‘Idol’ hopefuls crowd AT&T Park

An estimated 7, 000 people filed through AT&T Park on Tuesday, the first day contestants could register to hold a spot for auditions Thursday – the registration office will stay open every minute until 8 a.m. the day of the tryouts – and indulge their fantasies of winning the everlasting fame the show promises.

Patrick Lynn, the show’s supervising producer who has organized the cattle lines since it all started in 2002, said he’d noticed that the contestants today are more savvy to the show’s process, seemingly born with innate “Idol” knowledge.

“I called last season Idol 2.o, ” Lynn said. “We’d finally reached a point where all of the people who’ve grown up with the show are now able to try out for it. They know how it all works.”

Taylor Hicks

Taylor Hicks isn’t the kind of guy who waits for things to happen or makes excuses when life throws him a curve ball. Even if his recording studio was in his kitchen and he had to hand deliver copies of his self-produced, handmade albums door-to-door to get his music out, he’d do it. If he had to stick CDs in the windshield wipers of every car in the Walmart parking lot, he’d do that too.

NEW YORK — Jordin Sparks, who at 17 became the youngest performer to win American Idol, is about to make her Broadway debut playing another precocious overachiever.

But Nina, the working-class character she portrays in the Tony Award-winning musical In the Heights, initially gets our attention not by surpassing expectations, as Sparks did on Idol’s 2007 season, but by failing to live up to them.

So, was the final video result worth all that suffering? In a word, yes. Esteemed cinematographer Aaron Platt, who directed the dreamy desert clip, did a superb job of creating an artsy, moody, cinematic vibe, shooting Kris amid Discovery Channel-esque sandscapes, dramatically crashing chandeliers, sepia-toned silhouettes…and, um, Pat Monahan.

When TV’s leading men and women leave

The heart of groundbreaking drama “ER” continued to beat after the movie-bound George Clooney pulled the plug on his heroic character, Dr. Doug Ross. The laughs kept coming even though Shelley Long’s Diane Chambers stopped slinging cocktails at ” Cheers, ” and “Star Trek’s” USS Enterprise stayed aloft for decades after William Shatner vacated the captain’s chair.

But “American Idol” without acerbic, tough-love judge Simon Cowell, “Larry King Live” sans Larry King, and “The Office” minus its clueless boss, Steve Carell as the always inappropriate Michael Scott — can the franchises thrive, even survive, without them?

In Focus: Chris Colfer’s Journey From “Social Llama” to Glee

The thing to know about Glee actor Chris Colfer is that he’s not like his character, Kurt.

McKinley High’s fashionable soprano is comfy both performing in 10-inch-high Lady Gaga heels and coaching the football team on how to put a ring on it. He’s the group’s lone, self-assured outcast, virtually free of self-pity and most content in Alexander McQueen.

Colfer says he, on the other hand, was more of a “social llama” in high school.
