  1. All three videos in a nut shell say why I am such a hug fan of David.
Talented to the extreme and such a wonderful human being and can’t wait for my concert in Baltimore on December 15.
Oh my goodness… Lupe looked so beautiful last night and it seems obvious at least to me he is her son…
    wow!

  2. Wow is right, KimK. I loved his rendition of Fields of Gold — and the rest of the concert looked to be amazing. Can’t wait for December 8.

  3. This young man never fails to impress me! He is getting better and better!

I cant wait for my concert! I finally get to see him since the idol tour and its gonna be great!

  6. KathyH Perhaps something like Fields of Gold will be on his next pop CD? Hope so and oh O Holy Night….
well did me in… especially the end.

  7. The Ave Maria was incredible. It’s the version that Barbra Streisand (and others) sang. Incredibly beautiful.

You know, fields of gold was good, but I wasn’t blown away by it. But the Ave Maria. Wow. (And his Mom is a super singer.)

  8. Well fields of gold isnt exactly something you’d put on a pop cd.. lol

  9. “Well fields of gold isnt exactly something you’d put on a pop cd.. lol”

Totally agree….if his next pop CD has anything like that on it, he’s in big trouble.

  10. You know, fields of gold was good, but I wasn’t blown away by it. But the Ave Maria. Wow. (And his Mom is a super singer.)

Yeah Im not generally a fan of Ave Maria but he did an amazing job with it!

  11. David’s voice is so beautiful. Season 7 wil always and forever be my favorite season. They were such a classy bunch and only needed the power of their amazing voices to sell records. I think David will be in the business for as long as he chooses. That was so touching that he had his mom on stage. I bought the Christmas cd and I LOVE IT!

  12. I loved David’s’ version of The Riddle, never heard the song before yesterday when David performed it and fell in love with it immediately. Such a nice surprise, David always out does himself and always has something new for his fans, we will be treated to 16 songs this tour. How LUCKY we are to have him in our lives? The duet with Lupe was so endearing, such class the two of them. Ave Maria and O Holy Night were magnificente, BRAVO David. Shine on with your CLASSY self, winning hearts with that VOICE, one at a time who will support you forever.

  13. frogcooke that is true…
perhaps a mix of styles for his next CD?
I just remember his Jim Cantiello interview at MTV…
well might be more of a hope then anything else.

  14. What a concert with such a talented young man! David showed his versatility – pop, Christmas, French, Spanish, Latin, singing with a choir, his mom, playing the piano. Who can ignore the fact that this artist is truly talented! I am in awe and he has certainly earned my respect – as an artist as well as a human being! We need more like him!

  15. Awesome David and his mom. :)

I wish that David’s mom had done a duet on the album with him. This performance was really special. When she said dance with me David, I think she surprised him. lol

  16. I wish that David’s mom had done a duet on the album with him. This performance was really special. When she said dance with me David, I think she surprised him. lol

yeah i think he got a little flustered haha.

  17. Yeah, they were really sweet together and I could so relate to Lupe at the end. Must be all kinds of strange and wonderful to sing on stage with the son she allowed to go on Idol at age 16.

Wanted to add: I do like Charice’s vocals on the album-version, though, too.

  18. The vids from last night are fantastic. LOVE that David performed Eva Cassidy’s version of Fields of Gold. I thought he did a beautiful job.

The people in attendance are VERY lucky.

I sure hope he takes care of that golden voice. He’s got a grueling schedule ahead.

  19. So sad he is not coming south on this tour.

Love the video of David with his mom. Their hand movements are almost identical. Now we know where he gets it.

  20. I hear ya, Buddy. I was thrilled to watch the vids this morning but it was also painful knowing I can’t go to any of the shows. :(

  21. Wow! After watching these vid’s I am so stocked for the Ann Arbor Concert, mercy… full symphony orchestra to boot!!! We are in for a wild ride this holiday season with the man himself “-) What a gift he has â™ ¥

  22. I am thoroughly and completely jealous of people going to ann arbor.. *whines*

  23. I want a DVD!!!!! I want a taped concert! I’ll even buy it!! UGH!!!

  24. That’s what I would call ‘pure talent’. No gimmicks, no rated-R performance, but shock values by giving knock-out vocals. This young man will gain more and more respect because of his pure talent and heart in the right place. I loved when he sang ‘The Riddle’ and I can see the future Elton John, but as a more dynamic performer than Elton John.

