‘Idolatry’: Who can break up the Siobhan-Crystal party on ‘American Idol’?

The first week of American Idol’s season nine finals is in the books, and conventional wisdom would have us believe it’s already down to a battle between dark and unpredictable Siobhan Magnus and serious, steady Crystal Bowersox. But in the world of Idol, sometimes a fabulous early front-runner is a shock elimination waiting to happen. (Just ask Chris Daughtry!)

Kara trades ‘Idol’ credibility to be like Paula

“American Idol’s” addition of a fourth judge last season felt more like a third wheel, but at least then-newcomer Kara DioGuardi made the most of a potentially rocky ride. Lacey Brown looks back on her time in ‘La-La Land’

For “American Idol” contestants past and present, “going to Hollywood” means moving to Los Angeles for at least a few weeks and familiarizing themselves with the sights, smells and congested streets of our fair city. Of course, what’s culture shock to some is enthralling to others, and in an attempt to tap into some of that emotional newness, we’ve come up with a handy exit questionnaire for each eliminated contestant to fill out.

  1. Oh my God, this crazy revisionist history of last season has reached a new low. I chalked up people remembering the likes of Megan and Lil fondly to faulty memories, but now acting like Kara did a great job and was really liked for it last season?!?!? I am a sometimes supporter of Kara, but it is completely false to act like last season she was great and loved by the audience. I don’t disagree that some of her actions this year make it seem like she is trying to fill the void of Paula, but to act like the vitriol towards her last season didn’t exist is crazy!

    Top 10 ‘American Idol’ Songs
    Posted by Boonsri Dickinson

With each ‘American Idol’ season, without fail, we fall in love with these unknown, small town voices and vote on our favorites…. Over the past eight seasons, here are the Top ‘American Idol’ Songs that have been successful on the airwaves and rated by AOL Radio listeners….

    1) David Archuleta: ‘Crush’

The seventh season runner-up finished strong, receiving 44 percent of the 97 million votes. But it’s not surprising ‘Crush’ was such a hit (and our No.1 ‘American Idol’ song) — Jackson said Archuleta could “sing the phone book” and it would still sound great. Growing up in the ‘American Idol’ generation, he became one of the youngest contestants to participate in the show. To keep better tabs on him, check out his frequent tweets.

    2) Chris Daughtry: ‘Home’

Daughtry penned the song on his sofa before he auditioned for ‘American Idol.’ He wrote: “I don’t regret this life I chose for me / But these places and these faces are getting old / So I’m going home, well I’m going home.” After he was booted off the show, he landed a record deal with RCA Records. To promote the song before its release, the sixth season of ‘American Idol’ played the ‘Home’ before bidding farewell to contestants.

    3) Kelly Clarkson: ‘Breakaway’

Close to Underwood in numbers, Clarkson has sold 10.5 million albums to date. Avril Lavigne co-wrote this song, but handed it off to Clarkson. ‘Breakway’ made the ‘American Idol’ sensation a pop princess, saving her from her first two unsuccessful singles. The song apparently fit Clarkson’s life so “perfectly,” that in the music video, she opted to play herself.

    4) Carrie Underwood: ‘Before He Cheats’

The song is about a girl who wants to take action before her boyfriend cheats again. So what does she do? She vandalizes his car. The song received some criticism — for the double standard violence showcased both in the lyrics and the music video. That aside, country fans and the rest of the world went crazy for it — the single sold more than 2.8 million downloads. And so far, Underwood has collectively sold 11 million albums.

    5) Adam Lambert: ‘Whataya Want From Me’

Following Lambert’s controversial American Music Awards performance for his single ‘For Your Entertainment,’ his scheduled talk show appearances were canceled. Finally, he debuted his next single ‘Whataya Want From Me’ on the CBS’s ‘The Early Show.’ But as part of the deal, he also had to explain his behavior during a live interview on the morning show. Randy Jackson previously said that Lambert has a “bigger personality” than Allen. Hey, we were forewarned.

  3. lol gangreen29 – welcome to the manipulations of the idol ptb, and the media. pretending things never happened, or spinning and slanting the news about the contestants and judges in a way to further their aims is their stock in trade. idol seems to be devolving into full cya, outright denial and rats deserting sinking ship mode… pretty soon they’ll have lied and tried to rewrite history so much they’ll have us believing we dreamt the past 8 seasons up – much like the famous season of dallas, when pamela ewing did the same… those of a certain age will know what i’m referencing, lolol…

  4. Nice mention of David Cook’s ‘Permanent’ in that AOL article.

  5. Oh my God, this crazy revisionist history of last season has reached a new low. I chalked up people remembering the likes of Megan and Lil fondly to faulty memories, but now acting like Kara did a great job and was really liked for it last season?!?!?

Aww. Not a Lil fan, but I always liked / still like Megan even though she’s not the best vocalist. She’s more interesting than most of this year’s crop, to be sure, and she has a kooky kind of charm that works for her. Was kind of ~ok with Kara last year.

  6. For all the Cookie fans….

JJF broke the itunes top 100 at 91. Even though all the RS originals got a bump on itunes, Cookie’s version is outselling ALL of them. Great for Cookie with a 40 year old cover that was not really advertised for sale (no mention on AI of the download at all). Can’t wait to hear his new stuff.

