How Simon Cowell helped take us from meritocracy to mediocrity in a decade

In its review of the decade broadcast on New Year’s Eve, the BBC cut from footage of those planes smashing into the Twin Towers to a man called Will Young winning the original incarnation of The X Factor — as if these two crimes against humanity were equal in their devastation.

They are not, of course, although there are similarities. The mastermind behind each atrocity remains at large, planning new miseries for the rest of us. Both have become so familiar to us through their evil intent that they have made cameo appearances in popular American cartoon programmes — Osama Bin Laden in South Park and Simon Cowell in The Simpsons. Bin Laden cannot be found while Cowell cannot be avoided.

Idol airplay: It’s beginning to look less like Christmas

Come Wednesday, when we see how much music sales fell through the floor the week after Christmas, everybody can take a little solace in the fact that their favorite new singles picked up quite a bit of airplay as holiday tunes started vacating the charts.

Kelly Clarkson’s Already Gone, of course, remains atop USA TODAY’s Mediabase-powered Hot AC chart, and in the Top 10 at AC and Top 40, making it an easy Number One on our American Idol airplay chart.

Katharine McPhee is having more fun as a blond

In 2006, Katharine McPhee was Adam Lambert minus the black nail polish — a California-bred contestant who made it all the way to the final two on “American Idol” and lost (to Taylor Hicks). Three years later, signed to Verve as a newly bleached blond, the Sherman Oaks native is set to release her second album, “Unbroken, ” a metaphor for McPhee’s own undeterred will and a back-to-basics approach to pop music.

While working on “Unbroken, ” you took co-writing retreats down to Nashville. What is it about that city that inspires good songs?

Katharine McPhee, Ke$ha kick off 2010 with sturdy new albums

Maybe all she had to do was go blonde.

Ever since she was runner-up on the fifth season of American Idol, ” and probably for a long time before that, the camera-friendly Katharine McPhee has had no problem getting attention.

Turning that attention into a serious recording career has been another story.

Her major label debut from 2007 was pretty much a yawner, despite a No. 2 single, and despite a marketing campaign that heavily emphasized her looks. But with a new label – the jazz bastion Verve Records – and the aforementioned switch from brunette to blonde, the singer sounds like she’s got a whole lot more going for her the second time around.

Underwood, Fisher worked fast to spread engagement news

Carrie Underwood says she and fiance Mike Fisher knew they had to work fast to tell friends and family about their engagement if they wanted to be the ones to let them know.

“The night it happened we had to call everybody quickly because we knew the news would get out pretty quick and within two hours someone had texted Mike and it was like, ‘Yeah, your little secret is out, ‘” Carrie told an Ottawa radio station Saturday.

USA Today

Underwood braces for trials of long-distance engagement

“The first few years are going to be difficult with his job, ” she said. “You know, he’s stationed here and it seems that this past year when I’ve had time off they’ve had away games, so I’ve been really lucky over the holidays that they’ve been at home.”

Underwood said she and Fisher will pass good health onto their kids. “Mike and I will work out together. It’s just kind of fun and I just know that no matter what, we’ll both be around for a long time and we’ll teach our kids good, healthy habits.” She laughed at reports stating she wants five children.

“Kids are great. I don’t want them now. I couldn’t imagine. We have friends with four kids and I think ‘I admire you, but I don’t think so.’ ”

Following Susan Boyle’s rise to fame

I have a confession. I am a fan of reality TV shows. I pretend it is because my kids want to watch them, but secretly I’m hooked.

I clearly remember sitting down on Saturday 11 April to watch Britain’s Got Talent.

I, like every viewer outside of Blackburn, gawped as Susan Magdaleine Boyle walked onto the stage to face judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan.

Adam Lambert, shiny and fab for Gridlock 2009 — with a flashback to his Upright Cabaret gig on New Year’s Eve 2008

OK, so, Adam Lambert’s set at the Gridlock show on New Year’s Eve at Paramount Pictures wasn’t televised, but judging by the number of YouTube clips available, that didn’t really matter.

Adam, done up all “shiny and fabulous, ” sang 10 songs from his new album — the first time, he says, they did so many tunes from “For Your Entertainment.” The finale? Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love, ” which was a crowd pleaser when he was on “American Idol.”

What a difference a year makes? Lambert revealed, according to the L.A. Times review, that on New Year’s Eve 2008 he had also performed — as part of a cabaret just down the road on La Cienega Boulevard. (Check out that video, embedded after the jump.)

Another Fallen ‘Idol’: Katharine McPhee, ‘Unbroken’

IT HAS TO be tough to be just another pleasant voice in the ever-growing pool of former “American Idol” contestants.

It’s even tougher when you’re Katharine McPhee and in 2006 you were the runner-up in the “AI” season with (arguably) the greatest number of successful alums: besides winner Taylor Hicks, the show’s fifth season also produced Elliot Yamin, AMA winner Chris Daughtry and Taylor Swift tourmate Kellie Pickler.

McPhee did well enough on “Idol” to get her to the second-place slot, but her self-titled 2007 debut album never delivered the contemporary-pop hits that she seemed so capable of producing. She was dropped from RCA Records after its disappointing sales and moved to Verve Forecast for her new sophomore effort, “Unbroken.”

Express Night Out

Katharine McPhee to Simon Cowell: I Don’t Want to Hear It!

Katharine McPhee certainly shook things up a bit in 2009 by shedding her old long brunette look” and opting for a hot blonde crop. But one opinion on the look that the Idol” alum has no interest in hearing is that of Simon Cowell’s.

He hasn’t seen it yet and [I] wouldn’t really value or want to know his opinion about hair, ” McPhee told Tarts very bluntly at City of Hope’s 12 Stops at Christmas” event in Hollywood recently. I spent a year and a half working on the record and this (the new hair) was an expression of me figuring out what I wanted to do. I think it’s a phase so we’ll see how long it lasts for, but right now I’m having fun.”

Five more questions with Katharine McPhee

Your season of Idol” had David Foster and Andrea Bocelli as mentors, both of whom you worked with after the show. Who do you think would make good mentors for season 9?
They should have Kelly Clarkson come back and be a mentor. She’s someone who has the success to back it up, and also the experience to understand what the contestants are going through. And I still think David Foster would be a great one to have back. He’s had such longevity in his career; I think it’s important to have that.

