first single. Some fans say it, though and they are swiftly reminded that they’re wrong. Adam references FYE as his first single in interviews, so we’ll see. The important thing is for Elevator to get a great push from Jive and pave the way for album sales. I’m not sure about Elevator, I hope the production has improved since that WPRO version.

  8. Wonder why Jive didn’t try this with Allison’s singles?

I think you only get a first single two times. Having one three times is probably overkill.

  9. Really and truly though…who really cares. Let’s just hope, like Kris and Adam that this song can be a multi-platinum seller for David.

Wait, i dont remember them having multi-platinum singles?

  10. Wait, i dont remember them having multi-platinum singles?

Looking at the future, like Jive and their reference on the album “featuring hit single Something Bout Love”.

On a serious note, I don’t think it matters if it’s first or second oe third, lets just hope Jive cares to push it.
the little song does have a catchy chorus. I like it more than Something Love.

  11. Runs in …. what! Elevator is going to be David’s first single? OK. That works for me. I want to hear the final mix. ;)

  12. Second is the new first… But the song still sucks.

Kris doesn’t need a new first, just a better second. :-)

  13. What are the people at Jive smoking? Tons of WTF decisions being made recently, at least concerning the Idols…..

  14. Also, ‘Tasia looks so good in that single photo! Now, if she could just get the same team who does the photo shoots to style her for appearances, we’d be cooking with gas.

Second is the new first… But the song still sucks.

SBL was bland, Elevator is worse, it sounds like something they should play on Nick Jr.

  16. I love SBL (and it’d best be on the physical CD for drive music) but I also love Elevator and think it might be hookier. Can’t get that chorus outta my head.

  17. Well, miranda cosgrove is a nick kid, her song is like on there a lot, she gets airplay, so hey, thanks for the well wishes.

  18. Diana Degarmo tweets: “NEWS ALERT!!! I am singing WITH @DOLLY_PARTON on the GRAND OLE OPRY on SATURDAY NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!! I think I just died and went to heaven!!!”

*chuckle* She is pretty excited about singing with Dolly. That’s quite an honor to sing on the Grand Ole Opry. Way to go, Diana! :)

  19. I liked SBL better than Elevator but the way the music industry is maybe Elevator will be a big hit. I want to hear the final mix. If Jive really pushes it then it will do well. I just hope his album does well and he gets a few hit songs on it.

  20. Jive is crazy :( so the cover art for SBL, the video and the official annoucement of the song like a single never happened? LOL

Interesting , but i guess is some kind of strategy anyway lol, to redo their promo work for a new public view :)

  21. What a fantastic, emotional and intense performance by Crystal! And how cool is it to see Michael Franti sitting in a corner and taking it in. I admire Michael Franti for being so humble and down to earth, without a trace of superstar ego. A man who practices what he sings about. How lucky for Crystal to make friends with him. I´m sure we´ll see lots of teamwork from them in the future.

  22. If Jive really pushes it then it will do well.

They gonna do their work this time, i’m sure .

  23. FROGCOOKE, it drives me crazy that miranda cosgrove has a smash hit on the radio. nothing against her but she is not a SINGER. she’s a disney-manufactured product. she’s good at what she does but it’s hard for me to hear her song getting airplay and David with the gorgeous voice gets next to nothing.

  24. Uggh I do not like “Elevator” :( Jive at the least better push the crap out of it. Archie is one of their better sellers so he certainly deserves it. I really thought SBL was gonna be a Top 10 smash..

  25. I don’t recall if RCA was saying that WWFM was Adam’s first single. If they did, they’re smoking the same crack that Jive is now. Adam at least, always refers to WWFM as the second single, so he at least is reality based.

But I must to admit, I do find it funny that Jive is apparently being as revionist and wanky as some nutty fan on a board. That is lolarious.

Well good luck to Archie on his second single. I sitll haven’t heard it, but hope it does well for his sake.

  26. If Jive really pushes it then it will do well.

They gonna do their work this time, i’m sure .