  7. I found that article on the mathematics of American Idol, a fascinating read. It confirms what I’ve long suspected. Since I tend to live in less populated zones, I rarely get busy signals, but I come on the boards and hear about all those who do get them. Adding 2 and 2 together, it was clear that votes in populated areas would therefore count less. It does explain the ultimate results. I’m sure Idol is well aware of this phenom, yet they still continue to do nothing about it. It all could be solved with a limit of 10 votes per phone, something they seem determined not to do. Sigh.

That’s crazy they didn’t mention you could buy JJF. If I hadn’t seen it here I wouldn’t of even known it was for sale. Stupid waste of an opportunity to make some $.

  18. gg- I have found PC tools’ spyware Doctor. You can at least use a free version but I have bought it, even a version with antivirus. I have even helped friends fix computers that have had terrible viruses to fix their computers with it. The only bad thing is that it uses a lot of computering power, so I sometimes temporarily disable it to make things faster.

Unidentified- I find it ridiculous that they don’t seem to promote former idol contestants as much as they promote other artists. Last year when DA was on, they didn’t even show his album. You would think they would want to promote the former contestants more. OTOH, they may not have wanted DC to sell more than their current crop.

  20. Thank you girlygirl for: daily chart updates, funny Kris videos, daily itunes updates, and funny Kris tweets! You are a one-stop source of all-Kris information and I greatly appreciate it (and you!)!!

Thanks tripp_ncwy for the VH-1 countdown info, too. I didn’t bother to vote or watch this week. I totally expected LLWD to drop below #10 spot–go figure. Good for WWFM holding at #3!

  21. Danny’s My Best Days video is at #2 and #6 on this week’s CMT Pure and GAC video countdowns, respectively. Carrie’s two videos were in the top 5 at GAC again, Kellie is a couple of spots below Danny this time. If there is AI bloc voting, appears it is continuing to be effective ;)

This is the first week Danny has appeared on the main CMT channel’s Top 20 video countdown, debuting at #18. That’s good that we’re seeing the big CMT channel covering Danny more, and playing his video. The CMT Top 20 host, Evan Farmer, has been gathering questions for an interview with Danny that will apparently appear on the April 2nd countdown show.

For anyone in the VA area, Danny will be at the Winterblast 2010 concert tomorrow afternoon/evening, with Jake Owen, Easton Corbin, Mallory Hope, Love & Theft, Steel Magnolia and others.

  23. WWFM was #1 on the CHUMFM Top 30 this morning for the 4th week in a row (just for comparison Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance was on 4 weeks in a row, and Ke$ha’s Tik Tok was on for three weeks). CHUMFM is one of, if not the largest radio station in Canada. The dj said when he announced it “it has to be a huge compliment to be told that the new season of American Idol is missing you”

  24. WWFM is still #1 on Canada HAC and has moved up to #5 on Canada top40.

  25. Saga

Canada really does love them some Adam, don’t they? That’s so great to see.

Did LLWD move up on either of these charts at all?

  26. I think LLWD is at 28 on the CHUMFM Top 30. The station has not added it tho.

  27. Canada really does love them some Adam, don’t they?

Of the 248 stations that have added WWFM so far, 40 of them are in Canada.

  28. Sorry girlygirl, the website froze. LLWD is #34 (33) on canada top40 and #32 (31) on Canada HAC.

  29. As for the Canadian radio market, there are still 4 stations among the monitored top40 panel (21 stations) that haven’t added WWFM. The whole HAC panel has added. I am not sure WWFM will keep #1 on HAC after this week though since Lady Antellebum are coming really strong. I think WWFM might have a chance to move up 1-2 spots on top40 before it peaks but we’ll see.

  30. Maybe Kris need to do some Canadian radio promo? The visit to Canada started the whole thing for Adam so maybe that’s needed if they want to go for that market.

  31. “Maybe Kris need to do some Canadian radio promo? The visit to Canada started the whole thing for Adam so maybe that’s needed if they want to go for that market.”

saga-I am sure it certain it wouldn’t hurt for Kris to do a promo tour there. Maybe after LLWD is better known there. I think when Adam went there was already quite a bit of interest in him and FYE single was rather popular if I recall.

  32. Yeah Kris should definitely do some promo in Canada. Judging just from posts on here and on the ontd_ai board, as well as from the reaction Adam and his music has received, there are a lot of people who know all about Idol and are interested in hearing the post-Idol stuff. I know people have wondered why Kris hasn’t done any promo there yet.

  33. saga-I am sure it certain it wouldn’t hurt for Kris to do a promo tour there. Maybe after LLWD is better known there. I think when Adam went there was already quite a bit of interest in him and FYE single was rather popular if I recall.

Well just looking at the top40 and HAC chart there I’d say he has to do it now since he is dropping. He is enough on their radar to have him charting on both formats so that means they are interested. Following Adam doing international promo it’s really evident how much impact such visits have.

“Maybe Kris need to do some Canadian radio promo? The visit to Canada started the whole thing for Adam so maybe that’s needed if they want to go for that market.”

Kris absolutely needs to visit Canada and do some promos. Canadians and Americans are so much alike, especially when it comes to music. Kris has a hit single here that went platinum, I am sure he can find a audience in Canada that will love his music.