Do you keep in touch with Taylor Hicks?
I don’t, actually. Not because we don’t like each other, but we all had to change our numbers so many times and a lot of us lost touch. I keep in touch with Kellie Pickler and Chris Daughtry. I don’t know why I don’t keep in touch with Taylor. I like the guy.

    Really he does.

“I think it’s amazing, this game, and I’m going to work on the No. 2 version,” he tells Kelowna.

Hmm! Wonder who is in Vancouver? So excited for new Cookie music. Bring it on.

  10. Did anyone else see this new AI commercial? Really cool ad that highlights all the big successes (#1 hits, Grammys, 40 millions records sold, etc). Every winner is shown except Taylor who continues to be scorned, geez. Chris and Jennifer Hudson are shown though.

eta: Vancouver..What part of Canada does Raine Maida live..?

  11. Wonder who is in Vancouver? So excited for new Cookie music.

Probably Raine Maida and his wife Chantal (whose last name I won’t even try to spell!). David has mentioned in interviews that he’ll be writing with them again. I doubt that he’s writing with Chad Kroeger.

Nice to have you back, MJ!

  12. Really cool ad that highlights all the big successes (#1 hits, Grammys, 40 millions records sold, etc).

That ad is awesome and smart. I think it’s a great reminder to the public that AI isn’t just any other reality competition show– it is not a joke. It creates real music careers, and is a phenomenon in the music industry that ought to be recognized. Don’t think AGT or Dancing with the Stars or any of these shows can boast a fraction of what AI can in terms of real-world post-show success of its contestants. Can you tell I’m biased? Haha. I love AI.

Cool, WWFM has 7 adds already this morning.

Cool indeed. Oh, adds days – how I missed thee!

But wish HAC would get off their butts and add it more – imo WWFM is an even better fit for HAC.

ETA: Looking at these charts really makes me appreciate how awesome a lot of the AI guys (and girls) are doing! Kelly, Carrie, Daughtry, Adam, Kris! Horray for them! And this is why I ignore peeps who scorn AI.

I am interested in hearing more new songs from him.

That is good news. I wonder when they had time to rehearse them. He’s been on vacation basically for two weeks, and was pretty busy before then. Hope something will pop up on video from the various appearances this week.

  15. Is there any word yet about whether Adam is appearing at the PCA’s this week? I haven’t heard anything – which makes me think he probably isn’t.

  16. I also thought WWFM would be a better fit for HAC, but only two adds this morning. Maybe it has to do with the general genre of artist? It doesn’t really make sense to me. For example, Gaga’s ‘Speechless’ is an amazing ballad, but I can’t see HAC playing it, even if it is released as a single after Bad Romance. Top 40 doesn’t seem to want to play LLWD in my area, but I hear it on HAC. Just the opposite for WWFM.

  17. I also thought WWFM would be a better fit for HAC, but only two adds this morning. Maybe it has to do with the general genre of artist?

You know, I kind of have that thought too. I just posted on the media thread about Kris being more of a band artist, and Adam more of a solo artist, and that distinction may also be at play in terms of airplay. Of course, Kris is also doing well on Top 40, but seems to be doing the best on HAC, which is more geared toward the Daughtry, KoL, band sound that Kris (imo) represents.

Adam, otoh, is more of a pop solo artist – which may make Top 40 take to him more quickly than HAC. Who knows?

  18. Haven’t heard anything one way or the other about Adam going to the PCAs. Kris is back in Arkansas getting no sleep while doing absolutely nothing (according to his twitter) and enjoying the snow — which confirms the earlier note that he won’t be at the PCAs.

I read on another site that there is another AI commercial that uses LLWD as the background music and focuses on Kris’ journey. It supposedly aired during the Sun Bowl? Has anyon seen it?

  19. Looking through the list from Idol Chatter of airplay for the Idols and #10 pops out at me. The Rainbow is Cook’s top spinning song for the week? It must have been played on a lot of year end syndicated programs. It’s been out for over 1 1/2 years.

  20. I hope Cookie stays far away from Nickelback!

Amen to that. Please, please, please, lol.

The Rainbow is Cook’s top spinning song for the week?

There’s nothing to do but bow down to the Rainbow. That thing is just amazing.

  21. Ok, I am inordinately excited that David Cook will soon be walking the streets of my fair, but wet, city. I hope that he brings a big umbrella, because the January rains have started with a vengeance. I will not stalk, I will not stalk…

Vancouver has a pretty big alternative rock scene – I’ve heard comparable to Tulsa, actually. Also, some really big name producers and recording studios. Aerosmith and Bon Jovi often record their albums here. I suspect that he has come here to work with Raine and Chantal like some one else suggested, but my biggest fantasy is that he is going to hook up with Elvis Costello, who lives here part-time. Obviously this is 100% unlikely. Elvis is a genius and a legend, and Cook should be so lucky as to ever achieve one ounce of his credibility or success, but I can dream can’t I?

And it’s a freaking coronation song, who woulda thunk? I have no issues with the fact that he doesn’t want to sing it anymore. I’m satisfied that Ryan Star will sing it to him…tis all good.

  23. Of course, Michael Buble and David Foster also live here part-time. Heh. Now THAT would be an interesting and unexpected musical direction…JK

Seriously though, I’m guessing he is coming here to work with legendary producer, Bob Rock (Metallica, The Cult, Bon Jovi, Veruca Salt, Tal Bachman, Bryan Adams, and Our Lady Peace).

  27. I’m telling you the magic rainbow will never die! Its skeery.

I’m mostly thinking its Raine/Chantal in Canada since he mentioned them in that AI Now interview, but then again he also said there were names he couldnt disclose. I’m going with Raine for now though, which is a good thing..and a whole lotta pretty!

  28. I read on another site that there is another AI commercial that uses LLWD as the background music and focuses on Kris’ journey. It supposedly aired during the Sun Bowl? Has anyon seen it?

I saw it. It focused on both Kris’s and Adam’s journey. It started off playing Adam’s Mad World, then went to some generic music for a while, all while showing clips of Adam and Kris at auditions, performing, getting critique, and some judge’s comments. It then went to the finale, and when they announced Kris as the winner, it broke into LLWD, which then played out over the rest of the promo, which included more of Kris at the finale, and then a montage of scenes from the new auditions with contestants in line, in the crowds, celebrating, etc.

