Kelly Clarkson live in SA: My thoughts

The original American Idol, Kelly Clarkson kicked off her ‘All I Ever Wanted’ tour to South Africa in Johannesburg last week Friday. Now I’ve been a fan of this Grammy winner since she won the title back in 2002. I think she has an incredible voice and as Randy Jackson on Idol says, her ‘Chops’ are amazing. So I expected a lot, and what I lot I got. She was fantastic on stage. Her energy is crazy, her voice as a performer sounds just as good as it does as a recording artist. She belted out the ballads like ‘Because Of You’ and jumped around on anthems like ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’. The one thing I absolutely loved about the concert was the audience participation. When she turned the mic to the 13 000 or so crowd, the amount of singing (in tune) was crazy. I loved it and I get goose bumps at the thought of this.

David Archuleta reflects on ‘Imagine’

I’ve always thought David Archuleta’s Imagine was one of the riskiest choices a contestant has made on American Idol.

There were so many ways that February 2008 performance could have backfired on David. Simon Cowell acknowledged as much afterward, telling David it was “very, very risky to do a John Lennon song — particularly that one.”

Portia de Rossi Is Glad She’s Not an Idol Judge

It wasn’t a love for butchered cover songs that led Ellen DeGeneres to the American Idol judges’ panel — it was the result of a simple marital directive.

  1. Saw the idolatry vid last night – not too much of note in it, though lol-tastic as usual (however, Slezak was a bit more somber and angry in this one because of the eliminations last week).

But he did point out the potential problem with the early Crystal pimping by Simon and co.

  2. Slezak was a bit of a snooze for me this week. I get the comparison between Elliott (sp?) and Alex, but that is the risk you take when you cast a whole bunch of contestants without a lot of stage experience. I like the ‘rise from no where’ story just like everyone else. That is a story we see everywhere from movies to books, now American Idol. Its getting cliche.

I think Crystal is going to have some pimping backlash in a few weeks. Its inevitable. Sad.

  3. I like the ‘rise from no where’ story just like everyone else. That is a story we see everywhere from movies to books, now American Idol. Its getting cliche.

I agree – I’m wondering if the fact that Kris last season, and Cook to a bit of a lesser extent in Season 7, has kind of played this story out because Kris’s achievement brought things back full-circle to what happened with Kelly.

  4. That WNTS article was great! I think they are pretty spot on in terms of their analysis of what happened with last week’s elims. I remember reading their analysis last year about how Kris won, and I really agreed with their take then too.

The part of me that likes to make sense of chaos, and tends to over-think things myself, really appreciates their write-ups!

I agree. Even from casual viewers, I keep hearing that they don’t like this season, except for Crystal. But too much pimping this early on could hurt her. Last year we had both Danny and Adam as front runners, so having JUST Crystal this early in the game could be bad. JMO.

It will be interesting to see how she mixes things up now that we have theme weeks. For how good she is, I feel she also tended to play it pretty safe, and close to her comfort zone, throughout semi-finals. However, I think she has enough experience and musicality to make most theme weeks match her pretty nicely.

  6. Jason Castro covers ‘Crazy’ for Billboard’s ‘Mashup Mondays’
    http://www.billboard.com/column/mashupmondays/jason-castro-goes-crazy-with-gnarls-barkley-1004075145.story

Jason Castro is known for bringing down the house with his acoustic version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” on ‘American Idol’ season 7 and, more recently, what Billboard called the “sprightly folk pop” of his late ’09 single “Let’s Just Fall In Love.” But this ever-smiling Texan in dreads leaves aside his whimsical sound to put a passionate, stripped-down spin on the hip-hop soul of Gnarls Barkley’s hit, “Crazy.”

  7. Have we really had any rise from no where contestants cause IMO Kris wasn’t it really, he had alot of experience compared to alot of the idols, maybe Fantasia or Jordin or Kelly were rise from no where. I think most of the older contestants already have some performing experience at bars and clubs like Cook and Allen, that helps them alot in the competition with song arranging. A rise from no where this season would have been if Alex or Haeley or Aaron won Season 9, but only Aaron is left.