  25. Lovely.

But if I’m nitpicking, I’d say he needs to let loose of that mic stand just a bit and open his eyes.

  26. I’ve been raking my brains out for months trying to think who Archie reminds me of and it finally came to me: Mel Torme. The Golden fog. The guy who wrote the Christmas Song and who could skat with the best of them.

And this is a real compliment….because his voice lasted for 30 or 40 years!!

  27. I want a DVD!!!!! I want a taped concert! I’ll even buy it!! UGH!!!

UGG I know.. the one concert with a full orchestra.. shoulda been taped… BAH!

    lol carolina

Tess- I think he was call The Velvet Fog

  28. Tess- I think he was call The Velvet Fog

oops on me….and I just went and listened to some of his stuff and even with crappy recordings and less than hifi production you could still hear that he had pipes…just like Archie.

  29. I went last night. As a highly trained musician, I have been to many, many great church and other various Christmas concerts. I have to say that bar none, this is the best Christmas concert I have ever been to.

He has grown in so many ways- his vocal range and strength, his confidence both musically and in speaking in front of people, his maturity physically and emotionally.

He emanates the Christmas spirit like no one I have ever seen. His singing was flawless, and I cried through most of the concert.

Despite the many screaming fans during his regular songs, you could hear a pin drop during his Christmas music. It was unbelievable.
The song with his mom was amazing and touching.

WOW! If you have never heard him live, you must find tickets for this tour. I wish I could go again tonight but it is totally sold out.

I am not a drama queen by any means, but all I can say is WOW!

  30. But if I’m nitpicking, I’d say he needs to let loose of that mic stand just a bit and open his eyes.

He rarely uses a mic stand anymore and I think he did for OHN because to him it is such a sacred song, ditto the closed eyes. If you notice it looks like he actually takes a moment to compose himself after he finished singing that song perhaps even praying.

I believe he is one of the only male pop singers out there right now who can perform Ave Maria perfectly one minute, and a top pop hit the next. He has something special and I hope to see him around for a long, long time.

  31. Yes, it was at Abravanel Hall. There actually might be some tickets left from other sellers online, just not from the regular ticket seller for tonight.

  32. Just answered my own question….Abravanel Hall probably has some of the VERY BEST acoustics in the western United States. No money was spared on making sure that the sound in that venue is pure and crisp from every spot. Thousands and thousands of dollars were spent having the best acoustic engineers design the envelope of the concert hall as well as the sound system.

Archie should feel very pleased that he had the opportunity to have a concert there. Just going there and listening to the Utah symphony is an experience for the ears.

  33. I’ve been raking my brains out for months trying to think who Archie reminds me of and it finally came to me: Mel Torme. The Golden fog. The guy who wrote the Christmas Song and who could skat with the best of them. And this is a real compliment’ ¦.because his voice lasted for 30 or 40 years!!

Tess, as usual, you cut right through to the heart of the matter. Yes, a talented young Mel Torme. Archie is guaranteed to have a big singing career, and a long one at that.

And his duet with his mom was cute. Did she ad-lib and add to the lyrics in one spot, or am I just imagining it?
Anyway I liked all the Archie videos — what’s not to like?

  34. Well fields of gold isnt exactly something you’d put on a pop cd.. lol

Right, not this version. However, Fields of Gold was a hit for Sting back in the 1990s. Sting’s version is different from David’s:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UppX6vP3c4g

    ’tis a beautiful song.

David’s performance with his mom is very special and touching, tear jerker at the end.

  35. Something funny. I LOVE pat-a-pan and think it is one of the most catchy, radio friendly songs on the album. When he sang those low notes at the end of Pat-a- pan, the friend I was with and I both looked at each other at the same time with an “oh my heck” look on our faces. Those low notes were astounding. The low notes are at 3:44, but you must watch the whole thing.

  36. Even though I really like Sting’s version, I will always, always prefer Eva’s version. I’ve been a fan of hers for many years.

David based his version on hers. She is a musical hero for him even though she died when he was just 3 years old, and the first time he ever heard the song it was in 2002 at the Olympics and it was her version he heard.

    Eva’s version

  37. Awwww, you can see he absolultely adores his mother. I loved watching that. Warm fuzzies, lol.

  38. His mother is so beautiful. Archie must have gotten his looks from her.

  39. I just got my VIP itinerary. I can’t wait! Probably no live orchestra like the other shows, but that’s ok. Just to hear it all live will be a treat.