  29. I’m going with Raine for now though, which is a good thing..and a whole lotta pretty!

Pictures of the pretty would be very nice, lol.

  32. I am laughing thinking about how many tweets David got when he initially said he was packing his winter coat.

I’m confused about his second tweet/amendment and what triggered it. So is the big takeaway that he doesn’t need a winter coat in Vancouver because it’s raining?

So I thought Raine/Chantal live in the eastern part of Canada? I remember DC tweeting that his Canada shows would be in Raine Maida territory, and he never made it to western Canada.

  33. David Foster – with Cook? Gads, no. besides Foster was downright mean in commenting on Cookie during his season.

David Foster never had a good thing to say about David Cook. In fact, he was intentionally insulting. If I were Cook and that man approached me now, I’d spit on him.

Yeah, most Vancouverites will wear shorts and a hoodie in the dead of winter just to prove how mild it is here. LOL. But we are DEFINITELY not California.

I’m pretty sure Raine/OLP records most of their stuff in Vancouver with Bob Rock.

  37. WWFM got a Rhythmic add in Tulsa? WTF? But not many HAC this week. Although HAC San Diego added, way to support your hometown boy!

Not quite sure if this is the case, but IIRC there is sometimes an issue involved with a station transitioning from one format to another – as in, this could be an old rhythmic station that is moving over to HAC or POP, but is still going under the old classification in the system.

  38. Yes, Tierbee, we are very sensitive to being perceived as an icy, snowy hinterland like our mortal enemy (all in good fun) Toronto. Imagine Seattle – basically we have the same weather.

You need to stop the false advertising. It took me over an hour to dig the sled dogs out of their shed this morning so I could get to work after last night’s snow fall. I wish I could tell people how cold it is here, but the mercury froze. Seriously, would the IOC be stupid enough to give the Winter Olympics to a city with no snow? Poor Cookie is going to arrive here without his parka and all those evil tricksters will just be high-fiving each other. Good thing they sell mukluks at the airport.

Maybe he’s going to write with Sarah. Foster lives in Victoria, so I think we are safe from that colaboration.

  43. Kristen-don’t forget about the tricky business of keeping the igloo warn without melting it.

Totally. The Canadian government spends a fortune on research to solve just this problem. My neighbour fell asleep last week with his space heater on and woke up when a half-melted ice block fell down and smashed his collection of souvenier Molson cans. I thought we were going to have to put him on a suicide watch.

I also heard the quiz you about hockey one wrong answere you are out of there.I have not seen my relatives in years need to study more .

The entire nation waited with bated breath last week to find out who was on Team Canada (if you don’t know what sport that’s refering to, you aren’t Canadian). Carrie’s fiance didn’t make the team, but he’s on the bubble in case anybody gets injured. Carrie might find another use for that baseball bat from “Before He Cheats”.

I have seen Adam and the band live a few times now but on NYE at Gridlock it was not Adam Lambert Solo Artist on stage with backing band it was Adam Lambert and His Band on stage. Monte and Tommy are very upfront and the three all interact with each other during songs and Longenieu has a drum solo so he is featured too. Adam and Monte already have a history together playing in a hard rock band and these 5 people are quickly becoming a cohesive unit so I think Adam is not thinking he is a solo artist as much as he is the lead singer in a band.

I agree with you, it not just Adam up on stage, it’s Adam and the band. What I love about Adam, is his willingness to share the spotlight with others. I am sure Monte, Tommy, Longineau and Lisa are all going to get their time in the spotlight. From watching the videos of the Gridlock concert, Monte is the glue that will hold the band together. Plus he’s known Adam long enough to know what he wants without Adam saying a word. Adam has to be thanking his lucky star, that someone of Monte’s experience and talent is behind him supporting him 100%.

  48. Oh very cool, I was thinking HAC adds were today.

Monte is great in the band, I wish them well.

Ok – while I agree with you (and have seen the same vids – lol) – what I mean is not exactly that the band doesn’t matter, or that they’re not good (which is CERTAINLY not true) – but rather that there is a pronounced difference between the way I see Adam evolving as an artist and the way I see Kris evolving. Adam, imo, will always be a solo artist, just in terms of him being the main attraction, standout, etc. Kris I see as being more a part of a band. Both good, and the difference is kinda hard to explain. This is the best example I can think of:

    * Adam would be like Freddie Mercury in Queen (disclaimer: not saying he is or is not as good as Freddie, lol) That certainly doesn’t take away from how good the rest of the band is, how much they interact on stage, etc, but Freddie sorta stands out on his own.

    * Kris would be more like KoL – the band is almost stronger than any one part (again, not saying Kris and the band are as good as, or not as good as, KoL)

Ok, not sure if that made any sense – but that’s my take on it :-)

  50. iirc, Top40 adds are in today/tomorrow while HAC adds are a day later.

Other wa around. HAC/AC and Country songs go for adds on Monday. Top 40 songs go for adds on Tuesday (but some percentage of them are announced on Monday).

I don’t think anybody is claiming that Adam doesn’t mesh well with his band. I think they are just talking about how some songs are more “band songs”. Songs that are about the band rather than the soloist. There is some speculation that bands do better on HAC. Neither style is better than the other and most soloists have great relationship with their bands. It’s a debate about where the focus is for radio (not even talking about live performances). Of course, it’s all very debatable and I still don’t know what Randy is talking about when he calls something a “band song”, but that is pretty common for me (for you for me) when Randy is talking (i.e. I don’t know what he’s talking about, Dawg).

  51. Thanks Kirsten for correcting me. Guess we need to wait a bit longer for HAC speeding up with WWFM. Probably after it makes to top 30 in CHR?

  52. Kirsten – thanks, that is kinda, mostly what I was trying to say ;-) (re the whole band discussion).

And ITA with bridgette12 that Monte is a very very strong instrumental anchor for the band – he is a HUGE asset for Adam to have on his side.

  53. Guess we need to wait a bit longer for HAC speeding up with WWFM. Probably after it makes to top 30 in CHR?

It’s hard to say. These two formats don’t always move in lock-step. A song can get into top 10 in either format and not get signficant airplay in the other.

