Carly Smithson calls new We Are the Fallen single “the definition of everything I hoped to achieve”

Carly Smithson says the members We Are the Fallen knew, almost from the moment they recorded it, that Tear the World Down would be a single.

“This song is the definition of everything I hoped to achieve after American Idol, ” says Carly, the group’s lead singer. “For the last 10 years, I have always wanted to be a part of a song that has this kind of powerful feeling to it.”

The single version of Tear the World Down, which will be released Oct. 12, is the follow-up to the group’s first single, Bury Me Alive. That track peaked at No. 27 on USA TODAY’s Active Rock chart.

At the MDA Telethon, one of the stars of the show is someone you never see

Just before Charo is introduced, everyone in the audience of 350 in the decked-out South Point showroom cheerfully shakes their maracas.

But one person does not have any maracas. Jerry Lewis sits onstage, maraca-less.

Not for long, though. Debbie Williams surveys the scene and notices the host of the “MDA Labor Day Telethon” is not properly outfitted. She gives the audience a quick once-over, then moves swiftly over to Lewis’ wife, Sam, one person who would not mind surrendering one of her props for the cause. Williams hustles back to Lewis, hands the grateful host a green maraca and backpedals out of the shot.

  1. “Fever” will be Adam’s next single in New Zealand.

Gotta love New Zealand! So happy to hear this….. :)

  2. Sony New Zealand tweeted today that Adam Lambert will be heading their for some shows

As someone who relishes the editing time as it is fairly long, though curses it’s not indefinite, let me just say “there,” not “their.”

And hmmmm, interesting choice for next NZ single.

I still hope if Adam gets another US single, that it’s “Sleepwalker.” “Fever,” for NZ? coolio for them, I guess. Hope it does well and of course.

  3. I can’t believe a person has to go to NewZealand to hear “Fever” on the radio.

Trusts Stadium – anyone know how big?

Apparently a small ‘stadium’ upwards of 5k capacity.

ETA: Thats cool about Tim. I’m interested to hear what kind of music he might put out.

I can’t believe a person has to go to NewZealand to hear “Fever” on the radio.

I’ll take the flip side of this.. thankfully there are places in the world where you CAN hear Fever.

  6. Does Gina’s tweet mean Crystal isn’t being managed by 19? I thought they all were?

  7. Wow, New Zealand is going to get fever. This looks to be a pretty interesting international tour. I can’t wait for the concert videos and his televised appearances from all over the world. Hopefully he will make a good impression and gain new fans, especially with the new album coming out next Spring. Glad RCA let him do a international tour.

  8. That is fabulous news about FEVER for NZ! I hope it’s a smash! And super news about the live Tour DVD. NZ deserves this – Adam has so much support there.

It’s just amazing to me (and more than a little sad) that Fever has to be debuted outside of the US. Jeez.

    But still great news! :)

  9. Does Gina’s tweet mean Crystal isn’t being managed by 19? I thought they all were?

I’m assuming no, hehe. 19 has the first option, but sometimes they pass. All the Idols record for 19R, though. This must mean that Lee will be the only Season 9 Idol managed by 19, since Casey’s management hasn’t yet been announced. Rumor is that a couple of other firms are interested in him.

  10. Could anyone remember if there was/were any idol alums that had their first international tour that covered Asia and Europe as early as Adam?

  11. This is Gina Orr’s tweet:
Hey tweeters, I’m no longer at 19…have left to start my own company and manage @crystalbowersox

  12. Ya for New Zealand concert !!!

I got a mix feeling about ‘fever’ get released as a single. I like ‘fever’, I think it could be his biggest radio hit as it sounds. But I think ‘sleepwalker’ is the one that you can listen for years…. And it appeals young, older, male and female.

It just me, anyway, I want both to get released as singles, I am greedy.

  13. I love sw too, but it isn’t a summer single.

On another note it I’ll be interesting to see how crystal/ Orr situation will play out. I guess she’ll get her spring release.

  14. In the previous headline thread there was a discussion about Allison’s future and I wanted to express my opinion.

A lot of Allison’s appeal was her personality that came out in her relationship with Adam and Kris, “Kradison.” She has an amazing voice, but when people lumped those three together casting her as the little sister, interest and drama were born – even to the point of creating all kinds of fan fiction. Even though she was appreciated, Allison was in her idol big brothers’ shadows without a large distinguishable fanbase of her own. Fans loved Kradison, but there was no Kradison music to purchase or play on the radio.

Even though she has been touring with Adam, it is obvious that he has his own individual goals just as Kris has, and Allison has been left behind. She doesn’t fit the Disney profile and there are already enough bad girls out there who are lone artists.

Her duet of The Scientist with Kris was awesome as was her duet with Adam. She clearly shines when she is in the “little sister” role, even the pushy little sister (I’ll never forget her pushing Kris’ microphone out of his hand on the S8 AI tour because he was so sick and she wanted him to save his voice).

