Bloomberg lets his ‘Hair’ down in hippie garb, hangs out with cast of Broadway play at fund-raiser

The city’s typically buttoned-down chief executive, fresh off beating term limits, took on hair extensions for his ’60s flashback with the cast of “Hair” at Saturday night’s Inner Circle dinner.

Earlier at rehearsals, Bloomberg joked with former “American Idol” singers Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young, showing off his bell-bottomed jeans and flashing a peace sign.

Despite the dramatic change in appearance, Bloomberg’s long-haired production won’t eclipse the most stunning mayoral performance ever.

Kids Choice Awards Red Carpet: Allison Iraheta Talks Top 10, ‘Slumdog’ Star on His Next Role

Still, Iraheta’s making time to bond with ‘American Idol”s new top 10 finalists — not to mention offer a little advice, and send a big message. “I was hanging with [the Idols] … at … the top 10 party, ” she said. “I was telling them to be true to themselves, [that’s] what’s going to help them. … They’re real — all of them. I really hope the girls take it this year. C’mon girls! Represent.”

“Crystal [Bowersox] … is amazing — home girl with the dreads, ” Iraheta gushed. “I love her guitar playing, she’s really cool.” The ‘Idol’ alum also cautioned the remaining finalists to up the ante. “All of them can sing, ” she said. “‘Idol”s seen everything now. I think they want something different.” Repetition notwithstanding, the juggernaut won a Kids Choice Award for favorite reality show.

It’s a nondescript road sign labeled “Elliston-Trowbridge, ” with signs beneath it pointing to two churches.

‘Me & Bobby McGee’: The Story Behind Crystal Bowersox’s Cover

Once again, one of the highlights of Tuesday night’s episode of “American Idol” — which was focused on songs that had hit No. 1 on the pop charts — was Crystal Bowersox’s performance. Armed with her trusty guitar and her disarming voice, the rocker sang “Me and Bobby McGee, ” which reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971.

Tyler Grady goes ‘Idol’ one better

Tyler Grady of Nazareth, who got farther along on ”American Idol” than any other contestant from Lehigh or Northampton County when he made the show’s Top 24 this spring, on Friday played his first post-”Idol” show with his band, Wailing Waters, at Riverside Barr & Grill in Lower Mount Bethel Township.

And the show had enough ironies to fill an Alanis Morissette song:

Isn’t it ironic that, after being among the first four finalists voted off a show in which contestants sing cover songs, Grady did his best singing on cover tunes?

On stage, my show is pretty eclectic. The production is there to compliment and enhance each song, and my band and I are pretty energetic and have a great time with every audience.

I’ve never been to SA and I’m so excited to not only visit and be a tourist but to play some shows and interact with my fans.

Before any show, my band and I pray and give thanks for having such rad jobs and people to hang out with, and I also have personalised “high five” rituals with each member of my band and crew.

Ukulele rides new wave

FORT WORTH, Texas – After years of plunking happily away on the fringes, the ukulele is now falling into the arms of everyone from Taylor Swift, Jason Mraz and “American Idol” contestants to local bands like Matthew and the Arrogant Sea.

You can hear it in high-school classrooms and in living rooms across the U.S. And in late April, Dallas will host the first-ever Lone Star Uke Fest.

“There’s nothing better than strumming on a ukulele. It really has the sound and the spirit of joy. Everybody needs one, ” says Jason Castro of Rowlett, the dreadlocked fourth-place finalist from “American Idol’s” seventh season.

Simon Cowell and fiancee Mezghan shop for classic cars…and frozen yoghurt

Having been told he’s to be given a prestigious award, you can hardly blame Simon Cowell for treating himself to a little something.

But while most people would celebrate with a nice meal out with their family or possibly a new outfit, the X Factor boss went looking for a new set of wheels.

Just days after being told he is to be honoured with an International Emmy award in recognition of his television work, Cowell, 50, was snapped out with fiancee Mezghan Hussainy looking at fancy motors.

Bumped off! X Factor to dump pregnant Dannii Minogue (Paula May Take Her Place)

Producer Simon Cowell can’t see a way Kylie’s little sister can be a judge as her baby is due in July – right in the middle of auditions.

