She’s Not You

David Cook – “This Year” (David Hodges co-write from 2008)

This Year

I agree with commenters, that both songs sound like old material and aren’t candidates for the new records both are working on.

Cook and Archie have both been busy writing new songs and are expected to release new albums later this year.

thanks frogcooke

  1. oh btw someone told me ‘This Year’ was one of the leaked demo snippets from awhile ago.

Btw i rather like both songs. haha

VV Yeh Archie’s sounds very demoish as well, and wouldnt be surprised at all if it is indeed a left over demo from the last era as well.

  2. This Year is a Hodges co-write from 2008. We heard a snippet of it when Cherry Lane accidentally made available all of David’s demos of unreleased songs. David was non too happy about it then.

He did promise surprises today but it seems odd that the songs were not released in a more official fashion.

This is a demo and David is pretty exacting in his standards I don’t know if this is what he meant by a surprise.

  3. Both guys sound great. Curious to see if these end up on the albums.

  4. ^^ well considering cooks is a left over demo I doubt it. Also with a full song leaking, i doubt these would make it to the album anyway.

I think Jordin recently had a left over song from the first album leak right before her second album.

  5. It’s a nice song and I love Cook’s voice but it doesn’t really sound like the new direction he has been speaking about in like every single interview about his new album. I.E. Loud, Piano (well there is some piano in this song) Dynamics, Musically Urgent, Salty lyrics.

I also think he has covered this theme of broken relationships in better songs both released and unreleased like Lie and We’re Only Honest.

Although there are some really nice lyrics and word pictures that he creates in the song.

“this empty space is a vacuum, filled with yesterdays” “Falling all around a feeling that we locked away” We were lost a long, long time ago, to reasons we may never know”

  6. This is a demo and David is pretty exacting in his standards I don’t know if this is what he meant by a surprise.

Yeah, he seemed pretty annoyed when the SNIPPETS from Cherry Lane were found and fans started tweeting him about them. He was like, they’re demos and not finished, etc. etc. I’m pretty sure he didn’t want this to be leaked, but this kinda stuff happens.

I doubt a 2008 leftover will make this album though. That’s fine– it’s decent but not amazing melodically or lyrically… I think I’d like the new album to have different sounds and even more Cook’ian lyrics. Wonder how that Brazilian site got their hands on these songs. I wonder if it’s getting used for something, like that One Second to Change Your Life song for ESPN…

Archie’s song sounds pretty good though. I can hear something like that on the radio– in fact it’s better than similar songs on the radio. As usual Archie elevates the entire genre with his vocals.

  7. Lisa, the mod at DCO:

In answer 2DM’s ‘This Year’ NOT new song; was recorded as demo 4 last album; co-written by @thedavidcook @hodgesmusic & @jesscatesmusic 15 minutes ago via TweetDeck

  8. That’s a no on both songs for me, neither is memorable or interesting.

  9. I think the Archie song also sounds like a cut-track from the last album, like the Cook song. It doesn’t really match up with what he’s been saying about the new material – more of “his story” and “his personality” in the lyrics and writing. Trying to kiss a girl at her doorstep…not exactly “him” HA.

His voice sounds great on it though, and I love the acoustic vibe.

Excited that the full-length version of one of Cook’s snippets leaked, too. Even if it’s not for the new album, I still love it.

I NEED THESE NEW ALBUMS LIKE YESTERDAY.

  10. oh thats interesting lol both Cates songs. haha

“I NEED THESE NEW ALBUMS LIKE YESTERDAY.”

    me too!

  11. I think the Archie song also sounds like a cut-track from the last album, like the Cook song. It doesn’t really match up with what he’s been saying about the new material – more of “his story” and “his personality” in the lyrics and writing. Trying to kiss a girl at her doorstep…not exactly “him” HA.

also about this, what we know for album two is that pretty much all the songs have been either written with david or for david specifically. Again at least that we know of, and like you said this doesnt sound like it was specifically written for him.