I think she should form a band (or be taken into an existing band) but not be the lead singer. The leads should be a couple of hot guys she could relate to in the way she related to Adam and Kris – with the guys even having strong personalities/differences that create interest. They take the lead and she sings with them as the little sister with the amazing voice – for the moment. Later as they gain acknowledgement and a fanbase, and as she gets older, she could take more of the lead, but that would be a natural progression. Such a band could easily build a fanbase because all teen girls would want to BE her, singing and touring with hot guys, just like they wanted to be her when she was on AI because of her relationship with Adam and Kris.

If she worked this angle, becoming part of a group similar to Kradison that teenagers could fall in love with, we could see a lot of her in the future. As I said, she has an amazing voice, but the only Allison music I have on my iPod is an Mp3 of her duet with Kris. Blending her voice with two male leads would be awesome. I would buy it.

  15. Oh wow they’re moving some of Adam’s Australia shows to bigger venues due to the demand! And yay all those sad teens on twitter will be so happy, the new venues include under 18’s!

Could anyone remember if there was/were any idol alums that had their first international tour that covered Asia and Europe as early as Adam?

    so far….. nope… only Adam :D

  17. Masieta, your analysis is interesting, especially considering one comment I remember Simon making on the show…he said that maybe she was overshadowed by the other “personalities” on the show which I think is true, but that doesnt explain why she wasnt able to garner new fans after AI… and yeah I think that could be a better way to market her (and the fronting a and thing could work too)…guess we will have to wait and find out…she’s lucky this happened to her now when shes young so she will have plenty of time to grow and figure out what she wants…she could maybe even write and produce for other artists like Kara does.

  18. That’s really something about Gina Orr quitting and taking Crystal with her. It’s going to be interesting to see how it plays out.

  19. Adam is doing very well :) this is all great news…I’m really looking forward to his second album since he will have more time to work on it and do more writing of his own…speaking of writing, Broken Open is a song that he wrote and I think its amazing but he is no longer performing it on tour…does anyone know why this is, or wants to speculate? lol my guess is that the song is more suited for a quieter ambiance and it just wasn’t turning out how he would like…I also noticed there were some technical issues during some performances…it kinda bums me out cuz I was really looking forward to hearing him sing it live :/ guess we cant always get what we want lol

  20. Glad they are changing Adam’s Australian venues to include teenagers. Also glad they are just increasing capacity rather than adding more dates. He has a lot of shows to do. It’s really fantastic to see how much success he is having.

  21. roquemocan:
Gina Orr, who is to going to work with Crystal, was Allison Iraheta’s publicist…

    Please tell me this isn’t true…… Crystal doesn’t stand a chance. :(

  22. I googled Gina Orr and she also used to be Britney Spear’s publicist so I wouldn’t be too worried about Crystal. The fact that Allison’s career hasn’t caught fire can’t really be blamed on her publicist. ;)

And I’m not sure a redo of “Kradison” will ignite her career. The problem is why would these talented, hot guys that all the teens love need Allison. They’d be doing fine without her. But I agree a band is her best bet.

  23. Please tell me this isn’t true…… Crystal doesn’t stand a chance.

Gina was not specifically only Allison’s publicist. She did publicity for a bunch of the idols and 19 in general with a focus seemingly on the Jive idols.

  24. Gina Orr, who is to going to work with Crystal, was Allison Iraheta’s publicist…

    Please tell me this isn’t true…… Crystal doesn’t stand a chance. :(

I would like to know the story behind Gina Orr leaving 19E and also her managing Crystal. This is the kind of news that gives you no sense of whether it’s very good for Crystal or very bad, at least to me.

  25. Gina also did publicity for NSync and Britney Spears not just Idols signed with Jive. It’s pretty common for agents to change agencies, go out on their own. I don’t think it’s a rare event or bodes ill for Crystal.

The good news is that Crystal won’t be fighting for attention amidst a bunch of other Idols managed by 19M. The bad news is that she won’t get the super grade A promo they get their clients. Don’t look for Crystal on SYTYCD for example.

  26. Broken Open is a song that he wrote and I think its amazing but he is no longer performing it on tour…does anyone know why this is, or wants to speculate?

IMHO I think BO got pulled was that there was 4 slowed down songs in the middle of the concert. And thematically BO was similar partially to SW and AM so to step up the pace of the show they pulled the one song that was already sorta being done. So the theme and overall show was kept intake but the pace was picked up. Making it easier to move people into the upbeat ending 3rd of the show….haha but thats all IMHO and YMMV

  27. I googled Gina Orr and she also used to be Britney Spear’s publicist so I wouldn’t be too worried about Crystal. The fact that Allison’s career hasn’t caught fire can’t really be blamed on her publicist.

