DWTS 28 Girl/Boy Bands Week 9 Recap: Live Blog Results (Videos)

Hey All :)
Welcome to week nine of season twenty-eight of Dancing with the Stars. Tonight, we pay tribute to girl groups and boy bands as the remaining pairs dance twice to songs made famous by such groups as The Supremes, The Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, and The Jonas Brothers. Joey Fatone, who previously competed on this show will be on hand to guest judge. Emma Bunton was originally scheduled to join him but couldn’t make it due to scheduling conflicts.

This is the final night for the contestants to impress the judges and America before next week’s semi-finals. After twelve routines, the live coat to coast vote will help determine who is in the bottom two and then the judges will decide who exits in sixth place. After three consecutive weeks of questionable eliminations, are we in for another shock tonight?

If you want to get in on the voting action, you can of course do so right at the start of the program. And voting is super easy this season.
-You can head on over to ABC.COM or use the ABC App. A valid email is required and a limit of 10 votes per method.
-You can text the name of your choice to 21523. Example- text the word Lauren to 21523 to place a vote for Lauren. Again, a limit of 10 votes for this method.

We begin with our pros, who are out to perform to some fun girl group and boy band tunes. Even the celebs get to join in on the fun. LOL @Joey Fatone joining in. There’s a reason he was never exactly the dancer of the group and not much has changed. But everyone seems to be having a blast. That routine was choreographed by Brooke Wendle and Rodrigo Basurto.

Girl Group Round Is First…

James & Emma – Jive

Really strong jive to start us out. Some great kicks and flicks and totally in time with Emma as well. I loved the choreography here- simple enough jive content to please Len but some eye catching tricks as well to please the audience. Good way to begin the show.

Len says learning two dances is tough. He enjoyed the speed and kicks and flicks. He tells James he was good. Joey tells James he is effortless. Bruno gives him a note that it could have had more of a pump on the downbeat. Carrie Ann says he found the rhythm in the song as it progressed.

Sean & Jenna – Argentine Tango
I can’t knock this routine too hard. It was simple and very basic but Jenna did that on purpose and Sean did what he was asked to do. Sure, it was a notch (or two or three) below those fabulous argentine tangos we are used to seeing but it also could have been way worse. Yes, I know. This is week nine and grading on a curve is horrendous but here we are and it is what it is.

Joey says he gives it a hundred and ten perfect. He tells him the feet are the problem. Bruno agrees that he tries very hard. He praises him for managing to get to the end. Carrie Ann appreciates the effort. She tells him the artistry is missing. Len says the best thing is it wasn’t very long. Too much walking about, Len notes.

Hannah & Alan – Salsa
A tad on the frenetic side. Not as good as Hannah was last week and surprisingly (and this is on Alan), a bit sloppy with one of the lifts. But on a whole, a fun routine that is very much in the style of salsa when lots of hip action and bounce. I just wish they calmed down a bit throughout.

Bruno loves the confidence. He tells her the timing went off but he loved the turns. Carrie Ann loves the attitude but feels the lifts were out of sorts. Len says it got ahead of the music but had lots of rhythm. Joey tells her to keep the practicing but overall fantastic.

Ally & Sasha – Samba
Very good and very fun. First, I adore the outfit they have Ally in. She looks amazing. Second, a very get on your feet and dance along samba with some lovely hip action and bounce. You can tell Ally has improved a whole lot in her Latin dances from just a couple of weeks ago. She is much more present and aware of things on the dance floor and depends less on Sasha leading her around.

Carrie Ann loves the way they dance together. She calls her flawless. Len loved the recognizable stuff and calls it a fantastic dance. Joey wanted to see a samba roll but tells Ally she did amazing. Bruno wants more. He calls it a technically absolutely right samba.

Lauren & Gleb – Quickstep
Good job Lauren. No mess up like last week. She was in control of all of that. A really solid quickstep, moving and flowing all around the ballroom and keeping her posture and hold very solid as well. She should be proud of that as I’m sure she was a bundle of nerves after last week’s dance.

Len loved some of the stuff Gleb put in. He said one or two moments in that weren’t spot on but he liked it. Joey agrees with Len about the little things but all in all, he felt the energy was great. Bruno loved that they captured the joy of the dance. He says it was complex and the precision lacked. Carrie Ann disagrees and thought it was fantastic.

Kel & Witney – Paso Doble
Hmm. I’m not so sure on that one. It was very ambitious of Witney in terms of choreography and I’m not sure it completely paid off. I saw some good paso moves, though Kel’s posture at the beginning was very odd. But a little too much mixed in for such a short dance. But hey, this could be a personal preference and others might have just loved that.