  35. LOL Yes there are a lot of people who know about Idol here because we are watching it right along with you and the tour came to Vancouver and Toronto. Adam was extemely well received in Toronto both while appearing on AI, at the tour concert and during the promo tour. I would be prepared to bet it was decided he would do the promo tour here a very long time ago not based on FYE the single. He has been popular here since the start. We are similar here musically, with the exception that we are FAR more accepting.

  36. FYE is #3 on ‘Box Breakers’, the request chart on UK music video channel ‘The Box’, less than 12 hours after its first showing on there last night.

The problem is there has to be some sort of initial indication the effort will be worthwhile and there isn’t any indication of substantial demand for Kris. The visit to Canada didn’t start the whole thing for Adam, it was already there to a sufficient extent.

They already had their fingers burnt in Singapore, an audience that is usually receptive to anything that comes out of AI and that was deemed to be one of two where Kris had a comparable fanbase to Adam. However, even after the venue forewent its over-18s only policy when it found itself struggling to sell thetickets to an adult audience, they still couldn’t sell many to children or families.

They aren’t promoting Adam internationally for the benefit of their health. They are doing so because there is sufficient interest and demand. Sadly there isn’t the same for Kris but that’s just the nature of the beast. It is American Idol after all. Not International Idol or World Idol.

  41. Belle

From what I saw on twitter and from the videos, Kris’s show in Singapore was either sold out or pretty close to sold out. They opened it up to the under 18’s because of the complaints from younger fans who wanted to go to the show but wouldn’t have been allowed to do so if they hadn’t changed the policy — not because they were struggling to sell tickets.

Kris has had multiple hit songs on the radio in Asia (No Boundries, Heartless, LLWD and now BWCU supposedly is doing quite well) and LLWD is in its 9th week in the Top 40 on the Global Chart. So I don’t know why you think there isn’t interest in Kris outside the US — not on the level that there is in Adam — but there is still plenty of interest — the videos of his concerts in Asia clearly prove that.

I remember here on this site, all of the Kris fans talking about his promos and concert in Singapore. That’s the reason why I thought, he should be doing some promos in Canada. If they like him in Singapore, I know he would find a audience who would love him in Canada. It seems really silly not to promote him in Canada.

  44. Maybe Kris need to do some Canadian radio promo? The visit to Canada started the whole thing for Adam so maybe that’s needed if they want to go for that market.

yes yes!!! he definitly has fans in Canada. LLWD is actually #42 on the Hot Canadian top 100. He should come this spring

  45. I am sure that jive will send Kris to promote his music wherever it makes sense. Maybe something is set up that we don’t know about. Or maybe they view him principally as a US artist and if he gets sales abroad that is just icing on the cake but they do not intend to make a big international push. Who knows? I always assume the professional know what they are doing

  46. Yeah, I seem to recall that Kris’s Singapore gig was sold out. I think that the review of his show mentioned that. Oh wells, I remain too lazy to look it up.

I would agree that I think Kris can do well in Canada and some promotion would do him in good stead. However it seems that he’s doing some actual gigs in the US (when weather doesn’t cancel them) so there is the issue of timing. But it’s Canada, not like it’s that far away or hard to get to. And given that it’s no longer winter, Kris won’t even have to break out his snow shoes or worry about staying in those igloos that Canadians live in. ;)

  47. They started playing WWFM on the radio in Sweden this week and the song is already #21 on Swedish itunes. Seems to connect well with the melancholic Swedes… It’s in the top10 in Denmark and Finland… only Norway is a bit reluctant, I think it’s in top30 there.

  48. only Norway is a bit reluctant, I think it’s in top30 there.

hahaha…so sad only in the Top 30

  49. I don’t know if promo in Canada would be cost effective or not for Kris. Before Adam’s promo trip to Canada, his album and two singles (and two videos) were doing very well. Kris’ album, single, and video aren’t burning up the charts or selling very well. It just may not make sense to spend time and money doing promotion there.

  50. Is Allenation still Kris’ largest fanpage? Or is it KA’s official webpage? Or IDF?

I’m by no means a Kris fan.. but I’ll just add a “yet” to that comment. I’ve pretty much stopped trying to predict what songs do well where and why. If “According to You” can chart that high then ANYTHING is possible.

  52. California AI blogger writing about having seen and met Danny and his band the past few days when they were performing in San Jose, San Francisco, Sacremento and other northern California locations. Some excerpts:

Danny Gokey blasted his way through town on the way to ….
    Observations …
    – Literally, he was on the way to Emeryville for yet another appearance…
    – Figuratively, if he keeps doing what he’s going (listening to his management group, connecting with the fan base he has, etc., etc.) … he is on his way to stardom in the world of country music.

    – This was not billed as a concert but more as an appearance. Well, I’ve seen (and paid for) worse concerts. Gokey sang 10 songs, interacted with the audience and genally, well, put on a good show.
    – One of his band members explained it this way: “This is the way it’s done in country music. Hit all the country radio stations you can because these people won’t buy his records if they can’t hear them on the radio. And do you see these 200 or so pepole … they are gonna be Gokey fans for life.” I imagine he is right on the money (again, literally and figuratively.)
    – Kudos to Gokey for staying and signing every single request for an autograph and posing for every photo. By the end of the session he looked like he was tired of smiling.

