HDD – Album Sales Prediction : Sep 22-28

With 70.38% of reports in (that’s the biggest first day percentage I’ve seen in a while), Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga have taken the lead in a three way battle for number one album of the week. Earlier in the week, pundits were predicting that Kenny Chesney would have the lead for his 8th number one album, but aggressive pricing by both parties has tilted the balance. Last week’s number one, Barbara Streisand is also in the hunt with a strong hold-over from the week before (which many thought would not exist since legacy acts tend to have steep second week drops and the album had aggressive pricing during its debut week). At least we are likely to get a week with three albums north of 100K (and as HDD points out, the Berlin estate will see some nice residuals as Irving becomes one of the hottest songwriters of late).Alt-J is an indie-rock band out of Leeds and “This is all Yours” is their first album to get real traction in the US (their debut album peaked at 80th on the BB200). They are debuting with their sophomore album in 5th.

Pentatonix is one of the Cinderella stories from the reality singing show genre. They were on the summer “Sing Off” show that had its ardent fans, but was not a big booster of careers. A carefully talented youtube campaign and a lot of talent resulted in Pentatonix becoming a success. “PTX, VOL. III” is their first major label release and it’s debuting in a strong 5th. Jennifer Hudson is the other Cinderella story. To Elton John’s annoyance (imagine if twitter existed back then), she finished 7th on the 3rd season of American Idol. She went to work on the dreaded cruise ships that Simon was famous for disparaging and managed to get cast in a role of Dream Girls. She won an Oscar and became very respected in the music biz. Her latest album is debuting at her lucky number – 7.

Tim Mcgraw is not just a Taylor Swift song, he is also 8th. Voice Judge Adam Levine’s Maroon 5 is 9th and King George (Strait) makes it 3 Country acts in the top 10 at 10th. Chris Brown is 6th.

Jackie Evancho from “America’s Got Talent” is releasing her 6th studio album at the age of 14. What had you accomplished by the time you were 14? She has an upcoming PBS special coming up, so I expect that “Awakenings” will live on for a while.

Now 51 and Now 50 feature X-Factor acts (Cher Lloyd and One Direction) and are at 22 and 44th respectively. Miranda Lambert from Nashville Star has a duet with American Idol’s Carrie Underwood – her album is at 43rd. Her husband and Voice Judge Blake Shelton is right ahead of her at 42nd. Brad Paisley was on some singing show this summer for which I’ve already forgotten the name and he is at 47th.