Joey tells him he did an awesome job minus a little issue with the knees. Bruno loved the power of the performance. He tells him do not close the lines and tighten up. Carrie Ann calls it small- she wants him to dance big. Len notes it had too many gimmicks and not enough paso.

Boy Band Round

James & Emma – Jazz
HA. That was a blast. A great tribute while still showing off something new. I actually believe James isn’t totally comfortable in a jazz dance and prefers the stricter more technical ballroom dances but he still had a blast and it showed. I loved the choreography here. Emma made sure to show him off proper and she kind of took a back seat throughout.

Len wanted more together dancing and found it to be too aggressive. Joey calls it amazing and says hands down awesome. Bruno agrees the couple could have been together more but in this context, he understands. Carrie Ann says James gives three hundred percent but tells him to watch his elbows. Yep, elbows.

Hannah & Alan – Tango
That was a lot of time given to Hannah’s meltdown in the rehearsal package for the dance to be….great? I mean, seriously. There was nothing wrong at all in that. Good posture, good steps, nice head placement throughout. Better than her round one dance and shades of confident Hannah from last week. I could have done without them making her look like she was losing it in rehearsal.

Joey calls it the best dance of the night. Bruno calls it pleasure. He compliments the passion and elegance. Carrie Ann thanks her for bringing back her A-game. Len feels she got a little loose on occasion but he says well done.

Sean & Jenna – Foxtrot
Just a whole lot of walking around with Jenna leading. You can see her talking to him (loudly) and trying to make sure he doesn’t go wrong. Eh, not terrible but nothing to rave about either. If you are a fan of Sean, you probably thought this was adequate and pleasant. If you aren’t, you thought it was about the same as every other week of this competition since it started.

Bruno calls him solid and consistent- going in the wrong direction. He tells him there was no fluidity in the dance. Carrie Ann tells him he lost his step in the middle. She loves that he keeps trying. Len says it flowed then dripped and flowed again and somewhere in the middle…stopped. Joey compliments Sean that he takes a beating and keeps going.

Lauren & Gleb – Rumba
Sweet and romantic rumba. Enjoyed the hip movement and saw plenty of it. My only critique is that sometimes Lauren has a deer in the heed lights look on her face, as though she is trying so hard to remember the steps and be in character that she’s a nervous wreck. She just needs to believe in herself and let it go. But this was a very nice rumba and a solid job for both dances tonight.

Carrie Ann is amazed by her growth. She loves the confidence and sensuality. She tells her to breathe so she doesn’t look so stiff. Len liked it very much. Joey did not like the song (haha). He says the dancing was amazing. Bruno says Lauren delivered a hot rumba.

Kel & Witney – Viennese Waltz
I’m not sure what happened at the beginning- a little missed hand moment but after that, it was aces. It seems like the dances are getting shorter as we go forward tonight. Not much to critique here, which is actually a good thing. It was lovely and elegant with some nice rise and fall and decent posture. I worry when Kel has to do a slow dance because his history with them is not so great but he pulled this off well.

Len thought it was terrific. He calls it a polished performance. Joey compliments him on doing a slow dance. Bruno tells Kel that he dances like a perfect gentleman. Carrie Ann is in agreement and loved the arms this time around.

Ally & Sasha – Jazz
Way too many dancers on the floor for that. Take one or two away. But like James, a fun jazz piece paying tribute to the song while adding something fresh. Ally has had a strong night overall, which should make these upcoming results very interesting to say the least. For my money, she has earned herself a spot in next week’s seni-finals but if you know who isn’t in the bottom, I don’t know who I would sacrifice to keep her. Ugh.

Joey loved the energy and the storytelling. Bruno calls it pure pop delight. He compares her to Paula Abdul. Carrie Ann calls her flawless again and thinks it was like a freestyle in the finale. Len loves Ally’s bubbly personality. Carrie Ann- 10

Carrie Ann SAVES Lauren & Gleb
Bruno SAVES Lauren Gleb

Eliminated- Sean & Jenna

Well, it only took nine weeks but the right person finally got the boot. Sean gives his thanks to everyone with a classy exit but let’s be real, this should have happened weeks ago. We lost way too many people along the way before the hammer finally fell.

Next week- it is the semi-finals. CHER will be on hand and everyone will dance twice yet again. POLLS coming soon. Thanks for watching the fun with me tonight and I’ll see you next week. :D