WWFM seems more like an HAC song to me than FYE did, but FYE’s growth in HAC was pretty much in step with it’s growth on Pop. Sometimes, it’s hard to say. Perhaps RCA has been focused mainly on Pop stations for now and needs to turn its attention to pushing it on HAC?

  54. Maybe he’s going to write with Sarah.

Well, Cook did say that he owns ALL of her records so he’s a big fan. But yeah, I’m thinking he’s writing with Chantal and Raine in BC.

  55. Thanks Kirsten for correcting me. Guess we need to wait a bit longer for HAC speeding up with WWFM. Probably after it makes to top 30 in CHR?

Y’all are really challenging my memory today. Maybe one of the DCO number nerds will appear and save the day? Heh. Anyway, I have a very vague memory of reading that a song needs to go Top 20 on HAC before it gets a rush of adds from the remaining stations, sorta like making Top 40 on CHR. People out there who know… is that true?

  56. I’m pretty sure Raine/OLP records most of their stuff in Vancouver with Bob Rock.

Thanks, suenigma. As usual, DC was being confusing with his “Raine Maida territory” reference, when, in fact, the guy has bases on both sides of Canada.

That’s hilarious that Vancouverites jumped to their city’s defense so quickly on twitter that DC had to retract his “winter coat” comment. I had no idea.

  57. Does Randy even say anything? I see his lips moving, but …..

LOL – I gave Randy a hard time by the end of S8, but I actually thought he had some of the most spot on critiques, at least in the early rounds of S8 – Group 1 and Group 2, for instance, he completely called out (properly) some good singers who chose bad songs, and he was one of the strongest champions of Adam early on, before Simon had gotten behind him 100%.

ETA: I’ve just been rewatching AI on Fox Reality Channel, which is why these things came to mind.

  58. That’s hilarious that Vancouverites jumped to their city’s defense so quickly on twitter that DC had to retract his “winter coat” comment. I had no idea.

Yeah, ’twas amusing. I have family in MN. I know real cold. But I still have a winter coat that I wear when temps are topping out in the mid-40s F/single digits C. If it’s raining, I carry an umbrella AND wear my winter coat. When it gets really cold, I wear my OTHER winter coat.

Guess we need to wait a bit longer for HAC speeding up with WWFM. Probably after it makes to top 30 in CHR?

I said in the airplay thread that I wonder if the recurrent airplay for Pink songs, and PDLM in particular, might be holding WWFM back. When those fade out, there might be more room for a Pink-penned song in the playlist.

  59. I said in the airplay thread that I wonder if the recurrent airplay for Pink, and PDLM in particular, might be holding WWFM back. When those fade out, there might be more room for a Pink-penned song in the playlist.

hmmm, why would there NOT be room for both PDLM and WWFM? they have a different sound, despite being penned by Pink. I doubt the average listener even knows the background of each song on the radio (meaning who wrote it, who produced it)…..and even if there was a similarity, nobody would care. A good song is a good song…..so if people think WWFM is a good song, it would not be held back by PDLM, not by DJs or listeners.

  60. Nickleback, Buble, Foster. . .runs screaming from North America.
But there’s also Bryan Adams, Sarah McLachlan, and some band called the Swollen Members.

LOL: “David Cook and the Swollen Members” (said with my best Beavis and Butthead impersonation). I’m hoping it’s Sarah M or Chantal K (the hubby can come along too, I guess).

    Oh, excellent point!

  62. I hope Cookie is writing with Raine. I put Raine on a lyrical genius pedestal. Of coarse when I was younger(and now still) I loved songs like Superman’s Dead, Clumsy, and Automatic Flowers.

ETA: I can’t also fail to mention 4am. Which I love.

  63. I’m not sure if this has been posted (apologies if it has).

Pollstar announced the top 50 concert tours of 2009

    28 $30.1M “American Idols Live”
46 $19.7M “So You Think You Can Dance”

Tours were Idols were one of the opening acts (I kept wanting to type “cats”. The influence of SuBo knows no bounds):

4 $82.5M Britney Spears (Jordin Sparks for part of the tour)
7 $69.8M Jonas Brothers (Jordin Sparks for part of the tour IIRC)
36 $25.5M Taylor Swift (BFF Kellie Pickler)

I always wonder how much of this stuff is scripted ahead of time. I guess we’ll never really know — unless Paula goes off her meds again and starts tweeting.

Oh, and as an East Coast (US) girl (who lived briefly in San Diego in the 90s), I just have to say that Vancouver is one of my Dream Cities. I’ve already told my older kid he’s going to college there. What schools should I tell him he’s applying to? ;-)

  65. Sorry if this is OT, but the Gridlock thread seems to be dead and it does go with the LA time article above. I was stunned at the amount of youTubes for the Gridlock concert. The view counts are in the thousands and growing. Hope this eventually translated to sales.

I wouldn’t count on that as I would imagine a lot of the views are by Adam fans who could not be at the event and could not see it for themselves snice it wasn’t on TV. I don’t know about others, but I often go back to favorite YouTube videos when I’m in the mood for a “pick-me-up”

  66. aa618892….I worry about all the illegal downloading. Seems like everyone is doing it these days.

  67. aa618892….I worry about all the illegal downloading. Seems like everyone is doing it these days.

It’s the same for every artist. I wouldn’t expect it to be any more of a factor for Adam as it is for any other artist whose fans are under 50.

  68. I don’t know about others, but I often go back to favorite YouTube videos when I’m in the moodd for a “pick-me-up”

Me, too. I fear I contribute greatly to the view counts for Cookie videos ;)

  69. @KrisAllenBand just tweeted confirming that they are playing 2 shows in the Philippines next month.

  70. Adam and Monte already have a history together playing in a hard rock band

Per Adam’s direct quote, the band Citizen Vein performed together three times.

We did three gigs and that was it and we recorded a couple things, like rough recordings, and I don’t know, it didn’t quite click.

It sticks in my mind because I was surprised after fans made a lot out of what they thought was a band background, Adam was very direct and upfront that he had not in fact gone beyond dipping a toe in this area. Although clearly he has quite a variety of different performing experiences.

  72. wow, even ADam has even tweeted about it:

Happy New Year guys!! I love that you want to support my music and call in requests, but please be mindful of how often you do so…

Open House Party is a great supporter of my songs, but when there is an organized group of fans calling stations nonstop,

… It understandably upsets them. Stations can track over-use of requests and fraudulent requests and I would hate to lose their support.

