Weight Watchers’ stock skyrockets amid membership increases, program makeover

Weight Watchers’ profits have jumped off the scale.

The diet company’s stock rocketed 46% Thursday amid word that a spike in new members worldwide and the growth of its online business propelled earnings last quarter.

Also helping the shares was Weight Watchers’ prediction that revenue would grow 15% to 20% this year amid a big increase in subscribers, especially in the U.S.

Travis, Bice coming to RiverFest

Country music singer Randy Travis has listed the Gadsden date on his website for weeks, but The Chamber of Gadsden and Etowah County said it only recently got confirmation with a signed contract.

Travis will headline the event on June 11, which kicks off with entertainment from The Chamber’s Take the Stage competition, followed by country music singer Jessie James and Birmingham’s Bo Bice, known for his rock and country performances that made him famous a few years ago on the hit television show “American Idol.”

Siobhan Magnus pays homage to artistic idol Gorey

Barnstable belter Siobhan Magnus made a national splash last year when her screams and fashion sense dazzled audiences and most judges on “American Idol.” She’s been anything but idle ever since — writing songs, working with her band Lunar Valve (check them on and just last week laying down original tracks in a Nashville studio.

She took time off from music this week and made the drive to Boston to pay homage to a longtime hero and fellow Cap Cod notable. Magnus, 20, met us at the Boston Athenaeum to take in the new exhibit, “Elegant Enigmas: The Art of Edward Gorey.”

Pickler has taken advantage of her time in the spotlight by recording two albums (she’s working on a third) and performing all over the country.

Pickler said her life has been a blur since her tryout for “Idol, ” singing first-year winner Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” and Martina McBride’s “A Broken Wing.”

Q&A with Diana DeGarmo, star of ‘9 to 5: The Musical’

“9 to 5: The Musical, ” based on the film starring Dolly Parton, is coming to ASU Gammage Auditorium February 22 to 27. The show follows the story of three friends who hatch a plan to get control of their company. Diana DeGarmo will be playing Doralee Rhodes, the character Dolly Parton portrayed in the original film. DeGarmo spoke with The State Press about the musical, her predecessor and what she’s been up to since she was runner-up in the third season of “American Idol.”
