Pia Toscano: Just too beautiful and talented

Oh, the outrage! Oh, the indignation! Two weeks ago, lovely Pia Toscano, over whom judge Steven Tyler had gushed that a million men in a million bars were raising their glasses to her, was voted off “American Idol” and by the public no less. The judges were stunned. Jennifer Lopez practically broke into tears. And Twitter was all atwitter with celebrities voicing their disgust at the injustice. “Who are the people who vote on American Idol?” tweeted Ashton Kutcher. “Baffled, ” wrote actress Minka Kelly. “I may be done for the season, ” groused the normally unflappable Tom Hanks.

Sparks is Cats meow

It’s no surprise that Jordin Sparks calls herself a “Disney girl.” The sixth American Idol winner is as sweet natured and wide eyed as a fairy-tale princess. (Really.)

“The little girl in me always freaks out if Disney reaches out and wants something. I get so excited, ” Sparks, 21, says. She ends almost every sentence with a giggle.

Sparks hasn’t graduated to feature films (yet), but she belts the theme song for African Cats, a documentary that follows families of lions and cheetahs on the African savannah. It’s in theaters this weekend and the third release for Disneynature, following Earth (2009) and Oceans (2010). A portion of the proceeds is being donated to the African Wildlife Foundation.

Catching Up With Sanjaya Malakar

This week, Stefano Langone went home on “American Idol’s” top 7 results show, joining the illustrious ranks of other seventh-place finishers like Jennifer Hudson, Kimberly Caldwell, Ace Young, Ryan Star, Kristy Lee Cook, Anoop Desai, and Tim Urban. But perhaps the most notorious seventh-place contestant is Season 6’s Sanjaya Malakar, who continues to be namechecked in the blogosphere and on E!’s “The Soup, ” despite keeping a relatively low profile in the four years since his elimination. Even Josh Groban tweeted about Sanjaya recently, totally out of the blue. You can’t buy that kind of publicity.

While most artists are vying for the big venues in major cities, growing up in Rockingham made Bucky appreciate those who played smaller towns. “You’d have to go out of town to experience anything like a live concert, ” he recalls to the Augusta Chronicle about growing up in a rural area. “The idea of this tour is to go to places like that, outside of big cities.”