I really appreciate your passion and dedication to getting my music on the radio, but don’t drive the stations crazy! :) thanks friends!

  73. mary102, I have never seen Adam so moved to say so much. wow, he must be really feeling the pinch.

  74. Poor Adam just tweeted that he loved the fans support but (as per the link provided by sidewalkstory) he wants fans to be careful how many times they vote. Being disqualified for fans not voting appropriately is a killer for a guy trying to make his way in this crazy music world.

Yikes –he is trying hard and obviously some fans are trying way too hard in their quest to get recognition. I am not from the US so I do not partake in this type of voting.

Does anyone care to give a considered/knowledgeable guideline for the fans regarding this type of voting. We cannot have Adam being disqualifed based on “fans”!

Wow! They love the idols, don’t they? Is AI shown on TV there?

No wonder the two Davids had concerts there. How many concerts did they do? They seem to REALLY love Archie!

  76. I suspect those Adam tweets were written with his PR person right by his side….and unfortunately, the nutty ones who spend all night calling and tweeting radio stations are not going to pay any attention

  77. mary102, I have never seen Adam so moved to say so much. wow, he must be really feeling the pinch.

Yeah – I hate to see it. Between Neil and him – geez, they’re both being bombarded by crazy fans. It sucks for Adam, because the fans are trying to help, mean well, but obviously it has a very negative effect on him and his relationship with the radio stations. Talk about rock and a hard place :-(

  78. Does anyone care to give a considered/knowledgeable guideline for the fans regarding this type of voting. We cannot have Adam being disqualifed based on “fans”!

Well, I for one usually only vote once or twice, even for the “unlimited” vote polls (and most of them I never even find out about). As for radio stations, I believe the guideline is, ask for it if they’ve already played it, but even then I’d never consider requesting it in any kind of spam format. I might send an email, or call, but not do it twenty-thousand times a day.

  79. and I think you know who I am talking about.

Who are you talking about? Maybe if people tell her to stop…although crazies don’t listen to logic.

I’m not really concerned about this hurting Adam long-term, but come on, how are some adults so devoid of anything approaching logic or common sense or basic intelligence? Pathetic.

  80. Does anyone care to give a considered/knowledgeable guideline for the fans regarding this type of voting. We cannot have Adam being disqualifed based on “fans”!

I can’t. I never vote in stuff like this. In fact, I don’t even call into my local radio station.

I did go and vote for the PCAs though. Once for each category that Adam was in.

Mary: I don’t know that I would call that PO,ed. It seemed to be a statement that was articulate and very respectful.
I loved Neil’s note. He is such a snarky, smart ass. I think he just says whatever he wants to. I like him. :)

and I think you know who I am talking about.

I don’t. Can you give us a hint? This is because of one person’s twitter campaign?

  81. It sucks for Adam, because the fans are trying to help, mean well, but obviously it has a very negative effect on him and his relationship with the radio stations. Talk about rock and a hard place :-(

How much can she be trying to help when many have warned her and she continues her campaign? I saw her provide a list of the radio stations phone numbers so all her followers can call. And we had enablers here too asking her to make tweets. Just last week she got into a spat with TWO DJ’s on Twitter.

So totally discouraging. No common sense.

  82. Wow! They love the idols, don’t they? Is AI shown on TV there?

No wonder the two Davids had concerts there. How many concerts did they do? They seem to REALLY love Archie!

Yes, American Idol is broadcast on TV there.

  83. Does anyone care to give a considered/knowledgeable guideline for the fans regarding this type of voting. We cannot have Adam being disqualifed based on “fans”!

Well, I would assume that a radio station in Peoria is not that enthusiastic when fans from every state other than illinois are calling/online voting/requesting Adam…I also assume that they know what are “usual” amounts of requests for popular songs and artists and when they get spammed they know it…and they can track phone numbers and email addresses etc. so they know when stuff is coming from outside the listening area…I never listen to the radio, so I have never requested a song on the radio (well, not since I was 15) and I would only vote in an online poll/request etc. for my local station.

I have no idea what the deal with the OHP thing was…I thought it was a national show? have never listened to it.

  84. The two Davids did only one concert in the Philippines (Michael Johns did a few, if I recall correctly) but it was HUGE. Someone else may have the attendance figures. I still enjoy watching the closing song of Cookie’s there, A Daily AntheM, on YouTube. Archie came back on stage with DC and the band and thousands were singing along. I just got a little teary remembering it.

  85. some more goodness from the philippines… would love to see david go back there and perform for the fans soon…

Oh and so you all know, upon hearing this news, I laughed so hard. Y’all are nuts and I adore you for it. :)

FYI. That doesn’t mean to stop requesting!! Just try not to do it 30 times in one day…. Just Cool it on the redial/resend kick. :)

  87. Well, I would assume that a radio station in Peoria is not that enthusiastic when fans from every state other than illinois are calling/online voting/requesting Adam…

lol. I don’t request song from Peoria station even tho I’m in Chicago. But I did get to know there is a place called Peoria because of this adds/spin thing.

  88. Ozarka:

Thanks for that list – boy Archie is sure popular there, isn’t he?

I guess Kris better brush up on NoBo for his concert there next month! They might demand he sing it!

  89. How many concerts did they do?

Sorry, I’m unable to edit my previous post. They did only one concert. The 50,000 tickets that were available were sold out, but there were even more in attendance who watched from behind those 50,000. Estimates of actual numbers vary.

  90. I don’t think Adam is pissed off. This is his last tweet:

Oh and so you all know, upon hearing this news, I laughed so hard. Y’all are nuts and I adore you for it.

Well, maybe he is/isn’t pissed off, but i am sure that both he and RCA are concerned because he is a new artist trying to get radio support and trying to do it while being a man in a female dominated genre/former idol contestant/polarizing/gay man and the last thing he needs is have his fan base alienate radio stations…not saying it has reached that level, but best try to nip it in the bud before it gets too out of control….but again, i seriously doubt that the fans who are engaging in this behavior 1) recognize that they are, and 2) will heed his pleas.