He is said to be in a quandary about what to do – and looking at ways of offering the 38-year-old a scaled-back role on The X Factor when it returns in the autumn.

But he believes it is unrealistic to think mum-to-be Dannii can do the show and is already considering possible replacements as part of a radical shake-up of the smash hit series.

We can also reveal that Cowell, 50, will hire his 36-year-old fiancée Mezhgan Hussainy as the show’s make-up artist.

Top of the list of people to replace Dannii is Paula Abdul, 47, who notched up eight years as a judge on Cowell’s American Idol before quitting last August.

Paula Abdul pokes fun at self, denies Broadway run, loves Siobhan

All kidding aside, earlier on the pink carpet, Paula denied recent rumors (thanks, Perez) that she’s looking at Broadway as her next career move; specifically, the musical “In The Heights.” As for a possible judging spot on Simon Cowell’s “The X-Factor”? “We’ll have to see on that, ” she told reporters.

Naturally, we also had Season 9 on the brain, like Andrew Garcia’s take on her hit “Straight Up.” “It was fun, ” she said. Paula’s stand-outs so far? “There’s that quirky girl, Siobhan [Magnus] — love her!” she told Idol Tracker. “And Crystal [Bowersox] is wonderful too.” Asked whether either or both were too oddball for “Idol, ” Paula answered, “Talent is talent.”

Concert Review: Daughtry Played The Dark Knight At MGM Grand

At Foxwood’s MGM Grand Theater on Saturday night, vocalist/guitarist Chris Daughtry was playing the part of Batman ? or at least he was trying to.

It was quite fitting, actually, and not just because he and his band took the stage to 1989’s Batman theme. For five years, Daughtry has truly been hard rock’s dark knight ? an American Idol season 5 castoff whose lovelorn lyrics, muscle-bound guitar and bad-boy swagger made him into a music industry hero. His debut album became the fastest-selling rock debut in history, sold over 4 million copies, was the top seller of 2007 and earned 4 Grammy nominations. Men have cheered, women have swooned, and kids can’t sit still. Sounds pretty heroic, no?

Siobhan Magnus rising to pop stardom

In an interview for “American Idol” Magnus said she’s been forced to take on responsibilities in her life, and has good practice handling pressure.

Her father, Alan, said he doesn’t want to “work this into a sob story” but like all families they’ve had hard times.

A local rock musician, Alan is disabled following accidents as a truck driver. His wife, Colleen, was recently laid off after many years working at Border’s Books, Alan said.

As a teenager, Siobhan took on the role of caring for her two little sisters, Ceili, now 10, and Azora, 8.

Partially because of her little sisters, Magnus became a feminist in high school.

“She would always say how much she wanted to go out and talk to girls, especially because of her two little sisters, ” Bonina said.

  1. Copying my post from yesterday’s headlines:

In addition to David Cook, Megan Joy was also at the Better Than Ezra fundraiser last night and got to sing songs onstage with BTE too :)

    She tweeted:

Mornin guys!! Layover in Dallas with @canchop! Next stop New Orleans!!
About to sing!!! Ahhh back on stage…. Feels soooooo good
And uh…. Singing my own songs!? DREAMS COME TRUE :)

    And she sang 3 songs:
    Her First song
One was her song that she wrote Boy Next Door
Another was Black Horse and Cherry Tree

ETA: LOL I just realized my screen name looks like I named myself for Megan! Just to be clear, as much as I enjoy her, that is not why I chose this name ;)

  2. I just read the article by MTV on “Me and Bobby McGee”. I already knew most of this info., but didn’t realize it was one of two songs in history to hit #1 on BB top 100, posthumously. I then thought wouldn’t that be interesting if Crystal does “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” next week because that was the other one in 1968. (I was pretty sure this was the case, but looked it up to confirm.)

Actually, I think this may be too obvious of a choice for her, but she would do an awesome job, esp. if she changed it up. We’ll see.

ETA: there may have been others since theirs, idk.

  3. Thanks for the great links, guys. These days, I don’t even have to read my own comments section to find out what’s in them! Heh.