Yeah, but when was she her publicist? During the “Oops, I Did It Again” phase, or during the shaved-head-attacking-papprazzi-with-umbrellas phase? Even this most recent incarnation of Britney has been meh for me. “3”? Not cute for a 29-year-old mother.

  28. Publicists can only do so much if their client is mentally ill (which Britney Spears appeared to be at one point.) The fact that Gina Orr handled some of Jive’s biggest acts means she’s an experienced pro. So in that sense Crystal will be fine. I don’t think Crystal will ignite any media frenzy. She just needs to put out a kick ass album. ;)

  29. Masieta, I agree with you regarding Allison, not building her own fan base. I had made a comment regarding this awhile back. RE: Gina Orr: As a publicist and working for someone else, Gina’s hands were tied. She had to play by their rules. Maybe as a manager, on her own, Gina Orr can help Allison as well. Different rules. Has there been a confirmation that Allison was dropped? I have not seen one.
Happy for Adam, getting the success he has wanted. He will however, be tired with no down time. Glad Kris is hopefully going to get some down time and be with his family.
Still love season 8 the best. Apparently, so do a lot of people. Kris, Adam, Danny, Allison, Matt, Anoop, are always in these threads and IMO the most talked about Idols ever.

  30. I can’t tell you how excited I am about Adam’s international tour!! And New Zealand is so lucky!! I don’t think we’ll have a new video though but I can keep my fingers crossed! :-)

  31. aa618892:

Damn! That is amazing regarding Adam’s Australia concerts. I wonder how much bigger these new venues are?

From what I could find by Googling,
Enmore Theatre – capacity 2200 GA (was 1500 at the Metro Theatre)
Palais Theatre – capacity around 2800-2900 (was 1500-2000 at the Palace Theatre)

  32. I could not be happier for Adam…and his fans!

As far as Crystal and the Orr pairing, they must have really hit it off. If Gina is starting a new company, you can bet she’s going to work her tail off for Crystal so this might not be a bad thing.

  33. I’m confused, Gina was only publicist, wasn’t she? now she’s going to be Crystal’s manager? As I understand it, these are completely two different roles.

  34. Masieta, I think that’s a very interesting idea! You are right that she was always, always relating to/looking to other people on the show – and I mean that in a good, productive way. It would be very interesting to see that angle play out. Who knows…

  35. DrewSavage Attn: Adam Lambert fans. BIG announcement coming tomorrow at 8am @virgin953. That’s it…I’ve said too much already.

This from Canada Vancouver radio station…. ohhhhh a single announcement maybe?

I’m stoked with all the news today!

  36. I love Lee’s promo for Arlington Park – they use one of his songs!

  37. Ooh, Adam announcement!

I’m going to New Zealand in a few months for my cousin’s wedding. Wonder if they’ll have a different single by then. Fever’s not one of my favorites from his album, but it is catchy :P.

…Personally, I’m still waiting on any Aaron, Crystal, and Siobhan news. Crystal having an experienced manager should be a good thing, right?

  38. BTW, I just wanted to comment on something from the other thread:

Simon Fuller DID leave 19 a few months back. He heads his own company now, but works with 19 as a consultant.

He’s still the Executive Producer of American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance, which is why you see his “fingerprints” all over those press releases.

  39. This from Canada Vancouver radio station…. ohhhhh a single announcement maybe?

its not a single announcement (the dj said it wasn’t on twitter). it is likely a concert in vancouver…probably either after the hawaii shows, or after the wash state show (not sure if there is time before the singapore thing). Canada has been so good to Adam.. Surprised that more GN dates had not been scheduled. 50Kish people showed up in quebec. A vancouver show makes sense.

  40. Fever is my favorite song on FYE. Gotta admit I am a little jealous that it wasn’t released here. It would sound amazing on radio.

  41. Thanks guys. I feel a lot better now about Gina Orr handling Crystal.

  42. Good for Tim! and Big Mike, that’s the perfect gig for him at UCF. Lovin’ the Lee hometown appearance promos! wish i could go.

  43. I want to clarify one issue where there seems to be confusion in posting. Management is different than what record company you sign with. Very few are managed by 19 – they tend to cherry pick the best. I’ve seen people saying the Idols all are managed by 19, which is not the case at all. Few are signed by any branch of RCA/19/whatever, and fewer yet are managed by them.

If Crystal is managed by Gina, I think that will be the first of the current crop for which we’ll have that info. I am not sure it will save her from competition for resources, as that might come more in the making of the record, where she will still be with Jive. I don’t think this means she’ll win the argument over when the record comes out. Doesn’t her record company decide this, while her management focuses on promotion?

  44. I don’t think this means she’ll win the argument over when the record comes out. Doesn’t her record company decide this, while her management focuses on promotion?

You’re correct, this will not change anything regarding what the record company decides.