  53. There is a 2 min clip up on Hulu of David Cook and his band visiting the If I Can Dream House.

My favorite part was the musician in the house asking if David’s cover of Jumping Jack Flash is his new song…hee hee.

ETA: Here is a short video from the musician guy talking about David’s visit – he hopes to jam with the band in the future. I would pay money to see that rehearsal – lol!

  54. Help! Anyone have any really happy news, funny jokes etc??? My alma mater, No #1 ranked Kansas Jayhawks, just crashed and burned in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament and mow I’m depressed. Please help keep me from drowning my sorrows in chocolate (I don’t have any liquor handy, fortunately). Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!! Thank!

  55. I’m the exact opposite girlygirl as I live in Cedar Falls, Ia, home of UNI the team that just beat Kansas and we are dazed but thrilled. I can feel for the jay-hawks tho as this was a game they were supposed to win. It’s tough. but just like on AI things don’t always go the way expected.(ask any Clay, Daughtry or Adam fan). I hope you can get by with just chocolate.

  56. I’m impressed with the Leaderpost article regarding the Mathmatics of American Idol. They managed to make their point without using the example of Season 8.

  57. Jojosie

Hey, congratulations!…Northern Iowa played great and totally deserved to win (picture me mumbling this through mouthful of chocolate)

  58. girlygirl – I feel for you as I also am a KU alum and AVID KU BB fan – sigh…….I have been eating pototo chips as I have no chocolate.

And to keep on topic – I downloaded David Cook’s JJF and LOVE it!

  59. wow at that video of kris and charles or whatever his name is. what idiots. i guess its okay to talk about “gayness” and insulting obama (which he called him the N word in a video before) if your a white christian guy from arkansas. no wonder the guy took it down-he was receiving alot of twitter hate, which he should. i wish kris would stop joking around about gay too, not kool since hes friends with adam. why put this on twitter neways? u know ur going to get backlash from it, its a sensitive topic to some people

o ya heres the yt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyBQlDEVIVw

  60. wow at that video of kris and charles or whatever his name is. what idiots. i guess its okay to talk about “gayness” and insulting obama (which he called him the N word in a video before) if your a white christian guy from arkansas. no wonder the guy took it down-he was receiving alot of twitter hate, which he should. i wish kris would stop joking around about gay too, not kool.

cakeygirl, Kris was not joking around about gay; that was all Charles and you can see in the video that Kris isn’t happy about it

  61. JoJosie, we’re celebrating here at my house today, too. I have family members that graduated from UNI. Yes, sometimes the underdog does something unbelievable. I’m still waiting for Tim U. to “have a moment” on Idol. Maybe this week? LOL!

  62. cakeygirl, Kris was not joking around about gay; that was all Charles and you can see in the video that Kris isn’t happy about it

I guess i missed the part of the video where you can see Kris isn’t happy about it. Is there a part 2?

  63. I guess i missed the part of the video where you can see Kris isn’t happy about it. Is there a part 2?

He had nothing to do with what his friend said. He’s a nice guy as mostly everybody knows. Seems like hardly a week goes by without someone trying to pin something on the poor guy that of course never sticks, because he’s not a bad person.

  64. He had nothing to do with what his friend said. He’s a nice guy as mostly everybody knows. Seems like hardly a week goes by without someone trying to pin something on the poor guy that of course never sticks, because he’s not a bad person.

Aren’t you a reflection of what your friends are? I have to admit since I found Adam I am a lot less tolerant of prejudice especially homophobia. Maybe Kris needs to start standing up and admonishing his friends that are vocally homophobic. He looked a bit uncomfortable but he wasn’t stopping the remarks.

  65. Aren’t you a reflection of what your friends are? I have to admit since I found Adam I am a lot less tolerant of prejudice especially homophobia. Maybe Kris needs to start standing up and admonishing his friends that are vocally homophobic.

i dont even think his friend is homophobic; he appears to me to have this twisted sense of humor that requires the use of shocking material. I think that if he was really homophobic he wouldn’t humor anything about this. Anyway he already apologized for being insensitive.
As ross said Kris is really not a bad person

  66. cakeygirl, Kris was not joking around about gay; that was all Charles and you can see in the video that Kris isn’t happy about it

Well he did kind of laugh at it, but he also did hit the camera.

And Charles is clearly a moron, using the n word? and his “gay hat”? yeah, whatever, loser. But Kris isn’t responsible for all of his friends in everything they say. No one is! The only thing he can do is denounce it if he’s heard about it. Though I will say, I don’t know if staying friends with someone who feels comfortable using the n word and stuff like this, would be something I would feel comfortable with.

But yeah, this is Charles, not Kris. Kris has shown himself to be nothing, but wholly open and respectful to and about gay people. So I don’t think this is an indication of anything other that his friend seems like a loser.

  67. Yeah Charles seems like a douche. I remember him using the N word too. His apology was worse than his joke. It is Kri’s friend but I heard Kris laughing about it. Not cool!

  68. It is Kri’s friend but I heard Kris laughing about it. Not cool!

One can also laugh at how idiotic something is because laugh is also triggered by things that are a steep departure from one’s own reality

  69. One can also laugh at how idiotic something is because laugh is also triggered by things that are a steep departure from one’s own reality

Okay as a point, but for me (for you) that’s not how that laughter seemed to me in that video. Of course it’s impossible for us to know, so there is that.

