With 46.22% of the chart reporting in, there is not a single solitary contestant from a reality singing show representing. I don’t remember the last time that happened.
But never fear, reality shows are represented. Black Sabbath, featuring Ozzy from the reality show staple family the Osbournes (seriously, how many different shows have they been on?), is set to top the chart with 120-140K. Not bad for a band that has been kicking around since the 60s, has been through more changes than Carrie Underwood hosting the CMAs and are releasing their 19th album. This album has had a rocky start and first got underway back in 2001 with famous producer Rick Rubin. Things went off the rails for a variety of reasons, line-ups changed and the entire project was restarted in 2011. This is the first full studio album with Ozzy leading up Black Sabbath since “Never Say Die” back in 1978. Should we all eat the head off of a bat in celebration? I think not.
Next up is Daft Punk with their RAM, Justin Timberlake pops back up into third and Lonely Island’s “Wack Album” is fourth. Lonely Island is my “Who?” group of the week and much to my surprise, they are not an Indie-Rock Band. It turns out that not only am I deficient in my knowledge of Indie-Rock bands, I’m also clueless on knowing who’s who in the Comedy Hip-Hop genre. Nickelodeon’s Big Time Rush (a show featuring a made-up band) is in 5th, but expected to finish in third. The new Superman Soundtrack is 6th (is it me, or are Soundtracks suddenly doing better? There was a time when soundtracks were big money churners, but for the last while, they haven’t done much other than the odd one here or there. Lately, there seems to be a surge in these albums with ones often appearing in the top 10).
Chrisette Michele (7th), Goo Goo Dolls (8th), Florida Georgia Line (9th) and Jimmy Eat World (10th) round out the top 10.
Reality singers do appear on the Now 46 album (Olly and One D) which is at 21st.