Jive pushing something, doesn’t guarantee success. They, and every other label, wishes it were that easy. And not like Jive didn’t make a MV for this song right away. And put it to adds. I think Archie got some iTunes banners? May be? And timing?. Anyhew, not like Jive hasn’t tried with other songs from other AI and non AI artists, to push them, and the songs didn’t catch on. For whatever reason. It’s a crapshoot.

But by the MV alone, I don’t think that Jive did nothing to promote SBL. But as for appearances and such beyond the ones he’s gotten in general, but to promote Elevator…guess we’ll see.

  27. There was no iTunes promotion for SBL that I can remember. He got some banners for the album preorder though.

  28. Also, ‘Tasia looks so good in that single photo! Now, if she could just get the same team who does the photo shoots to style her for appearances, we’d be cooking with gas.

    Yep.

    Yep.

If people never heard the song, it’s like it never existed anyway.

    Yep.

  29. I don’t recall if RCA was saying that WWFM was Adam’s first single. If they did, they’re smoking the same crack that Jive is now.

I think you’re right. I think it was just some Adam fans who refused to believe the FYE was the first single because it flopped. RCA was quick to put out another single but didn’t pretend the first one didn’t exist (unlike Jive.)

Of course it’s hard to pretend a song doesn’t exist when the artist did it on the AMAs and they did a video. No one knows about Archie’s single so this could be mission accomplished.

Well, miranda cosgrove is a nick kid, her song is like on there a lot, she gets airplay, so hey, thanks for the well wishes.

Your welcome, it’s going to take more than Nick Jr. to make that song a hit.

  31. Your welcome, it’s going to take more than Nick Jr. to make that song a hit.

Well good news, im not really counting on anything. ha. so if it does anything, its more than im expecting. :P

  32. I can see trying to tell the general public its the 1st single, since SBL didn’t get a ton of airplay — but the radio station PDs know better. It’ll be interesting to see how the stations introduce “Elevator”

Maybe the PD’s like the song and have given them feedback???

Jive pushing something, doesn’t guarantee success.

Yes, but if the radio never plays it, it will certainly not succeed. It is sort of like have the most fantastic quarterback but not having a good receiver to catch his passes.

  33. Hehe, a bit OT, but I’m watching Ru Paul’s Drag U, and Ru just said the phrase “More feathers and sequins than a sleepover at Adam Lambert’s house”. That tickled me.

  34. Nope, RCA never pretended FYE didn’t exist. It would be kinda dumb to do so. I mean, they licensed it for use by the E! network, FoxAsia and Showtime where it was used to promo shows. It did really well on radio in Canada and sold platinum there and gold in New Zealand. It’s the new single in Australia too and went for adds last week and did well. It has sold over 300K here and the music video still makes its way into the Top 200 music videos sold on Itunes every couple of days.

FYE wasn’t a hit here in the US and it didn’t do well in the UK and it definitely did not do well on the radio, but there’s no way RCA could ignore it even if they wanted to. Adam certainly doesn’t ignore it in interviews.

As far as SBL, maybe they’ll do a re-release on it at a later date. The video got made, it premiered on Vevo and got write-ups in several websites and I think on Billboard’s site. He did radio promo for it, didn’t he? Nothing to say they can’t do a rerelease of it if Elevator is a hit.

  35. FYE wasn’t a hit here in the US

Right. It flopped in the US so they quickly released another single which became a hit. But they didn’t claim it never existed unlike Jive.
So I was wrong to compare RCA to Jive.

Really cool technical article about Adam’s tour, the tight budget, varied venues and Adam’s involvement. One cool little tidbit, they talk about rumblings of another tour early next year. May be why RCA is pushing for a spring/early summer release. My question — solo or with someone??