But we do know that Kris didn’t actually say anything to Charles to let him know what an asshat he was being. So there’s also that.

Though one could choose to interpret his hitting the camera as either part of the entire shenangians, or it could be expressing displeasure.

Lots of things open to interpretation in this.

Though I think it’s pretty clear that Charles is an asshat. And I think given all he’s said and done, that Kris is not. He’s just friends with asshats.

  70. wow at that video of kris and charles or whatever his name is. what idiots. i guess its okay to talk about “gayness” and insulting obama (which he called him the N word in a video before) if your a white christian guy from arkansas.

Wait is this true? This guy who is Kris’s best friend used the N word towards Obama? If so, Kris Allen, you are dead to me. Who you choose to associate yourself with is a reflection of your own self.

  71. Who you choose to associate yourself with is a reflection of your own self.

ITA. This Charles is not just some acquaintance. He is Kris’ long time best friend.

You can’t control your friends, but you can control who you are friends with.

  72. Wait is this true? This guy who is Kris’s best friend used the N word towards Obama?

Yeah! This Charles guy is a bigot from the word go! I am personally not close friends with bigots. We just don’t get along.

  73. Yeah! This Charles guy is a bigot from the word go! I am personally not close friends with bigots. We just don’t get along.

When did this happen? I can’t believe this isn’t a bigger thing. I have been very critical of things idols like Blake and Adam have said but this pales in comparison. I don’t care if Kris didn’t say it, his good friend was blatantly racist and posted a video about it? And he is still good friends with him? And his good friend is now going around being blatantly homophobic right in front of Kris (which I saw this video and he was)? I just deleted every Kris Allen song I own, I am so disgusted right now.

  74. Gangreen29

    Are you being sarcastic??

No! Im really upset right now. I know some people will say “oh kris didn’t say it” but the thought of an artist i previously supported being so close to someone so hateful is really upsetting.

  75. wow at that video of kris and charles or whatever his name is. what idiots. i guess its okay to talk about “gayness” and insulting obama (which he called him the N word in a video before) if your a white christian guy from arkansas.

Guess you don’t see your own prejudices when you make assumptions about “white Christian guys from Arkansas.” Who do you object to, white guys, Christians, or Arkansans?

Did you see the pics of Kris in Haiti? Does he look like somebody who’s prejudiced? He’s been a missionary in Africa and Asia. One of the guys in his wedding party, one of his best friends from home, is African American (probably he’s one of Charles’s best friends, too). One of Kris’s band (guys he chose himself) is Hispanic. One of his best friends from Idol (Adam) is gay, though some people persist in some kind of irrational belief that Kris has some hidden anti-gay agenda.

Honestly. Can you try to be a little fair and not let your imaginations run wild?

  76. You can’t control your friends, but you can control who you are friends with.

I agree! The guy felt too comfortable making a video and saying what he said with Kris right there. If he knew Kris had a problem with it, I don’t see him doing it right in front of Kris. Really telling. Yeah, he knocked the camera away but we are not sure why like it was mentioned earlier.

  77. I remember when the “Swastika ” issue came up with Adam. He was a jew but it was discussed for pages and pages without giving him the benefit of the doubt. This is a similar situation. I objected but MJ said it was open for discussion.

  78. Thought I would drop in to see if there was anything new, I see that there isn’t. The same people are trying to stir up shit regarding Kris.

  79. I agree! The guy felt too comfortable making a video and saying what he said with Kris right there. If he knew Kris had a problem with it, I don’t see him doing it right in front of Kris. Really telling.

I agree. My close friends wouldn’t use the N word or tell “gay jokes”. They find those types of comments to be under the category of hate speech. They don’t think those types of comments are funny or acceptable and neither do I.

  80. gangreen29

I understand you being upset, because at the very least Charles is an idiot who doesn’t understand that he can’t go around using the N word or calling things “gay” — even in a joking manner. At worst, he’s a racist and a homophobe. My feeling is that he’s more the former than the latter, but who knows.

But Kris is clearly neither of these things and really shouldn’t be held responsible for his friend’s actions. Kris voted for Obama — which he wouldn’t do if he was a racist, now would he? And he’s clearly not homophobic. Why punish him for having an idiot friend?
Especially since we have no idea what Kris has or hasn’t said to Charles about all of this. It’s clear that Kris is NOT happy in this video — he hits the camera and he even says “I’m outta here” at the tail end of the video. But he clearly wasn’t going to call Charles out on video — and even if he had, Charles wouldn’t have posted that.

Adam’s friends have posted inappropriate things on twitter as well. No one should blame Adam for what his friends do or say, and no one should blame Kris for what his friends do or say. These people are adults, and Adam and Kris aren’t their parents — they don’t have any way to control their thoughts or actions.

Hopefully Kris will think about distancing himself a little bit from Charles. But it can’t be easy to disassociate himself from people who are longtime friends who supported him when he was struggling to make a living, just because he’s a public figure now.

  81. Too many of you are far too quick to judge Kris when you have no idea what happened. I’m sorry — all you are perfect and have perfect friends who never say or do anything stupid or inappropriate? That’s amazing — how is that possible?

