Glee News: NBC Pulls Cast From Thanksgiving Parade, Tour In Planning Stages

A couple of Glee items for you:

Enteratainment Weekly has confirmed the Glee cast was pulled from the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade by NBC.

The parade organizers initially invited the cast, only to have NBC pull the plug later.   A couple of updates from EW:

Macy’s spokesperson Orlando Veras sent EW.com this statement: ‘As with any live event, the talent booking process is a fluid one subject to frequent updates or changes. Due to this fact, we don’t confirm talent appearances for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade until early November when the final line-up is determined.’

Another source close to the event confirmed to EW.com that while the parade has featured talent from other networks ‘” American Idol singers, High School Musical actors ‘” there was concern that featuring the entire cast of a rival’s show amounted to outright promotion.

With NBC’s ratings in the crapper, no wonder they’re bitchy!

Here’s some happier news, also from EW, the Glee kids may be hitting the road!

EW has learned that a Glee music tour is in the early discussion stage. It’s not surprising given that the series’ music has been exploding on iTunes and the first Glee soundtrack drops on Nov. 3. Back in July, Fox Broadcasting president Kevin Reilly hinted at the development to EW. ‘We’ve had a tremendous amount of enthusiasm from our music partners, ‘ said Reilly. ‘ Certainly if these kids become stars in their own right, who knows? Live appearances. Albums. There’s lots of things that could happen.’ While nothing is 100% confirmed yet, co-creator Ryan Murphy tells EW that the tour would most likely be scheduled around spring 2010, once shooting of the first season has ended.

I can’t tell a lie, I’d go see that!

I won’t try and delude myself either – I’d totally buy a ticket.

  2. I don’t get why anyone wants to listen to what amounts to nothing more than an Idol group performance on a regular basis on their ipod?

I haven’t downloaded any of the music. I’m with you there. But I can watch the video performances over and over again. And I will totally buy a ticket to see the kids perform live.

  4. Downloader checking in – I bought most of their songs on Itunes and I love them! I would totally go see them live – just for Lea Michele – the rest are icing!

  5. I honestly haven’t been able to get into the show itself much, but I really like the musical performances. I bought the “Halo”/”Walking On Sunshine” mashup because I think it’s cool, and it makes me smile!

If High School Musical could go on tour, I don’t see why the Glee kids couldn’t!

I haven’t purchased any of the music either. But, I think there’s a lot of talent with the Glee group. So, I just believe a live show would be tremendous fun.

  7. I haven’t downloaded any of the music.

I was somewhat tempted to get the boys’ mashup just because it was different and sounded so cool, but Finn’s solo… fun to watch, but yeah, his voice is not good haha.

Me too. For my ipod, I’d much rather listen to the original artists. But these kids are fun and I’d totally go to see them perform.

  9. I still can’t believe Amber Riley wasn’t even aloud to go in front of the judges on Idol

  10. I don’t get why anyone wants to listen to what amounts to nothing more than an Idol group performance on a regular basis on their ipod?

Is this merely a rhetorical question or are you intentionally dissing the musical tastes of others here? In any case, the saying “different strokes…” comes to mind. Plus the fact this group of performers is far superior to the usual Idol ensembles.

I’m not entirely sure at this point, but I think I’m inclined to believe that the actor playing Finn does have the weakest voice in the group. But, I think he does such a great job with the character, so I still kind of love him anyway :)

  12. Remusl- didn’t think I was dissing. You are right- different strokes I guess, but I don’t really think you can say it’s a fact that they are better either. I just meant most of us here usually groan at the high school musical type performances on idol. This just seems the same to me. I really don’t get why people would download this to their ipods at the rate they are doing it.

  13. I think that pulled is an overstatement of what happened. NBC did not approve of featuring a Fox TV show in the parade that they pay a lot for.

I don’t blame them, and the folks from Macy’s and Fox/Glee should have expected it would be a problem.