  45. I’m confused, Gina was only publicist, wasn’t she? now she’s going to be Crystal’s manager? As I understand it, these are completely two different roles.

They are, but management needs good strategizing, organizational skills, contacts, people skills, and an understanding of the business (preferably of the arists’ genre too) IMO. Any good successful publicist will at least have the contacts, people skills, organizational skills and an understanding of the overall music business. So to me, the pairing could have potential. We just have to see if Ms Orr has a handle on the other things needed.

Kradison was of only interest to some rabid fans on the internet, which also spurn some really ugly fan wars. Their last appearance on the Ryan Seacrest concert give away promo was a disaster. They were never a force to be reckon with in the real world – judging by the huge disparities in sales between Adam, Kris, Allison.

  47. So does Lee have a manager yet? I thought management was like a go between between artist and getting what’s best for the artist. That should be RCA but it seems it would be a good idea to at least have an adviser that knows the business, so you have a better understanding of that side of it. Maybe I’m just confused by the term, manager. Is that the same as agent?

  48. the thing is…. what the hell is happening at 19E?

somethings weird lately. everyone is either gettin fired or leaving..

it makes me un-easy.. esp. with that “almost a myth” album of cook..

  49. Matt G is going out on a radio tour!!!

    ImMattGiraud

#Now begins RADIO TOUR WEEK!! Lansing & Grand Rapids tomorrow. Then Chicago, Cleveland, Flint! Here we go!…yo. Must Zzzzz soon.. about 1 hour ago via Echofon

  50. “From what I could find by Googling,
Enmore Theatre – capacity 2200 GA (was 1500 at the Metro Theatre)
Palais Theatre – capacity around 2800-2900 (was 1500-2000 at the Palace Theatre)”

Both these theatres are usually venues for major touring bands and are the next tier down from convention centres/smaller stadia. It’s a pretty big step for someone on their first album to do a first tour in these venues in Australia. The Brisbane venue (for which I already have my ticket) is a beautiful art deco theatre with approx 1200 capacity. It has a history of playing host to artists who, on their next trip to Brisbane, end up playing at the 10,000 seat Entertainment Centre. Taylor Swift, the Veronicas and Silverchair all played sold out gigs at the Tivoli before coming back 12-18 months later with stadium gigs.

  51. Here’s an article from last year about an interview with Simon Fuller and amongst other things, the relationship between 19 and the idols:
    http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/content_display/industry/e3i322daa247a5902fc7948fd1228f28ead

How about the relationship between your management company, 19 Entertainment, and the show’s contestants. How has that evolved?
Contractually we have options on all of the contestants. That’s always been the case. But at this point, it doesn’t mean I will always option those rights. It has to feel right to me. I have to feel there is a relationship there. We will always have the winner signed to 19, so we’ll have the recording rights. But as for the management, that is much more of a human element. I feel more emotional about these things now than I ever did before. I want everyone to be focused and excited. I haven’t quite got it in me to push water uphill anymore.

From this, we could assume that Lee is with 19M and that they let Crystal chose another management company.

  52. it is likely a concert in vancouver…probably either after the hawaii shows, or after the wash state show (not sure if there is time before the singapore thing).

I was thinking Adam would do some Canada concerts at some point. After Hawaii and before Europe seems like a perfect time. Maybe that’s it.

  53. IMO, Crystal does not really care if she becomes a platinum selling, chart topping artist. I think she just wants to make a living doing what she does, selling enough to live a comfortable life with her son,and longevity. If she makes it bigger, by making music she enjoys sharing, then that is just icing on the cake. I am not even a fan of hers, but I respect her for knowing who she is, and where she wants to be, and how she’s going to get there.

  54. I love the Fever release in NZ. Fever is my favorite fast song on the album, and I want to see how well it can do somewhere…anywhere!

  55. im happy for adam but he has to becareful, the way he dress because teenagers love style, hair style and extra.

for soibhan,i heard that she go home and write with her band and give to manager to find the record deal.i find it odd ,she already must have record label, shes awsome.now some fan said she must have a band but she have one, whats the diffrence?im mean they worried that she need new band.

  56. I admittedly no nothing about the record business, but from a layman’s perspective it seems that a VP of a record label quitting her job so she can become Crystal’s manager is a really, really big deal. I’ve never heard of such a thing happening before, especially for an artist who hasn’t even recorded her first major label album yet!

Congrats, MamaSox! Seems some very high up people really believe in you. You already know you have us 40-something dudes firmly on your bandwagon!

I’m not sure. As far as I know, publicist is not really high up on the hierarchy inside the label. Gina did work in PR department, right? For an artist, you want your agent/management agency to be experienced and well connected, which means when he/she tries to contact the big shots in the label or any key player in the music industry, they return the phone calls. Anyway, she’s new to this, and if I understand this correctly, she’s starting her own agency, not even partner with any existing well-known agency, hmm, I think it’s kind of iffy.

