‘Idol’ hopefuls crowd AT&T Park

An estimated 7, 000 people filed through AT&T Park on Tuesday, the first day contestants could register to hold a spot for auditions Thursday – the registration office will stay open every minute until 8 a.m. the day of the tryouts – and indulge their fantasies of winning the everlasting fame the show promises.

Patrick Lynn, the show’s supervising producer who has organized the cattle lines since it all started in 2002, said he’d noticed that the contestants today are more savvy to the show’s process, seemingly born with innate “Idol” knowledge.

“I called last season Idol 2.o, ” Lynn said. “We’d finally reached a point where all of the people who’ve grown up with the show are now able to try out for it. They know how it all works.”

Antwaun Cook Defends Fantasia: Don’t Blame Her for My Broken Marriage

“Antwaun would be remiss not to address the criticism and judgment he has received, ” Cook’s lawyer, Nicole Sodoma, said Wednesday in a statement. “He knew Fantasia Barrino but the failure of his marriage can in no way be blamed on anyone except the two people that were a part of the union – Paula and Antwaun.”

Taylor Hicks

Taylor Hicks isn’t the kind of guy who waits for things to happen or makes excuses when life throws him a curve ball. Even if his recording studio was in his kitchen and he had to hand deliver copies of his self-produced, handmade albums door-to-door to get his music out, he’d do it. If he had to stick CDs in the windshield wipers of every car in the Walmart parking lot, he’d do that too.

‘Idol’ winner Jordin Sparks is ready to fly on Broadway

NEW YORK — Jordin Sparks, who at 17 became the youngest performer to win American Idol, is about to make her Broadway debut playing another precocious overachiever.

But Nina, the working-class character she portrays in the Tony Award-winning musical In the Heights, initially gets our attention not by surpassing expectations, as Sparks did on Idol’s 2007 season, but by failing to live up to them.

New Video “The Truth”: Kris Allen’s Operation Desert Storm

So, was the final video result worth all that suffering? In a word, yes. Esteemed cinematographer Aaron Platt, who directed the dreamy desert clip, did a superb job of creating an artsy, moody, cinematic vibe, shooting Kris amid Discovery Channel-esque sandscapes, dramatically crashing chandeliers, sepia-toned silhouettes…and, um, Pat Monahan.

When TV’s leading men and women leave

The heart of groundbreaking drama “ER” continued to beat after the movie-bound George Clooney pulled the plug on his heroic character, Dr. Doug Ross. The laughs kept coming even though Shelley Long’s Diane Chambers stopped slinging cocktails at ” Cheers, ” and “Star Trek’s” USS Enterprise stayed aloft for decades after William Shatner vacated the captain’s chair.

But “American Idol” without acerbic, tough-love judge Simon Cowell, “Larry King Live” sans Larry King, and “The Office” minus its clueless boss, Steve Carell as the always inappropriate Michael Scott — can the franchises thrive, even survive, without them?

In Focus: Chris Colfer’s Journey From “Social Llama” to Glee

The thing to know about Glee actor Chris Colfer is that he’s not like his character, Kurt.

McKinley High’s fashionable soprano is comfy both performing in 10-inch-high Lady Gaga heels and coaching the football team on how to put a ring on it. He’s the group’s lone, self-assured outcast, virtually free of self-pity and most content in Alexander McQueen.

Colfer says he, on the other hand, was more of a “social llama” in high school.

Kings of Leon: We rejected ‘Glee’

With everybody apparently clamoring to get their music on “Glee” it’s refreshing to see some bands actually refusing to license their music to a TV show.

Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Folowill told music mag NME that he’s rejected the show’s request to use his music, adding that he’s never watched the series and “apparently everybody loves it.”

Folowill also said the band turned down ABC’s “Ugly Betty.”

Me = happy. I love it when Carrie does traditional country. Randy’s a good influence on her :)

I think Missy+Jen could be a very good combination. I’m so curious about Jen’s sophomore album!

