Siobhan Magnus lifts veil on new solo track

HYANNIS — The big belting voice blasts through the song.

The signature Siobhan Magnus vocal intensity, made famous last year on “American Idol, ” now appears on her first original single.

Magnus and her manager played the song “Beatrice Dream” for the press Monday, a sneak peek before her first solo track is released on iTunes on Sunday.

The radio-ready, rock/pop song is being released independently on Magnus’ personal label, Snotface Records. Three more songs, already recorded, will be unveiled throughout the year on iTunes, said her manager Tony Raine. By fall, they hope to have an “album’s worth of songs.”

I don’t know why this cracks me up…it just does

Constantine Maroulis tweets, “@kevincovais and me…ha! Ran into him at Grove with Malena!” Kevin Covais came in 11th during Idol Season 5. He’s working on several film projects at the moment, including Men In Black III. Constantine will be leaving the Rock Of Ages tour in July.

Rock musical for dudes

“It’s a musical for dudes. That’s the secret formula, ” Maroulis said in an interview. “Beautiful, sexy women. Flashing, crazy lights. Blazing guitars. It’s got a Judd Apatow style of humor.?.?.?.? The girls want to see a Broadway show and love the guys for bringing them.”

Come 2012, “Ages” will rock multiplexes as well. Director Adam Shankman will follow his “Hairspray” success with a movie version featuring Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Mary J. Blige and Julianne Hough, formerly of “Dancing With the Stars.” Bowie will be played by up-and-comer Diego Boneta, but Maroulis said Shankman asked if he’s interested in a part and discussions are under way.

In July, Maroulis’ work with the “Rock of Ages” stage show will be done. “I’ve set out and accomplished everything I’ve wanted to do, ” he said of the role he’s played for three years.

‘Glee’ takes Manhattan — like the Muppets, but with more screaming

Mayor Michael Bloomberg had a message for the cast of Glee this afternoon: Welcome to Manhattan! At least, that’s the jist of what I think was said at this afternoon’s press conference, held outside the same place Wicked calls home on Broadway.

To be honest, I didn’t hear much between the poor sound at the podium and the chattering foreigners who were arguing with the press over a prime photo-taking position in the crowd. Not that one had to hear much to get the point: Glee‘s in Manhattan filming their season finale, and, like everything else, the city wanted to bring as much attention to it as possible. The surprise? It was a lot of (welcomed?) hoopla — even for the Glee team.

Gleeful Easter

“GLEE” star Darren Criss spent Easter Sunday evening — or “Happy Jesus Zombie Day, ” as he called it — at Don Hill’s for the Dropout party, where he jumped onstage and belted out a song he wrote with Charlene Kaye. A source said Criss was there to support on-off girlfriend Mia Swier, who also performed with her band, Shoot the Freak. When we asked the merry actor if he’s single, he replied, “I’m Irish.” He also talked up his castmates, calling Max Adler, who plays football player Dave Karofsky, a “teddy bear, ” and Heather Morris, who plays ditzy cheerleader Brittany S. Pierce, “the smartest person I know.” The “Glee” stars are in town shooting the season finale.

The TV Column: ‘The Voice’ rises. Here’s what we heard.

Though you can hardly swing a dead cat in any of the top-10 TV markets in the country without hitting a promo for NBC’s new singing competition series “The Voice, ” most TV critics are not getting a chance to see the show in advance of Tuesday night’s unveiling. But NBC held a screening Monday afternoon for fan boys and girls at its digs in Burbank.

The network’s new programming chief, Bob Greenblatt, stopped by briefly but had nothing to say to the crowd. Paul Telegdy, NBC’s head of reality programming, however, kicked things off by telling them that Mark Burnett would not show up, as promised, because he was “stuck in post-production in Santa Monica” and that this very first episode we were about to see had been delivered to the network at 9 o’clock Monday morning.

Interview: “The Voice” Executive Producer Mark Burnett

While there’s no longer a question as to whether or not “American Idol” can survive without Simon Cowell (it’s doing just fine if you haven’t noticed), Cowell’s highly anticipated “X Factor” isn’t the only upcoming series attempting to get a piece of the musical competition ratings pie. Tonight, in fact, NBC launches its latest entry, “The Voice, ” which is based on the popular “The Voice of Holland” series in the Netherlands. “The Voice” differs from “Idol” in that it starts the competition with four coaches – pop songstress Christina Aguilera, singer/rapper Cee Lo Green, singer Adam Levine of Maroon 5 and country star Blake Shelton – merely listening and picking contestants without seeing their faces in order to each build a team of singers that will eventually battle each other to the finish.