  14. I don’t get why anyone wants to listen to what amounts to nothing more than an Idol group performance on a regular basis on their ipod?

[Small voice] I actually have some Idol group performances on my iPod. Some of them are just such cheesy goodness and bring back fond memories. I also bought a couple of the duets from the last Idol Finale.

Haha! So, I can’t judge people who buy the Gleek songs on iTunes. If they sold the videos, I might be a lost cause with that as well.

In fact, I’m in awe of how good a job they do with their “group” songs on this show. Way better song choices and staging ideas. And since the premise of the show is that some of these characters are bad dancers, I think that AI choreographers should be watching this show and take notes.

Meanwhile, all AI staffers should be taking notes on how to Slushee somebody because I’m hoping that I can live through them vicariously when they Slushee Bruce. I have my bets on Ryan going mad after another bungled shot, grabbing Simon’s Coke cup and running into the control room to do it.

Disclaimer: I do not condone Slushing of anybody in real life. LOL

And, you will be extremely satisfied if the person Ryan decides to Slushee is your BFF Bruce, right? :)

    You know me too well.

  17. I just meant most of us here usually groan at the high school musical type performances on idol.

Well, I, for one, LOVE the group performances on AI, and I know others who do, too. They’re basically the highlights of the results shows, for me. IMO, the difference with the Glee tracks is that it’s not just a video or audio taken straight from a show. These songs are actually pretty well produced and are full songs – typically longer than what’s done during the episode.

Besides, I bought a couple of AI group number videos last season, and I’ve bought a lot of the Glee stuff too. I also have stuff as varied as Rufus Wainwright, Katy Perry, Garth Brooks, No Doubt, John Legend, and My Chemical Romance on my iPod, not to mention my fair share of albums from AI alums, and a selection of movie soundtracks and original cast recordings of Broadway musicals. My general theory is that if I like the music and I like the way the person sings it, I buy it. Why should covers by the Glee kids, or for that matter, covers by the AI contestants (not just the group numbers) during the season, be any different?

  18. I wonder if there is any chance Kris or Adam might be in the parade. I will totally wake my butt up at 4 a.m. for a trek to the city, if it was true. Lucky for my turkey. lol.

  19. Seriously, folks, the Amber Riley itunes version of Bust Your Windows is getting serious airtime in my house. Much better than the original artist’s version . . .

  20. Well, I, for one, LOVE the group performances on AI, and I know others who do, too.

I have Seasons 4 and 5 AI Group Performnaces on a CD recorded separately from the actual CDs I bought. I think there are a few really good performances from Glee but I am not sure if I’d pay to see them perfrom.

Visually, the boys group number last week was awesome.

  21. Visually, the boys group number last week was awesome.

Yep. Will, stick it in your ear. Let’s see more of what Mike Chang can do.

  22. *Someone* around here bought that Halo/Walking on Sunshine mashup and has been playing it a bunch and flailing like a muppet! I totally scorn that person, though!

  23. I’ve bought a few of the iTunes songs, too, and I love them. These, for the most part, were pop tunes that never got my attention until they got the “Glee treatment.” My 12-year-old son, who hasn’t watched the show yet, loves a lot of them too. He must have played Lea Michelle’s version of “Take a Bow” 50 times in one day on his iPod–and this is a kid who listens almost exclusively to up-tempo stuff. Lea’s a terrific singer, I think. I loved her take on that song and the Celine one, which I’d never cared for before either. And “Golddigger” is just too much fun. I’ve listened to that way more than I’d care to admit to.

I actually heard a story on American Public Radio’s “Marketplace” this morning about Glee because the show’s iTunes sales have had such a big impact. Too bad they never release the final sales figures for American Idol after the seasons end; I think a lot of folks would be shocked how well a lot of those songs have sold.

Here’s the link to the “Marketplace” story if anybody wants to listen: ‘Glee’ gives glee to digital-music outlets