Don’t get me wrong — I’m not defending Charles. He’s an idiot and he deserves all the backlash. Kris has already shown many times that he isn’t homophobic — yet some people here seem to think that that’s not enough. What exactly did you want him to do?

  82. Also, who says that Charles is Kris’s best friend? I’ve never seen or heard Kris refer to him that way. Kris has a lot of friends — and refers to Katy — not Charles — as his best friend.

  83. Hopefully Kris will think about distancing himself a little bit from Charles.

I second that, but most importantly “Twitter is the devil” . Was that what Kris said before ?. Anybody connected to Kris, please, THINK before you do anything. Kris is busting his butt trying to make it.

Just remember, next week he is going for about a week to help drop off 35,000 pairs of shoes for the children at Rwanda.

  84. But we do know that Kris didn’t actually say anything to Charles to let him know what an asshat he was being. So there’s also that.

How do we know this? The video was like 20 seconds long. How do we know what Kris said or didn’t say after recording stopped?

  85. I have to admit since I found Adam I am a lot less tolerant of prejudice especially homophobia.

I’ve seen quite a few comments from Adam fans similar to this. I can’t help but think these people had tolerated hate to some degree before January 2009 or that they simply didn’t care about injustice or inequality because it didn’t concern them.

Kris has already shown many times that he isn’t homophobic — yet some people here seem to think that that’s not enough. What exactly did you want him to do?

Kris should’ve bitch slapped Charles while the cameras were rolling. That would’ve been a start. [/sarcasm].

  86. “Why the gay hat?”

    LOL

    :)

I guess a lot of people are old folks and don’t watch South Park. But then again it depends on the fanbase. Younger fans know the difference…lol

  87. But we do know that Kris didn’t actually say anything to Charles to let him know what an asshat he was being. So there’s also that.

How do we know this? The video was like 20 seconds long. How do we know what Kris said or didn’t say after recording stopped?

How do you know he did? The point was about the video, where Charles said something stupid, and on the video, Kris said nothing to Charles about that. As I said, the rest is open to interpertation, but what we do know is on camera, Kris said nothing. It’s speculation and we have zero proof about Kris saying anything to Charles afterwards.

I maintain that Kris isn’t homophobic at all personally, he’s just a friend of someone who is an ass.

  88. Hopefully Kris will think about distancing himself a little bit from Charles. But it can’t be easy to disassociate himself from people who are longtime friends who supported him when he was struggling to make a living, just because he’s a public figure now.

I would COMPLETELY distance myself from this idiot when I heard him using hate speech. And I would drop his ass in a New York minute once I found out he posted this video.
Once again- You can’t control your friends, but you can control who you are friends with!

  89. I would COMPLETELY distance myself from this idiot when I heard him using hate speech. And I would drop his ass in a New York minute once I found out he posted this video.
Once again- You can’t control your friends, but you can control who you are friends with!

Why should he? Because an Adam fan says so?

    LOL

So should people distance themselves from South Park?

    People’s age is showing.

I am Gay, and we use that term all the time. I know a lot of OLD folks don’t use it, but that is because they are behind in the times.

  90. I don’t like what Charles said, but I don’t hold Kris responsible for it. Like ross said, Kris’s own behavior has been open-minded and accepting. We have no idea if Kris has tried to change Charles’s views, but even if he’s tried, it’s really hard to change someone. It takes time. I know it won’t happen fast enough for a lot of people, but Charles himself has to make the choice to change. Kris can’t be faulted for his friend not making that choice yet. As for why Kris is still friends with Charles–they’ve been friends a long time, and a good friend doesn’t just give up on someone when they do something stupid. Again, I agree that what Charles said was wrong, but I don’t agree that Kris should be raked over the coals for it.

  91. Why should he? Because an Adam fan says so?

    LOL

So should people distance themselves from South Park

If South Park uses “gay jokes” and the N word, then people who do not tolerate hate speech would not support the show.
Intolerance of homophobic behavior and racial slurs is not unique to just “Adam fans”.

  92. If South Park uses “gay jokes” and the N word, then people who do not tolerate hate speech would not support the show.

LOL…then you are showing YOUR AGE… BECAUSE SOUTH PARKS USES THE WORD “GAY” ON THEIR SHOW ALLLL the time…lol

And South Park is one of the top shows on Comedy Central and is very cool and is part of youth culture.

Sorry if some OLD people aren’t into today’s language.

  93. It’s speculation and we have zero proof about Kris saying anything to Charles afterwards.

Exactly my point, Truthiness. It doesn’t make sense to say,

But we do know that Kris didn’t actually say anything to Charles to let him know what an asshat he was being. So there’s also that.

We have no idea what was or wasn’t said.

  94. What I don’t understand is that people make the argument that Kris is so insignificant, boring, and inarticulate that no one cares about what he has to say, but now all of a sudden it’s important for him to ‘speak out’ against ‘homophobia’ because a non-famous friend used a slang term that few obsessed fans may associate with Adam Lambert. I thought no one paid attention to Kris?

If he did lecture Charles about how using the word “gay” in a negative way is hurtful, then people would be dwelling on how he mumbles too much when he speaks or they’d give Lambert the credit for teaching Kris a lesson in tolerance.

