Why Carrie Underwood didn’t get an Entertainer of the Year nod from the CMA:

As a former member of the CMA’s board of directors, I’ll throw one other possible explanation into the mix, though, admittedly, it doesn’t make for a very satisfying reason: Sometimes CMA voters just get in a mood.

When that happens, it’s the musical equivalent of a “throw the bums out” political climate. The electorate — which, in this case, consists of members of the music industry, from artists to radio to record companies to assorted other support positions — gets fed up with the status quo and decides to recognize a new crop of acts that the industry wants to have represent it, not what the fans actually like best and support most.

They then cut to an interview with David.

  9. I finally got to see and hear Clay sing on Phinneas & Ferb today! His cartoon self is so cute!

  10. Hooray for Archie. I am sure he is in Hog Heaven, what with getting to be on the same stage as Natasha Bedlington.

Does MJ have a link? I’d love to see/hear that bit with Chaka Khan.

According to several tweets, Jennifer Hudson recorded two new songs, produced by Rich Harrison called “Hour Glass” and “No One’s Gon’ Love U”

“Gon'” for “going to?” How far off will the music industry take titles from real words until someone figures out that it’s all jibberish? In fact, why doesn’t Jennifer go the whole way and call it “no1s gon’ luv U?” Mini Rant.

Regarding that interview at Q102 in Philly–I replied to their tweet about the interview, asking them to play his song! I wonder why David is visiting radio stations that really will probably never play his songs. “No one’s gon’ love U” is more likely to be on Q102.

  12. GRAND RAPIDS — ArtPrize will produce two free concerts downtown with Natasha Bedingfield, David Archuleta and other notables.

Hmmm….Grand Rapids is about a two hour drive for me and it’s on a Saturday. Might be able to do a road trip to see Archie!!

  18. Lee’s album release date is November 16th, right? That date just got a little more competitive — saw on twitter today that that is now the release date for Keith Urban’s next album

  19. Lee’s album release date is November 16th, right? That date just got a little more competitive — saw on twitter today that that is now the release date for Keith Urban’s next album

It will likely get WAY more competitive as the day approaches – November, right before Thanksgiving is the most competitive of the year – last year all the heavy-hitters came out around then, competing with the idols (shakes fist at SuBo, lol)

ETA: Not keeping up too much on idol release dates, but do we now have the two David’s in the fall, plus Lee? With Crystal not releasing till maybe March? (which I think is a mistake, but whatevs)

  20. but do we now have the two David’s in the fall

Heh, wish I knew about the second David. The Cook camp is a silent fortress ;)

  21. tierbee – ah, ok, thanks. IIRC there were rumblings he would release something in the fall. But I guess nothing has been set in stone yet.

JHud’s album is supposed to be out this year. EW said it’d be out in Nov/Dec.

Casey James fans: The new Country Weekly with King George (Strait) on the cover has a blurb about Casey signing with BNA. They used his quote to Yahoo about being able to mix blues, rock, and country in Nashville and they’ve got a nice picture of him.

According to the Opry Carrie’s rescheduled her Sept 17th Opry performance for September 16th “with portions of the show filmed to air later on a network television series highlighting Nashville flood recovery.”

Brian Mansfield had a little rant speculating why Carrie didn’t get a CMA Entertainer Of The Year nomination.

Country Universe talks about sexism affecting the CMA Entertainer Of The Year category.

Even if you strain your reason to justify Swift’s exclusion because she was a little less visible during the last three months of the eligibility period, the Underwood snub is the most blatantly unfair this category has seen since the days of Shania Twain, who somehow only earned one nomination while she was absolutely destroying the competition at an international level that has never been matched.

Perhaps the voting methodology of the CMA awards, which allows voters to pick up to five nominees in each category, has exacerbated the “token female” dilemma. I don’t know, and I really don’t care. Because in an era where even the ACM Awards are showing better taste than the CMA’s, the flagship organization of country music needs to address its female trouble while it still has a single shred of credibility left.

  23. From your lips to God’s ears, I hope there is a Cook record release in the Fall. I thought i would be listening to it on beach over the Summer. Now, I am just hoping I hear it before New Years.

  24. Speaking of Cookie, I haven’t heard anything about his album release date. I’m starting to worry. :( I’m itching to buy it!

