‘South Gala’ draws Hollywood actors to Little Rock

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – Little Rock will roll out the red carpet for a handful of Hollywood stars – including Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman – for a Saturday evening event celebrating Southern culture and art and hosted by The Oxford American magazine.

Hollywood A-lister Morgan Freeman will accept The Oxford American’s inaugural award for Outstanding Contributions to Southern Culture. The actor, who was born in Memphis, Tenn., and lives outside of Clarksdale, Miss., was an easy choice for the magazine’s staff, Sabin said.

Kris Allen, the reigning American Idol and an Arkansas native, will perform at the gala.

Source: Simon Cowell to Wed in 2011

Insiders, along with his very strong PR team, have stressed that Cowell’s relationship with Hussainy is the real deal and that he is inches away from declaring his love and marriage plans within weeks. The “Idol” judge is not known to show his affections in public, but openly kissed his new squeeze on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” last month.

The romance, though, won’t come to marriage until at least summer 2011. Why then? One insider said, “[Cowell] is the king of spin and knows that a great love story will help sell the U.S. version of [‘X Factor’].

The source added, “Expect no wedding this year at all – 2011 is the year of Simon in the U.S. and he will pull out all the stops needed to become an even bigger success.”

Idolatry’: What is American Idol’s woman problem? And why is Season 9 like ‘Theme Park Idol’?

American Idol’s ninth season was supposed to be all about the ladies. Or at least that’s what early interviews from the show’s judges — and early impressions from the audition rounds and Hollywood Week — led us to believe. But now we’re down to the top 9, and only three ladies remain: Crystal Bow!Er!Sox!, Siobhan Magnus, and two-time bottom-three finisher Katie Stevens. So what exactly went wrong? My cohost Annie Barrett and I tackle this tough question, and also engage in a spirited discussion about which contestants seem destined to wind up as theme-park employees (not that that’s a bad way to make a living, mind you). We also examine the season 9 trajectories of Lee Dewyze and Casey James, and dish how the judges still can’t bring themselves to utter the name of the show’s season 8 champ. (Memo to Simon: Kris finished first, Adam finished second, and guess what? They’re both still winners. Or perhaps you’re still smarting that you wagered two-thirds of your chips on Lil and Danny? Uh-huh, I went there!)

‘American Idol’ castoff Alex Lambert: ‘If I Can Dream’ will show people ‘the real me’

It’s a little after noon on Friday in Los Angeles, and Alex Lambert rolled out of bed five minutes ago. The American Idol season 9 castoff was up until 4:30 a.m. taking Twitter song requests live from fans as they watched him on If I Can Dream, the Web reality series that follows six people trying to make it in Hollywood as actors, singers, and models. The show is available in episodic installments every Tuesday via Hulu, but also offers viewers Big Brother-style access to the house with a 24/7 video feed. But much like BB’s live stream, there are well-noted lulls in action. Large ones. Starting this week, the show pumped up the action a little bit with a new Idol-centric feature. Every week, the housemates will have the person voted off the show over for dinner the Friday following their elimination. Yesterday, they dined with Didi Benami.

Alex Lambert’s shock and awe at post-‘Idol’ ‘Dream’: ‘I felt like I actually had a chance’

It’s not every day you get to witness the start of a new life. We’re not talking “Special Delivery” jargon here, but rather a second chance to see your dream come true, no matter how far-fetched it may have seemed a year, a month or even a week ago.

That was the prevailing emotion felt by all who were present when “American Idol” Top 24 castoff Alex Lambert entered his new home high atop the Hollywood Hills. Joining the cast of the Web reality show “If I Can Dream” as the sixth, well, dreamer, 19-year-old Alex was greeted by his new roommates, Justin Gaston, Giglianne Braga, Kara Kilmer, Amanda Phillips and Ben Elliott, with open arms. Although the conversation was a tad awkward at first (in the dreamers’ defense, there were more than a handful of observers, yours truly included, just milling about, and staring), once Alex got the guitar out and delivered a bit of that blue-eyed soul, everybody relaxed and settled in.

The New Real World

In Idol creator Simon Fuller’s Web experiment, If I Can Dream, young showbiz aspirants live in a house where their lives are broadcast in real-time. Richard Rushfield pays a visit.

Typically, when a reporter profiles a hot, up-and-coming star, the interview is held in some sort of conference room or public space, the questions tightly circumscribed, a publicist standing at the ready to intervene if the conversation drifts into any danger zone.