  12. Ok first let me just say that IMHO neither of these guys can ever sing a song bad. That is even for songs that are not great songs but both of these guys can make them sound decent. I like David A song better as a song. I want to hear Archie sing a more upbeat fun song though in the future. David Cooks song “This Year” doesn’t sound current enough as a song and I don’t think is a representation of his best. That’s just me. He has given such excellence I guess I expect more from him. But of course I have downloaded both songs to play repeatedly on my Iphone. Don’t judge I am desperate for new music from both of them.

  13. I also think he has covered this theme of broken relationships in better songs both released and unreleased like Lie and We’re Only Honest.

Word. I also think the dude has a thing for reflecting on relationships while looking at the ceiling. Am I wrong, or does he sing some variation of the “counting cracks in the ceiling” lyric in like 3 songs or something? I dunno man, I think maybe it’s time to stop dealing with breakups by moping around in bed and writing bitter breakup songs. Hee.

  14. lol i have them both on my itunes, i just want new music haha. I’ll take what I can get, even left over demos.

  15. I’ll take a new Cookie song. It’s pretty good, and it’s Cookie. So I’m cool with it. Listening to the Archie song now…

  16. Well, it’s a new Cook song and I’m happy enough about that, but I’m also happy that it’s an old song cut from the last album, rather than a new one, for two reasons:

    1) It’s not the direction I’d hoped the new album would take – too smooth and easy listening in the sound (lyrics seem fine from the snippet I heard, but I’ll have to listen to it all to see); and

    2) It shows that the songs that were chosen for DCTR went for a more indie/mainstream mix vibe than could possibly have been the case and I have to assume that that was the Cook influence.

A nice addition to my Cook song stockpile, nevertheless… :lol

  17. I like them. I find David A’s to be pretty catchy. And I like that it’s not overly-crapped up with layers and effects. It would be cute on stage too – he could point at lots of audience girls. Haha. But yeah, new or old I am thrilled to hear something! And Monday we get to hear Somos el Mundo. And we got the memoir cover! Awesome few days.

  18. lol i have them both on my itunes, i just want new music haha. I’ll take what I can get, even left over demos.

Me too! Don’t care if they are old demos, last years stuff, it’s still new to me. They both sound great.

  19. the David A song definitely seems like a demo for the first album. The first four songs on that album have a clap sound on beats 2 and 4, just like this song.

I wonder why they were leaked now? Jesse Cates seems to be the common writer.

  20. geez, just love david archuleta’s new leaked song….love the beat, love the vocals….over all winner to me…..!!!!IMO!

thanks mj for the link.with all these heartbreaking news, earthquake, tsunami and suicide event, i need to listen to “the voice”….thank goodness for david archuleta!

  21. I also like the r&b vibe that archie’s song has. Definitely think he should lean a bit r&b with some of his songs.

  22. How weird that they were leaked the same time. Not crazy about either one yet I put them both on my ipod haha. NEW MUSIC PLZ!!!

But gah I so hope we get a preview of a new song tonight! Preferably something that he worked on with Claude Kelly since those are the songs I’m most intrigued by.

  23. Oddly, I liked the David A song better than the Cookie song. Not what I would have thought would happen, given I am not a fan of the songs I’ve heard Archie do. But I thought it was pretty radio friendly for today, and wasn’t as overproduced as about everything else I’ve heard from his albums(which isn’t his fault). Still had that going on, but not as much. I could see it doing well enough on radio, and for what it was, I thought it was fine. Certainly an improvement over his previous singles.

I really didn’t like that Cookie song. Sooo generic, and just so done by him and others, and done better by him, and others. Glad to hear it’s an older song, that didn’t make the cut from the his DCTR, right? Well good choice on that.

  24. Anyway, yeah, I would recommend for both of them to leave material like these tracks behind them

I doubt that’s an issue for DC, Noctem. On September 15th, 2009, when the snippets were first found and posted about, David was asked about them in an interview for the York Fair concert.

David said they “weren’t meant for public consumption.” “Those songs are all kind of real rough demos, songs that may never see the light of day.”