  58. I’m actually pleased that Crystal is not going to be managed by 19 because I think she will benefit greatly from having someone outside of the 19 Group covering her back.

The following is a quote by Los Angeles music attorney Gary Fine from an old 2002 article regarding American Idol’s aggressive contract. I doubt much has changed since then. BTW, this is an eye opening article.

http://dir.salon.com/ent/feature/2002/09/18/idol_contract/index.html (quote is on page 3)

“The artist-manager relationship is the most important one in connection with the artist’s career,” says Gary Fine. “The artist needs someone fighting for them with regard to certain career decisions. The cozy relationship between 19 Management Ltd. and 19 Recordings Ltd. would create serious conflicts, and almost certainly remove any real ability for 19 Management to support tough decisions on behalf of their artists if the sister record company is opposed to them.

  59. As far as I know, publicist is not really high up on the hierarchy inside the label. Gina did work in PR department, right?

Well, she didn’t simply “work in PR” at 19, she was the Vice President of Publicity for 19 Records…not exactly some clerk fetching coffee in the PR dept. LOL!

  60. Well, she didn’t simply “work in PR” at 19, she was the Vice President of Publicity for 19 Records…not exactly some clerk in the PR dept. LOL!

LOL not all VPs are equal. don’t let the big title fool you. Publicity department basically has no say in any key business decision.

  61. That article pre-dates that lawsuit.

CindyM, yes, there were some changes but the conflict of interest still exists and that is my main point. I think Crystal will be much better off NOT being managed by 19.

  62. The Chugg Entertainment article re Adam – “cemented his claim as a bona-fide artist in his own right.” Such wonderful news about the larger venues – Paula’s prediction coming true. There’s simply no one like him – a treasure.

  63. Tuti, we have heard the same thing about Siobhan. She wants to record with her band Lunar Valve and write more songs. However, after watching the interaction with the lead guitarist in the Idol band, I wonder if sticking with her home band is the best thing to do.

As far as I know, her Dad has been her manager. I don’t know if another one has been signed. Making the right decisions now could influence her career. I wish Siobhan the very best!

  64. wish adam and siobhan the best.i realy love to see adam surprise us with diffrent, awsome look and style.

  65. My $0.02 on all of this news…

-LOVE that Adam is doing NZ — brilliant! And amazing news that he needs larger venues in Sydney & Melbourne. Jeez, will Adam become the new ABBA in terms of popularity?

-ECSTATIC that “Fever” will be the next single in NZ. I think that bodes VERY well for its release in the U.S. I take it RCA is going to use that as a “test market,” so to speak, and see how it plays with the non-Adam-fan-music-listening public and the media. I just think it’s time to strike while the iron is hot in America with “Fever” on the heels of IIHY — so many other artists have been releasing their follow-up singles while their current single is still way up on the charts (Katy Perry, Eminem, Lady Gaga, et al). It works.

When “Fever” is released here there is no one stopping the media storm not only about the song’s “pronoun” issue (love that controversy!) but also that it’s a Gaga song and Gaga-produced (or at least participated). With Gaga not being in the Top 40 herself, sort of being on the down-low right now, this will be great PR for her when the song hits big, which it will. It goes without saying how incredible it will be for Adam.

-Very happy to hear about Crystal & Gina Orr. I think Crystal is big enough that 19 could have taken her, no matter what. But this is probably a VERY VERY good thing for Crystal. I have to be honest: I’m not entirely loving 19’s handling of Adam. I’m not saying 19 should have let him go — he’s too valuable to them for that — but they should have had the wisdom and foresight and vision to recognize that, oh, Adam is unlike anyone else we’ve had before — he’s unlike any other male artist in music today, or anyone that’s been around for YEARS — and maybe we should subcontract someone who can handle this kind of powerhouse, someone like a Guy Oseary, Madonna’s manager. I think there was WAY too much on-the-job training where they were concerned (AMAs, for one).

  66. I adore the Fever scenario above. It would be so exciting to hear Fever on the radio (my favorite getting-ready-to-go out song). And the gaga tie in would be exciting. I’d be very worried a lot of stations in the US would refuse to play it because of the “he”. Maybe you are right and they are testing it in NZ. Or maybe they never will target the US with this one. Let’s see – it’s fun to watch.

  67. 19 rca is good to adam but for making right decision not that good.even for advice

  68. I’m actually pleased that Crystal is not going to be managed by 19 because I think she will benefit greatly from having someone outside of the 19 Group covering her back.

I don´t think that 19 is necessary the devil. Look at Adam for example, he benefited a lot from 19 and seems very pleased with them. He has the right promotion on TV, international gigs, headling tour, etc. And also he seems to be having a lot of saying in all decisions!