I don’t see how there can be another another tour till summer, especially if he’s been given a deadline to get the new album recorded by the end of Spring. But I remember reading somewhere that Adam might go back on tour after the holidays and spend all of January on the road. Who knows what he’s going to do. He might spend part of December recording, then go out on tour for January and come back and finish the album and then go back on tour in June. Whatever RCA and Adam decide to do about the new album and tour date for next year, it’s certainly never boring following Adam’s adventures.

    hahaha

  38. Jive is just too funny. They think that Archuleta’s song with a youtube that is just about to hit 3million views is not noticed by some people? I agree, though, that since it was almost not heard on radio, that most people don’t even know about it unless you are a hard-core fan and so it has never been given a proper chance to get into top 40. Just a little effort by jive would have moved it from #48 or whatever, into the top 40 and more radio play. What a waste. Loved that song. Of course, like some other artists, they could play both his songs (or every song!)

  39. Awww sweet that Matt and Anoop are gonna have a concert together!

    MANOOP!

  40. Good for Diana. The Grand Ole Opry is a big deal. I don’t blame her for being almost beside herself with excitement. On top of that she’s Dolly Parton’s special guest and gets to perform a duet with her!

  41. BRIDGETTE12 and FROGCOOKE are you talkin about “kissin you”? that song is all over the radio, even on multiple Sirious Radio stations. i can’t get away from it. maybe you guys are talkin bout a different song…

  42. oh i gotcha now FROGCOOKE. that’s what i get for multitasking. went right over my head.

  43. LOL at Jive. Seriously???

But does this mean that we can just forget all about The Truth and have Jive release Kris’s 2nd single now?

    good one girlygirl! :)

  44. i just read that SBL has been #1 on 19 different radio stations in Indonesia for weeks. boy are they gonna be surprised when they find out it never existed as a single.

  45. are you purposely trying to confuse me at this point FROGCOOKE?! haha. either way good for David. he’s got the last laugh.

  46. OMG Canada loves Adam….on SYTYCD Canada Cloie and Jonathan danced to If I had YOu. Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

  47. Oh well on the Manoop concert. At least there is a mention that there might be one in the future. It was a fun thought.

  48. Right. It flopped in the US so they quickly released another single which became a hit. But they didn’t claim it never existed unlike Jive.
So I was wrong to compare RCA to Jive.

In fairness, FYE got a “slightly” more high profile release than SBL. It closed a little show called the American Music Awards and the performance attracted some media attention :). There’s no way that RCA could bury FYE. SBL is quite different. Other than an afternoon performance on Arthur Ashe Kid’s Day, it was never performed on TV. The video was never played on VH1 or MTV (despite JambaJim’s incorrect info. that it would be played after some Sony names are blurred out). David did not appear on any of the talk shows or morning shows to promote it. Its audience impression never topped 1 million. It did not even get played on Radio Disney, which plays ANYTHING Idol related. Come to think of it, Jive can plausibly deny that SBL was David’s first single. They certainly never gave it the promotion a first single deserves.

  49. This whole business about first single or not is just junk for fans to argue about.

However, I just listened to Elevator. Woof. What a dog of a song. Sorry Archie fans. That might be the worst single released by an Idol artist of all time. It sounds like it belongs on Sesame Street.

  50. LOL PLausible Deniability.

lol anytime i see that, i get that scene from independence day in my head.

  51. Y’all know, its not actually about elevators right?

    Elevator Goes Up
    Elevator Goes Down

Even if it isn’t about elevators per se, it really would be a great tool to teach 2 year olds how elevators work.

  52. R.I.P. SBL

To bad, david is so talented, why cant he get the promo he deserves,i be SHOCKED if elevator its played outside 107.9 utah, and if it becomes a hit i will be SHOCKEDDDD!!
    Hope for the best

  53. well wpro plays it some too, wxlk plays it, and another station, wdjx gave it a spin tonight too. Actually kudd(107.9) only hopped on the train tonight, but hey… thats only a few spins. lol

it will do what ever it does. either way, i’ll have my cd. So I win.

  54. it will do what ever it does. either way, i’ll have my cd. So I win.

You speak wisdom right here, frogcooke. This should be the mantra of all Idol uberfans. I love the numbers, but why fret? It will do what it does.

