David Archuleta – Ave Maria – Univision

David Archuleta performed a pretty rendition of “Ave Maria” at a school in East Harlem, NYC last month, for the Spanish language cable channel, Univision.

David’s performance ran tonight, part of the channel’s Christmas special, Nuestra Navidad.

I watched the entire program, and sadly, the 4 years of Spanish I took in school were pretty much a waste. I couldn’t understand a thing! Gloria Estefan interviewed President Obama in Spanish…

Watch the video, after the jump…

  1. Beautiful rendition of Ave Maria with the childrem singing in the background. I watched the whole program too and don’t understand Spanish but know they were promoting helping others. Thanks for posting MJ.

  2. Thanks Mj! My wife watches that damn “Univision” 24/7 but I don’t.. so I missed it! She’s not an Idol fan, but LOVES Adam so she wouldn’t have known who David is…

Very cool, I really think he should go the Spanish route, too.
Edit: My daughter love that Pee wee kid (the intro for David)

  3. They showed just the second part of the song, but it was perfect!

Ave Maria is actually my favorite Christmas Song’ ¦ it is also a written prayer for the Catholic people. You Catholic people are used to pray the same words, but instead of Latin, in English:

English: Hail Mary/Full of grace/Our Lord is with you/Blessed are you/among women/and blessed is the fruit/of your womb/Jesus./Holy Mary/Mother of God/pray for us/sinners/now/and at the hour of our death/Amen.

    Latin: Ave Maria/Gratia plena/Dominus tecum/Benedicta tu/in mulieribus/et benedictus fructus/ventris tui/Iesus./Sancta Maria/Mater Dei/ora pro nobis/peccatoribus/nunc/et in hora mortis nostrae./Amen.

David version of this song is def. the better I ´ve ever seen. He did justice to this moving prayer, he is tender, totally reverent, the voice is amazing (of course) and the pronunciation/accent are perfect, much better than other american/english/irish male or female singers! Differently from others, he doesn ´t sing the vowels as in English, but as in Latin language, as it is meant to be, and he also takes care of the ‘r’ consonant sound (among other things). In Latin the sound/pronunciation is completely different from English, his native language, but he is a perfectionist and manages to sing perfectly! Kudos, Archie!

  4. I love David’s Ave Maria. That and Silent Night and O Holy Night and Pat-A-Pan and … well, my list is getting long, but I’m pretty happy tonight.

  5. he’s like the purist IDOL ever. Love his character and personality. And his voice is of course beautiful. Nicely done David!

  6. he’s just such a beautiful singer. It was only the last half of the song, but it’s a long song and I think the show did a good job with the cutting so it wasn’t too awkward.

BTW–Did Pee Wee call him “the American Idol?”

  7. Not a word about David’s performance, MJ?

    Isn’t “pretty” a word?

  8. he doesn’t really say anything exciting but i will translate:

“here we are celebrating christmas in this school in east harlem New York. because here we *witness* miracles daily. and here with us is david archuleta.”

and then david sings really beautiful.

gigi: wow! did not know ave maria is the hail mary. did you know you say the hail mary like five million times when doing the rosary. you say the hail mary on the little beads. i know because my mom does the rosary all the time and really really fast in both english and spanish.

*i’m not really positive on that one word. i’ll have a girl i work with double check it but basically he is saying either witness or know miracles.

  9. He does this song so beautifully on his CD. My mom made me replay it for her when we were headed to the mall the other day. Me & mom are Cookie fans who love Archie too :) .

  10. Maravillosa interpretacion :P….

I watched the entire program, and sadly, the 4 years of Spanish I took in school were pretty much a waste. I couldn’t understand a thing! Gloria Estefan interviewed President Obama in Spanish’ ¦

Dont feel back I took 5 years of english and my grammar is so bad…

  11. AZIdolFan, exactly, the Catholic people say this prayer all the time, but I think a very few people relate the prayer Hail Mary to the song Ave Maria. I don ´t know if even David knew, because the mormons don ´t say written prayers daily, they probably (I think, not sure) do even more prayers than the Catholics, just not written prayers.

I HAD to study Latin language 2 years for College’ ¦ and I LOVE the song, so I heard so many renditions: American, English, Irish, Spanish, Italian and Brazilian singers! David ´s rendition is magnificent!

carolinacharms, did you watch the live streaming tonight?
Those who didn’t get a chance to watch @DavidArchie on http://www.BillboardLive.com
or want to see the show again, it is available now on video on demand.

  12. “because here we *witness* miracles daily.”