  2. Awesome news about Randy and Carrie. They won a Grammy together for “I Told You So”.

  3. Me = happy. I love it when Carrie does traditional country. Randy’s a good influence on her :)

Thanks took the words out of my mouth ..

I might add I might take a peek at the Gulf Is Back thing because it has Ace, Bo and Taylor in it and it’s a good cause.David A and Jordan both have made tv guest spots and wonder will they ever duet?

  4. I sort of get why KOL might not want their songs “Glee-d” but turning down using their song in a movie trailer? Sounds like thowing money down the drain. Interesting.

  5. If he had to stick CDs in the windshield wipers of every car in the Walmart parking lot, he’d do that too.

LOL, boy does that bring back memories of managing my brother’s indie career… I spent more than one late evening in parking lots sticking fliers, whatever on windshields. It’s a grind, for sure, trying to get the word out. I still need to catch Taylor live, he’s always in town when I’m gone! I’m kinda fond of the guy.

Kings of Leon: We rejected ‘Glee’

    http://livefeed.hollywoodreporter.com/2010/08/kings-of-leon-we-rejected-glee.html

That’s funny, because the first time I ever heard KOL was in the closing credits of the movie Disturbia with Taper Jean Girl.

Totally see though why they would not want to be Gleed. When Sirius started playing the Glee version of Don’t Stop Believeing on their station I was mortified. I love the show but those songs suck the life out of an ipod. Downloaded a bunch when I first started watching but who the hell wants to listen to that more than once.

    Good on ya, KOL!

  7. It makes me happy to see this, this is my big *thing* every year now (thanks, David!)… the Race for Hope is amazing, come join us if you can. (I’ve also challenged myself to lose 50 lbs by then – wish me luck – less than 2 lbs a week should be doable but it’s not going to be easy)

  8. Very nice review of Kris’s video. The video did little for me….just goes to show that I evidently know very little:). I don’t know how I feel about the explanation she gave for using Pat in the video…..I think Kris would have done just as well without a *big* name to help sell the song. In fact, I thought Pat was Kris the first time I watched it and I think he sounds so similar to Kris as well. Ah well, good luck to one of my favs….KRIS.

  9. Good for Kings of Leon in saying NO to Glee. It’s refreshing to see someone not sell out.

I also don’t know what people see in Glee?? Although some of the story lines are good, to see them murder those classic songs week after week makes me want to shoot myself. To think that someone is actually buying that utter crap??? OMFG!

  10. I also don’t know what people see in Glee??

Cheesy fun that occasionally rises to something that’s actually pretty moving? I’m a former band nerd, I’m happy to have a goofy, dorky music show on TV, lol.

  11. I don’t mind Glee as a t.v. show — it’s goofy and usually fun. But I don’t know why people want to buy their versions of classic songs. I have no interest in hearing these versions other than during the t.v. episode they are featured on. But that’s just me. YMMV

  12. But I don’t know why people want to buy their versions of classic songs.

Yeah, I have yet to buy one. I mean, I guess if there’s a really good version it would be the same as, say, buying an Idol’s cover song that they perform – and I have plenty of those. So if someone does something I like as much as, say, Cook’s Billie Jean or Casey’s Don’t or Adam’s Mad World, then I’d buy it. But I don’t usually want the whole group-sing thing. Just not my thing.

  13. But I don’t know why people want to buy their versions of classic songs.

But I will say that, like Idol often does, Glee has sent me off to buying some of the originals. Like Jazmine Sullivan’s “Bust Your Windows.” Because when you’re pissed off at your man? Driving around with that song cranking makes you feel like the bad girl you just really aren’t ;)

#Somehow, eating wheaties while watching sportscenter makes me feel exponentially more aggro. 5 minutes ago via Twitter for iPhone

  15. I have bought some of the AI cover songs, mainly from Kris & Adam. But even with them, I did the pick and choose thing — didn’t come close to getting them all. So while I could see downloading the occasional song from Glee, I don’t see the appeal in all these Glee albums. But they are selling really well, so what do I know :)

  16. But they are selling really well, so what do I know

Haha, I feel that way about a LOT of the music that’s selling well right now.