Running off to give Elevator a listen.

  55. If I remember correctly, Danny Gokey released a first single that really went nowhere, and then they quickly released MBD as a single?

  56. Running off to give Elevator a listen.

The one on youtube is a lq, jsyk. haha. The one I heard on kudd today sounded better to me. Hard to say if it was the new mix, or just because they speed songs up, but it sounded better than that wpro rip.

I’m chill about the numbers things. I figure if it hits, it’ll hit, if it doesnt, it doesnt. Not much we can do about it.

  57. Does this mean that maybe Sony is picking off the Idols or something? It’s like they just said “f*ck it” and don’t care either way! Dropping Allison, lame singles from Archie and Kris, NOTHING from Cook. It’s ridiculous.

  58. If I remember correctly, Danny Gokey released a first single that really went nowhere, and then they quickly released MBD as a single?

It’s Only was intended as the first single. It was quickly released so it could be announced at the CMA interview session; but DJs there liked My Best Days Are Ahead of Me better so it was switched within a week. It was never an official single- didn’t go for adds and was never for sale.

  59. To bad, david is so talented, why cant he get the promo he deserves,i be

Promo?, with his voice, how hard can be to give him a good good song like single?, is really that hard Jive? seriously ! :/

It will be a miracle if Elevator sold more than SBL, which was a pretty bland song. Elevator is just a ghastly song. I don’t know who wrote it, but they should retire from the songwriting business. If these two songs reflect what’s on Archie’s album, he’s in serious trouble.

  61. FYE wasn’t a hit here in the US and it didn’t do well in the UK and it definitely did not do well on the radio, but there’s no way RCA could ignore it even if they wanted to. Adam certainly doesn’t ignore it in interviews.

From what I’ve been reading, David had a big hand in writing and creating this album. Maybe that was Jive’s mistake and if that’s the case the blame also partially falls on David if the songs aren’t appealing to Top 40.

  63. Interesting. So, we’ll just pretend “Something ‘Bout Love” didn’t happen?

When was its add date? I was pretty busy in August and I remember people thought it was going for adds the first week in August, but then it didn’t. Did it ever get one?

My rule: If it gets an add date, it’s definitely a single.

From what I’ve been reading, David had a big hand in writing and creating this album. Maybe that was Jive’s mistake and if that’s the case the blame also partially falls on David if the songs aren’t appealing to Top 40.

I understand Idol has produced a lot of self proclaimed singer/songwriters, but just because they think they can write a song, doesn’t mean that they should. Some people are better at singing than writing songs. There are people in the music business that are paid to write good songs. If David had a hand in writing SBL and Elevator, he should rethink his so call venture into songwriting.

  65. Maybe that was Jive’s mistake and if that’s the case the blame also partially falls on David if the songs aren’t appealing to Top 40.

Yep, cause we saw how great Jive’s first effort was, with all of those top 40 hit singles…..oh wait, not so much. This idea that it’s easy to climb the charts is debunked on the regular, I don’t know why we just don’t concede that it’s not so easy, and frankly does not always have anything to do with the quality of the song, or the artist. It doesn’t always have to do with banner adds or payola either. Sometimes songs, good songs just don’t make it. And some times crap does.

  66. Interesting. So, we’ll just pretend “Something ‘Bout Love” didn’t happen?

Never mind whether the fans and the internet crowd think, whether they call SBL a flop or a non-single, it won’t make or break his career. But I wonder how the PDs will react to Elevator being declared first single. Could they have forgotten SBL and be fooled? Or is it going to play against the song?

  67. Archie’s greatest strength may end up being his weakness where top 40 is concerned. He is very, very adament about the lyrics to his songs….won’t touch any “swear” words, sexual conotation, double entendres, or do songs that he considers too old for himself.

He is really into uplifting songs and message songs and feel good songs…great for Disney and mellow AC…doesn’t always seem to work in the cynical world of Top 40.