I know the some think it´s best for her to have some independency and that could help her getting the album she wants but I really think it´s too early to start being stubborn with her label. She should listen Adam´s interview with Lyndsey Parker on the bench! Sometimes you have to compromise a bit now to get more on a long run.

I think gina leaving is a simple consequence to the shake up that is going on with Jive and within 19. I don’t think she left because she wanted to manage Crystal. Why would someone leave a cushy job to manage an essentially unknown niche artist? That is a risk no matter the potential especially in this economy.

  70. It seems to me Crystal is a lot like Adam in that she knows what she wants to do rather than waiting for somebody to tell her what to do. I know nothing about Gina Orr but if she knows Simon Fuller she knows the right kinda of people to be able to help Crystal. I’m happy for her for not having to sit around waiting for something positive to happen. She now has someone in her corner to help with the grunt work so she can concentrate on her music and kid. Sounds like a good plan to me!

  71. Damn! That is amazing regarding Adam’s Australia concerts. I wonder how much bigger these new venues are?

The Palais in Melbourne is in the neighborhood of 2500-3000 or thereabouts.Don’t know about the Sydney venue.

  72. Guy Oseary managed Kat McPhee. I prefer 19M.

They have done well for those under their label the last few years imo. Including Allison who received some nice promotional opportunities even when her album failed to take off. It’s possible back in the days of Clay and Kelly things were different but from Carrie forward I believe they’ve done well with their clients.

Your totally right, they have been great to Adam. They have given him the leeway to be himself, which is helping to make him a brand instead of just another Idol singer. From what he said, they asked him what he wanted and have worked with him to make it happen. Adam’s biggest asset in my opinion is that he’s willing to collaborate with the people who know a lot more than him, but still get his ideas in and make music that they both like.

  74. I don’t think 19 managed Allison, did they? She’s with Jive, but I’ve never heard who her management is. They tend to take the very cream of the crop.

I don’t think the AMAs debacle was management’s fault, other than the fact they gave him his head. I believe what happened there was all Adam. They had had good experiences recently with giving a lot of latitude to others, and tried it with him. He needs a bit more direction, IMO. I think he was also behind the album cover, another questionable decision. I think they’ve reigned him in since then, and the results have improved dramatically for him.

As to it being better not being with 19 for management, Fuller seems to do a great job lining up opportunities that are high profile. His signees are used more on Idol, for instance. There are other high-profile gigs he’s been able to get that not everyone probably can. I realize that’s not what Crystal is necessarily going for, but she does need to keep up exposure on some level. Again, it is important to distinguish whether you are talking about management or record company when discussing contracts and perks. I have had a hard time following the discussion here because it’s not clear that all the posters know which is which.

  75. BTW, I think there are a number of the Idols who are quite aware of who they are and aren’t waiting to be told what to do. Some have gotten in trouble for it. I think some just were not around here to see the fights, so it is easy to think Crystal and Adam are unique in that. I actually think very few of the 1-2 finishers were waiting to be molded and shaped and created. Most did as well as they did precisely because they had some musical POV. There are probably one or two exceptions. Some knew who they were and let themselves be pushed around anyway, but have recovered (Bo, maybe?). Others fought harder.

  76. I think some fans were into Kradison and many (probably more) were not. JMO. I was not into Kradison and thought of Allison as her own person, not as anyone’s little sister.

I think, among other things, Jive chose a terrible first single, and made unfortunate wardrobe choices for Allison’s first few tv appearances, which were opportunities that couldn’t be repeated, with the momentum of the show just ending.

If they had started with Don’t Waste the Pretty, which I think is a great song, and let her dress more maturely, kind of like she dresses now onstage, and promoted her strongly and not as a teenybopper, it might have gone better. But she will work it out over time.

One thing I disagree with is people saying she had no fan base. She had fans who voted for her to make it to top 4. That’s nothing to sneeze at. (Like people saying that Casey didn’t have a fan base, though he made it to #3. He clearly has a large fan base.) I think maybe Allison and Jive made some bad choices that lost her fans and didn’t win new ones. But I still expect great things from Allison eventually.

  77. If you watch the video of Lee in the ice cream shop, he asks someone named “Michelle” a question about 15 seconds into the video. The way it is asked, it leads me to believe that this “Michelle” is possibly a manager. David Cook’s manager is also Michelle. In talking to some folks on other boards, it was discussed that Michelle may be managing both David and Lee. And I think she is a 19 employee?

  78. As best I understand it:

Management/Agent/PR…This is the team that connects an Artist up with tour opportunities, professional tour videos, TV shows, one-off gigs, speaking or hosting gigs, books, magazine articles and feature stories, published photo spreads, openings (whether stores, movies, plays…red carpet promotions), movie, tv, broadway roles, music festival appearances, interviews..all the stuff not directly related to “published music”.