LOL, and I envy David his Sportscenter… I have little kids who are hard to motivate to get moving in the a.m. so they’re allowed to watch cartoons while I walk the dogs and such. So instead of sports, I get… Nicktoons.

  17. I don’t mind Glee as a t.v. show — it’s goofy and usually fun. But I don’t know why people want to buy their versions of classic songs. I have no interest in hearing these versions other than during the t.v. episode they are featured on.

I feel EXACTLY the same way as you. I know people who buy their music though. I don’t get it. Unless it’s a really cool/fun mash-up or a drastically different version of a pop song, I don’t like the Glee versions as stand alone tracks. None of the cast have the kind of voices that I like to hear outside of the context of the show. Lea Michele is great, but too Broadway for my regular tastes. Amber Riley is fun, but she’s not better than the original R&B divas she’s covering. Finn… no comment. I actually like the guy who plays Puck’s voice, but he never really gets solos.

So if someone does something I like as much as, say, Cook’s Billie Jean or Casey’s Don’t or Adam’s Mad World, then I’d buy it.

I agree– those are good examples. Except I’d replace Adam’s Mad World example with Ring of Fire or Black or White or something, cuz my Adam Lambert tastes are weird. I don’t like him on slow/ballady songs, haha. And I was so obsessed with Donnie Darko and Gary Jules’ version of MW that I still prefer that version. Just like I appreciate Kris and Crystal/Lee doing Falling Slowly, but I’m perfectly happy with my Once soundtrack version.

  20. tierbee, good luck!

I love Carrie and Randy’s “I Told You So”. Glad to hear they’re going to do something else together.

I love that review of Danny’s show! I think maybe my favorite line is its conclusion “…this terrific showman inspired us all to respect our friends and neighbors as well as run out to buy the new CD.” Yay to that!

  21. Really nice article and interview with Casey’s mom in his hometown Mineral Wells Index:

Sony Signs Casey: Local singer, songwriter and guitarist parlays Idol journey into major recording contract

Excited about another Randy Travis/Carrie Underwood collaboration! I love the last one they did.

The Kings of Leon have every right to turn down offers from Glee, etc., but they’re so full of themselves, it kinda bugs. And they’re *so* NEVER going to live down that pigeon sh*t debacle!

  22. I laugh at KoL, they are so close to becoming yesterdays news. It took them forever to get real recognition in the US because they wouldn’t allow their stuff to be licensed for anything. Now they are coming off their breakthrough album and doing zilch to keep the momentum. They are one flop album from obscurity.

  23. So if someone does something I like as much as, say, Cook’s Billie Jean or Casey’s Don’t or Adam’s Mad World, then I’d buy it.

Except, if it really bothered you to buy an “American Idol” song, you could have easily bought Chris Cornell’s version of “Billie Jean” or Gary Jules’s version of “Mad World.”

Sometimes one just likes an Idol’s — or a Glee cast member’s — version of a song better than the original or an “original” cover. I never gave Celine Dion’s “Taking Chances” a second thought but just loved it when Lea sang it on Glee, so I bought it. My son loves it too. Same thing happened when I heard that version of “Dancing With Myself” that Kevin McHale did.

Sometimes you just buy a song on impulse because you like it. It’s not that deep and it’s hardly blasphemy either.

  24. The Kings of Leon have every right to turn down offers from Glee, etc., but they’re so full of themselves, it kinda bugs.