“*i’m not really positive on that one word. i’ll have a girl i work with double check it but basically he is saying either witness or know miracles.”

AZIdolFan, I checked for you and I think he said “because here the miracles *happen* daily (porque aqui *suceden* a diario los milagros).”

  13. The male backup behind David to the left could be his brother, couldn’t he? Similar expressions, similar looks.

I don’t know how familiar David was with this song before the Christmas album project, but I do think he sings it as a prayer. Very evident live — and I’m amazed at how consistently WELL he sings this song and the other challenging ones.

  14. Beautiful! David sure treats this song with great reverence. I enjoy all types of Christmas music…but lately, its all David. Love him.

  15. KathyH – David has sung Ave Maria for years. You can prolly find him singing it on youtube when he was younger. David is a student of music (perfectionist), so he would’ve trained the foreign language songs so he pronounced everything correctly and they were authentic sounding. Benton (opener) speaks French and David’s pronounciations in Pat-a-Pan have definitely improved during the tour. MasterClassLady said bravo to David for singing “Gratia vs Grazia” like alot of opera types do; famous opera types too.

Trezoc – All over the net, people are dissing the CD because its not “pop-ish” and it doesn’t have the newer fad songs; its too traditional. David just has too much love and respect for the holidays and for the meaning behind each song to do that. He would’ve never put out a “popish – made for money” type Christmas CD. I’m happy he didn’t either. I finally have a reverent CD without it being a church choir CD.

Before the first concert, I made a list of the songs I’d like to hear on tour and he does most of them. Only Joy To The World is missing. I actually never thought he would do both Ave Maria and O Holy Night because of the difficulty of the songs. I worried about his voice holding up. He does a great job of protecting it when he goes for the “Noels” at the end of OHN and that one pesky high note in AM. BRAVO David BRAVO.

  16. He said:
“porque aqui suceden a diario los milagros”, which I would translate as “because the miracles happen here daily”. It sounds odd, probably because we are just getting that edited portion of the show. If the show was about miracles happening all over the place, and then they go to this school as an example, then it makes more sense.
He was introduced as “the american idol”, which is not true today (Kris is the american idol), and wasnt’ true last year either. But hey, he is an american idol.

ETA: and, WOW. Nobody sings better. Nobody. You may like other sounds, voices, or looks, but as singing goes, very few come close to Archie.

  17. ETA: and, WOW. Nobody sings better. Nobody. You may like other sounds, voices, or looks, but as singing goes, very few come close to Archie.

i agree. as my grandma used to say, ”nuff said”.

  18. Beautifully sung, he sings it with such conviction, he has such a great connection to his songs and his audience. Well done David :D

  19. ‘KathyH ‘“ David has sung Ave Maria for years. You can prolly find him singing it on youtube when he was younger.’

pouncer84, I don ´t think so. David has sung ‘O ´ Holly Night’ for years, there are indeed two YouTube Videos prior to American Idol and he said so many times he always loved and sang this song.

The same is not true about ‘Ave Maria’ . He didn ´t even know its lyrics previously and he reportedly took 5 hours to record the song, given the difficulty of both lyrics and melody. Just to record it! I think he spent so many more hours to study and learn it!

He is such a hard worker, serious and dedicated guy, plus sensitive, extremely talented and vocally gifted! As Paula Abdul told him, he is ‘a gem for the whole world to see’ and as was told by Idol musical director Michael Orland, ‘He came as a genius and left as a genius’ .
He continues to prove it daily and it is such a pleasure and joy to be his fan!

  20. He was introduced as ‘the american idol’ , which is not true today (Kris is the american idol), and wasnt’ true last year either. But hey, he is an american idol.

LoveDaRocker, very well said and so true.

English: Hail Mary/Full of grace/Our Lord is with you/Blessed are you/among women/and blessed is the fruit/of your womb/Jesus./Holy Mary/Mother of God/pray for us/sinners/now/and at the hour of our death/Amen.

Gigi.br, thanks so much for the background info on “Ave Maria.” I had no idea that that was the Rosary prayer “Hail Mary” all along. I’ve loved that song for the longest time without ever knowing the translation. But really you don’t need the translation to grasp the passion and reverence that it invokes, especially when it is being sung with such ardent feeling the way David sings it. You learn something every day. Enriched with this new-found information, I will enjoy listening to David sing it even more now. Thanks again!

  21. Had to quickly watch this after the Billboard concert last nite! LUVD the squeals from the audience! My FAVE song–he is BRILLIANT!

  22. He’s a sweet boy. I love his voice. There’s just something special about his performances. Very sincere.