  91. I guess Kris better brush up on NoBo for his concert there next month! They might demand he sing it!

Weren’t people upset that Cookie didn’t do Time of My Life when he was there? Or have I just lost my mind? :)

  92. A tweet to Adam from Larry Flick-a DJ from Siruis Radio in New York:

@adamlambert I’m finding that you have the most respectful, if wildly passionate fans I’ve ever had to deal with in my radio career.

    and

    another tweet:

Glamberts are unlike any fans I’ve ever dealt with. They’re passionate, but they’re oddly sane and totally fun.

  93. Oh sure, now Adam’s fans figure out how to vote! lol

    ha, that is funny!

  94. How much can she be trying to help when many have warned her and she continues her campaign?

Once again, This is because of ONE person and her tweets or twitter campaign?
She is a very busy little bee, isn’t she! :)

They did only one concert. The 50,000 tickets that were available were sold out,

  95. I guess Kris better brush up on NoBo for his concert there next month! They might demand he sing it!

Geez, he’s never going to sing that song again!
    It’s so not his style..

  96. Oh sure, now Adam’s fans figure out how to vote! lol

lol. probably not yet. Knowing to vote does not equal to knowing how it works.

  97. Once again, This is because of ONE person and her tweets or twitter campaign?
She is a very busy little bee, isn’t she!

They need to hire her! Anyone that can get on about five different Adam fan boards and spread the word with different usernames and get that accomplished is doing some good ground work. Gotta give kudos where they are due!

  98. Geez, he’s never going to sing that song again!
    It’s so not his style..

Haha, maybe they’ll figure out a way to rock it up a bit. But no, I don’t imagine he ever wants to be reminded of that song again!

  99. Yeah – I hate to see it. Between Neil and him – geez, they’re both being bombarded by crazy fans. It sucks for Adam, because the fans are trying to help, mean well, but obviously it has a very negative effect on him and his relationship with the radio stations. Talk about rock and a hard place

Twitter should be banned from the universe. Why can’t people just use common sense and vote reasonably in their own areas? Like hello! it’s not brain surgery!

…and don’t get me going on those who harrass Adam’s friends and family. Get lives people. :(

  100. eta: Vancouver..What part of Canada does Raine Maida live..?

California ;) They come back up a lot but they live and have a studio there.

ETA: I can’t also fail to mention 4am. Which I love.

So agree. One of my all time favourite songs. So I’d be in if they were working together too.

But there’s also Bryan Adams, Sarah McLachlan, and some band called the Swollen Members.

Bryan’s in London most likely and despite the name..Swollen Members – They had a really cool song with Nelly Furtado way back when.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dh_i47dQ9GE

but I’m thinking not them. lol

My uneducated guess would be Bob Rock too. But there are a lot of people aside from Bob that could be really interesting. Can’t wait to see.

and NoBo, we were talking elsewhere about the song that wouldn’t die and came to the conclusion it might be cursed. lol

But that being said – and I sort of hate the song – but I am a little, tiny bit curious over what Kris could do with it with the band called Crack.

  101. Adam also tweeted this – which shows he acknowledges and appreciates his fans’ efforts (even if sometimes they go a little too far).

Woohoo!! Thanks to all who voted for the Z100 best new artist!! I’m honored :)

    sidewalkstory:
and I think you know who I am talking about.

Well, I have an idea who you’re thinking of, sidewalkstory, but I happen to believe you’re wrong. I seriously doubt this can all be laid at the doorstep of one enthusiastic tweeter (and without any solid evidence how can one even make an accusation?) and those station phone numbers are on every fan blog out there.

  102. Wow! That must have been an amazing experience for them! I wished I would have watched some of the youtube links for this. Are they still available to watch?

Oh, yes, there are tons of them. Just use YouTube’s search engine for either of their names plus the word “Manila” or “Philippines.” They both also did some promotional appearances in some of the local TV variety shows just days before the actual concert.

Here’s one YouTube where both Cook and Archie perform together on the same stage, singing the final song of the concert “A Daily AntheM.”

  103. “Does anyone care to give a considered/knowledgeable guideline for the fans regarding this type of voting. We cannot have Adam being disqualifed based on “fans”!”

Soon after Kris won idol- on one of his fan sites there was a detailed list from a “Clay fan”from Clay’s website , detailing what they had learnt the hard way . So it showed the right way to request & not hassle radio stations & the best way to vote on different sites!! I have no idea now where I saw this but there may be a Clay fan on here who can access this list !!

  104. Kris may have to sing his coronation song. I remember that Taylor had to do Do I Make You Proud, when he was appearing on Asian Idol and he may have done it in the Philippines also. He like Cook did not perform it on his tour. most Idols would like to forget their coronation songs, but sometimes it’s hard. Kris was luckier than most not having to do it on the tour but some places it’s the music they identify you with.

  105. Video of Danny from this morning’s radio station visit is up from south Florida station WKIS
http://videos.wkis.com/ under entry for Studio B.
Danny does his single My Best Days and then the video cuts to another of his new songs Be Somebody.

  106. Kris may have to sing his coronation song.

hmm there’s only 10 position between Nobo and LLWD on this chart, so there is chance that LLWD will continue to climb and that he sings it and forget about NoBo. We’ll see

  107. “Kris may have to sing his coronation song. I remember that Taylor had to do Do I Make You Proud, when he was appearing on Asian Idol and he may have done it in the Philippines also. This could be the case. Here in Australia its still only No Boundaries for sale on i-Tunes [& a piano version of LLWD] – so in the Philippines NB’s may still be more well known than LLWD at the moment!
I liked No Boundaries as a recorded song but to sing live is very difficult- so hopefully they can get away with it just being on the loud speaker before his performance!!

Oh & I’m also sorry you couldn’t make the page numbers work MJ. Hopefully when the other upgrade is done , you can make it work as reading all the comments , that seemed to be the number one frustration! Thanks for trying though!

  108. I’d like to add somethings about the Philippine concert that the two Davids had. It was a wonderful experience for them and for their fans. There are many videos up on You-tube for you to discover and enjoy. The venue held up to 50,000 fans, but it was reported there were just as many outside the venue who listened to it. Here is one of the many touching videos from that night, where Cook went into the crowd, and also at one point, said that David Archuleta was one of his best friends. The song that he sang in this clip is one that he wrote prior to Idol and was included on his Independent album “Analog Heart”. I know there are some better visual of this performance, but this will do.