  95. If South Park uses “gay jokes” and the N word, then people who do not tolerate hate speech would not support the show.
Intolerance of homophobic behavior and racial slurs is not unique to just “Adam fans”.

ummm south park uses a shitload of racist and gay jokes. btw I hate homophobia and racism and I love south park.

  96. In today’s langauge “gay” also has another meaning…it also means LAME.

    Even we Gays use it.

  97. This is not about American Idol Winner/non winner or fans/non fans. It is about humanity. Even if South Park says it every day, I don’t watch it, don’t approve of it, and let my friends know they can’t feel comfortable saying those things around me. They know they can’t even say “Those shoes are gay” around me. Kris should just call his friend out on it or distance himself if he really feels the way he says he does. It is not just “Adam” fans that stand up against racism and homophobia.

  98. LOL…then you are showing YOUR AGE… BECAUSE SOUTH PARKS USES THE WORD “GAY” ON THEIR SHOW ALLLL the time…lol

This has nothing to do with age. It has to do with what people tolerate or not in their lives.
When did “South Park” become the barometer for everything we should accept in society? Who cares what types of jokes South Park uses? It doesn’t make it right just because some tv show uses it.
I do not find the use of homophobic jokes/slurs or the use of the n word to be funny or acceptable in any way.

  99. They are the same who defended Adam saying that it was OK to do drugs and not to listen to their parents…so take it with a grain of salt…because you know what is going on…lol

Wait what. Adam said this. I’m deleting all the 30 FYE MP3 albums I bought from Amazon when it went for a buck. I’m really upset. It doesn’t matter if he’s misquoted or not.

  100. Are YOU gay tiger? Wellll?

I am gay and I know the reference is part of youth culture and is a term meaning LAME.

  101. Wait what. Adam said this. I’m deleting all the 30 FYE MP3 albums I bought from Amazon when it went for a buck. I’m really upset. It doesn’t matter if he’s misquoted or not.

You can do what ever you want…lol

  102. OH THE HUMANITY! I’m sorry but come on….

LOL…that is why I love South Park.

It makes uptight people MORE UPTIGHT…LOL

  103. Well then…I am, and I didn’t see anything wrong with it. I understand old people don’t know the terms these days, but maybe people should learn them…lol

One person cannot speak for all gay people. Do all gay people think it is funny when the word “gay” is used to mean “lame”. Do all gay people find the term “You’re so gay” to be acceptable?
If some black people think the use of the n word is funny, does that mean it should be acceptable to everyone?
This has nothing to do with age. It has to do with what people tolerate or not in their lives. People of every age, race and sexual orientation find the use of homophobic jokes or the use of racial slurs to be unacceptable.

  104. Kris mentioned about Cougar Scouts and some Glamberts thought it’s a diss to them. Didn’t you get the memo, Kris? The world revolves around St. ADAM. Anything you say (or in the gay hat gate – you didn’t say) will be used against you. This applies to you too Danny and Sarver.

  105. Kris mentioned about Cougar Scouts and some Glamberts thought it’s a diss to them. Didn’t you get the memo, Kris? The world revolves around St. ADAM. Anything you say (or in the gay hat gate – you didn’t say) will be used against you.

exactly. I demand Kris head on a stick for daring to not to cut of his friend completely within 20 seconds for saying a extremely popular slang word that even gay people say. OH THE HUMANITY!

Hey btw, did you hear that some people didn’t like the fact that Adam advised people to do drugs to find themselves? Thats terrible, how dare they try to not let BB be his unfiltered self! being PC is so boring .

  106. The world revolves around St. ADAM. Anything you say (or in the gay hat gate – you didn’t say) will be used against you. This applies to you too Danny and Sarver.

You’re forgetting David Cook. Last summer people on this site were freaking out because David mentioned something about how you won’t be seeing a bunch of glitter at his shows because, well, you won’t be seeing a bunch of glitter at his shows. If only he had chosen his words more carefully, the inventor of glitter, Adam Lambert, would not be so deeply offended.

  107. I demand Kris head on a stick for daring not to cut of his friend completely within 20 seconds for saying a extremely popular slang word that even gay people say. OH THE HUMANITY!

Ah, irony. Hard to believe these issues were only a few days apart. It seems we have the memory of fruit flies around here. ;)

  108. I am loving Jason’s song.

Every time that overstock.com commericial comes on I get a big kick out of hearing Jason’s song.

    YAY FOR JASON!!!

Hopefully Kris will think about distancing himself a little bit from Charles. But it can’t be easy to disassociate himself from people who are longtime friends who supported him when he was struggling to make a living, just because he’s a public figure now.

Just catching up on the thread here.. This is just about the most insightful post written after midnight. LOL

I completely agree with this. My only other input is that I feel much stronger about Kris needing to distance himself from friends like this. I can’t imagine being thrown into the post idol whirlpool, it can’t be fun and having a few close friends around would be essential. However, I’m thinking at this point between Kris’s world travels & his rise to the spotlight, he’s probably out grown some of his friends. What I find disturbing about this is not so much what he said, but that Charles posted it anyway. It wasn’t an impulsive twitter. He had to download it, upload it & post it. From the stand point of a friend it was a thougthtless thing to do. Sadly, I suspect Kris has got a growth moment coming up soon.