  4. One more So You think You can Dance change from Nigel Lythgoe:

No top 20! No choosing genres! Only one goes home each week. CHANGE – Less than 4 compete in the Finale!Fox reveals all the changes tomorrow

  5. And [Megan] sang 3 songs:
    Her First song
One was her song that she wrote Boy Next Door
Another was Black Horse and Cherry Tree

Somehow I missed the link to the first song, couldn’t quite make out what it was with that video quality. Great to see her though. I saw Megan tweeting recently that she’d put together 23 new songs? Hope she will announce soon how she will be making her music available.

  6. No top 20! No choosing genres! Only one goes home each week. CHANGE – Less than 4 compete in the Finale!Fox reveals all the changes tomorrow

I don’t need FOX to reveal the changes. I can read between the lines:

First rule change. Only one dancer will leave the competition each week and not two. Many more changes to come by the end of this week.

Translation: One will leave the show with a complete “Bad Day – Journey End” video, but one will just mysteriously disappear. Only the loons on the internet care about the details like who is actually on the show. Joe Q. Public isn’t that obsessive. What will happen to those disappearing contestants is anybody’s guess (hint: indentured servitude in the 19Alphabet coronation single music factories).

Another rule change for SYTYCD this coming Season. The partners will change every single week.

Translation: I will assign the people I like to the good dancers and the people I hate will get assigned to the gimmick/one genre dancers. Don’t worry about odd numbers because rule 1 takes care of that.

This Season will not have a top 20. The peices are falling into place. More tomorrow.

Translation: The ratings for the last season were so bad, Fox is only letting us have 10 episodes.

CHANGE-The competitors will no longer choose their genres of dance.

Translation: This is a trick change. They never really chose them before either. All the same genres were in the hat and there was a different hat for each pair. Psych!

CHANGE – Less than 4 compete in the Finale!

Translation: We only have budget to clear 3 songs for the finale so we’ll just have a top 2. Fox is cutting everywhere, that’s why Paige had to sing “Against All Odds” in AI. That was the only cleared song left. Sorry, Paige. That’s show business!

    Happy Birthday, Papa Bear!!!

  10. Her father, Alan, said he doesn’t want to “work this into a sob story”

Thank you Mr. Magnus, there’s a way to go far in the competition without exposing their private story, that’s good news.

  11. LOL Kirsten. I love the story one show attendee told-after one couple chose their dance style Cat forgot and turned the hat upside down-it was empty. When Nigel finishes screwing up US SYTYCD I guess he’s off to Australia-maybe he can build them a giant stage too? Maybe the tours are done? New show name-Nigel’s Tappers?

  16. I was so hoping that Kris and Katy would get to see the gorillas, so these pics are awesome! The baby is soooo cute! A once in a lifetime experience.

And yes, cookcricket, I think the gorillas are fairly used to having humans around, altho I’m sure we have to follow strict rules while in their presence (like silence).

  17. why are the AI9 contestants doing 2 Ford shoots? They tweeted about doing one on friday (which I thought was weird because the ford shoots are usually on Sundays) and now they are tweeting today about going to another one. I hope we don’t get 2 ford commercials! Eek! Even if it replaces the lip syncing group songs, I don’t think I can handle it.

And it looks like Lee Dewyze isn’t feel well. I hope he gets better for Tuesday.

  18. Really glad Kris and Katy are getting to have some fun on this trip. Kris tweets some amazing photos. Talented guy.

I really enjoyed those articles on Crystal and Siobhan. It will be interesting if they are final two, and I fully expect that.

LLWD is doing well. Altho I don’t follow Kris closely, I get the impression that there will be a 2nd single no matter if KATA is out of 200 or not for a short term. If the 2nd single doesn’t hit and the album is not back after that, then there might not be a 3rd one.

    http://content.usatoday.com/communities/idolchatter/post/2010/03/doomsday-scenario-how-tim-urban-could-win-american-idol/1?csp=34

Brian is right, Tim Urban has just as good of a shot at winning idol this season as anyone else does. Idol has stopped being a singing competition and it truly is now just a popularity contest. As we can see from seasons past, the most talented people don’t always win.

What’s the saying, “be afraid of what you ask for, as you just might get it?” Well, if Idol wants to tap into the Disney tween market, then the tweens are going to pick who they are going to pick for idol. Couple that demographic with those who vote primarily on home city/state pride, then the odds of the person with the most talent winning just got long. The Vote for the Worst bloggers are just smart enough to ride the Urban wave in order to make themselves seem relevant again.