    Straight Ahead

The fans in the Philippines will make any idol’s visit a memorable one. They are unbelievably supportive, while also being classy and well-mannered.

ETA: I have to link this one. “It’s Always Be My Baby” performed at the Philippines concert.

  109. Weren’t people upset that Cookie didn’t do Time of My Life when he was there? Or have I just lost my mind? :)

tierbee, as I remember it – they really wanted Cook to do Always Be My Baby – it was a top hit in the Philippines for months before the concert. So David did sing it for them. They would have been terribly disappointed if he didn’t do that song.

  110. wordnerdarchie –

A couple of my favorite videos from the Manilla concert (besides the songs) are:

    1) the video that Cook tweeted to Archie right after he joined Twitter, saying “good times”

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJCAN4gw770

It was the final song, the two of them together, shot from backstage and shows all the people from their prospective.

    2) Archie’s heartfelt thank you to the fans on behalf of him and Cook after the concert. He was so overwhelmed. I don’t think either of them will ever forget it.

  111. Weren’t people upset that Cookie didn’t do Time of My Life when he was there? Or have I just lost my mind? :)

ABMB was on the charts forever, only to be dethroned by TOML. I’m sure a DC fan from the Philippines probably has actual chart info, but I remember that bit. I’m pretty sure the audience wanted both. David rocked up ABMB and made the band learn it, but he’s been pretty steadfast about not playing Magic Rainbows, so that stayed off the setlist. I’m sure there were disappointed people, but the concert was kickass, one song up or down wasn’t going to change that, and overall the response was incredibly positive. I think Avalanche was getting radio play then, too. Need to check setlist to see if they played it. Gimme a minute.
ETA: Yep, he did. He also played TWIK.

Kris isn’t going to be required to sing NoBo. If he really doesn’t want to, he doesn’t have to. But if the Philippines actually love the song, he probably will, I’m thinking. David had a bit of an advantage over Kris, in that he had several songs do well on the charts in the Philippines, so he could afford to not do one without much brouhaha. Does Kris have any songs aside from LLWD and NoBo being played on Philippine radio right now?

  112. JRB5776, thanks for reminding me of the backstage shot (it’s believed that the 09Declaration channel is maintained by Cook’s personal manager, Michelle) and the thank you vlog from David A. It’s been a long time since I’ve watched either of those two videos. It’s great to see them again.

ETA: If you check the channel that I linked ABMB from, you’ll see many more high quality videos for both Cook and Archuleta there. It’s well worth spending a little bit of time viewing them. They include, for example, Avalanche, Light On, Come Back to Me, as well as Crush, Stand By Me, and Angel.

  113. And David’s twitering.

@thedavidcook After 1.5 hours in customs, followed by a mad dash for guitars/luggage… I am ready for Vancouver! The question is…is it ready for me?
about 2 hours ago from web

@thedavidcook RT @KaylynnMichelle Don’t you mean,Is Raine Madia ready for me? I know your secret /Glad you do, cause I have no idea what you’re sayin. :)

Heh that chick spelled Raine Maida wrong.

The chart posted earlier had three songs, Heartless was the other one.

DC not only sang Always Be My Baby in concert, he sang it acoustic on the Philippine show, “Eat Bulaga,” with Neal along for the ride.

  116. The chart posted earlier had three songs, Heartless was the other one.

Oops. That’s what I get for not reading back. Thanks. He might be able to get away with playing two out of three, then, especially if he throws another idol song in there. Maybe Ain’t No Sunshine.

  117. The 50,000 tickets that were available were sold out, but there were even more in attendance who watched from behind those 50,000. Estimates of actual numbers vary.

Cook once mentioned a figure of 115,000 in an interview once, which would mean that another 65,000 watched further back. The promoters set up screens not just up front but also further back so that people who showed up but didn’t buy tickets could still watch.

  118. Michael orland has his facebook status as this:

First official meeting today with the boss. Let Season 9 NOW begin. Everyone tune in next tuesday and wednesday nights.

and some guy named jayson belt commented on it saying:

we’re working with springsteen this year????

I googled him, and it does seem legit that this guy works for Idol as well………….

  119. My guess is that was a joke in response to Orland saying he just met with “the boss”. I would be shocked if Springsteen appeared on idol.

  120. oh great…another opportunity for fan wars.

    MTVAsia

Adam Lambert http://bit.ly/mtvlambert or Kris Allen http://bit.ly/mtvallen ? 9 minutes ago from web

(both Adam and Kris are featured artist of the month on MTVAsia)

Ugh. I’ve read sometimes here that people wonder if Danny should feel slighted for not being in things like that Kris-Adam-Allison concert Ryan’s station was sponsoring. It just seems weird to me that the finalists are treated as if they are glued together or in tight competition with each other even after the show has been over for more than six (seven?) months now. Doesn’t seem to serve their individual interests very well.

Glad for Danny he is off on his own in a totally different world where that really doesn’t happen much. Whatever success or challenges he faces, they aren’t from people trying to rerun the AI competition or treat the performers as if they are a clump rather than individuals.

  121. Multiple sources are telling us that Adam Lambert has just won Z100’s Best New Artist award. His competition was Ke$ha, Kris Allen, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. Congratulations Adam!

I do admit that following Idol provides lots of laughs so I hope the spamming of polls never stops. But that result is just silly. I mean Gaga and now Ke$ha actually had #1 songs on Z100.

  122. @thedavidcook taking a writing break, so I thought I’d tell you I’m writing…

  123. @thedavidcook taking a writing break, so I thought I’d tell you I’m writing…

Didn’t he just land today? I would just be pooped after that. I wonder what time zone he left from. Because here in the Eastern time zone (where Vancouver is, I think) it’s almost 11 at night.

  124. seriously

Vancouver is in the Pacific Time Zone and it is only 8:00pm here :)
Good weather for next 3 days too! Wonder if David packed shorts… lol

  125. I’m figuring he left from West coast since he had to have still been in Cali yesterday when he tweeted about golfing with Andy and Joey. I dont know how long the flight was but I would have been exhausted alone from the long time in customs he mentioned earlier.

I couldnt tell if he was being snarky or what with the re-tweet before. When he was with Claude Kelly and Sam Hollander he specifically mentioned them in his tweets hmm.