LOL South Park has been around for over 10 years. As an now ‘old’ person.. who was young when this show came out.. it was still distasteful – to me – even back then. Watching the show was always like second hand embarrassment to me, but then even as a young child I never got “bathroom” humor.

And as far as today’s language and gay=lame, yes even back in the olden days gay=lame. The difference is that with a little maturity and world experience one learns the power of language and its usages. Which is why so many women with and without graduate degrees would now fight to the ends of this earth not to be called ‘girls’ in the workplace.

  111. As my gay friend would say, Oh Mary.
Shouldn’t Adam distance himself from Boy George? Boy George was arrested for imprisoning a gay hustler he picked up.
Just to keep it real. Let’s see un PC comment vs. sadistic abuse of a gay person. No brainer really. Maybe Adam needs his own growth moment.

Why is Adam being brought into a discussion about Kris and his friend?

Well I never understood why anyone would associate with M. Jackson either.

  112. I’m sure many of Adam’s fans have tweeted the dude in question to advise him of his inappropriate language. But I bet not one of them has tweeted that Boy George is one scary dude. He invited a hustler to his home to photograph and then chained him to the wall. The guy was terrified and feared for his life. If a male artist did that to a woman, he’d be ostracized (after a long prison term, hopefully.)

If Kris is being condemned for the language of a friend, I think Adam can be criticized for attending the party of a someone who has assaulted a gay man. You are judged by the company you keep.

  113. jpfan – there is a separate thread about BG, you might want to post over there. Unless Adam is associating more with BG than just going to a promo party, I’m putting much thought into this. *shrug*

ETA: I didn’t judge Kris. Re-read my post. I just said that Kris may have outgrown his friend, which is sad. Or maybe you are just responding to my Q?

  114. I am not going to make any judgment call on Boy George…I do understand that he has “paid his debt” to society (spent time in Prison and “cleaned” streets as part of his rehabilitation program) and I would hope that people would accept him for his present day demeanor and not the Problems he has had in the past. Hell, if we were so narrow minded as to judge people by their pasts we would have very few “stars” left in Hollywood, and the music industry wouldn’t have any “old-timers” left to be iconic (those that are still alive and didn’t meet untimely deaths).

The only problem with Kris’ friend is that he chose to make the entire video “public” for some obtuse reason….guess that some peeps will just use a famous friends coattails to get their 15 minutes of fame…and damn it all if they leave their “friends” open to any kind of ridicule.

  115. I don’t blame Kris at all. But Charles must not be that great of a friend to Kris. He had to know that posting something like that on twitter was going to make wars again between fan bases but he posted that anyways. Doesn’t sound like someone that I would want as a friend. And even if Charles was joking it’s not funny.

  116. Tess I totally agree with you, that’s what I was trying to say with my post above. And I don’t believe that Kris is racist at all. And it’s sad when a (friend) causes problems for his other (friend).

  117. I remember when Adam’s brother, Neil, wrote this disproving of Obama getting the Nobel Peace Prize;

That at least puts me on par with Barack Obama. Also, sometimes I complain about things other people are thinking and save them the trouble of having to voice their frustration. That?s peace.

So there you have it, one of the 3 of us will win the 2010 Peace Prize. All I?ve got to do is go to Norway in blackface and appeal to the Norwegian Committee about how hard it is to be an angry Black Jew who still manages to keep his cool in the endless procession of days that is life.

*ahem* Neil Lambert complained that all he had to do was go in “blackface” and he would get a Nobel Peace Prize like Barack Obama?

    I believe that is racist.

  118. I’m not sure why some people think that Kris needs to change his friends. Those friends have been a part of his life a lot longer than the non-fans that(stalk) follow him and his friends on twitter. Apparently he doesn’t seem to give a damn about what other people think about how he chooses to spend his time and with whom. That says a lot about character and self awareness…and he really seems to be able to be non-judgmental, something that will benefit him in the long run.

  119. Kris’s friend is a jerk. Everybody makes dumb comments from time to time. Kris has made a couple stupid uses of the term gay as a joke in the past like in his Ryan Seacrest gig with Adam. It is no big deal and obviously Adam is still friends with him.

  120. LOL South Park has been around for over 10 years. As an now ‘old’ person.. who was young when this show came out..

Yes, Matt Stone and Trey Park, the creators, are about 40 now. I personally like South Park and even own the unrated version of the South Park movie. But what works on a cartoon doesn’t necessarily work in real life. South Park does a good job of lampooning everyone, so really, they are not picking on one group.

Kris and Adam can’t be held responsible for what their friends and family members say. All they can do it try to educate them and help them be more open minded. It sounds like Kris grew up with this guy and he may feel like family. I would rather Kris and Adam try to enlighten their friends and family then to break off all ties with them.

Also, piping in to defend old Arkansas. We can’t forget that Bill Clinton is from Arkansas and a Christian, and he, my no means, is a racist, a bigot or a homophobe.

  121. Kris and Adam can’t be held responsible for what their friends and family members say. All they can do it try to educate them and help them be more open minded. Fully agree with your comment. Big thumb up!

  122. Oh. Dear. God.

I don’t feel like going through this thread to delete, so instead, I’m closing this thread permanently.

Don’t even think of continuing this current fanwar anywhere else.