I wouldn’t mind VFTW if they just weren’t so mean to the contestants and their fans, which I don’t think is usually deserved. I do get the whole, “stick it to the producers for being greedy, manipulative and for making deals with the devil sponsors so lets try and screw up the show” premise. It’s the vileness of the comments on that site that turns me off.

Ah, well. I’m not really invested in any contestant this year. I think I could have gotten invested in Alex, but that ship has sailed.

  28. The 40% drop week to week for Kris is weird, it’s way too much, LLWD has still way over 40 mil AI. I hope it’s not true.

  30. I find that40% decline prediction for kata hard to believe. A10% decline for fye makes sense bc most of the CDs in top 100 have been experiencing decreases in the range of 5-15%. and a 40% decline for gokey is not shocking bc his initial sales haven’t stabilized yet. But a 40% decline for kata makes no sense and just seems off

  31. unfoundation: @thedavidcook Can’t wait to travel to Africa w/ you this week & show you our work w/ adolescent girls! Are ur bags (mostly) packed?

  32. LMAO. I.can’t.stop.laughing. I totally read that wrong. hahahahahahahahahahaha help me.

Glad I’m not the only one who found that to be worded oddly. ha.

  33. Re: the 40% drop for Kris. I hope it’s wrong, but keep in mind that with Kris’ low numbers, any drop in sales is going to be a larger % than if he were selling 10 or 20K albums per week. In this case, 40% is 1200 fewer albums than last week. Again, not good, but it’s not like it’s a huge revenue loss for Jive. Mostly, I’m just hoping that the second single is enough of a hit that it compels stores to restock Kris’ album, because he can’t sell it if it’s not on the shelves.

  34. I really enjoyed those articles on Crystal and Siobhan. It will be interesting if they are final two, and I fully expect that.

Yeah, and you know for a weird, erratic season, that would still be a dang good finale.

LMAO. I.can’t.stop.laughing. I totally read that wrong. hahahahahahahahahahaha help me.

Heeee. What were YOU thinking? Me, I know this is all about empowering young women to better themselves and their community which is tres inspiring, but the first time I read “adolescent girls” I pictured Cookie descending the plane to a crowd of Ethopian tweens crying melodramtically and saying stuff like, “Noooo! How could you bring David COOK!? He doesn’t even SHAVE!” ;)

  35. Totally random but true: I heard Heartbreak On Vinyl in a Hollister today.

  36. the first time I read “adolescent girls” I pictured Cookie descending the plan to a crowd of Ethopian tweens crying melodramatically and saying stuff like, “Noooo! How could you bring David COOK!? He doesn’t even SHAVE!” ;)

Ah, I went the other direction & imagined Andrew Lloyd Webber waggling his eyebrows. Stop it Andrew Lloyd Webber, just stop it!

  37. So Susan Boyle is expected to earn $28 million for her follow up album? And she made $8 million for her debut album.

SUSAN Boyle will be laughing all the way to the bank when her second album hits the shops.

The Scottish singer — who shot to fame on music mogul Simon Cowell’s UK TV talent show Britain’s Got Talent — will reportedly pocket a whopping $28 MILLION this year when she releases the follow-up to her debut record I Dreamed A Dream.

Boyle has already made $8 million from her first record.

Another $8m is due in further royalties and merchandising from the album, which sold over 8.5million copies and topped charts worldwide, sources said last night.

  38. Studio57, I heard “Let’s Just Fall in Love Again” in a Hollister. They must like the more obscure idols in that store.

  39. I heard that one before too Jersey! Actually I like the music they play in there for the most part, and that song kind of fit in. I was suprised.

ETA: And good for Subo- I hope her handlers find her the best care possible and she lives the rest of her life comfortably. I’m not being sarcastic just in case anyone was wondering. I wish they would stop dragging her around. Just let her record and sing when she damn well wants to.

  40. So, both of Siobhan’s parents are out of work, father on disability and mother laid-off. I can see why she put so much importance on this past week and thought she had to pull the scream/note out again. She was singing for her little sisters’ futures.

  41. Brian is right, Tim Urban has just as good of a shot at winning idol this season as anyone else does.

Tim Urban isn’t going to win Idol. He’s another Sanjaya at best. He’ll be lucky to make it to middle pack.