Sometimes I just think Archie is a very old soul in a young body and it oftentimes seems difficult for him to adjust to a world that is a lot more “worldly” than the universe he has created around himself. I’m not knocking his obvious devotion to his standards and admire his sticktuitiveness…but his attitude that so thrills his fans is often times a hard pill to swallow for many peeps who are a bit more base than David is.

I truly believe his career will be very Donny Osmandish…and that isn’t all bad. There is a very lucrative audience out there who likes the type of stuff David does…just not the typical Top 40 listener.

  68. “Jive Records sent DAVID ARCHULETA’s “Elevator” to radio at 6 PM EDT today, calling it “1st single” from new album “The Other Side Of Down.”” –that’s pretty funny. Whatever, Jive!

I don’t expect anything from Jive. They can put out half of the cd if they wanted. David and the rest of the idols w/ Jive will have to work on their own promotion (along w/ their mgmt teams) and see where they end up. This will be an interesting release, but as an Archie fan I won’t be disappointed.

At least everyone’s got something to bicker about until the new season of idol starts. LOL ;)

I swear.. I haven’t seen such heated remarks since the Allen and Lambert fans were duking it out.

  69. Wishing Diana the best at the Grand Ole Opry. What great news that she is Dolly’s guest. I hope the National Tour of the musical will also be successful.

  70. “I understand Idol has produced a lot of self proclaimed singer/songwriters, but just because they think they can write a song, doesn’t mean that they should.” — I don’t think Kara Dioguardi got that memo. *cough* No Boundaries *cough*

Remember the song “Don’t Worry Be Happy?” See.. silly songs can be huge hits. (I never really cared for the song.. but dang if that didn’t get the crap played out of it!) I think “out of the ordinary” songs can be hits if the timing is right.

  71. All I care about is that Archuleta continues to sing and tour and makes enough money to have a career in music. I listen to some of his Christmas from the Heart songs all the time in my car (and I am a person who never listens to Christmas music except for a couple days before Christmas). But his voice on some of those songs (including Ave Maria) is so soothing that I forget that they are Christmas songs. He is gaining respect in the music industry day by day (hit or no hit) and in 10 and 20 years, I expect for him to continue in the business. It’s fun to watch how it all unfolds over time for all those who have come off of Idol and it takes a huge amount of work on their part. It is too bad that each one is judged by the “superstars” of the industry standards when almost none of the “Idols” have the backing that many of those “superstars” have.

  72. I really enjoyed that Crystal Bowersox video. Thank you MJ! For me, Crystal and Kris Allen are striking when they are stripped down to acoustic sets. Fantastic!

It will be a shame when Idol retires. I can’t stand the majority of the singers, but Idol has certainly opened some doors to a lot of people that would have never seen the light of day.

  73. Hmm so last week Lee shot footage for Idol, and according to this persons Twitter it looks like all the winners are doing the same thing. She filmed Lee and Jordin already, DC in Blue Springs tomorrow..

“I understand Idol has produced a lot of self proclaimed singer/songwriters, but just because they think they can write a song, doesn’t mean that they should.” — I don’t think Kara Dioguardi got that memo. *cough* No Boundaries *cough*

I know the poor woman will never live down the mess that was No Boundaries but Kara wrote lots of legitimate hit songs before NB and she’s written them after. Even the biggest hot hitmakers of today have wrote their share of flops.

  74. Random moment, but I’m really loving this Cher impersonation by Archie (during a radio interview). If you’re intersted you can skip to 16:15 on the video to catch the impersonation. http://www.vimeo.com/14928813

I love Cher! It just cracks me up that Archie did such a great impersonation of her. I didn’t think he’d do it. Too funny!

  75. Not to excuse Kara from that mess but 3 other people wrote No Boundaries and they never get called out for it. lol.

I’m really interested to hear how Idol plans to use this footage of assuming all their winners. Seems like some great documentary pieces.

  76. “I know the poor woman will never live down the mess that was No Boundaries but Kara wrote lots of legitimate hit songs before NB and she’s written them after. Even the biggest hot hitmakers of today have wrote their share of flops.”

