HDD – Album Sales Prediction : Sep 9-15

With 71.35% of reports in, American Idol Judge Keith Urban looks set to have the number one album and number one debut of the week. This would be the Country artists second number one album. Although he appears far out in front right now, the weekend predictions had Weeknd nipping at Keith’s heels.

Weeknd (no, I’m not missing an “e” spell-check, these new fangled artists and their funky spellings!) is Canadian and wiki lists him as a PBR&R artist. Eh? (as we Canadians like to say). Now I cannot even recognize the genres. Thankfully, wiki is all hyper-linked and tells me that PBR&R comes from Pabst Blue Ribbon (no, I am not making this up, but somebody may be) and R&B. Apparently, Pabst Blue Ribbon is a hipster brew (seriously? somebody has to be making this up. Hipsters drink crappy beer? How is that hip? What happened to micro-breweries? Or is that just now for old people who thought it was hip back ten years ago? Clearly, I’m not hip) and this is a hipster R&B style. Anyway, dude will be second or first.

There are a lot of debuts this week in the top ten. Besides Urban and Weeknd, hip hop 2 Chainz (3rd), R&B (psychedelic soul) artist Janelle Monae (5), indie (psychedelic) rock artists Arctic Monkeys (6) and rock country artist Sheryl Crow (7) are also debuting.

Luke Bryan, who just keeps standing firm at number 4, is the top returning album. Ariana Grande and Tamar Braxton who were 1 and 2 last week are 8 and 9 this week. John Legend rounds out the top 10.

The only reality show singing contestants in the top 50 this week are One Direction. Their previous album has been parked in the mid-30s since “Best Song Ever” was released. Do people think that the new song is on the old album or does the new song just remind them that they meant to pick up the old album or is it just new fans stocking up on the bands existing material? In any event, a hit new song can impact older albums.
