‘Idol’ Taylor Hicks, singing today’s national anthem at Talladega, counts himself a true NASCAR fan – TALLADEGA, Alabama – Taylor Hicks still fondly remembers that one of his first shows took place in the infield of Talladega. Today, the “American Idol” winner is back in his home state to sing the national anthem before the Camping World RV Sales 500. “I never thought in a million years I’d be back performing at Talladega, especially singing the national anthem,” he said. “I’m very blessed and honored to be part of NASCAR and singing here today.” – Read more at AL.com

Harry Connick Jr. talks about ‘American Idol’ role, new albums – “I always liked ‘Idol.’ I’ve been a fan since the first year,” says Connick, who has appeared as a mentor on the show. “I got to know the people there, and I understand the show. They called and asked if I wanted to be a judge. Some things had to be worked out, but they worked out great and I’m having a great time. “The only hesitation was that I had other things going on, and it was a matter of could I do it. Video: USO honors country music star Kellie Pickler in Raleigh – Country music star Kellie Pickler, an Albemarle native, received the Warrior Award from the USO of North Carolina at Saturday night’s 9th Annual Salute to Freedom Gala in Raleigh. Pickler went on her first USO tour in 2007. Since then, she has lifted the spirits of more than 30,000 troops stationed in eight different countries, according to WTVD, a sponsor of Saturday’s event. “I come from a military family. I’ve always had a great deal of respect for our service men and women,” Pickler said. “I work a lot with the USO, I love working with them.