Yep! You can’t write hits 100% of the time. How are you going to get better or improve if you don’t try, right?

I think I feel more for the people that had to sing that No Boundaries song. I think, David Cook got the best coronation song. Yes, it’s not something that would be mainstream, but that magic rainbow really worked for him. I still don’t mind hearing it on the radio and the DJ’s do play it. lol Cook did a great job with that song!

  77. “Not to excuse Kara from that mess but 3 other people wrote No Boundaries and they never get called out for it.”

–I didn’t realize so many ppl were in on that. LOL.. That was one craptastic song!

  78. Guess I’m gonna be in the minority here when I say I actually LIKE Elevator. But everyone has different taste in music.

Not sure what Jive is doing with the whole “1st single” business but if it gives a chance for David’s music to be played more on radio then go for it. SBL is still out so maybe it can at least keep the stations it’s already on and then they can maybe pick up stations with Elevator. It’s certainly not unheard of for an artist to have more than one song out at a time.

My guess is they saw that SBL was going nowhere fast and figured best not to beat a dead horse. Whether that was a good decision or not — whether they should have kept pushing SBL as the single or not — I have no idea. I’m no industry expert.

I guess only time (and the buying public) will tell whether David’s music will be successful on radio today. Not that anyone probably cares lol but I will say this: given what’s hot now on radio, I’m not gonna hold my breath. I will HOPE that people want something a little different and give this a chance but then I’ll go listen to my CDs & mp3s because I don’t wanna hear that crap on the radio anyway.

  79. I just read that an Idol (who I thought was doing fine) charges fans $200 for meet and greets. I have mixed feelings about this and just wonder if it’s common practice.

I know Taylor Hicks did this while he was touring with Grease but any other examples of Idols or non Idols charging fans to meet them? I’m not talking about meet and greets arranged by radio stations for promotion.

Why would you claim you read such a thing, and not say who?
Can’t believe eveything you read. There are people that have sold their own meet & greets, then after checking in, they then give it to the person who bought it from them.
Be careful who you try to make look negative. Be prepared to do your own research. You’re just stirring the pot, so to speak.

Hm. Maybe I’m confused by what you’re considering as odd about charging for a meet & greet. Are you thinking of this as different than “VIP package” type thing? Because I know of plenty of artists who do that. And essentially you are paying for a meet and greet there. I mean, you could buy pretty much those same tickets w/o the meet & greet for a fraction of the cost.

I’ll speak to the only one I know about personally since I bought it — David Archuleta had VIP packages for his summer tour and his Christmas tour. You got a ticket to the show guaranteed within a certain distance of the stage, a M&G (with varying added bonuses such as soundcheck or private show with David), a picture with David, a tshirt, and other little collectibles. It was handled through a company who does those type of packages for lots of big artists. They were $195 per package.

But maybe I’m confused as to what you are asking? Because VIP packages are not some secret — you must be referring to something different?

  82. I’m talking about something similiar to VIP packages. You meet the artist and get a photo with them. I’m not sure if you also get a ticket to the show. I never said this info was super sekret. I just wondered if it was common practice.

I don’t think paying a premium price for a good seat and an opportunity to meet someone is a bad thing. My mixed feelings come from the fact that some OTT Idols fans often will pay any amount to be near their “idol.”

  83. Think it is pretty common practice. Not unusual for stars at all levels of fame (example: Sara Brightman commands several hundred for meet and greet passes and good seats).

I’m confused about David’s single releases, as SBL is finally playing on several stations where I’m at. I heard Elevator once also and was surprised it fit in on radio. Wasn’t a big fan at first, but it blends with the Sara Barielles/Imogene Heap type music.

Wishing Archie the best with his album. Hope to to see good results.

This is a very common practice. Carrie and Daughtry also offers VIP packages. The prices varies depending on what you are offering with the package. As for OTT idol fans willing to pay any amount, I think you need to include most OTT non idol fans with that also. A lot artists have VIP packages and they are a lot more than $195.