They are waaaay too worried about being “real” and being cool and not being “selling out” which I always found a bit of a laugh – what constitutes selling out, exactly? Or not? Though I will say I loved their last album, a lot, and if a new one was good I’d buy it. Because let’s face it, if I never bought music from pretentious musicians…

  25. Except, if it really bothered you to buy an “American Idol” song, you could have easily bought Chris Cornell’s version of “Billie Jean” or Gary Jules’s version of “Mad World.”

I don’t know why it bothers people that Glee does cover songs, or why some songs are “cool” and some songs are “uncool” (or bands for that matter). Everyone does cover songs. So many of the songs on the radio are cover songs… that’s always happened. Hell, half the time I wasn’t aware a song was a cover until I hear the original and I’m like – whoa, where did that come from? And it’s even ok to like multiple versions of a song. I have Adam’s and Gary Jules’s Mad World. I have Kris’s Falling Slowly and the original version. That holds true in a bunch of spots on my iPod. But apparently I’m tragically unhip musically anyway because I have – gasp – REO Speedwagon on my iPod. (I can’t help it, dammit, I love “Here With Me” and “Time for me to Fly”).

  26. Except, if it really bothered you to buy an “American Idol” song, you could have easily bought Chris Cornell’s version of “Billie Jean” or Gary Jules’s version of “Mad World.”

That’s true. People who bought the AI versions of the aforementioned songs probably preferred David/Adam’s voices to Chris/Gary’s. I don’t think buying Glee songs is “blasphemous”, but based on my own personal tastes, I really don’t get it. I guess it’s because I don’t generally prefer the Glee cast’s voices. I’m sure there are lots of people who do. So in that sense, I guess I do get it, lol.

KOL isn’t going anywhere. Their antics and snobbery may mean they’ll never be as big and widely loved as a band wanting to be the next U2 or Coldplay, and maybe they’ll get no more big mainstream hits, but they have a really passionate following that won’t go away as long as they keep making good music.

  27. People who bought the AI versions of the aforementioned songs probably preferred David/Adam’s voices to Chris/Gary’s.

Or they are people like me who have crazy music tastes and might like several versions of the same song ;) . I adore Gary Jules’s version of “Mad World” but love Adam’s too – they are both very different, and both very beautiful. Of course my iPod runs from the soundtrack to West Side Story to Otis Redding to the B52s to aforementioned confessed REO Speedwagon to Indigo Girls to Jay Z so… I’m all over the place.

  28. If anything, regarding the Glee covers or AI covers, it gives exposure to the orginal artist, no matter how good or how horrible the cover may be. For me at least, I know I have looked up one or two songs not knowing the orginal artist and downloading the original song.

    ETA: What tierbee said. :)

  29. For me at least, I know I have looked up one or two songs not knowing the orginal artist and downloading the original song.

    Yep, me too. Often.

  30. Kinda interesting looking at insular American reaction with regard to Kings of Leon. Kings of Leon is huge outside of America, their last album sold more in the UK alone than in the US. They are at Coldplay level in popularity at the least. Even if they don’t sell a single album in the US again it wouldn’t bother them in the least. And if they dont’ sell any more album in the US, that would say more about the problem rock music faced in the US than about the Kings of Leon.

Any artist has the right to control how their work may be used. You may say for example Pink Floyd is snobbish in not wanting their album tracks to be sold singly, but that is how they see their work – the whole album should be experienced complete and not as a single song isolated from its context. Same for Kings of Leon, if they think using it in Glee would demean their work, then that is entirely within their right to refuse them.

  31. Sony was out doing a sweep of You Tube again. Some of my favorite versions of “that song” by DC at BG are now down today. And since the only people that knew where to find them easily were die hard fans, thanks (evil suit people) for sticking it to ’em. :(

Yep. They have a huge following that would be quite happy if they never made another album as commercial as this last one ever again. They’ve been thriving for years without the pop charts, so they’ll be just fine.

