HDD – Album Sales Prediction : Apr 9-15

When HDD was predicting last week’s top 15, they didn’t count on Lionel Richie being a game changer. He had a special on CBS on Friday night when few people watch television anyway. Well, those shut ins obviously know their way to a record store because the 50-55K that was predicted on Friday have become 125K predictions today. Right now, with 55.46% reporting in, Lionel is topping the chart with about 87K in sales. He’s predicted to top the BB200 for his third time, his first time in the SoundScan era (last time was in 1986 with “Dancing on the Ceiling”). People like Adele give me hope in the industry, but clearly, the buying public is hankering for some country covers of their favourite 80 tunes. We naysayers did not know the brilliance that Nigel has been offering us on Idol all this time.

Next up is a surging Goyte showing us that a hot single can move those units almost as well a CBS special. Nicki moves down to third in her second week and Adele finds herself in the unusual position of being out of the top 3. Rascal Flatts is 5th, Of Monsters & Men are 6th, Counting Crows are currently the highest debut at 7, Alabama Shakes (don’t ask me) is 8th, Hoodie Allen and Monica debut at 9th and 10th respectively.

Lurking right outside the top 10 is UK X-Factor’s 1D at 11. Kelly is our top Idol way down at 40, but she also appears on Jason Aldean’s album at 19. From our first Idol to our last, the only other Idol on our chart this week is Scotty at 45. Voice judge Blake Shelton is at 33 and Whitney Houston only has one album on the chart this week (17th).
