‘American Idol’ Alum Jax Tees Up Debut EP, Releases ‘Cathartic’ New Single – Co-written with Nash Overstreet (Britney Spears, Meghan Trainor), “Stars” addresses the East Brunswick, NJ singer’s year-long battle with thyroid cancer. She was diagnosed earlier this April with Hashimoto’s Disease, and underwent surgery to remove her thyroid. Writing “Stars,” Zax said, was therapeutic: “I was in a dark place and it was really cathartic for me to be writing. I feel like ‘Stars’ was a turning point in the writing process for everyone.