  8. Kate8 -There was no mention of Kris. The example was Alex and Elliott. There was discussion about ‘growth’ & it seems to me that TPTB are looking for the ‘growth story’. There is no other way that I can explain there being so many inexperienced performers this year. Zzzzzzzzzzzz

Kris was a rise from nowhere in regards to his edit on the show, in that we never saw him with the exception of White Chocolate, not in regards to his previous experience.

And Aaron is not a rise from nowhere, there is video of him performing out on YouTube from what I recall.

  10. The biggest issue I see with so many inexperienced performers this year is that it is painfully obvious after the last two seasons. And it doesn’t make for great tv (for me anyway) It’s like America’s Got Talent now. Very amateur. After Cook, Adam, Kris, Archie.. tough acts to follow.

Crystal seems to be well seasoned, unfortunately it’s just not a style I’m fond of. I’m intrigued by Siohban as well.

  11. anovich – thats a good point. Many of us in the idol bubble know previous experience via YT, etc. but the edits are completely different. I didn’t find this blog until the season was almost over. I still don’t know what Kris’s prior experience is (not that it even matters at this point). My IMPRESSION (right or wrong) was that he tried bar gigs and such after HS and before college. More than that I have no idea. As far as that goes, I’m not sure if I got this impression from idol or post-season info.

As a chuckle. I alway thought of AI S8 as a rewritten version of Star Wars with familiar archetypes. Kris – Luke, Adam – Han Solo, Gokey – Darth Vader, Allison – Princess Leia …. Maybe Simon was Obiwan. Now what is the Death Star? :) AI, bent on our very destruction or control?

It absolutely plays into American Mythology. Now THATS what I call being scripted. LOL

You just said everything I was thinking too. Including Crystal – she’s very good, very polished and confident, but still just not my cuppa, music-wise.

  13. koshka, if you read the editorials on What Not To Sing it gives a good idea about how off the radar Kris was (both the editorial from last season called Allen’s Wrench about how he “broke” AI as well as the one explaining Alex Lambert’s Lilly Scott’s eliminations.) They even bring up how last year at this time, Kris was so far off everyone’s radars as a contender for the season, considering they list the 7 people they thought were contenders. This fact does give me hope that one of the kids this year can come out and shock us, and I do think there are one or two that have huge potential to do it.

  14. I don’t know if Kris had a lot more experience pre-Idol than most of these S9 contestants. He played some gigs in Arkansas, but from what he has said, it doesn’t sound like they were all that frequent. And of course he put out his own album. How many of th S9 contestants had never performed in public at some sort of gig prior to getting on Idol? I would bet all of them have performed in public somewhere. Even Alex Lambert said he had sung in public before, although only in front of small crowds. And a lot of them had videos up on YouTube and/or their own My Space/Facebook/personal websites.

I don’t know if anyone really comes out of nowhere. Did Kelly never sing in public prior to being on Idol? Or Fantasia? Or Ruben? Or Jordin? Or Carrie? I don’t remember their back stories that clearly, but I would suspect that all of them had some sort of public singing experience, even it was in school or in church. And probabaly at least some of them had actual gigs prior to being on the show. And at least of some of them had had professional vocal training.

So it’s all pretty subjective about what “out of nowhere” really means these days. Kris won despite getting virtually no airtime prior to making the Top 36. Of the Top 12 this season, is there anyone who didn’t get a lot of airtime prior to making the Top 24? Maybe Paige?

  15. I like the ‘rise from no where’ story just like everyone else. That is a story we see everywhere from movies to books, now American Idol. Its getting cliche.

That’s what AI is. I don’t get what you’re saying. To me, all performers on AI rise from nowhere. I don’t think it’s a question of experience, it’s a question of fame.

AI is about taking some unknown person and making them a star. I know I never heard of Kris or Cook or Adam or any of them until they were on AI. It doesn’t matter if they worked in the business, were known by local audiences, known by a five hundred or a thousand people, whatever. They’re still unknowns to us, they’re not stars. AI makes them nationally and internationally known. That, to me, is going from nowhere to somewhere.