  40. I LOVE pat-a-pan and think it is one of the most catchy, radio friendly songs on the album.

It is the best song for a single off the album. It’s crazy that jive didn’t send it to radio stations. Wouldn’t it be great to hear that every year? (I don’t think we’ll be hearing Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas with David and Charice in years to come.) I don’t get Jive and their judgment.

  41. The duet with his mom was very touching. She has a beautiful voice. That was such a wonderful surprise. The long embrace at the end was so sweet. And you were right, JRB. He definitely inherited his diva hand from her. LOL! Their hands were diva’ing in unison. I wonder if she’ll be touring with him for the entire Christmas tour or will there be surprise duets here and there?

I loved his singing while playing the piano on “The Riddle.” It demonstrated once again what a true musician he is. That’s such a beautiful song. I love the lyrics. Thanks, David, for introducing me to it.

It was really cool too that there was a wardrobe change in the middle of the concert before beginning their Christmas set. Not only did David change clothes, but his entire band did too. I thought that was a nice touch. Very classy.

  42. All 3 of the vids were great but the duet with his mother was my absolute favorite of the 3. Yep, I’m a sap too JudyOhio. :)

  43. He definitely inherited his diva hand from her. LOL! Their hands were diva’ing in unison.

Didn’t notice the diva hand(s) first time, so had to go back and watch again. You are so right! Thanks for pointing it out, lol.

If you look at iTunes’s popularity bars for Christmas from the Heart, you’ll find that “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” is the most downloaded song from the album. It is over twice as popular as the next most downloaded single which is “Joy to the World.” I think we can assume that most of his devoted fans will be purchasing his entire album. People who are just casual fans or just passersby will be the ones cherry-picking what appeals to them the most. “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” is the most popular by a very wide margin. So I think it makes sense that it was included in the sampler sent to the radio stations. It is those casual fans or passersby that we want to attract to David’s music. We can’t rely on our personal tastes. Popularity bars such as those on iTunes are a more reliable gauge of what the general population likes. I absolutely love “Pat-a-Pan” too, but out of a maximum possible of 12 popularity bars, “Pat-a-Pan” received only 2 bars. 10 of the other songs on the album have more bars then that song.

ETA: Case in point… Fans voted for ALTNOY to be the 2nd single and Jive obliged. It did not do so well as we all know.

  45. Thanks for all the videos of last night concert. Wow, David A looked so handsome. I love the suit and duet with his Mom was pricelss.
good luck to a very sucessfull Christmas Tour David A. Can’t wait for Dec 2 in Anaheim, Ca.

  46. Ok, this young man is about the most phenomonal singer I have witnessed in a long time. He held on to every note with every single glorious song. This song MJ posted, Fields of Gold, is just one of many which were sheer perfection and gloriousness.
Hope to see MJ post Ave Maria and Pat a Pan too! That would be neat if even a comment or two. Oh well, thanks for giving some attention to the masterful artist, David Archuleta, who glows in every way!
He is one of a kind! He is beyond!!!!

  47. ozarka, you are missing one point. The reason why “Have yourself a merry little Christmas” is the most popular is because it received the most advertising attention. If Pat a Pan had been given this same attention there is not doubt it would have been much more popular.
But, to be honest, Pat a Pan is not a traditional American Christmas song, and so it is not recognizable. After people purchase the album and listen to it, those that are in to more contemporary, up to date music would appreciate it’s uniqueness. This may not attract to older as it will to younger. My spouse, listened to the whole album and commented that Pat a Pan is the most unique song on this album and it should be on radio. Radio tends to play classics though. This song is just different and may have some even grander designs for it. I could see it used in musicals or in some dance or movie, really? That is how grand it is. It’s beyond radio.

  48. Ozarka, another note in regards to itunes. People purchasing single songs rather than whole album are going to hear the little snippets, or even rely on past judgements of what is more popular Christmas songs. Automatically Silent Night, O Holy Night, HYAMLC, First Noel, Joy to the World, are going to sale more for the fact that they are more popular songs. So, I disagree that Pat a Pan is not liked by general public. Everyone who hears it at concerts have loved it. It’s just now getting some exposure. Give it some time.
Melodies of Christmas would be a better way to compare to Pat a Pan. Melodies has been sent to radio and advertised and it has sold more on itunes. That is proof that the advertising makes the difference. For Melodies is an Archuleta song and not a classic. So the higher sales numbers with that song versus Pat a Pan means that this is strictly advertising. Melodies, Joy to World, and HYAMLC all have largest sale numbers.
Another note: Pat a Pan is very short. Could this be another reason?