  33. if they think using it in Glee would demean their work

Hell, Idol singers are a hundred times better than the wannabes that are singing on glee and Idol can’t get many peeps to release their music to the show. I don’t blame publishers for putting the kabosh on their music being sung on a trite TV episodic experiment that will run its course pretty quickly.

But, I am surprised that KOL doesn’t let theatrical releases use their music. Hell, I think I have bought more stuff because I heard it as background in the movies than I ever did by hearing stuff on the radio.

  34. Same for Kings of Leon, if they think using it in Glee would demean their work, then that is entirely within their right to do.

Of course it is. It’s in the artists’ right to control use of their music. But it is also the right of us Joe Q Public-y sorts of people to have opinions about it, no matter how opinionated or out there the opinions might be :) I agree that KOL will be fine, commercial success or not. If anything they seem pretty darn annoyed by all that comes with commercial success.

  35. Some of my favorite versions of “that song” by DC at BG are now down today.

They better have some big plans for that song… they never did that with You & I (I refuse to call it U & I unless it is a Prince song) did they? Bah.

  36. Or they are people like me who have crazy music tastes and might like several versions of the same song . I adore Gary Jules’s version of “Mad World” but love Adam’s too – they are both very different, and both very beautiful.

Whereas the only reason I would own several versions of the same song is if they’re drastically different. To me, David’s Billie Jean and Adam’s Mad World are, for all intents and purposes, the same as the Chris Cornell and Gary Jules versions. Just like, say, Carly Smithson’s Heart covers in S7—they were straight up covers. I may choose to AI version if I prefer a certain voice, but otherwise, they’re so similar, there’s no reason for me to own both. On the other hand, I will own both Kris’s cover of Heartless and Kanye’s, and David’s cover of Always Be My Baby and Mariah’s, because they’re really different. I like the originals and the covers. I like Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire and Adam’s. But I wouldn’t get both Adam’s and Dilana’s, because they’re so similar—and I prefer Adam’s. That’s just the way I operate. With Glee, I admit the show’s covers sound really different from their originals, but usually not IMO for the better. Another taste thing, I’m not a big fan of the showtune style of singing that musicals have. I watch Broadway shows and enjoy them but I won’t buy the Rent or Phantom CD as much as I love the songs during the show. Though I liked the Spring Awakening soundtrack, cuz some of that music sounded almost pop-punk.

  37. They better have some big plans for that song… they never did that with You & I (I refuse to call it U & I unless it is a Prince song) did they? Bah.

I haven’t heard it yet. And now it looks like I won’t. Boo.

  38. Another taste thing, I’m not a big fan of the showtune style of singing that musicals have.

That’s probably more why I don’t download the Glee stuff, I’m not really into the group number treatment. But clearly lots of people are!

  39. tinawina

I haven’t heard it yet. And now it looks like I won’t. Boo.

Do you ever check your messages at DCO? Now might be a good time to do so. ;)

  40. I *still* can’t get Paper Heart out of my head. But I’m very sad for not being able to *watch* it since… well. It’s pretty to watch.

Wonder how David’s la la la’s went in the studio yesterday? LOL

  41. I *still* can’t get Paper Heart out of my head. But I’m very sad for not being able to *watch* it since… well. It’s pretty to watch.

NGL, I totally downloaded several videos from youtube last week before they were taken down, and I’ve also ripped MP3’s of both PH and the other soundchecked new song (crappy quality and talking people be damned!) for my iPod. Hee.

  42. Everybody, I need a moment of privacy with wordnerdachie.

Umm… will you marry me? :)

So, now that I just happened to stumble upon a copy of a song that may or may not exist on “the internets” (as some of our friends in congress would call it)… I love it! Is this the single? I wouldn’t mind it at all if it was. :)

  43. tinawina, I’m sorry to have to do this …. but I already have a hubby and I don’t think that he wants to share. So my answer is no. :)

I really like this song, too. All of the young people in my family give it a thumbs up.

  44. Same for Kings of Leon, if they think using it in Glee would demean their work, then that is entirely within their right to refuse them.

