‘Idol’ may show video of Durbin’s Santa Cruz homecoming on Wednesday’s show

James Durbin fans still upset that their hero was bounced from “American Idol” last week may not have many reasons to continue to watch “Idol.”

But there’s this: “Idol” producers have asked the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and local news outlets for footage of last Saturday’s “Durbin Day” celebration in Santa Cruz. Idol Meter: Does Haley have a shot?

The ultimate dark horse: Haley Reinhart (21)

Haley’s new pattern of a disastrous first song and triumphant follow-up has worked out wondrously well, and she can’t be counted out. In her favor: the unprecedented prospect of two country singers in the finals, which may be one too many for the American public. Working against her: the almost-unprecedented prospect of two girls in the finals, which would mean the defeat of the immensely popular Scotty. Best case: Haley pulls out another well-timed showstopper, blows by Lauren and pouts past Scotty in an unpredictable final.

Haley Reinhart’s bumpy, sincere road to ‘Idol’s’ top 3

Say it with me: Haley Reinhart. The name of “American Idol’s” reigning big surprise doesn’t quite roll off the tongue, does it?

“Idol” never simply crowns a voice; it defines a brand. The details define and reinforce a contestant’s appeal, from back story to song choice to sartorial style to naturalness onstage.

Reinhart, now one of the show’s three survivors, has taken quite a while to get herself together as a marketable star. Her slow, uneven evolution contrasts strikingly with that of her two remaining rivals.

David Cook Performs at STAR Lounge

“I think we put out the first record so fast and then immediately went on the road, ” Cook said. “We were on the road for almost a year and I got off the road and had all these experiences that I hadn’t dealt with. Great things like traveling the world, and then on the flipside of that, things like losing my brother. So when we got off the road and starting writing all that stuff just kind of resurfaced. It just became really apparent as I was dealing with all that stuff and trying to write about it from an honest perspective that I needed to take the time with these songs to get them right.”

Randy Jackson Says ‘American Idol’ Ladies ‘Gotta Slay It’ To Win

“This has to be their best performances of their time on ‘Idol, ‘ ” Jackson said. “It has to be the best song choices and they have judges’ pick this week, so we pick one but, also, they gotta slay it, dude, out of the park, ” he emphasized with a few of his trademark Randy-isms. “Now it’s time to take all the gloves off, yo.”

“It’s annoying because ‘Idol, ‘ of all shows, really goes with what the public demands, whether we like it or not, ” he insisted. “And, of course, we didn’t like to see Casey [Abrams] going. We didn’t like to see Pia [Toscano] going. We didn’t like to see James going. But someone has to go, by the very nature of it being a competition.”

Dancing With the Stars Eliminee Ralph Macchio Calls Out the Judges!

When we asked Ralph if he had any regrets, he insists that performance-wise, he had none. “Not one in performance, that’s for sure. There were tough days, but I showed up every day, even the days I was exhaustive, ” he tells us. “At one point I regretted not saying certain things when I heard certain criticism from the judges. But a week or two ago I said, ‘You know, I should speak up a little more, ‘ because it was becoming evident that the playing field isn’t completely level. But I held back and I still think it was the right thing by taking the high road and not saying anything.”

Later, he did admit to wanting to make it all the way to the end, if only for his partner. “I would have liked to have been in the finals. That was the goal. I wanted to get [Karina] there. She deserves it more than anyone.”

‘Glee’: Jane Lynch responds to last night’s shocking death of [SPOILER]

EW managed to talk to star Jane Lynch yesterday at Fox’s upfronts and she admitted that the hour was a tough one to film. “People with down syndrome rarely last past 30, ” says Lynch. “Robin is 55. So this really hit home. Her sister is there with her all the time, Sharon. They have a very tight relationship. So it was very bittersweet. The funeral was awful [to shoot] with the kid’s singing ‘Pure Imagination.’ It was really rough and I will miss her very much. I love working with Robin!”

Co-creator/executive producer Ryan Murphy made sure Lynch was comfortable with the plot twist before moving forward with it. Says Lynch, “He took me aside at a party and said ‘I want your blessing on this before we move forward.’ I said, ‘It sounds like a really great storyline.’ It’s the thing that will break Sue Sylvester’s heart and get to where she lives.”