  16. So it’s all pretty subjective about what “out of nowhere” really means these days. Kris won despite getting virtually no airtime prior to making the Top 36. Of the Top 12 this season, is there anyone who didn’t get a lot of airtime prior to making the Top 24? Maybe Paige?

According to the good folks at What Not To Sing, the following is the prior to semis exposure for the Top 12:

Promos: Didi Benami, Andrew Garcia, Casey James, Aaron Kelly, Michael Lynche, Katie Stevens

Auditions: Crystal Bowersox, Lacey Brown, Lee Dewyze

Minimal/Some Hollywood: Siobhan Magnus, Paige Miles, Tim Urban

  17. So it’s all pretty subjective about what “out of nowhere” really means these days.

Well there is our individual truths.. and then there is TPTB’s truth. LOL

  18. They even bring up how last year at this time, Kris was so far off everyone’s radars as a contender for the season, considering they list the 7 people they thought were contenders. This fact does give me hope that one of the kids this year can come out and shock us, and I do think there are one or two that have huge potential to do it.

Unfortunately .. I am so not a fan of Kris’s – though I have not written him off in terms of my liking his other work. So sadly this does not give me hope.

  19. Well there is our individual truths.. and then there is TPTB’s truth. LOL

And that is the truth! lol

  20. I feel a major problem with pulling out a contestant from total obscurity and then thrusting them into the lime light when they win can have some major problems and drawbacks. It’s fine for the AI fandom to “allow” an Idol winner to grow once they are in the real world…but it isn’t quite so fine with potential fans who want a “seasoned” entertainer to spend their hard-earned dollars on.

I feel the idols with the most experience and who displayed their wares in public prior to AI are the ones who have fared the best in the real world. An the idols with good longevity seem to be those who got their basic training out of the way prior to Idol.

I for one, have no interest in paying to see an Idol “learn the ropes” on my dime. If I’m going to a concert I want to be fully entertained and don’t want to watch someone with anxiety or discomfort written all over their faces. So for me I totally hate the “sing in the shower” contestant. It’s fine for a reality show…not so fine for the big bad world after the show is over.

  21. So it’s all pretty subjective about what “out of nowhere” really means these days. Kris won despite getting virtually no airtime prior to making the Top 36. Of the Top 12 this season, is there anyone who didn’t get a lot of airtime prior to making the Top 24? Maybe Paige?

I don’t think Tim got tons of airtime before the Top 24, although we did see him in the group rounds. You are correct that Paige didn’t. I hope neither of these two ends up winning (rising out of “nowhere”). If so, I won’t bother buying tickets for the tour.

  22. Congratulations to Kris for rising to the top of the IDOL airplay chart with LLWD!!!! Hope it’s the first of many!

  24. I see where you are going with this Tess. I know there were a lot of Alex fans, but when I looked at him, this is what I was thinking in a nutshell. Watching his anxiety (or Katie’s or Aaron’s) is uncomfortable for me. The second half of this is not only ‘learning the ropes’ but is also about finding their niche. Makes me think of Taylor & Clay specifically. Sure they sold well out the gate, but there wasn’t a specific place for them to continue doing well. I also often feel like they ‘created’ Jordin. I think she is now in a good place, but the start was pretty rocky.

But for Adam…the sales he is generating outside the US is a nice trade-off.

Looks like a rough week for sales for both Adam and Kris

HDD shows only about 28% of their forecasted sales for the new releases right now — that is % of locations not % of sales that they show — and it has been off for the past couple of weeks.

Actually, FYE will have a fine week — prob will come in around 10K. And WWFM will sell >50K so doesn’t sound like a rough week to me.

    WWFM daily ranks last week:

    iTunes US 23/95 pop 24/101 pop 22/134 pop 20/200 pop 20 21 22
    Amazon US MP3 23 24 21 19 17 18 24

WWFM is up to #18 on iTunes US and close to it’s peak of #17 [which it hit 3 times 1/20 post-Oprah, 2/20 and last Thursday. So looks like next week will be good too.