Of course it’s within their rights! It’s also within the rights of every humorist in the US to make fun of their ridiculous over-reaction to a little bird shit! ;-)

    Bluff the Listener

  45. So, now that I just happened to stumble upon a copy of a song that may or may not exist on “the internets” (as some of our friends in congress would call it)… I love it! Is this the single? I wouldn’t mind it at all if it was.

I just happened to stumble on some song on the internets myself that I really love and really wouldn’t mind having as the new single. I am hoping it is *something* important based on the fricking tubey rampage they’ve had ripping videos down, lol. Why so super sekrit, suit-type peeps? We’re still going to *buy* it you know. We’d be BUYING STUFF NOW if you had stuff for us to buy! Hee.

  46. hoping it is *something* important based on the fricking tubey rampage they’ve had ripping videos down, lol. Why so super sekrit, suit-type peeps? We’re still going to *buy* it you know. We’d be BUYING STUFF NOW if you had stuff for us to buy! Hee.

Seriously, I don’t get this rampage and secrecy either. It’s not like it’s a leaked demo or recorded track. I get that those suck, and should be taken down… but we’re talking frickin’ youtube videos of a live performance! Sony must know that pretty much ALL David’s concerts are video’d in their entirety, and David must’ve gotten permission to perform PH (rhymes with Draper Smarts) at Busch Gardens. Lots of artists do this. Ingrid Michaelson was performing songs from her latest album on tour well before it came out, and those videos were all over youtube. What’s the big deal?

  47. I don’t get it either. There will just be more copies popping up every… single … day, if you just take the time to search for them. It’s like they’re … stuck in the rain, stuck in the rain. ;)

  48. Maybe it’s just some bored Sony intern whose mom tossed out his Whac-A-Mole game and is now seeking revenge! ;-)

  49. Maybe it’s just some bored Sony intern whose mom tossed out his Whac-A-Mole game and is now seeking revenge!

    Haha, maybe so!

You can’t keep a good Caper Fart down. Nope.

  50. You can’t keep a good Caper Fart down. Nope.

Not when they’re stuck in the rain, stuck in the rain… ;)?

  51. Not when they’re stuck in the rain, stuck in the rain…

Haha, nope. And now that I may or may not have found a video of a song that inspired Caper Fart… I can’t stop watching it. Help!

  52. Did you notice they even went after the link in the Radio (ABC sponsored) news blurb that was tweeted about today? http://bit.ly/aP9mIY They really want to keep this song off of YouTube. That might bode well for me in the song pick contest at DCO, since I picked it as the next single way back around July 10-11.

But since I might have just gotten another HD video & mp3 of the song loaded into my personal iTouch, I really don’t care. However, please give me something to buy soon, Mr. fancy suit man.

God forbid anyone promotes the guy, lol. *I want to buy stuff* – why am I thwarted from buying stuff?!

Really?! Wow! Based on the title and cowriters, you picked it as a single? Sweet! Any other fun predictions you’ve made?

  55. However, please give me something to buy soon, Mr. fancy suit man.

Seriously. My Cook money is all laid out in nice stacks all ready to be spent on the CD, concerts and merch. What’s a girl gotta do to have a record company part her from her money around here?

  56. *whistling* … what do I see in that u tubey place? There seems to be something new today….. Oh, it’s from a Saturday evening? Nice. *strolls out*

  57. I was strolling through the tubeys myself and found something from a certain Sunday and it sure is pretty. *La la la* (TM Cook)

  58. Did you see this in the sales thread today?

Archie’s vid should be on MTV/Vh1 soon. I think the label had to make some edits and blurs to make the video acceptable to MTV’s standards. (You can’t show logos. There are a lot of cell phones in Arhcie’s vids. And there’s that one shot where the girl takes her top off. Just kidding.)”

That is way cool. I am anxious to see David on VH1 again. :-)