“Some of them were songs from before Idol. Some of them were songs that didn’t make the cut for the record. Sort of a hodgepodge of a lot of things.”

    dispatch/blogzone/src/lyceum/chatter/2009/09/15

That one is a demo from the 2008 songwriting sessions with David Hodges and Jess Cates during the Idol Tour. “My Last Request” – the iTunes bonus song, was the one chosen to use from those co-writers instead.

I have no idea why a two year old unused rough demo was leaked…but it has nothing to do with what’s being written now. David has already said he’s not going for the “wall of sound” with the guitars this time.

  25. omg!can’t get enough of the song “she’s not you”…it’s your fault david archuleta lol!!!!i’m loving it!!!!! woot!

  26. LOL, based on your headline, MJ, I thought it was a leaked duet. Maybe it should read “David Cook and David Archuleta Song-Leaks!”?

Both Davids sound great, and the tunes are catchy even if the lyrics on both songs are pretty wretched. Not surprised neither was ever released.

(And thanks for the mp3s, MJ! I’d gladly listen to dreck lyrics to hear anything new from either of them.)

  27. Maybe I’m just brainwashed by my love for Cook(although I never really warmed up to Make Believe and Souvenir), but I really, really like this new/old song. It’s definitely more HAC than I hope the new record will be, but still…I’m enjoying the heck out of it. More leaks to tide me over until DCTR2 would be greatly appreciated. :)

  28. The first line of David C’s song reminded me of a line in the film Penny Serenade when Irene Dunne says to Cary Grant ” You’ve been miles away from me, right here in this room. ”
I think This Year kind of sounds like it would make a catchy country song. Nice to hear anything new from both of them but I hope they are going to remain demos.

Am I wrong, or does he sing some variation of the “counting cracks in the ceiling” lyric in like 3 songs or something?

I think you’re right, but this time he left out “finding his sense of disregard.” ( love you, cookie! )

  29. ;) I can be just as greedy, and I know it, and the demo is a nice snack. But we were promised surprises tonight on David’s Twitter page, and in a great iguide Music interview for the show tonight, there’s this sentence –

“Cook fans at Morongo Casino Resort and Spa in Cabazon on Saturday will be test subjects for at least one of the songs Cook has been working on for the new album.”

And that will be a fresh, new song! Feels like a long time to showtime, KWIM?

  30. I think you’re right, but this time he left out “finding his sense of disregard.” ( love you, cookie! )

Speaking of lyrics, any Cook fans transcribe the lyrics to this song yet? I can’t quite figure all of it out. Yeah, so I’m not the biggest fan of this song, but I still wanna dissect it =P.

  31. Okay, so this is what I want to know…

    1) Do we know the identity of the covert ops agent who recovered these hidden demos?

    and

    2) How do I hire them to Mission Impossible me some more goodies, like the much lamented long lost Cookwood Van Halen duet, or my personal Holy Grail, the Neal produced magical mystery Cookie album that begat my two favoritest songs? Huh?

LOL, based on your headline, MJ, I thought it was a leaked duet.

New Archucook? That would have been epic in an eat your heart out Kradison kind of way, LOL.

Seriously, though, did this all come from the same source, cuz I thought Cherry Lane put all the Cook demos under lock and key. Curiouser and curiouser. As for the two tunes, they both aight for me, dawg. Now, if you wanna talk Cookie ceiling staring lyrics, I’m gonna throw down for “The ceiling paints a picture and everything’s a welcome work of art, admist the chaos in the mirror, the lies in lipstick red…” Honest= <3

  32. speaking of lyrics heres Archie’s:

David Archuleta – She’s Not You Lyrics

    Oh yeaaaah… oh

    [Verse 1]

See how she’s looking in my eyes **any guy would kill for that
She’s a beautiful girl and she’s into me but I’m too busy still lookin back
Now I’m walking at to the door tryin kiss her goodnight
But something inside just don’t feel right

My friends tell me tell me “give it up” so I’ve been tryin to move on
But my heart still caught and my head’s not clear of the pictures from before you were gone
And I never wanna hurt no one tryin forget your name
But something inside just don’t feel the same

    [Chorus]

Nooo… She’s not you and I don’t know what to say but I’ll say it anyway
Nooo… matter what I do, I can’t believe the lie and I just can’t see it through
    No she’s not you….