  85. Re the meet and greet question, I can’t comment on whether it is a common practice for idols specifically but it is a common practice for artists generally. These things are often set up through their fan clubs. Very common practice

  86. Those morons at Jive-well,SBL,was released to itunes, was bubbling under the Billboard Hot 100,at one point, cracked Top 50 on Billboard Pop 50-that’s a single. They are WASTING great talent.UMG is the place to be,but unfortunately ,only Alex Lambert will likely benefit from that.Poor David-he’s very cute, easy to market, excellent voice, and Jive tosses him poor song ,after poor song.I’m sure,at this point, there will be another “first single” released come Halloween…

Does this mean that maybe Sony is picking off the Idols or something? It’s like they just said “f*ck it” and don’t care either way! Dropping Allison, lame singles from Archie and Kris, NOTHING from Cook. It’s ridiculous.

In my mind, it is a possibility, but time will tell.

I totally agree. SBL is a nice song, but I think it’s way too middle of the road for CHR radio. I understand it’s hard to get an appropriate song for David that would be interesting enough for CHR radio. I think “Crush” was the right combination, but even that song had a novelty factor, because David was fresh off AI and it was his first single.

Agreed. I know it’s important to some singers to sing the songs they wrote or co-wrote, but sometimes I think it’s just better to leave songwriting to the professionals. The best solution would be to get half of the songs for the album from the professional songwriters and let the singer write the other half.

I don’t know what Jive’s plans are… I’m afraid they see David as a short term investment. He was very popular when he came off AI and they obviously made money off him. But I don’t think he has the potential to be a successful pop singer. He is talented, but he is also different. I think they know they can’t change him and his appeal. So they will keep him for as long as he makes them money…

  89. Those morons at Jive-

How about the morons at the radio stations that didn’t add the song? The song had the same start as Daughtry’s and Allen’s. It hit a standstill because no new stations added it, and the ones that did stopped playing it. I fail to see how that is jives fault. The song was just not good enough for radio, IMHO.

I don’t think Elevator is going to be any better but you never know what the public in general is going to like.

  90. When was its add date? I was pretty busy in August and I remember people thought it was going for adds the first week in August, but then it didn’t. Did it ever get one?

My rule: If it gets an add date, it’s definitely a single.

The only date listed for it was on FMQB, it never was listed on all access for an adds date. Which we were all griping about. lol

  91. Re: David A’s “Elevator” — sometimes, a quirky song hits on top 40 (Fireflies by Owl City, I’m Yours by Jason Mraz) and when they do, I enjoy them even amidst and usually more than the shawty-bumpin’-and-grindin’-in-da-club songs that have become run of the mill on top 40. (Sex and sexuality are indeed a part of life, but they are not all of life and I don’t know why genre music can’t reflect more of who we are.) Putting this song out there might be a risk, but it’s a bold move that this fan is liking. And I’ve said this before, but repetition happens on Idol blogs so I’ll repeat: the song grew on me in a big way — so stuck in my head. I like the metaphor and also the slight funkiness in the lyrics.

    I’m excited about this album.

Yeah, I think the labels just try to do their best with what they are given. These labels get singers from a reality show with a fanbase, but they have to try and sell them to the audience outside the bubble. They know what usually works in a certain genre and they try to follow that. But sometime it just doesn’t work out.

  93. the song grew on me in a big way — so stuck in my head. I like the metaphor and also the slight funkiness in the lyrics.

There in lies the problem for all the “slow growing” songs, not just David’s. Pop isn’t willing to spin and spin a song to get people to like it. A song has 30-40 seconds to hook in the listener or they are switching stations. So if its not working, no matter the reputation of the artist or the ‘payola’, the PD won’t spin it. I don’t know what the answer is..