Record company…produces, advertises, distributes, markets the recorded music. Sets up (with management) radio gigs, is responsible for banners and print ads for singles and albums, correlates with on-line sites such as AOL music, co-ordinates video and video distribution (for songs off the album).

An easy way to look at it is that management handles the person and record companies handle the “recorded music”.

I completely agree with all you’ve said. The album cover and the AMAs are squarely on his shoulders, although I am significantly sympathetic about the AMAs since I believe he was under and put himself under some unrealistic expectations. I’ve always thought that he needed a ‘Lee Cherry’ in his life to edit out the flaming headdresses. LOL

I also agree with you about Fuller. I think 19 brings a lot of advantages. With such a low season, I think both Crystal and Lee will need to get as much exposure as possible. Its great to want to do things on their own and in their own way, but I think a compromise needs to be made between securing your place and creating your vision. I hope Crystal can balance the two.

  80. In regards to playing Fever in the U.S.: I just heard “I kissed a girl” on my way to work this A.M. and I was thinking the whole time how unfair it is that we have to stress over the “he” pronoun. NOT FAIR!

Is it possible that we’re underestimating the U.S. public……I doubt it.

  81. Gina’s a pro. She has TONS of experience that will serve her well as Crystal’s manager. On a personal level, she’s one of my fave peeps in the industry to deal with. Very accommodating, always honest. Crazy hard-working. (And I’m not the only one at my job who adores her.) I wish her the best and know she’s going to knock it out of the park. <3

  82. I think gina leaving is a simple consequence to the shake up that is going on with Jive and within 19. I don’t think she left because she wanted to manage Crystal.

Wow, I hadn’t read that Gina got fired and is only managing Crystal out of desperation. Could you provide the linky, because that’s a huge story!

    Thx!

:) Yay! Inside opinion! Thanks so much. In return I will try not to fangirl… too much. :D

  84. In talking to some folks on other boards, it was discussed that Michelle may be managing both David and Lee. And I think she is a 19 employee?

She is. However, she also has a semi-secret Twitter account (no, I’m not directing people to it) and she isn’t even following LD on there. She is following other people outside of the Cook circle. So I’d say no.

I wish her the best and know she’s going to knock it out of the park. <3

Wonderful. I really hope this works out for her and for CB. It sounds like they’ve already tried a different playbook with her, so I hope that continues.

  85. Jim, thank you for your perspective :) I am really interested to watch how things unfold for Crystal, she’s one of my all-time favorite voices from the show. And only the second person ever in all our years of viewing (since S2) to make my husband sit down and watch every time she performed. He’s still mad that she didn’t win, lol.

IMO, 99.999% of the people who go into this business, and absolutely everyone who appears on American Idol, are in this business for the fame and fortune that goes with a career doing what they love. They want to go on stage and have people screaming their name. They want lots of money. I sincerely doubt anyone goes into this thinking “well I’d be happy to just make enough to pay my bills and buy a nice used car”. I’ve heard this comment before about Crystal and I do wonder where it comes from. Is it the dreads and her bohemian appearance that are making people think Crystal doesn’t want a huge music career? That she would think it’s “uncool” to be wildly famous and popular? I personally have never gotten the impression that Crystal doesn’t want everything that comes with a hugely successful music career. JMO of course.

  87. I guess I had a little confusion of my own to clear up. After talking to some folks more knowledgeable than myself on this, I see that it is Simon Fuller specifically who has managed the most selective group, which includes Carrie, David Cook, and Adam Lambert. Others are managed by others within 19, but I do think 19 is pretty selective still. Apparently Allison is one managed by 19 but not by Fuller. Probably the same is true for Lee, as far as we know.

  88. I guess I would add that the ones managed by Fuller get the top of the top promo, while others get somewhat less. That leaves me unsure if this is good for Crytal or not. She will still probably lose some promo opportunities she would have gotten with 19.

  89. I personally have never gotten the impression that Crystal doesn’t want everything that comes with a hugely successful music career. JMO of course.

Especially as she auditioned for the biggest TV show in America – one whose sole purpose is to manufacture pop stars!

I’ve seen fans do this every year when it looks as though their favorite won’t be as successful as they first thought. I’ve done it myself. I do think Crystal will be better off than she would have been if she’d never auditioned, but I don’t buy that she doesn’t want fame and fortune. She broke up with her boyfriend over her ambitions for heaven’s sake!

  90. Wow, I hadn’t read that Gina got fired and is only managing Crystal out of desperation. Could you provide the linky, because that’s a huge story!

    Thx!

No where did I say she got fired nor did I say anything about desperation. I strongly suggest you re-read what I wrote rather than assuming I am bashing.

