Idol Headlines for 05/11/20 – The Evening Edition

‘Idol’ finalist Casey James is the King of Cool

COOL, Texas – Casey James isn’t just an “American Idol” heartthrob. The guitar-playing crooner is also the King of Cool.

Cool, Texas, that is.

The tiny ranching and farming community where James grew up is rallying around the musician who is one of the last four contestants left in this season’s show.

A marquee outside the Cool Community Center reads “Am. Idol Casey James!” At his former high school in nearby Millsap, a banner proclaiming “MHS (hearts) Casey James” hangs over the main entrance, where the doors are covered with dozens of signs: “Vote Casey — He’s the Best” and “Casey James Rocks!”

True to himself: The case for Casey James

Casey James is no pretender. He is who he is, and there’s just nothing anyone can do about it.

That’s what I like most about him.

James has been heralded as the most musically talented contestant this season, and possible ever on “American Idol.” It’s no accident he’s been at the top of the Idolholics’ weekly power rankings for most of the season.

Chicago is getting excited about the prospect of a Lee DeWyze visit later this week, which will take place if Lee advances to the final three on Wednesday.

Lee’s one-day hometown return would take place on Friday and is set to include a visit to a Fox studio in Chicago, a few local radio interviews, an appearance at an AT&T store, a stop at Wrigley Field to throw out the first pitch at a Chicago Cubs game (vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates) and a three-song post-race concert at Arlington Park, a horse-racing track not far from his hometown, the Chicago-area suburb of Mt. Prospect.

VIDEO: Idol Confessions with Brooke White

By sheer coincidence, season 7’s Brooke White stopped by the L.A. Times video studio on the two-year anniversary of her own “American Idol” elimination! But this eternally bubbly Arizona native, who currently calls the San Fernando Valley home, isn’t crying over spilled milk.

Kimberly Locke on this season’s ‘American Idol’: ‘They just need to get back to the basics of singing’

In an extended new interview in Out magazine, Kimberly Locke, the third-place finisher on Idol‘s second season, talks about keeping former roommate Clay Aiken’s gay secret (“It wasn’t really a secret to me but it wasn’t really my place to push him in any direction”), her upcoming reality show Making the Curve (“It’s about putting together a plus-sized singing group, which I know my gay boys are going to love”), and working with Randy Jackson’s new “strictly dance” label, Dream Merchant 21 (“I don’t think I knew that Randy was so into dance music!”).

Can Carrie Underwood dethrone Taylor Swift at CMT Music Awards?

While reigning country queen Taylor Swift is among the leading contenders in Tuesday’s announcement of the final nominees for the ninth annual CMT Music Awards, she faces a fierce fight with Carrie Underwood.

Taylor Swift landed three nominations, including bids for video of the year and female video for “You Belong to Me.” The teen singing sensation took home these awards last year for “Love Story” and in 2008 for “Our Song.” Swift’s third bid this year is in the collaborative video category for her duet with Kellie Pickler on “Best Days of Your Life.”

On Monday, we had the chance to catch up with “American Idol” Season 6 winner and Jive Records artist Jordin Sparks. We talked to the busy 20-year-old about her upcoming Broadway debut, her guest role on Nickelodeon’s hit TV show “Big Time Rush” and her new “Battlefield” tour.

Just last week, it was announced that Jordin will be joining the cast of “In the Heights” as the lead female role for a limited run. Jordin revealed that it all started with a meeting in New York back in February. “They wanted to speak with me about something else that had to do with the play and gave me tickets to the show [and] the soundtrack to it, ” Jordin said. “I loved the play when I went that night…They didn’t mention anything about joining, so I reached out…then about a week and a half later I got the offer to be on it this fall!”

‘American Idol’s’ Most Under-Appreciated Contestants

American Idol’ may still be the largest platform an aspiring singer could ever dream for, but that doesn’t mean it’s a guaranteed path to stardom. Every week, Ryan Seacrest touts all the millions and millions of votes the contestants get from their loyal fans at home.

Fame is a fickle thing, and nobody knows that more than an ‘American Idol’ contestant. That massive adoring fanbase that catapulted you into the Top 12 and further is suddenly nowhere to be found when the next season rolls around. Do you remember a young woman named Siobhan Magnus? She’s had a huge fanbase throughout this season, but will you remember her next month? Next year? Will she be the next Chris Daughtry, or Vonzell Solomon?

Simon Cowell Heads to Oprah’s New Network

“Extra’s” Terri Seymour asked her good friend what advice he’d give, to which Cowell quipped, “Lie.”

With only six episodes left, Simon Cowell’s time as judge extraordinaire on “American Idol” is nearing an end.

Cowell’s successor won’t be announced until after the show’s May 26 finale, so as not to take away from the competition, but he’s not that sad about leaving.