  35. I for one, have no interest in paying to see an Idol “learn the ropes” on my dime. The fact is that people at various levels of experience audition for AI, and if they’re good, they’re put through to Top 24, Top 36, whatever. After that, you can vote for them or not, as you choose. But AI isn’t all about just giving opportunities to experienced priofessionals. If you look at last year’s Top 10, for instance, several of them had no professional experience.

  39. I read somewhere that Adam’s, Kris’s and Allison’s albums were all being released in Japan on the same day (March 10). Anyone know if this turned out to be the case. And, if so, anyone know where we would be able to track all three of their sales in Japan?

    Thanks

As a chuckle. I alway thought of AI S8 as a rewritten version of Star Wars with familiar archetypes. Kris – Luke, Adam – Han Solo, Gokey – Darth Vader, Allison – Princess Leia …. Maybe Simon was Obiwan. Now what is the Death Star? AI, bent on our very destruction or control?

I’m dying laughing right now…..Thank you for this….This just made my freakin’ day!!!
Yay for Kris leading Idol airplay!!! :)
and just WOW to Kara’s abs on the cover of Women’s Health – at 39yrs old none the less….. You go girl…..

  41. Thanks Lorismile! I hope if they chart, they will have the album/single covers on that site — because I can’t read Japanese, so wouldn’t have a clue who’s on the list!

You can use the side bars for the singles charts. I use google translator to change it to English. Here’s the link:

  43. For what it is worth, Street Pulse is projecting a 52% drop in album sales for Danny, a 20% drop for Adam and a 15% drop for Kris

Daughtry Leave This Town SBME/ RCA +6.2
Carrie Underwood Play On SBME/ Sbmg Nashville -6.0
Kris Allen Kris Allen Sbmg/ Jive -15.4
Adam Lambert FYE SBME/ RCA -20.1
Danny Gokey My Best Days SBME/ Sbmg Nashville -52.1

  44. 52% drop means they think Danny will sell close to 30,000 albums this week which isn’t too bad. I think it is quite normal to drop by 50% after the first week. Does anyone remember how much of a drop Kris, Adam, and Allison had after their first week sales? Would really like to know.

  45. According to a Rolling Stone article I found, Adam had a 74% decline after his first week:

Three of last week’s Top Five albums all dropped out of the Top 10, with Adam Lambert’s For Your Entertainment freefalling from Three to 19 thanks to a 74 percent sales decline.

I’m still looking for Kris sales decline but I think it was something like 64% if I recall correctly.

  46. holy crap! so adam’s album is platinum in canada and gold in the US and Singapore??? amazeballs!

  47. Nigel Lythgoe Promises “Shocking Changes” to So You Think You Can Dance”

    Shocking changes? Like what?

Nigel no longer lambaste a contestant until they are curled up in a corner in the fetal position. (How much money do you suppose Nathan has spent on therapy since the show?)

Nigel will no longer harshly reprimand the audience for disagreeing with him.

They will invite Kara Dioguardi to guest judge just so Adam Shankman doesn’t look like such a cry baby.

The judges will stop gushing over Travis Wall choreography. Yeah, it’s good, but enough already.

No more dances about aliens or with costumes that cover the dancers face.

Seriously. I wonder what “shocking changes” they are planning?

  48. Ouch that are quite big drops for Adam and Kris. What’s happening??? Their albums seem to be fading away…

  49. I didn’t think Adam would sell 10K this week. I think both their albums will pick up with more hit singles, providing they have them. Plus they have their Idol appearances, and I’m sure when Adam’s Japan Import release is available, his sales will get a little bump that week.

  50. Someone posted on Pulse that Asia’h Epperson from Season 7 (Cut at Top 16) got signed to Babyface and is putting out an album. I hope good things for her!

Here is a twitter about it from someone she worked with (JD):
@asiahe is babyface new artist she was on idol season 7 hit her page and check her out, back to this song i cant stop listening

  51. Good news to hear Canada certified Adam’s album as platinum, since in usa, ‘they’ are pushing Kris down our throats and trying to hold Adam back for awhile till Kris does better. It has become tiresome. Even Jason Castro finished fifth and he sounds like Kris Allen- makes no sense at all.