I said things got shaken up. When management changes or huge clients change then things get shaken up and the landscape within a company changes. “IF” she had close ties with Jive but fewer with the Universal (or whoever is the new label) then she probably will be in a less than desirable position. She very well may have dislike some of the changes and decided to leave. No harm, no foul. Since you didn’t seem to understand what I wrote previously.. I’ll restate it for you. I think that gina picked up Crystal on the way out the door. She was leaving and both Gina and Crystal thought it was a good idea. I think it is a HUGE stretch to think that someone is going to quit a secure and well paying job because some unproven artist wants to part from 19 and needs a manager. Sorry I don’t buy it.

  91. Especially as she auditioned for the biggest TV show in America – one whose sole purpose is to manufacture pop stars!

Where there other TV shows or otherwise that could have given her the platform to be financially independent by doing what she loves to do? She had literally struggled for years using other means to no avail.

but I don’t buy that she doesn’t want fame and fortune. She broke up with her boyfriend over her ambitions for heaven’s sake!

I´m sure she´ll accept fame and fortune if it´s a direct consequence of people appreciating HER music. If the cost would be compromising her integrity as an artist, imo, she´d much rather choose less $$$ as long as she could concentrate on doing what she loves. You may think that she´s not being honest when she says material things like big houses, expensive cars etc don´t mean much and when she sings “success isn´t about the money, but doing what you love” are just empty words. IMO, if she can find financial security as an artist, her dreams will have materialized.
Regarding the breakup. For you info, HE broke up with her for heavens sake! So it looks like he didn´t love her enough to support her dream of being able to do what she love´s and share it with her fans.

  92. I think that gina picked up Crystal on the way out the door.

Oh, I thought you had a scoop, not just a personal opinion or random guess. Sorry about misunderstanding! My bad.

  93. I´m sure she´ll accept fame and fortune if it´s a direct consequence of people appreciating HER music.

IMO she’d accept it no matter if its HER music or someone elses.

If the cost would be compromising her integrity as an artist, imo, she´d much rather choose less $$$ as long as she could concentrate on doing what she loves

Money, in the entertainment industry, generally equates to power. IMO, Crystal isn’t stupid. Hopefully she has good advisers that will help her understand that a few concessions today can lead to a future that she can control.

  94. IMO she’d accept it no matter if its HER music or someone elses.

I meant while it was music she put out that she was content with, not necessarily her own writing

  95. i guess I had a little confusion of my own to clear up. Probably the same is true for Lee, as far as we know.blockquote>

All of the idols signed to 19 have Fuller as their manager but also have a day-to-day manager. Adam’s cd lists Simon Fuller & Iain Pirie as management. Kris’ cd lists Simon Fuller & Sterling McIIwain as management. Allison’s cd lists Simon Fuller & Ann Edelblute as management. I would imagine Lee will have Simon Fuller & ????? as managemnt unless 19 bucks the trend and allows Lee to go his own way. So I don’t think that is necessarily the case.

  96. IMO she’d accept it no matter if its HER music or someone elses.

Considering how adamant she has been about having her solo-penned material on her album, and taking her time, and making it a direct reflection of her as an artist (even suggesting waiting until the spring to release it!), I don’t think she is interested in getting success with other people’s songs.

I suppose one could argue that her initial cluelessness about the scope of AI (“3 million people”), her insistence on mentioning only a few select cowriters (Perry, Franti, Etheridge) and obvious discomfort with the SOP of the stable cowriters (“what would you think if I sang a pop song”), and her general attitude surrounding her work, is all a massive put-on to attract the listeners who would normally shun her after being on AI.

But I honestly think she is just that principled and/or naive.

Hopefully she has good advisers that will help her understand that a few concessions today can lead to a future that she can control.

We’ll see how this pans out. But I don’t think she’s as willing to concede to some of these things now as you do, whether or not others think it short-sighted (and I’m not necessarily saying that it isn’t).

  97. There are those who would love for Crystal to fail (you know who you are)by following the 19 trend of overproduced tunes(listen to Adam’s CD vs the live version. The live version is a 100 times better than the 19 overproduced stuff.)

And there of us who want her to succeed doing it her way… recording her own songs… in her own way. I’m in the second category. I don’t think I will be disappointed but I think you naysayers will be!

  98. Tripp ncwy, from everything I’ve heard for the last 2 plus years, I believe you are wrong. There is a smaller sub-group of Idols signed to 19 management that have management from Fuller that not all of them do.

  99. MrDuffin: couldnt have said it better.

What it comes down to is you either believe what she says or you don’t. Crystal has said very clearly and in numerous times what she wants from her career and why she auditioned for idol. If you cannot get that from her interviews then I am sorry you need to take langauge lessons. She couldnt be any more straightforward than that. For the believers its very refreshing to see such a talent and appreciative that she is strong and wants to stand on her own. Also once a subway busker living on bare mininmum it isnt that hard to believe she can be content with a moderate career.
