HDD – Album Sales Prediction : Feb 2-8

With 74.72% of reports in, hits compilation album Now 53 is topping the chart. Now 53 has a track from One Direction and Now 52 at 28 features the last XF US winners, Alex & Sierra. It’s interesting that Now 53 is outselling the Grammy Nominee CD (at 8th), because the Grammys boosted so many other albums. I suspect that part of it is because Now 53 features CURRENT hits while the Grammys voting schedule is SO LONG that some of those nominated songs have mold growing on them. “Happy” is a track from a movie that was released July 13, 2013 (not a typo). The “Wrecking Ball” meme was dead and buried months ago. Ed and Sam are two singles past the songs featured on the album. Seriously, the movie dudes can award movies that were released a month ago, but the Grammys are celebrating songs that are 1.5 years old. It takes them 5 months from cut-off to awards. The songs are less than 5 minutes long – most albums about an hour. Movies are 1.5-3 hours long. You could listen to all the songs you are allowed to vote for and cast your ballot in a day. Tighten up.

“Let it Go” just one the Grammy for best soundtrack song and its coming up on its year anniversary of winning the Oscar for the same thing. We were already tired of that song a year ago.

In other news, people are finding out who Beck is because he’s popped onto the chart with only a few hours of post-win sales data. Ed is also seeing a boost with both his “Times” and “Plus” album charting. On the download charts, his CURRENT hit is number one. Beyonce also re-enters the chart.

X-Factor US girl group, Fifth Harmony release their debut album and are currently holding down the number three spot behind Taylor Swift. Emblem3 (they would like me to tell you that they are not a boy band) were the most successful act from that franchise prior to this (with an opening frame of 46K), but Fifth Harmony will likely claim top spot. Ed is 4th and his fellow countryman (and winner of a bunch of golden gramaphones) Sam is 5th. Diana Krall has a new Jazz CD out and she’s opening at 6th right in front of legendary Bob Dylan who mumbles his way to 7th (sorry, dude – you are a poet, not a speaker). Meghan Trainor sticks in the top 10 with her Title slipping from 2nd to 9th. Kid Ink representing the rappers opening at 10th.

Other reality singing show competitors appearing on the chart are Carrie Underwood at 29th followed by One Direction at 30th. Judges are represented by the usual suspects, Maroon 5 at 18th and Blake at 48th.