  52. since in usa, ‘they’ are pushing Kris down our throats and trying to hold Adam back for awhile till Kris does better.

Heh. Really?! I’m thinking Kris’ success with LLWD is completely independent of Adam. And since it is platinum, I’m thinking a whole lot of folks don’t mind it being “pushed down their throats.” Or maybe I just am not a conspiracy theory type of gal.

  53. Martha

um..exactly who are the “they” who are pushing Kris down our throats? Or who are trying to trying to hold Adam back? Kris having a platinum single and Top 5/Top 10 radio hit has nothing to do with Adam having a gold album and a gold single that is climbing the charts. And if “they” are trying to hold Adam back, then how does he even have a gold album and a gold single? The success or failure of these two people is INDEPENDENT of one another. What is getting REALLY TIRED are fans of one of the Idols (no matter who that Idol may be — Adam, Kris, one of the Davids, etc) who constantly scream about non-existent conspiracies.

PS: Jason Castro finished 4th — not 5th — and he and Kris sound basically nothing alike.

  54. martha:

    Ignore, ignore, ignore.
Be like Kris and just ignore the negatives.
    (Me talking to myself)

  55. since in usa, ‘they’ are pushing Kris down our throats and trying to hold Adam back for awhile till Kris does better. It has become tiresome.

martha, no one has ever pushed Kris down anyone’s throat. Instead, Kris has snuck (I know that’s not a word) into our throats, as well as our lives. Denial is futile. Kris and Adam are both doing their thang. I’ve seen some of your kudos(?) for Kris (I think) so a little confused. Of course YMMV. If so, okay, but bold letters don’t speak to me louder than non-bold, just giving my opinion.

I just always like to point out what Kris is doing and has done.

Well so much for the “American Dream” huh? To future and current idols, if you have raw talent that can grow don’t bother, no one wants you. We don’t care what you have to offer down the road. Please make sure you can be amazing from day one, otherwise you’re not worth our time. (Tongue firmly planted in cheek.) ;)

  57. I am glad to hear that Asia’h Eperson from Season 7 got signed to Babyface. I remember being disappointed when she was cut.

  58. Seriously. I wonder what “shocking changes” they are planning?

They’ll follow the model of Season 9 Idol by filling the top 20 spots mainly with people who have no sense of rhythm and can’t actually dance?

Oh…and hire Sinbad or Jerry Seinfeld as the permanent fourth judge.

Just kidding. I’m actually enjoying Season 9 Idol. Although I hope that I don’t end up with the feeling I had during most weeks of Season Six, which was “Does anybody here actually want to *win* this thing?” … I enjoy watching a learning curve, but I do hope a few of the finalists start showing a little more oomph and passion in their performances, as their nerves wear off.

  59. Here are a few guesses about SYTYCD shocking changes:

*No more judge saves for the bottom 3. Lowest scoring contestants get the boot from Top 20 on (no more pimping favorites – that’ll never happen).

    *Contestants can choreograph routines themselves.

*Contestants change partners every week (good for people who get “duds”).

*Voting options are expanded to include text messaging (hope not).

*Contestants start by dancing in their genre so audience can see their dancing in their own style first (may be tough with couples if 2 of same style aren’t on show – thinking of krump & Russell from last season).

*Judge changes – Maybe Mary Murphy isn’t on the show anymore, and she is being replaced by Mia. Obviously Nigel is on the show. Maybe they move back to the rotating judge chair.

I don’t care whether a contestant is an experienced professional or not, but it just isn’t fun to watch somebody who is so uncomfortable on stage it makes ME feel uncomfortable watching them. There seem to be several contestants in this category this year.

Certain people just have stage presence (whether experienced or not) and certain people do not. I suppose with experience some people can gain stage presence, but a large part of it appears to be inborn. Experience can enhance that underlying comfort level on stage, but if you are so scared you throw up before you perform, I’m not interested in watching you perform–no matter how good you are. It’s just not fun for me any more because it makes me feel too uncomfortable.

To take it even further, if you are uncomfortable and scared on stage and you are mediocre, that is a TOTAL deal killer in my book.