    [Verse 2]

I woke up in the middle of the night started reaching for the phone
Had to take a breathe and remind myself that you said you needed time alone
Didn’t know what I wanted then and I know I let you down
But baby I know what I gotta do now
    Ohhhh….

    Repeat [Chorus]

She’s not you and I don’t know what to say but I’ll say it anyway
No matter what I do, I can’t believe the lie and I just can’t see it through

    [Bridge]

She’s not you when she smiles
    Not you when she wakes
Or you when she cries but you when she breaks
And I don’t want to hurt her but I know that it’s true
    She’s not you….

    Ohhhhh ohhh… not you

    Repeat [Chorus] 2x

    Nooo… She’s – she’s not you, I don’t know what to say but I’ll say it anyway
Nooo… matter what I do, I can’t believe the lie and I just can’t see it through
    She’s not you… yeah

She’s not you and I don’t know what to say but I’ll say it anyway
Nooo… matter what I do I can’t believe the lie and I just can’t see it through
    No she’s not you….

    Oh…wohh oh…

Christian (@XtianHawk) – wrote them down

  33. seriously want these for my ipod, but i’m kinda technologically retarded. could someone help me figure it out?

  34. Speaking of lyrics, any Cook fans transcribe the lyrics to this song yet? I can’t quite figure all of it out. Yeah, so I’m not the biggest fan of this song, but I still wanna dissect it =P.

I’ve tried. I think I have it all except for a couple of words in the bridge that I can’t quite get. It’s the lines: “I’m screaming for the melody, for all of ????

ETA: And since the song hasn’t been released through regular channels, everyone on DCO has been cautioned about posting links there. So I think a lyrics discussion is also discouraged there.

ETA: And lyrics posted below doesn’t seem to fit the audio.

Yeah, can’t wait for the Morongo concert today and the possibility of hearing new song/s from David Cook. :D

    Love “This Year”. :)

  36. smallie, these were the lyrics that Cherry Lane had for This Year when the snippets leaked. Not sure how accurate they are…

Miles apart in the same room
    Staring at nothing at all
This empty space is a vacuum filled with yesterdays
Counting cracks in the ceiling down to the paint on the wall
Falling on around our feeling that we like to win for three days
We were lost a long long time ago to reasons we may never know
But now I’m here open eyes open heart open ears for the seasons that you’ll never show
so I’ll let you know this year this year
you’re dancing circles around me second time second place
you knock the wind outta my lungs
you have it fair to claim you own the open air
We were lost a long long time ago to reasons we may never know
But now I’m here open eyes open heart open ears for the seasons that you’ll never show
So I’ll let you know this year this year
for everything seem to me we’re everything but harmony today
I’m screaming for the melody for all our ties and bonds
We were lost a long long time ago to reasons we may never know
We were lost a long long time ago to reasons we may never know
but now I’m here open eyes open heart open ears for the seasons that you’ll never show

  37. cook’s song sound more pop that archuletas.. weird!
anyway I could hear archuletas song on the radio. still a little too amateurish IMO

  38. Both were okay. Nice hearing their voices on something different, but I want the real stuff! LOL

  39. I don’t like either of them. Hope they’re both old songs and they’ve got new better songs in the works for their next albums. David Archuleta’s is good enough maybe for some other artist, and it’s well sung, but I hate the lyrics for David. Does not match him.

  40. Since this is about songs im just gonna post this here. lol

Archie is in the studio(same one they recorded the idol songs in) with August Rigo who apparently wrote ‘Solo’ for Iyaz, has also worked with Sean Kingston and The Cab recently. He’s also worked with Espionage who coincidently cowrote ‘Come Back To Me’ and ‘Lie’

  41. Psst- someone attending the Morongo show confirmed they soundchecked a new song! ( per DCO tour stop thread )

  42. Is it just me or does “This Year” sound like a soundtrack song.

I’ve thought for a while that a lot of DC songs sound like they’d be good soundtrack songs… but that’s not necessarily a great thing cuz in my mind at least, it’s partly because they’re pleasant songs that aren’t the right kind of catchy for radio. Anyway, that’s probably why I’ve got high hopes for the Claude Kelly collabs and the like… we’ll see. Pretty excited to hear the new song they’ve apparently soundchecked for tonight’s show.

