PS Mag: From winner to idol

In a somewhat surreal moment for the 28-year-old, she was called back to the Idol stage in May to join one of this year’s contestants, Lauren Alaina, for her finale rendition of Carrie’s hit Before He Cheats.

”She just looked at me in a way that I was like, ‘oh my gosh, this was me when I was on the show and I got to sing with Rascal Flatts’, ” Carrie said. ”I’m singing with her and she’s looking at me like I looked at them. It was just amazing to think that I’ve been doing this for over six years and been all over the place and people know my stuff and now there’s this new generation of country music people coming into our little world that listen to me. Music legends from the Stones to Bob Dylan call on producer Don Was for expert guidance

Fagenson — the 58-year-old über-producer better known as Don Was — had his ears on a production career from his youthful days in Oak Park, where he studied songs for their sonic nuances and toyed with a primitive sound-on-sound tape machine, giddily layering parts in a kind of lo-fi symphony.

His enthusiasm would eventually earn him some of the most cherished credits in the music business: lead producer on albums by the likes of Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Willie Nelson and Elton John.

Now he’s immersed in one of the busiest stretches of his career, fattening up his already thick résumé with new work by Lucinda Williams, Ziggy Marley and TV talent champs Scott McCreery and Michael Grimm, with records on the way from John Mayer, Kris Kristofferson and the Detroit Cobras.

She may look a million dollars, but she’s perfectly capable of sending up her diva self.