  126. L.A. to Vancouver isn’t a real long trip — Vancouver is just north of Seattle across the Canadian border, so it’s about a 2 1/2-3 hour flight

  127. I do admit that following Idol provides lots of laughs so I hope the spamming of polls never stops. But that result is just silly. I mean Gaga and now Ke$ha actually had #1 songs on Z100.

And yet a DJ of Z100 got bombarded by Justin Bieber’s fans.

@z100MoBounce: People are accusing me of fixing our Z awards… all I did was Re-Tweet @adamlambert tweet. Ppl need to chill… DAYUM! this is hilarious!

  128. Dang that was embarassing. Is it possible to mix up Vancouver with Quebec? I apologize to the citizens of Vancouver for that error.

  129. Here is a twitter exchange between Dave and JS. I’m sure some of you remember his awesome concert footage at some of Dave’s shows.

john_socal: # @thedavidcook curious why you have to go to vancouver to write when you have @nealfingtiemann in your pad in LA. about 1 hour ago from TweetDeck in reply to thedavidcook

thedavidcook: # I hear you @john_socal. I’m also writing with the guys some. Just exploring many avenues. Great songs are everywhere.

  130. A couple of my favorite videos from the Manilla concert (besides the songs) are:

D2 is just the cutest. I heart them. Very sad they never got the chance to see each other’s shows after Manila. There’s always next year though :)

Stumbled upon this pic today of the two D’s and their bands, I think from Manila, so I think it’s relevant to post.

    http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/2577/lfe3fb987209d486eb4e985.jpg

Hehe. Look what Andy and DC are doing– such teases… meanwhile, Archie is adorkable per usual. And Neal is… not smiling, per usual ;)

  131. Stumbled upon this pic today of the two D’s and their bands, I think from Manila, so I think it’s relevant to post.

    hehe How cute.

  132. *facepalm* Oh please. I know Neal is much loved in the fandom but does anyone honestly believe David would be allowed to write with Neal and only Neal? What a silly thing to say to him and how is he supposed to respond? ‘My major label is footing the bill for this album so I can’t do whatever the hell I want and they want me to write with established writers’? Oy!

  133. Dang that was embarassing. Is it possible to mix up Vancouver with Quebec?

    LOL from Quebec!

But that result is just silly. I mean Gaga and now Ke$ha actually had #1 songs on Z100

    ITA, it looks unreal

  134. Those who don’t like the fact of Danny’s “backstory” may want to avoid, but a new song titled “Will Not Say Goodbye” (?) from Danny appearing. He performed it tonight in Florida at his first club performance coming out of the recent holidays. This is almost definitely the song that made the Christian music artist Meredith Andrews cry when she heard Danny recording it in the studio while she was stopping in to visit Mark Bright.

Danny’s voice is a little rough in one or two places in this. He said, due to a lot of rehearsing today (Monday) after getting back on the road from his nearly two week vacation in Milwaukee. Probably true. Could also be the emotion caught up with him though.

Saw someone comparing this to David Cook’s “Permanent” — can understand why. Beautiful song.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhA331RcGRg

  135. I am glad that David Cook is exploring other avenues. Not a fan of MWK stuff.

  136. According to this, Kris is playing at B.B. King’s Blues Club in Vegas again this week. (Friday, Jan. 8)

    http://www.bbkingclubs.com/index.php?page=lvevents&view=2010-01-08

Which is a great gig — he obviously went over well when he played there last week.

But what is a little odd is that Jan. 8 is the SAME day that there is this premiere party for Katy’s webseries, The Bloodstone Diaries, in Little Rock. I would have thought Kris would go to this to support his wife…unless Katy doesn’t care if he there’s or they thought him being there would detract from her moment in the spotlight or something.

EDIT: I called the club. Kris is definitely booked to play there this Friday! I’m excited. Maybe I’ll hop over to Vegas to see this show.

  137. thanks girlygirl…. wow Kris at B.B King again next week!! nice! and it will be at 9:00 instead of midnight like last time.

I agree with you, it’s better that Katie gets the spotlight for her premiere! Well done for her btw

  138. EDIT: I called the club. Kris is definitely booked to play there this Friday! I’m excited. Maybe I’ll hop over to Vegas to see this show.

Yay!!! Oh girlygirl, please go and bring back a report!!! Pictures, videos!!! I agree, Katy will be fine w/o Kris by her side, or even to overshadow her.

I believe they are a strong couple and they both just have the continuation/building of their careers to consider at this point in their lives, sans kids. :D

  139. Enigmas do not smile ;)

They only laugh. DC’s b-day picture anyone? :D

  140. Matt Giraud posted some news on the band he has been working with!

Just did a rehearsal with my band. They really give my music a sound. It’s get me pumped for the upcoming shows. Check em out @sweetjaponic about 2 hours ago from Echofon

This is an existing band whose vocalist is moving on to other projects, and apparently Matt has played with them in the past. Matt had earlier said that he would have a band at his Jan. 29 show in Grand Rapids. Interestingly, Matt mentions “shows” and the band website mentions an appearance in January with Matt in Scottsdale, AZ. Maybe a tour is in the works?

  141. I like Neal, but I’m glad that Cook doesn’t think he has to write all of his songs with him. I wonder if fans tweet Neal saying that he should write all of his MWK songs with Cook.

  142. Yeah for Kris they must really love him. And am sure Katy well be just find without Kris there. And great for Matt, hopefully sometime this year he’ll get signed he deserves it.

  143. Is this new?
    https://www.oprah.com/plugform.jsp?plugId=3386476&referer=http://www.oprah.com/audience

    Calling ALL Adam Lambert Fans!!!
Are you Adam Lambert’s BIGGEST fan? Did you watch American Idol JUST to hear him sing? Did you vote for him as many times as you could? Were you holding your breath when the new American Idol was announced, hoping and praying it would be HIM? Have you tuned into all of his performances since then? Do you know every word to every song on his album?

    http://www.oprah.com/audience
…(scroll all the way at the bottom)

I don’t think so. I mean, LLWD did reach number one on at least one of the big stations here. Suffice to say, here in the Philippines, Kris Allen = LLWD. I just wish he’d do one of his ballads because those would totally resonate well with the Filipino audience.