I liked the way they evaluated the effects comparing with past seasons.
    For instance:

    # In AI7, another highly popular season, Jason Castro, David Hernandez, and Syesha Mercado would’ve gone home, and Danny Noriega, Luke Menard, and Kady Malloy would have taken their places. One of them would have sung at least three more times. Enough said.

    That puts it into perspective.

  43. I’m surprised Brian went for the sensational. (That’s my department. lol)

Me too MJ. Never have seen him so snarkey either. Perhaps he is really unhappy with this season, or just in a bad mood, lol!

Probably the elimination of Lilly, Alex, Katelyn and maybe Toderick was the cut that went too deep. It’s the wound that won’t heal. I like Crystal but I’m kind of meh on everyone else. And I’m not really that invested in Crystal. So I think everyone is passing the time this season with AI doomsday scenarios! :)

  45. Totally random but true: I heard Heartbreak On Vinyl in a Hollister today.

Really? I frickin’ love that song.

    Heeee. What were YOU thinking?

You don’t want to know. >.> It was the “(mostly)” part that made it even funnier than it would have been.

Also sunchick and wonderings owe me a new iPod! I spit all over mine.

  46. I pictured Cookie descending the plane to a crowd of Ethopian tweens crying melodramtically and saying stuff like, “Noooo! How could you bring David COOK!? He doesn’t even SHAVE!”

Ahahaha! Bless you sunchick. That’s not only the best possible spin to put on that awkward tweet, the visual it conjures up is hilarious. It’s definitely a serious trip, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we got some very moving (read: soggy) footage from it, but the program they’re going to support does sound fantastic. Empowering girls is a good, good thing.

Speaking of which, go, go, go Crystal and Siobhan! The USA Today article about Tim makes me laugh. He is just so… IDK, like he’s totally living in a reality where he is an *awesome* singer and performer. It’s disconcerting. I keep thinking I must have muted and missed something.

Studio57, I heard “Let’s Just Fall in Love Again” in a Hollister. They must like the more obscure idols in that store.

Hollister has been playing Jason’s music for a while now. I heard it in that store before Christmas. I wouldn’t necessarily call Jason an “obscure” idol, though. For a non-winner, he’s doing pretty well for himself and was recently the featured musician on the Bachelor wedding on TV. His song fits in very well with the mood at Hollister!

Today I was shopping at Rack Room Shoes and heard David Cook’s “Light On.” I asked the woman what type of music they played in her store, and she said Muzak. She said they periodically send them a CD to play. I wonder how the artists are compensated for songs chosen by Musak which are intended to be repeatedly played and heard by many. If anyone knows this, please post it!

  48. I would guess that several of the Idols have songs that get played in random stores/offices, etc.. I know I’ve seen on twitter reports from people that have heard Red Guitar in grocery stores and Let It Rain in clothing stores, for instance.

  49. So I think everyone is passing the time this season with AI doomsday scenarios!

Yes. The media as well as the posters here. While many seem to think a final two of Crystal and Siobhan would be great, I don’t agree. There is no fun in just waiting for these two to get to the finish line. Besides, with this season being so disappointing, I would at least like to see the plans of TPTB ruined.

  50. Since I’m bored but not sleepy, I decided to check the add board to see if Kris, Adam, Allison, Danny or Kelly got any early adds this weekend (or late last week)

Kris has picked up 2 new Hot AC adds in Canada (both added on Thursday)
Danny has picked up 1 new add in Bakersfield (added on Friday)
Kelly has picked up 2 new Hot AC adds, in Reno and San Antonio (added on Friday)

    that’s it so far.

  51. Street pulse was saying Adam would get a 1% increase for Adam last week and he ended with a 10% decrease so I wouldn’t worry about Kris until we get the actual results.

  52. Re: the 40% drop for Kris.

What lorismile said. Streetpulse is a sampling of a very small number of retailers, and the percentage changes week-to-week often don’t track very well between SP and Billboard.

Now, if iTunes, Amazon, SP are all dropping by notable amounts, that might be a leading indicator to expect a decline for the week. But it’s still not reliable for the actual percentage.

It was the “(mostly)” part that made it even funnier than it would have been.