  43. yeah i cant wait to hear the new song either, though it will probably have to wait till youtubes in the morning for me.

  44. Ever since I saw a this video from the tv show Supernatural with I Did It For You as the music I’ve thought that would make a good soundtrack song.

This Year is ok but it wasn’t very catchy. I’m also excited to hear the new song.

  45. Someone just relayed that they hope to have videos up immediately after the show – that The Morongo has a “FAST Internet connection” – this is a person who takes excellent videos, – so it’s still three hours till it starts. Dinner time. With the Olympics in the background here. ;)

  46. Ever since I saw a this video from the tv show Supernatural with I Did It For You as the music I’ve thought that would make a good soundtrack song.

Misha is so hot. Anyway, there’s just something about Cook songs + Winchester boys, cuz this Permanent Supernatural vid is outstanding. (And yeah, might actually make me teary.)

Okay, here’s the deal. I dunno bout y’all, but I never met a lyric I didn’t analyze to death, even half assed demo lyrics, thus the obvious Cherry Lane errors were bugging. I tried to make corrections based on what I hear…it’s a sickness, I know…

    Comments and corrections greatly appreciated.

    * Or maybe it’s (?) You’re anything but symphony (?) It’s def not what Cherry Lane has written. ArrRRRrrrGGG.

(The lyrics are kinda growing on me, but the instrumentation obvs needs may-juh Anthemic-izing.)

  47. Ever since I saw a this video from the tv show Supernatural with I Did It For You as the music I’ve thought that would make a good soundtrack song.

I never saw that before; it does work. I always thought Searchlights
would make a good sountrack song. I get tired of all the films using mowtown and 60’s/ 70’s classics.

  48. “This Year” is a DCTR reject. So hopefully they won’t use it on this album. Progression y’know.

  49. I liked both songs, but of course I liked the Cook song more.

Also… damn. Batgirl, after you posted the link to a video of ‘I Did It For You’ from the tv show Supernatural, I thought maybe I had missed an episode somewhere that featured David Cook’s music (which would really be an accomplishment as that show features some of the greatest rock songs of all time).

Alas, it was a fan vid. And I’m sorry, it didn’t work for me, just made me uncomfortable. Dean and Castiel are NOT gay, it is a bond between brothers, but the way that vid is put together, and especially with ‘I Did it For You’ as the theme song… just seemed to completely distort the relationship, almost as if it were being played for laughs.

On the other hand, the Supernatural fan vid that Sunchick posted for ‘Permanent’ was almost exactly right, and very very good.

    Thanks though for both links.

  50. noctem seizure dont worry itll not be on the nxted album its a song rejected for his first album.

  51. sunchick, your lyrics look right to me– unfortunately, I have the same problems figuring out the same sections as you, so I can’t help =P

    Just one correction:

“that we locked away for the next spring day” should be “for the next rainy day”, I think. That’s what I hear.

  52. ^ Ah, yes, rainy day makes more sense. I originally thought he was going for a seasonal thing in that line with fall and spring.

  53. Also… damn. Batgirl, after you posted the link to a video of ‘I Did It For You’ from the tv show Supernatural, I thought maybe I had missed an episode somewhere that featured David Cook’s music (which would really be an accomplishment as that show features some of the greatest rock songs of all time).

Sorry to get your hopes up DanielB. I should have clarified when I posted it was a fanvid. But anyway I agree about the song distorting the relationship but it just made me think that IDIFY would be a good soundtrack song in general.

I’d seen the Permanent vid before too and its very good and definitely more fitting.

The lyrics are kinda growing on me, but the instrumentation obvs needs may-juh Anthemic-izing.)

After seeing the lyrics sunchick posted, its making me warm up to This Year more but I definitely agree the instrumentation needs work.