  94. VIP packages that include a meet and greet are very common. Of the idols, I know that Carrie Underwood, Daughtry and Adam offer them on their fan club websites for concerts. Daughtry and Adam both use groundcontrol for their fan websites, but I believe Daughtry only uses his for the VIP meet and greet concert sales. All three of them still do regular free meet and greets arranged by radio stations etc. Kelly may also have something similar. I’m not sure about Kelly, so I didn’t include her.

Outside of Idol it’s a very common practice. The tween acts like the Jonas Brothers and Justin Bieber offer them. In fact, bieber had a VIP package for his concert in NY that was like 2k and they sold out. Bon Jovi sells VIP packages for over $1800 dollars. There was a NY times article on how common it is these days. I’ll try to find. Maybe you’re just out of the concert loop?

Ah, found the NY times article. Based on this, your concern for the poor idol fan is probably unnecessary, JPFan. Wow, look at those prices for non-AI acts!

  95. I really hope that Jive will promote this single for David. I don’t know why they didn’t do more for his first single.
I don’t know if Elevator is the best song they could have chosen or not because I don’t know what others songs on his album sounds like’ but I hope that maybe with David they did chose the right song this time.

  96. I think I’m out of the fan club loop (which is I guess where you buy the VIP Packages). Wow, I pity the parents who have to come up with 2K so the little princess can meet Bieber.

I do worry about Idol fans because back in the day they were famous for draining the retirement fund to stalk follow their guy around the nation. I know all fans do this but Idol fans are usually closer to retirement age than Bieber fans. ;)

  97. Wow, I pity the parents who have to come up with 2K so the little princess can meet Bieber.

LOL Anyone willing to pay 2K deserves to be parted from their money. ;)

  98. Danny Gokey offers Meet & Greets for most of his concerts.

They are $25 which is quite reasonable, IMO. All the proceeds go toward his charitable foundation, Sophias Heart Foundation.

They take place before concerts, you get an autograph, to say a few words with him and your picture with him.

He also signs autographs after every concert for every single person who wants one. The lines are very long, but that one they move through quickly; no pictures just a quick hi and autograph.

Meet & greets can be obtained at http://www.sophiasheart.org under “Take Action”

  99. Awesome performance of Farmer’s Daughter…thanks so much, MJ! Has any finalist ever dumped the AI stigma faster than Crystal? Franti appearing in the background, and Crystal just fits right in like a glove.

    Incredible. Just incredible…

  100. I really hope that Jive will promote this single for David. I don’t know why they didn’t do more for his first single.

David’s album and single(s) seriously need better promotion. He’s currently doing a lot of radio station promos but, imho, they are “small potatoes” and are useless if the radio stations aren’t playing his songs. He needs a lot bigger gigs for the CD release…like morning shows such as GMA or Today, Regis & Kelly, The View etc. as well as Leno, Letterman or Kimmel. I don’t understand why he’s not getting this type of promotion from Jive. It’s so frustrating that you see garbage like Lady Gaga and Beaver getting good promo but not David when he is 100 times more talented.

  101. He needs a lot bigger gigs for the CD release…like morning shows such as GMA or Today, Regis & Kelly, The View etc. as well as Leno, Letterman or Kimmel. I don’t understand why he’s not getting this type of promotion from Jive.

Those appearances are for the week of his album’s release and after. And it’s management’s job to get those appearances, not Jive’s.

The question right now is, does David have any radio friendly songs on his new album that TOP 40 radio would be willing to play? If he has, then it’s label’s job to push the single to the radio.

  102. I really hope that Jive will promote this single for David. I don’t know why they didn’t do more for his first single.

Irregardless of whose job it is….the CD comes out in THREE weeks and as far as I’m aware, there are no bookings for these types of appearances for David!!

  103. Some of those Bon Jovi fans didn’t seem all that young, but I think If the fans have gotten to retirement age, I think they’re old enough to make their own decisions don’t you? Sorry, but when I get to retirement age I hope I’m still wanting to go to concerts and spend my money on things I enjoy rather than in what well meaning people think I should spend it on. Let the well meaning ones spend their own money in what they think is proper.