  49. And…my favorites of the first night…Ave Maria, Pat a Pan, The First Noel, and O Holy Night~

  50. Oh, and I almost forgot, Riu Riu Chiu! That song is another example of not getting recognition. That song sung by David is amazing! He has some kind of rhythm connection with these spanish songs. Just watching his body move to that song while he sings, it’s a whole different vibe and his body moves to the beat completely different than any other songs. He was moving like this in his ALMA song too.
He’s got something going with these spanish songs.
I would love to see an album in spanish pushed with him. Spanish cd’s sales are huge!!! Spanish music sales more than american. And in most areas of the country spanish radio stations are in the top three. They almost always have higher viewing audience than any pop radio stations.

  51. Wow…what a great start to his Christmas tour. I love the selection of songs…can’t wait to see him in Ann Arbor. This will be only the 2nd time seeing David perform since “Ford Day”!

I really loved his rendition of “The Riddle”….this is definitely the type of music I see David performing in the future.

    Ditto to everything “Laurie” said!!

  52. Ok, just rewatched Pat a Pan. That song is amazing. David has to sing it so so fast, and it’s a tongue twister of a song. But the other thing I like, is it has very few runs. It’s just straight cut, precise, and I like David doing something unique like this. I know many love David’s ooh’s ahh’s and hmmm’s, but he does that a lot. And I prefer less of those and more of the cut and dry as in Pat a Pan. And I love the lower range in this song. He does it so well. More of it!!

  53. Davidx2, I agree with you on more songs like The Riddle for future. I think this is David’s idea too.

  54. DavidArchie Tonight I had a bit of a challenge… Haha. But still so glad I got to perform again in Utah! Thanks so much everyone for coming! about 1 hour ago from txt

I wonder what he means by “challenge”?

  55. Will, there was some sort of technical problem with the music near the beginning of Pat-a-Pan. There was a brief moment of time when the music just stopped. I think it had something to do with the guitarist who disappeared for a while and then came back. It threw him off for a bit but he soon recovered when the guitarist returned to the stage and started strumming.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VP8ev7Quhc

  56. Yeah. After the first verse in French, the guitar is supposed to come in…but it didn’t. Steve had some sort of problem with his guitar. The drummer kind of saved the day tonight. It got the audience clapping to give David accompaniment until Steve got back out there. haha!

Here it is last night for comparison

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nbifoi4DAZ4

  57. This was a nice surprise of the night:

The Riddle (great quality video too)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=caLD98SJx8I&feature=player_embedded

The lyrics of this song are amazing. David A touches souls in many ways and one of them is his choice of songs. It’s long but I want you to read what he is singing about. I see him writing songs like this someday.

“There was a man back in ’95
Whose heart ran out of summers
But before he died, I asked him
?Wait, what’s the sense in life?
Come over me, Come over me?

He said, “Son why you got to sing that tune?
Catch a Dylan song or some eclipse of the moon?
Let an angel swing and make you swoon
Then you will see, you will see”

Then he said, “Here’s a riddle for you
Find the answer: There’s a reason for the world
    You and I”

Picked up my kid from school today
Did you learn anything? ?Cause in the world today
You can’t live in a castle far away
Now talk to me, come talk to me

He said, “Dad I’m big, but we’re smaller than small
In the scheme of things, well we’re nothing at all
Still every mother’s child sings a lonely song
So play with me, come play with me”

?And hey Dad, here’s a riddle for you
Find the answer: There’s a reason for the world
    You and I?

I said, “Son for all I’ve told you
When you get right down to the
Reason for the world who am I?”

There are secrets that we still have left to find
There have been mysteries from the beginning of time
There are answers we’re not wise enough to see
He said, ?You looking for a clue? I love you free?

The batter swings and the summer flies
As I look into my angel’s eyes
A song plays on while the moon is hiding over me
    Something comes over me

    I guess we’re big and I guess we’re small
If you think about it man you know we got it all
‘Cause we’re all we got on this bouncing ball
And I love you free, I love you freely

    Here’s a riddle for you
Find the answer: There’s a reason for the world
    You and I “

  58. Wow. And it looks like that may stay in the set for the tour? Hope so. It’s not good to wish away entire weeks of my life, but … c’mon Dec. 8!

  59. kbestor (Kurt Bestor): Making a surprise appearance on Archuleta’s Xmas concert. Only time I’ll probably get young girls to scream for me. http://bit.ly/6D8QxQ
