‘Idolatry’: Lee DeWyze on ‘pitchy’ singing, ‘confidence’ critiques, and his alternate ‘Beautiful Day’

Lee DeWyze may describe himself as a simple kind of man, but he was also a guy with a strategy that took him all the way to the American Idol season 9 title. Step one: Avoid drama during Hollywood Week (as if he would’ve played it any other way). Step two: Front-load with current tunes in the semifinals. Step three: Don’t get bogged down obsessing over the judges’ critiques. Lee stopped by Amalia lounge in New York City to dish his winning Idol run, tackling criticism that some of his performances were “pitchy, ” explaining his surprised initial reaction to Simon Cowell’s “judge’s choice”-round selection of “Hallelujah, ” and describing which current artists might potentially shape the sound of his major-label debut disc.

American Idol’s Michael Lynche sees screaming crowds, nostalgia in hometown visit today

ST. PETERSBURG — At times, it was a bit like Beatlemania, as hordes of screaming kids descended on former American Idol contestant and St. Petersburg native Michael Lynche today during a stop at Thurgood Marshall Middle School.

A lucky few got one of his patented bear hugs, running away in a giddy mess to tell their friends (photo by Times staffer Chris Zuppa, taken at Gibbs).

It was the kind of homecoming local fans had hoped to have during the competition week ago. But Lynche was dropped from the show days before Idol filmed its Homecoming Week, where the top-rated show’s cameras follow the three top contestants to their homes.

“We are proud of you. Say, we are proud of you, ” the Gibbs students chanted as Lynche, accompanied by his wife and child, made his way through the crowd.

Lynche’s visit this morning at his alma mater, Gibbs High School, was just one stop in a day chock full of them as the singer shared memories at some of the places that shaped him before he wowed audiences and judges alike on the national television show. ‘American Idol’ Season Nine: Neither Lee, Crystal Nor Casey Thought They’d Win

Modesty is an underrated trait — unless you’re a finalist on “American Idol, ” a show that exists solely to discover music’s next great megastar. The whole point of appearing on it is to win, thereby securing a recording contract and the opportunity to become unbelievably famous and wealthy. Modesty, it would seem, has no place on the “Idol” stage. Except for the just-completed ninth season, that is.

Carrie Underwood: On the ride of her life

Carrie Underwood is all smiles, curled up in a chair in an Indianapolis hotel room, but she’s keeping the tissues close by. “Oh, my gosh, we’ve been in so many allergy-infested places, and everything’s blooming, so pardon me if I’m sniffing a lot.”

Underwood is riding such a personal and professional high these days, not even a blast of pollen and pollution can dampen her spirits. At a time when other big hitmakers — Taylor Swift among them — are making their own splash, Underwood has emerged as the reigning Queen of Country. At age 27, she’s a huge star with a multigenerational fan base that fills stadiums and racks up music sales by buying both her CDs and digital songs. Translation: She’s a star with staying power.

“She’s probably the best female vocalist to come out of Nashville maybe ever, ” saysfellow country star and friend Miranda Lambert. “People in the industry really respect her. She’s the epitome of a star.”

Kimberly Caldwell has turned heads on “American Idol” and the TV Guide Channel, and things were pretty much the same when she was 17 … only, back then, she was turning heads for an entirely different reason: She was the girl positively covered in blood.

It seems that, back in high school, Caldwell was the talk of her prom, although not for any of the reasons the bubbly Texas blonde would’ve preferred. And on the next episode of MTV’s ‘When I Was 17, ” she spills the details about the prom-night mishap that haunts her to this day.

A World Cup without Simon Cowell? Oh, I don’t think so

The World Cup: an event with a bit of potential, which suffers cruelly from being almost the last area of global entertainment not monetised by Simon Cowell. The World Cup: a nice enough idea, but clearly one of the many bits of public life – with the possible exception of the television schedules – that needs more James Corden. The World Cup: a man-made disaster just crying out to be saved by a celebrity community that cares.

We begin with the soon-to-be Sir Simon Cowell, and what is being described as “his big World Cup masterstroke”. Unfortunately, that masterstroke isn’t “staying right out of it”. Rather, the Karaoke Sauron has put together a World Cup song, which will see Dizzee Rascal duet with James Corden on a rap-updated version of the Tears For Fears hit Shout – and which will be premiered during Saturday’s live final of Britain’s Got Talent.

‘So You Think You Can Dance’ recap: Viva Las Vegas | ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Central Recap

As we’ve learned in pop culture, sometimes things need to get wonky in order to help you really appreciate the good. We need an Ocean’s Twelve in order to enjoy an Ocean’s Thirteen. We need a Bai Ling Lost episode to make even the worst Kate-centric episodes seem mind-blowing. We need a Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones to make Revenge of the Sith feel refreshingly Lake Naboo-talk free.

Summer tours may be in a slump, but are Idols recession-proof?

This summer’s concert season is shaping up to be one of the most challenging yet for promoters and touring acts alike. Recent weeks have brought news of cancellations across all genres, from Christina Aguilera’s nationwide tour to select dates by the Eagles to the first Country Throwdown festival, which Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman blamed on multiple treks “cannibalizing one another, and someone ends up with lower ticket sales.” Could “American Idol” alumni also be feeling the heat on the road this summer?

Consider how many acts are crisscrossing the country in the coming months: There’s Carrie Underwood’s tour, which plays on through the fall, Chris Daughtry’s band, Daughtry, is closing out an 85-date U.S. and Canada trek at the end of the month, Season 2’s Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard are teaming up for their own three-week outing, kicking off in July, Adam Lambert’s much anticipated GlamNation Tour starts on Friday, and, of course, there’s the “‘American Idol’ Live!” tour, starring Season 9’s Top 10.

Posted: Adam Lambert Talks About His Inspiration For The Glam Nation Tour

Note: We just received the following transmission direct from Adam and wanted to pass along the scoop on his Glam Nation tour to you right away. Remember to follow Adam for the entire month of June on VH1 Posted. Take it away, Adam!

The stage has always been home to me since I was a child. With a background in musical theater, the prospect of making my debut album into a live show has always been so exciting. The time had finally come to create a tour!

The first thing I wanted to decide upon was a world where the show would take place. This whole process started shortly after the release of my first Remix EP. A previously unreleased track called “Voodoo” that I wrote with Sam Sparro gained a lot of praise. I was inspired to write it after my first trip to New Orleans. The city has such a rich history and an incredible energy. I was listening to the song on a plane ride and all of a sudden was hit with an epiphany: What if the entire concert was set there?
