A bodyguard and slew of protective “American Idol” producers weren’t going to stop Vince Ferrara from embracing longtime friend Lee DeWyze after last Friday’s massive homecoming concert at Arlington Park.

“I admit I kissed the guy on the cheek because he’s like my brother, ” Ferrara, 26, said. “He was so overcome with emotion after everything that happened that day.”

Casey James looks back on his time in ‘La-La Land’

He tried out for season 9 on a lark, having never before watched a single episode of “American Idol, ” but Casey James of Cool, Texas, made it about as far as you can go in the competition, albeit one step shy of the final showdown.

But don’t cry for Casey. The blue-eyed blues man has amassed a large and loyal following and is well on his way to a career in music, no matter which direction he ends up taking. As for his time spent in L.A.? It seems this small-town Texan has developed a new respect for us Hollywood types. As he so neatly writes in our “La-La Land” questionnaire, “It seems this is the place to make dreams come true.”

Eric Hutchinson: ‘I would love to co-write a song’ with Casey James

Although Casey James’ choice of Eric Hutchinson’s “OK, It’s Alright With Me” didn’t save him from elimination this week, it did introduce the 2009 iTunes hit to millions of “American Idol” viewers who may not have heard it before. Casey said he chose it because “it’s a lot like the stuff that I write.” So how did the song’s creator feel about the rendition? We reached out to singer-songwriter Eric Hutchinson, who’s in London working on the follow-up to 2008’s “Sounds Like This, ” for his reaction.

“Casey did a nice job with it, ” Eric said. “It was definitely weird to watch someone else singing it up there on the ‘Idol’ stage — I’ve seen a taping of the show before and I don’t know how people handle the nerves! — but I was really flattered to have him sing it.”

Carrie Underwood’s Tour Stops at Arco Arena for the Fans and the Pets

Did Carrie Underwood visit Sacramento for the dogs or her fans?

Both. Pop country singer and five-time Grammy Award winner Carrie Underwood played Thursday at Arco Arena on her “Play On” Tour. Just hours before her sold-out concert, she and Pedigree Brand held a news conference, for the Pedigree Pet Adoption Drive to donate to Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary. Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary, a no-kill animal shelter in the Sacramento area, was presented with a check for $10, 000 for its efforts in rescuing dogs and finding homes for them. The Pedigree Pet Adoption drive is encouraging Facebook users to become fans. In return, the pet food company will donate one bowl of food to shelter dogs per fan.

‘Glee’ tour a love letter to fans who never stopped believin’

Anyone uncertain about the pop culture phenomenon status of Fox’s hit “Glee” should just take a trip to see the kids perform live.

Well, that is of course if you were lucky enough to snatch up tickets to the four-city engagement that sold out quicker than you could say Sue Sylvester.

Before Thursday’s live show — the first of four at Gibson Amphitheatre — began, pandemonium ensued in the audience. Inside the packed theater, Jesse St. James (excuse me, Jonathan Groff), Rachel’s dreamy yet suspicious love interest, was spotted amongst the fans who tune in each week.