  25. I hope there is a Cook record release in the Fall.

I don’t think it’s happening! He started recording at the end of June (?), and its been a little over 2 months now. But they are still reportedly laying down tracks. I really think it will end up being next year. Wouldn’t mind being wrong though. :)

  26. I love the sound of that new ballad by Archie. I hope he gets the promo he deserves for the album. It should do very well. His fans are from the teens to the older adults so I think Jive knows they have a real talent with him. He is only 19 so he has long career ahead of him.

  27. A poster on DCO just reported on a tweet from Shirley Halperin, saying that in her opinion, she doubts that the new album will be out this year.

Now that’s hardly official and , assuming that it is from Halperin, it’s clearly signalled as an opinion and not first hand knowledge. But it’s probably the closest I’ve seen to some information confirming fan speculation. She is actually in contact with the man, I do believe…

Anyhow – in all honesty, I don’t mind when the album is coming out, but I would like some damned information, p-l-eeee-aaa-se!

Because there’s a whole great chasm of difference between DCTR2 being released next year, because the label is under-enthused and wants to drop it in a quiet time and, say, Cook and co proving that they can produce some interesting stuff in the studio, which the label likes and is therefore willing to indulge them taking their time and will give a big push next year.

I’d just kind of like to know which it is…because then it doesn’t matter when the album is released, IMO. With support, if it’s good enough it will find its audience and if it isn’t, it won’t. If the support isn’t there, it’s not going to matter that much when it’s released either, as it happens: it will face a huge uphill battle.

So come on Cook, RCA, 19E, whoever it is who’s keeping up the iron walls of silence: communicate here!

ETA: I’m still hoping for the former interpretation: the label likes what’s been happening so far and has allowed them to take their time or they always had some plan, for reasons best known to them, but I do, pretty much 95%, believe that DCTR2 will be released next year.

Also, on DCO Scott mentioned talking to some of the band members and that they were pretty excited and upbeat about the amount of freedom they’d had in the recording process. I would have thought that if there were serious problems behind the scenes, then, whilst I wouldn’t see anyone sharing that, I wouldn’t imagine a hugely positive response either.

It’s just all very confusing and I’m getting sick and tired of all the speculation. But fan communication doesn’t really seem to be a priority of anyone on the Cook team, which is a shame, because it wouldn’t take that much to maintain a positive vibe in this group of fans, IMO…

  28. fadetowhite:

I don’t think it is because the label has no confidence in him or that he needs more time in the studio and the label is giving it to him. I think both of those choices are not correct. I think it has to do with what is going on at the label with other artists. It is label politics. The choice of singles from a record and the time a record drops is all label driven. It could be that they don’t want him to drop in the same quarter as Lee. And they want to give Lee the best start possible. Who knows really? It could be that he has no one at the label who is in his corner and fighting for him which is another thing he has no control over. Or it could just be that the label made a decision that they want his album out in Q1 for other reasons. But it is not IMO because David’s record is so bad they want to hide it or that David is so slow they need to push it back to give him time. I do not believe it is either of those.

  29. I can’t angst about DCTR2 anymore. I get all pissed off, and I don’t want to feel like that, lol. I do think it would be nice if they would drop us *something* – the great fortress of silence is aggravating. I’m trying to just pick up some other cool music and chillll… I’m not sure Busch Gardens helped, I think it made it worse ;)

  30. I LOVE that we might get to hear him sing on specials every Christmas! His voice is made for Christmas. I can’t wait to see this special!

  31. I think it has to do with what is going on at the label with other artists. It is label politics. The choice of singles from a record and the time a record drops is all label driven. It could be that they don’t want him to drop in the same quarter as Lee. And they want to give Lee the best start possible. Who knows really? Or it could just be that the label made a decision that they want his album out in Q1 for other reasons.

Yeah, it could be any or all of those things too and, I really don’t care all that much, one way or the other. Albums get delayed all the time; albums get released at all times of year, for all sorts of reasons. And they are reasons that I’ve never paid much attention to, before becoming interested via the Idol boards.

It just seems to me that the fan speculation has become somewhat negative now, because of a lack of information and that it wouldn’t do any harm whatsoever to let them know, via DCO, that the album won’t be released until next year.
