‘Idol’ finalist Durbin is singing through Tourette’s

Among those turning heads on this season’s American Idol is contestant James Durbin. Notable for his impressive vocal range, Durbin, 22, of Santa Cruz, Calif., has also caught viewers’ attention with his frank and moving discussion about having been diagnosed with Asperger and Tourette syndromes.

At an Idol reception last week, Durbin told USA TODAY that he loves hearing that people are inspired by his history of overcoming adversity “because it fuels me to do better and to push myself even further.”

Burning ‘American Idol’ Question: Will Aerosmith Perform?

Which begs the question, what about Aerosmith? Will Steven Tyler’s group perform on the show? Tyler’s manager Allen Kovac claims Steven came up with the idea to approach “Idol” during a meeting at Betty Ford Center last winter, as the two strategized how to spread his—and the group’s—brand. So now would be the time to cash in, right? Yes, and attempts are being made.
..
Sources told me about a harried label A&R exec recently traveling between different floors in the same Hollywood hotel to mediate between band principals Tyler and Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry, whose fabled stormy relationship has hit another rough spot even before Tyler took the “Idol” gig.

Still others report the two have entered a détente, agreeing to start recording a new album sometime this summer, and carve out some touring time before Tyler starts season 2 of the show. Inside sources report Tyler has a one-year contract with a network option that they are almost certain to pick up after this year’s success.

Idoloonies: New Leaders (Pia! Stefano!), Spinoff Ideas (Peggi Blu!), and a Chris Medina Chat!

Two months into American Idol‘s tenth season, and we’ve got ourselves what appears to be an extremely promising Top 13. What’s more, after last week’s semifinal performances, some unexpected power players have emerged on both the men’s and women’s sides of the competition. In the latest installment of Idoloonies, my cohosts and I talk about the rise of Scotty McCreery, Stefano Langone, and Pia Toscano; our problems with Lauren Alaina’s interview packages; some of Top 24 week’s most disastrous performances (hello, Jordan Dorsey!); and the big injustice of an otherwise terrific Wild Card round (Kendra, we won’t forget you!).

‘Idol’s James Durbin: Tourette’s Doesn’t Affect My Performances

“Tourette’s hasn’t affected me whatsoever in my performances. It goes away completely when I’m signing, ” he explains.

“When I’m done singing and I’m getting it out, it kind of comes out. But when the music is playing and I’m singing, I have not a care in the world. I’m at home on the stage. I feel so comfortable. When the crowd has their fists pumping in the air and Judas Priest is playing and I just get to tell the world, I may be this guy with Tourette’s, but there’s no telling what I’m gonna do next, and America — you got another thing coming!”

Gwyneth Paltrow Has ‘Guts’ On ‘Glee, ‘ Mom Says

Gwyneth Paltrow doesn’t want you to “forget” her! The awards-show regular is set to make her return to “Glee” on Tuesday night (March 8), reprising her role of Holly Holiday. This time she’s going to get saucy while teaching the students of McKinley High sex ed.

On Tuesday’s episode, Paltrow will put her spin on Prince’s “Kiss, ” “Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)” by Joan Jett and Fleetwood Mac’s classic, “Landslide.” Paltrow’s renaissance as a pop star may be surprising to fans, but her mother, “Paul” star Bythe Danner, admits that seeing her daughter belt out top 40 hits is nothing new for her.

Mia Michaels Brings Down The ‘House’

If you’ve been missing the total-murderation genius of choreographer Mia Michaels since “So You Think You Can Dance” went on hiatus, then you must’ve been just as purple-winded as I was to witness her return to the Fox network this week. Her latest piece of heartwork? A delightful dream-sequence scene on “House, ” set to the old jazz standard “Get Happy, ” with the doctor and Cuddy gliding across the stage like a true dream come true.

Only Mia Michaels could draw a performance out of Hugh Laurie like this:

‘Dancing With the Stars’: Kirstie Alley and Maks’ chemistry… everything you dreamed it would be

Maks and his 60-year-old partner sat down with ABC during this season’s official portrait session and one key learning from their first few rehearsals is that Kirstie’s body isn’t doing everything it’s told.

“He’ll go, ‘just put your hips like this, ‘ but they don’t go that direction, ” Alley explains. “It’s like he’s shoving my things into position.”

Maks does not agree. “We have tape to prove that there’s no shoving, ” he says.”I’m very gentle.” Laughter ensues.
